Everton: "Phenomenal" star won’t be joining Everton

Everton are now unlikely to sign Southampton centre-back Mohammed Salisu in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

How old is Mohammed Salisu?

The 24-year-old was part of a Saints team who underperformed badly last season, and it led to them being relegated from the Premier League to the Championship.

In fairness to Salisu, he did his best to prevent that from happening, arguably standing out as Southampton's best defender at times, having started 21 league games and averaged 2.5 aerial duel wins per game. He also topped the pile with his tally of 2.3 tackles per match, further outlining his influence, and played three times for Ghana at the 2022 World Cup, scoring once.

With Saints now planning for life in the Championship, it is only natural that a number of their key players will move on this summer, and Salisu falls into the bracket, no doubt wanting to remain in the Premier League, or a top division elsewhere across Europe.

Everton have been linked with a move for the defender in recent months, as they eye up reinforcements at Goodison Park in order to avoid another relegation battle, but a new update has now emerged regarding their pursuit of him.

Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu.

Are Everton going to sign Mohammed Salisu?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones admitted that Everton now look highly unlikely to sign Salisu before the new season starts, pouring cold water on the rumour in the process:

"Everton have been linked with Salisu since the end of last season but I don’t think this is one for fans to get too excited about, everyone I ask pours a bit of cold water on their chances of actually getting him.

"I think he would actually have been a very good fit for them at this stage of their build and it’s encouraging at least that they are making checks on players of this age and profile.

"But at the moment, all information suggests that while he will indeed be on his way out of Southampton, it is Monaco that have made the most progress and intend to get a deal done."

This is a blow for Everton, because while Salisu was clearly not blameless when it comes to Southampton's relegation, he is also a centre-back who has real potential, especially in a better team.

Still only 24 years of age, the Ghanaian can further grow as a player in the years that pass and Sean Dyche could be an ideal mentor for him as manager, having always made his teams defensively-strong and well-organised.

Salisu has been hailed as "phenomenal" by former Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy in the past, in particular his "aerial ability, his reading of the game, his blocks, patience, his passing", which shows what an all-round force he is as a central defender.

With Conor Coady's loan move not becoming permanent this summer, the Saints man could have been a great replacement for him, and a younger alternative, but it looks as though Everton are going to have to look elsewhere for new signings at the back now.

Farke Could Form “Electric” Leeds Duo By Signing £29k-p/w Gem

If afforded the right resources, Daniel Farke is more than capable of directing an instant Premier League return for Leeds United.

The 46-year-old managed Norwich City in two promotions from the Championship and will begin his hunt for some new players to join his Elland Road revolution.

Last summer, Victor Orta’s experimental transfer strategy played a significant part in the club’s relegation. The signing of too many unproven and unknown players ultimately cast an unbreakable shadow over the Yorkshire outfit.

Three different managers were unable to pinpoint how to maximise the talents of the squad, but with a promotion specialist at the helm, things could look very different.

In this new era, Amad Diallo should certainly be one of the primary targets.

What’s the latest on Amad Diallo to Leeds United?

According to Football Insider, Erik ten Hag will make a decision on Diallo’s future in the “next few weeks.” However, the expectation is that the youngster is likely to leave again on loan in search of first-team football.

This comes amid reports that Leeds are eyeing a possible temporary move for the one-time Atalanta starlet, following the 20-year-old's phenomenal season-long loan spell at Sunderland last season.

How good is Amad Diallo?

The £29k-per-week star joined Sunderland in August 2022 and was an absolute revelation in the Championship. In an unstoppable season, the winger scored 13 goals at a rate of 0.46 per 90 to become the club’s top scorer.

This scintillating form was somewhat of a surprise as he was largely anonymous in a frustrating short-term at Rangers at the tail end of the 2021/22 campaign, in which he only made 13 appearances due to injury and inconsistency.

However, he’s always had burning potential that had patiently waited to be unlocked. Upon his move to Old Trafford in 2021, Ole Gunnar Solskjær predicted the forward to reach unparalleled heights and said: “His speed, vision, and fantastic dribbling ability will stand him in good stead to make the transition.

"He is a player with all of the raw attributes that are needed to be an important player for Manchester United in the years to come."

With Diallo on the right wing and on Wilfried Gnonto on the other touchline, Leeds could be a frightening offensive force next term.

