Better move than Semenyo: Man City dreaming of signing £85m “warrior”

Manchester City will be praying, despite some wobbles across recent matches, that they can go the distance with Arsenal in the ongoing Premier League title race.

A faultless winning run of eight matches in all competitions has now come to a halt with two uninspiring draws against Sunderland and Chelsea, with former Blues striker Daniel Sturridge stating after the 1-1 draw that the managerless away side “thoroughly deserved” a share of the points.

To help boost their chances of pipping the Gunners to the title, City look to be edging ever closer to officially announcing AFC Bournemouth superstar Antoine Semenyo on a statement January deal.

£65m being dropped on the Cherries attacker, but that won’t deter City from spending plenty more cash across the rest of the haywire window to come.

Man City dreaming of £85m move

Sky Sports pundit Sturridge weighed in further with his views on what the entertaining Ghanaian could offer at the Etihad post the disappointing Chelsea draw, stating that the ex-Bristol City forward’s “goal-driven” nature will make Guardiola’s men even more of a tantalising watch in the forward areas.

City could also look to shore up their midfield ranks in January, too, spending big to sign another high-class Premier League star.

Indeed, TEAMtalk report that the ten-time Premier League champions are dreaming of an audacious swoop for £85m-rated Elliot Anderson, to back up their much-talked-about move for Semenyo.

The report states that City wants to bolster their midfield options, even with Rodri back to full fitness, with Anderson sticking out as their desired target.

It’s further stated that Manchester United – who are also keen on Anderson’s signature – will fall behind in the race for the ex-Newcastle United man’s services, owing to the toxicity at Old Trafford at the moment, with Anderson also noted to be favouring a move to the sky blue half of Manchester, much like Semenyo made Guardiola and Co his top priority over Arne Slot’s Liverpool.

It’s been a remarkable ascent to the very top for Anderson, who was once plying his trade out on loan in the lower depths of the EFL with Bristol Rovers, as he potentially goes down as an even better long-term signing than Semenyo’s expected arrival.

Why Anderson could be a better signing than Semenyo

The excitement levels shouldn’t be dampened, however, regarding his counterpart’s anticipated move.

Indeed, Semenyo’s blistering tally of nine goals and three assists in the Premier League this season has even seen him branded as a “world-class” star by Cherries attacking teammate Justin Kluivert.

Further described as being “impossible to replace” by Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, the addition of Semenyo will only enhance City’s unbelievable firepower.

But, it might not be seen as the most pressing area of the pitch to drop £65m on, with Erling Haaland already leading the line with some venom, on top of Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku enjoying fine campaigns themselves.

Whereas, for £20m more, City could find their long-term heir to Rodri in Anderson, who has so often been the glue for Guardiola’s men centrally in their unbelievable title-winning exploits, having even won the Ballon d’Or during his celebrated stay at the Etihad.

But, in recent times, it’s not always been guaranteed that the World Cup-winning battler will be fit, with Anderson potentially coming in to save the day to be equally as crucial to the City midfield, if a £85m move does get over the line.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear that Anderson is in a league of his own in the Premier League as a “do-it-all midfielder-warrior” – as he was once branded by scout Ben Mattinson – with a ridiculous 8.3 ball recoveries and 7.7 duels won per game this season, backing up further claims that he is also “world-class” by commentator Jamie Martin.

While the powerful 23-year-old has consistently shone at the City Ground in the top-flight, with a standout six assists last season also sticking out, Semenyo hasn’t always found the pressures of the top division to be straightforward, as only one league goal came his way during his debut campaign on the South Coast.

He also suffered from a seven-game goalless streak earlier this season, with Semenyo perhaps falling to the wayside in Manchester, if a similar patch of form were to strike him down.

Moreover, while his versatility to line up as a right winger, left winger, or striker will be seen as a positive, it does also mean it’s not immediately fixed where the 32-time Ghana international would come into Guardiola’s side from the get-go.

Whereas, having also starred as a central midfield beast for England, when previously winning nine combined duels and tackles versus Latvia, Anderson would be confident of immediately coming into the heart of Guardiola’s midfield and making a difference, as the addition of the lively 23-year-old potentially pushes City to title glory.

Man City now favourites to sign £75m+ attacking star alongside Semenyo

Perfect for Chermiti: Rohl is driving Rangers interest in “polarising” star

Glasgow Rangers centre-forward Youssef Chermiti has a lot of work to do to justify the £8m transfer fee that Kevin Thelwell agreed to pay Everton for his services in the summer.

The Portugal U21 international has only scored two goals in 21 appearances in all competitions for the club so far, which is not good enough from their most expensive signing in 25 years.