The Italian joined the English side last summer, and in 14 Premier League starts, he notched six goal contributions. Although it was a tricky debut season, he still displayed a commendable fearlessness and directness that made him of the club’s most dangerous assets. This is partly portrayed by his rank within the best 25% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for progressive carries per 90 and assists per 90.

Wilfried-Gnonto-Leeds-premier-league-everton-transfers

His effervescence and quality have been earmarked by Gary Neville, who said: “To see someone so mature, so young is very unusual in that position. Sometimes you see potential and talent but watching him so closely, his understanding of where to be, his choice of pass, when to run with it, his awareness of teammates, really good honestly.”

Therefore, Diallo, who had been described as “electric” by The Athletic’s Peter Rutzler, is already a proven Championship asset, and with Gnonto, the pair could dominate defenders come August.

Derbyshire in profit for sixth year running

Derbyshire have announced a sixth successive year of profit, with a surplus of £2653 in 2016. The financial results included a record turnover for the third year in a row, on the back of increased commercial activity.A new media centre at Derbyshire’s ground will be unveiled as part of hosting televised matches at the Women’s World Cup and although chairman Chris Grant set to stand down ahead of running for election to the ECB, the club has continued to go in the right direction, despite a difficult couple of seasons on the field.”I’m extremely proud to have overseen six successive years of surplus and grown turnover to record levels since being elected in 2011,” Grant said. “This has been a tremendous achievement given the huge challenge that keeping a first-class county afloat entails and is an enviable track record.”The increased revenue has allowed us to continue our commitment to increasing the cricket budget, while also investing in improving the ground.”It is also no exaggeration to say that the 3aaa County Ground is unrecognisable from what it used to be as a result of a £4m ground development programme, which will see the club host the opening fixture of this year’s ICC Women’s World Cup and Sir Elton John in concert.”Derbyshire finished bottom of Division Two in 2016, while failing to progress in either the NatWest Blast or Royal London Cup. Kim Barnett was subsequently appointed as director of cricket, with New Zealand’s John Wright coming in as a specialist T20 coach, among a host of comings and goings on the playing staff.

The Bulls need to win this match to keep pace with the Bushrangers and the Redbacks at the top of the Shield table.Tasmania slipped as low as 6 for 61 as the new Dukes ball darted about a well-grassed surface, before Tim Paine and the former Bulls allrounder Simon Milenko mounted a minor rearguard action, adding 68 for the seventh wicket. Even so, the visitors were delighted to roll the hosts for 150 and be batting well before the tea break.Peter Forrest was out for a duck at the start of Queensland’s reply, but Burns was able to lead his side into more comfortable territory. Marnus Labuschagne offered useful support, and he will resume in the company of Sam Heazlett on the second morning.

Arsenal Eyeing £50m-Rated Midfield “Monster” As Well As Rice

Arsenal have identified the Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia as a summer transfer target as they look to update their options in the middle of the park.

How old is Romeo Lavia?

Despite the Gunners enjoying an impressive 2022/23 campaign, it seems as if Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar are looking to overhaul their midfield this summer.

Indeed, it is believed Granit Xhaka could be heading for the exit doors this summer with reports of interest coming from Bayer Leverkusen.

And on top of the potential exit of the Swiss midfielder, it has now recently been suggested that Thomas Partey could be another name who could be set to depart for a new opportunity over the coming months.

These are two players who played huge roles in Arsenal's starting XI last season with Xhaka making 37 appearances in the league and Partey making 33 league appearances.

Despite this, the Gunners are believed to be seriously interested in bringing Declan Rice to north London this summer to bolster than midfield with a bid already lodged for the 24-year-old.

And speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has now claimed the Gunners could look to make a move for the 19-year-old from Southampton, Lavia:

"It's true that Romeo Lavia from Southampton is one of the players they have in the list, it's correct.

"They like him, they consider Romeo Lavia a top talent. Man City have a buy-back clause on the player but only in summer 2024. Not this summer and the clause would not be valid in the future; it's only valid in 2024 for Man City, not now.

"So Arsenal are interested Chelsea are also interested."

How much is Romeo Lavia worth?

The 19-year-old played a significant role in the Southampton side last season having made 29 appearances in the Premier League alone (via Transfermarkt).

Of course, it was a hugely underwhelming campaign for the Saints which saw them finish rock bottom of the Premier League table.

However, it was not a wasted campaign for the Belgian who was even dubbed as an "absolute monster" by some in the media for one of his displays earlier in the year.