However, his performance against St Mirren on Tuesday night showed signs of promise. He provided a brilliant assist for Emmanuel Fernandez’s goal, whipping a perfect cross in from the left, and won five of his nine duels, per Sofascore.

Whilst he has to do a lot more to prove that the Gers did not overpay for his services in the summer transfer window, it was a step in the right direction for Chermiti.

Danny Rohl driving Rangers interest in EFL star

The Light Blues are now reportedly keen to bring in a player who could work well alongside the Portuguese centre-forward in the second half of the season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to TEAMtalk, Danny Rohl is taking a leading role in recruitment for the Scottish Premiership giants in the upcoming January transfer window, and a versatile forward is one of the things on his wishlist.

The report claims that the German head coach is driving the club’s interest in a deal for Wrexham attacking midfielder Josh Windass, due to his admiration for the former Rangers man.

It adds that the Gers have already had an attempt to sign the former Light Blues attacker on loan for the second half of the season rejected by Wrexham, who are not keen on losing their star forward.

TEAMtalk suggests that a deal may not be dead in the water, though, because of Rohl’s desire to sign him, but it remains to be seen whether or not the club would be willing to do a permanent deal for the 31-year-old star.

Why Rangers should sign Josh Windass

Signing the 31-year-old attacker on a short-term loan may not have been a particularly attractive option, as it would only be a quick fix, but a permanent move for him could be interesting.

Bringing Windass in on a permanent deal, despite his age, could be a good piece of business for the Gers because he is a player who could have an immediate impact on the pitch, whilst he could then be a good role model for younger players as he moves into the final years of his career.

In the short term, the experienced forward could be perfect for Chermiti because his main position is as a second striker or attacking midfielder who can play behind a main number nine, whilst offering a significant goal threat.

Windass currently plays off Kieffer Moore, who has a similar build to Chermiti, and has produced seven goals and three assists in the Championship so far this season, per Sofascore.

In the 2024/25 campaign, the English attacker scored 13 goals and provided five assists in 44 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, whilst being managed by Rohl, which means that he already has a strong working relationship with the Rangers boss.

The English forward, who was described as a “polarising” link due to his first spell with the club by writer Kai Watson, would be perfect for Chermiti because he has the quality to provide an instant goal threat in the second striker or attacking midfield position to make up for the number nine’s struggles in front of goal.

Windass could take some of the pressure off the £8m signing’s shoulders by hitting the ground running as a goalscorer in the Premiership, as his consistency in front of goal would provide the Gers with the goals that they are currently lacking from their strikers.

Chermiti’s two assists in four Premiership starts for Rangers, per Sofascore, also suggest that he may have the creative potential to provide Windass with chances to score, which could see them strike up an effective partnership at the top end of the pitch.

Rohl could ruthlessly sell Cameron in Rangers move for £5m "sensation"

Danny Rohl could cash in on Lyall Cameron with a Rangers swoop for this star in the January transfer window.

Therefore, signing the Wrexham star on a permanent deal, if they decide that is the route to go down, could be a good piece of business for the Scottish giants.

Spurs without 4 players for ‘Boro cup clash

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has delivered disappointing injury news in his latest press conference as Spurs prepare for their clash against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.

The Lowdown: Spurs’ current injuries

The Lilywhites boss has not had the luxury of picking a starting XI from a fully fit squad in recent weeks, with a number of injuries limiting his options.

Defensive midfielder Oliver Skipp has been absent for the previous six games due to a groin strain, while Japhet Tanganga has suffered a knee injury which has kept him out for the same period of time.

January arrival Rodrigo Bentacur has also been out injured, having missed Spurs’ emphatic 4-0 victory over Leeds United. This was also the case for Lucas Moura, who was absent due to an unknown injury.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Conte’s injury update

In his latest press conference, Conte provided an injury update ahead of Tottenham’s FA Cup clash against Middlesbrough, ruling all four aforementioned players out of contention.

As quoted by football.london when asked about team news for the trip to Teesside, he stated: “Same squad as we have to face Leeds. No Skipp, Tanganga, Moura or Bentancur.”

The Verdict: Time for rotation?

Given the number of injuries with which he has to contend, Conte may be forced into starting a similar XI as to what he did at the weekend against Leeds. If he is eager to give a breather to some key players, he could seek to utilise some of Tottenham’s under-23 squad, including the highly-rated Harvey White and Dane Scarlett.