And this can be seen through his returns over the last year with the youngster ranking in the top fourth percentile for blocks made across all midfielders in the top five European leagues (via FBef).

As a result of his impressive displays, it is believed the Belgian has garnered interest from a number of clubs including Liverpool.

But it is apparent any club who is looking to acquire the young talent will have to dig deep this summer with the Saints reportedly placing a £50m price tag on their young star.

Considering Arsenal are looking to spend big money on Rice and potentially also Kai Havertz, this could prove to be another significant financial layout for the Gunners this summer.

Panchal resumed the second day on 122, and seemed in danger of running out of partners as the day wore on. K Vignesh finished with figures of 4 for 104, and his fellow seamer Aswin Crist with 3 for 73.

Ashwin reclaims No. 1 Test ranking for bowlers

R Ashwin’s career-best match haul of 13 for 140 against New Zealand in the Indore Test has propelled him back to the top of the ICC Test rankings for bowlers. Ashwin had earlier briefly held the position in July, before being overtaken by Dale Steyn and James Anderson.Ashwin picked up 6 for 81 in the first innings and followed it up with 7 for 59 to achieve a career-best rating of 900 points. He joined an elite club of bowlers to have attained 900 ratings points since 2000; Muttiah Muralitharan, Glenn McGrath, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn and Shaun Pollock being the others.Ashwin is now trailed by Steyn, with 878 points, and Anderson on 870. While Steyn’s next Test will be in Australia starting November 3, Anderson is aiming to be fit for the India tour, as he is missing the Bangladesh Tests. Ashwin has a good chance to retain the top spot until the end of the year, with India in the midst of a lengthy home season. If he does so, it will mark the second year in succession that Ashwin closes out the calendar year as the No. 1-ranked Test bowler. Ashwin also leads the allrounders’ table, while team-mate Ravindra Jadeja surged to a career-best third, joint Moeen Ali.Among batsmen, Ajinkya Rahane’s innings of 188 and 23 not out in Indore helped him rise to a career-best sixth position, making him the only Indian batsman in the top 10.

'Fisherman' Steyn willing to swap pace for fitness

Dale Steyn, returning to South Africa’s Test team after injury, will take a step back, in terms of pace, with a focus on staying fit even if it means being slightly less fast

Firdose Moonda16-Aug-2016The day fast-bowling fans have been dreading has finally arrived: Dale Steyn has grown up.South Africa’s supercharged pace spearhead will take a back seat of sorts when he returns to the Test team, with a focus on staying fit even if it means being slightly less fast.”If I must be realistic about it, running in and bowling 145kph all day when you haven’t done it for a long time is going to be really tough. Objective number one is to get through 18 overs a day, maybe dropping in pace, but being as effective as possible. 140 is going to be enough,” Steyn said at the launch of the New Zealand Test series in Durban. “There’s going to be a day when I can rev it up to 145 and maybe even 150 but we’ve got somebody like KG (Kagiso Rabada) who can do that now.”Steyn on South Africa’s rebuilding process

Much like his own fortunes, Steyn has seen South Africa’s slip down the Test rankings following successive series defeats last summer, results Steyn was powerless to stave off. Now that he is back, he wants to do his bit for the rebuilding process.
“We get the team back up the rankings by winning games and having guys that play good cricket in the team. We will miss our captain AB (de Villiers), but Faf (du Plessis) steps up and people need to step up. I am back in the side and I am determined to get the team there and when I put my head down to something, I mean it,” Steyn said.
“Hopefully we can get into the top three and then maybe one day be No.1 again. We have the potential but it’s hard. It’s going to be a process of two or three years of winning series and winning them convincingly.”

Steyn’s more measured approach comes after he experienced first hand the risks of doing too much, too quickly last summer. After a groin strain kept Steyn out of three of South Africa’s four Tests in India, he tried to rush his way back and broke his shoulder. “As I recovered from one, I broke down on the other one and its only because I was going from 0 to 100 way too quickly,” Steyn said. “If you look at your fast cars, Ferraris, they always tell you drive it to 1000 kays (kms) before you hit 200-plus. I obviously didn’t put in 1000 kays, I was just trying to hit 200 and then I bust the shoulder.”He recovered in time for the World T20 but was left out of the one-day squad that travelled to the Caribbean in June. Steyn played in the NatWest T20 Blast instead, followed by the CPL, which means he has not had to bowl more than four overs a match this year and is looking forward to the challenge of longer, more intense spells.”I love the idea that I can bowl long periods and attack for a whole lot longer by bowling consistently hard lengths with the odd bouncer here and there,” he said. “In one day cricket, you bowl two hard-length balls and then think this guy might come at me, I have to change up now and then bowl a slower ball. Now, you can really put pressure on batters. You can hit that hard length all day until they make a mistake and that’s what I love. I love testing guys’ patience and it’s a waiting game. I am a fisherman, I will wait there all day and hopefully find the edge or knock his poles over.”New Zealand’s line-up has been one of the places Steyn has most enjoyed casting his net and one of the fish he hopes to reel in is opening batsman Martin Guptill. “I like playing against them and I have had personal success against them. I got Guptill out in the CPL, nicked him off. Straight away he came to me and said, ‘I can’t wait to come to South Africa,’ and I said, ‘Neither can I.'”Steyn’s success against New Zealand stretches back to his breakthrough season as an international bowler, when he took successive ten-wicket hauls in a two-match series in the 2007-08 season headlined by the bouncer that damaged Craig Cummins’ face. Also, Doug Bracewell was his 300th Test wicket and he now has the opportunity to notch up another milestone against New Zealand. With 406 wickets to his name, Steyn is 16 away from overtaking Shaun Pollock and becoming South Africa’s leading wicket-taker. For now, though, that is not a goal on his mind. “That stuff annoys me. When I went to Bangladesh everyone said you are going to get 400 wickets and then the rain came and it was a nightmare and then people said in India, if you bowl well you can get Polly’s record and then I did a groin and then they said if bowl well against England, you will get it. I am not interested in any records. It will be a record if I can get through a game without injury.”

Ashwin ready to be 'boring' to be successful in West Indies

R Ashwin has said that he believes patience will be the key for him and India’s other bowlers on the slow tracks of the West Indies

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jul-20163:28

‘We are prepared for the long haul’ – Ashwin

Offspinner R Ashwin believes patience will be the key for him and India’s other bowlers on the slow tracks of the West Indies. He would have to be “as boring as possible”, Ashwin said, stubbornly sticking to good lines and lengths to get the better of the batsmen during the four-Test series that begins on July 21.”I’m sure it’s going to be challenging because of the kind of wickets, the kind of heat … From whatever I saw in the last [warm-up] game, the wickets were pretty slow,” Ashwin told . “I’m sure I’ll have to be as boring as possible in terms of trying to plug away all day long.”Ashwin did not play India’s first warm-up game, but said he learnt a lot from watching legspinner Amit Mishra – who picked up four wickets – bowl. “[The pitches are] getting slower. If the wickets are going to be tailor-made for us, if it starts spinning, then we come into our own. But until then, it’s all about patience.”The other day you saw Mishy bowl for about 15-16 overs without any wickets, but once he got a breakthrough, he started breaking through at regular intervals. So that’s what we have to look for – especially the first couple of days or probably even three days of the Test match, there is not going to be a lot in it for the spinners. There might be a little bit of bounce or little bit of slowness in the wicket that you can exploit, but it’s got to be pretty boring lines and lengths and keep teasing with your flight.”Ashwin said watching new head coach Anil Kumble bowl in the nets was already benefitting him. He had spoken to Kumble, he said, and knew what the coach expected of him. “He has brought in a lot of meticulousness among the group. There is some very good discipline in the nets. The batsmen get out to the nets at the perfect time for a start, and that’s not been going around for some time [laughs].”And he [Kumble] has already started bowling in the nets, which is something I pick out notes from. So far, he has provided me with a lot of confidence and a lot of responsibility. It’s been more of giving me the license to try and express myself, which is something I really relish. We’ve had a very open chat and he has already told me what he’s looking forward to from me, and I have already told him what I’m looking forward to him teaching me. “With captain Virat Kohli largely preferring a combination that features five bowlers, Ashwin’s batting could also come into play for India. He had been working on it with batting coach Sanjay Bangar, Ashwin said. “That [batting] is something I work very hard on. I have set some goals with the coaching staff, as to what I want to achieve – not just in terms of numbers, but in terms of how correct I can be, how much more solid I can become as a batter.”And that’s a process, because the first phase is to not give your wicket away and then you can accelerate – I’ve got the shots to do it. Sanjay has worked day in and day out with me, and, at last, he seems to be happy with how it’s shaping up.”India play a second warm-up game in Basseterre from July 14, over three days, before heading to Antigua for the first Test.