However, Middlesbrough are renowned to be a physical side. Currently sitting eighth in the Championship, Conte may have himself a dilemma thrust upon him. Does he play the kids and rotate the regulars, or does he field his strongest team possible to maximise Spurs’ chances of advancing to the quarter-finals?

His options could be limited by the continued absences of Skipp, Tanganga, Moura and Bentancur, while he may also be reluctant to throw untested youngsters into what could be a physical contest.

Wolves: Lage must axe Fabio Silva v Palace

Wolves are back in Premier League action this afternoon with a clash against Crystal Palace at Molineux in their latest attempt at moving closer to securing European football for next season.

Having lost their two previous league games against Arsenal and West Ham United, both in London, the Old Gold will be doing all they can to pick up all three points in front of their home fans today against team from the capital in Patrick Vieira’s side, who are currently three places and 10 points behind the Midlanders in the league table.

On the chalkboard

In regards to which players Bruno Lage could pick in his starting XI to take on the Eagles, one man who started last weekend against West Ham but we think should be taken out of the team on this occasion is Fabio Silva.

Since arriving at Molineux in September 2020 from FC Porto for a club-record fee of £35.6m, the 19-year-old has only netted four goals in 54 appearances across all competitions, showing that he hasn’t been particularly reliable when it comes to finding the back of the net.

Furthermore, the £19.8m-rated striker’s performance against the Hammers last weekend showed why he may not be suited to start this time around either, having had just one clear shot at goal throughout the entire 90 minutes at the London Stadium, and that was off-target.

The youngster also made just 14 accurate passes and won only one of his six duels, ultimately earning himself a disappointing overall match rating of 6.1/10. That made him the lowest-rated player from either team according to SofaScore, even lower than Francisco Trincao, who only played 60 minutes and came in for criticism from some journalists for his performance.

Labelled a potential “hindrance” for the club as a result of his poor performances in the past by Liam Keen, that is exactly what he was for Lage last time out and why he shouldn’t be given the opportunity to start again this time around, with Wolves in need for a victory to reignite their push for Europe.

With that in mind, now could be the right time for the Wolves boss to bring Raul Jimenez back into the team this afternoon and hope that he can do the business for them in front of goal.

Celtic: Guidi drops Kyogo injury update

Mark Guidi has dropped a teasing injury update on Celtic centre-forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments made to Go Radio (via Vital Celtic), the journalist revealed that the centre-forward – who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since December 26 – could finally be in line for a return to first-team action after the upcoming international break.

Speaking about the current condition of the Japan international, Guidi said: “On Kyogo, well, there are one or two murmurs that he’ll be available for the first game after the international break, which is Ibrox on April 3rd.

“Now, we could see Kyogo coming on for the League Cup Final against Hibs, the impact he made with not a lot of training time behind him.

“So if it was to be the case, if that’s accurate and he’s available for the game at Ibrox, I wouldn’t imagine that he would start unless there’s an injury problem to Maeda or Giakoumakis or whatever.

“But, certainly, having somebody like Kyogo on the bench, what a lift that would give to Celtic – to the manager, to the players, to the supporters, albeit there won’t be Celtic supporters in the ground that day.

“And, if he’s required for whatever reason, to come on and give 25 minutes to half an hour, he would have that in his locker all day to go and do that.”

Postecoglou will be buzzing

Considering just how important a part of the Celtic side Kyogo has become since his £4.6m move to Parkhead last summer, should the striker indeed be in line for a return to action at Ibrox at the start of next month, it would undoubtedly be an outcome that will have Postecoglou buzzing.

Indeed, over his 14 Premiership appearances so far this season, the £4.95m-rated hitman has been in deadly goalscoring form, scoring eight goals, registering two assists and creating four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.1 shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £18k-per-week forward average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.03 in the league, however, the 27-year-old has also been in equally impressive form in cup competitions this term – bagging a further eight goals and providing three assists over 12 outings in the Europa League, Europa League qualifying and the Scottish League Cup.

As such, it is clear for all to see that the return of Kyogo for the Rangers fixture would provide Celtic’s chances of leaving Ibrox with three points with a huge boost – one that could all but seal the Premiership title for the Bhoys.

Rangers: Arfield return ‘nailed-on’

Scott Arfield is ‘nailed-on’ to return to the Rangers team for their Europa League clash with Red Star Belgrade at the expense of Fashion Sakala.

That’s according to the former Gers defender Alan Hutton, who was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Rangers are due to face reigning Serbian champions Red Star in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst selected Sakala in the right-wing position for Saturday’s win over Aberdeen, with Arfield then replacing him for the final 31 minutes.

The Dutchman did say, however, that he benched the Canadian initially in order to give him something of a rest.

The latest

Hutton fully expects Van Bronckhorst to favour one of his ‘main men’ in Arfield over Sakala given the latter’s lack of end product.

“I think Arfield comes back in for Sakala, I think that would be nailed on,” the BBC Radio 5 Live man said to FI.

“Sakala for me, I’m watching him and you just want him to relax on the ball. Everything he tries to do, he tries to just smash the ball.

“He gets into really good areas, he picks up the ball well, he runs at people. Just that final pass, that final decision can sometimes let him down.

“Arfield, he’s one of the main men for me and Van Bronckhorst, especially on European nights.”

The verdict

Arfield only actually started one of Rangers’ six group-stage games – the 1-1 draw with Brondby back in November.

But he earned a spot in Van Bronckhorst’s line-up for both legs of the play-off clash with Borussia Dortmund.

It was a somewhat tricky night for the 33-year-old in the second leg, though, as he missed a ‘big chance’, won only two out of seven duels and failed to complete either of the dribbles he attempted (via SofaScore).

But it’s possible that Van Bronckhorst values the defensive contribution he provides, with Arfield recording three interceptions in that game.

And on top of that, former Hamilton manager Brian Rice says the ‘magnificent’ £16,000-per-week veteran ‘is the only one’ in the squad who can make deadly runs from midfield.

In other news, Kevin Campbell offers his reaction as an injury blow emerges.

Zaha handball before Mateta goal

An Everton journalist has spotted what looks to be a handball by Wilfried Zaha shortly before Jean-Philippe Mateta put Crystal Palace 2-0 up in their FA Cup clash this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Comfortable win

It was a comfortable win for the home side in the end at Selhurst Park, despite the visitors actually starting the game quite well.

Unfortunately for Frank Lampard’s side, Marc Guehi gave the Eagles the lead with a header from a corner, before Mateta, Zaha and Will Hughes added to their misery.

Nonetheless, there seems to be a bit of controversy surrounding the second Palace goal.

The Latest: Zaha handball

Taking to Twitter, after footage appearing to show Zaha slapping the ball shortly before Mateta scored was shared across the platform, The Liverpool Echo reporter Adam Jones was left baffled that the goal was not ruled out, as VAR seemed to miss the incident in the build-up.

He fumed: “Errrrr, excuse me? Didn’t see this on the other side of the pitch at the time but that’s absolutely blatant isn’t it?”

The Verdict: Should not have stood

Given that Zaha then collected the ball again on the wing shortly after the handball, before firing in his cross for Mateta to score, VAR should have intervened and ultimately the goal should not have stood.

Patrick Vieira’s men were already 1-0 up at that point, but given Everton’s bright start, they could easily have got back into the game had VAR intervened and the goal not stood.

It was not just Jones who seemed confused by the incident, and the Toffees can feel quite hard done by over Zaha’s unpunished indiscretion.

In other news, a ‘big blow’ has now emerged for this Toffees ace

Celtic: Kelly set for long-term deal

Celtic look set to secure the signing of Daniel Kelly on a professional contract in the coming days.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Record, who claim that, despite interest from both Liverpool and Arsenal, the 16-year-old starlet has rejected the chance to move south of the border, and has instead agreed a deal which will see him remain at Parkhead for the next three years – something which should be completed by the end of the week.

The report goes on to state that the midfielder, who was also linked with a move to Portuguese giants Benfica last year, decided to remain in Glasgow after being convinced that there is a clear pathway to the first-team under the management of Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou will be buzzing

With one of Celtic’s most exciting up and coming academy prospects, Ben Doak, reported to be on the verge of sealing a move to Liverpool, the news that the Bhoys have fought off the Reds’ interest in another of their more promising starlets in the shape of Kelly is sure to have left Postecoglou buzzing.

Indeed, Celtic have formed something of an unwanted habit of losing their more talented youngsters to bigger clubs in recent seasons, with the likes of Josh Adam, Connor McBride and Liam Morrison all moving on to pastures new for little or no transfer fee whatsoever.

And, considering just how highly-rated Kelly is by those at Parkhead, the potential of the Hoops yet again waving goodbye to a teenager who appears to have an extremely bright future in the professional game would have undoubtedly come as a gutting blow to the Greek-Australian manager and his side.

However, with it now looking as if the 16-year-old has rejected the opportunity to join both Liverpool and Arsenal in favour of continuing his development at Celtic, supporters of the club and Postecoglou alike will certainly be extremely relieved.

Liverpool backed to sign Bellingham

Liverpool are more likely to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham than Manchester City this summer, according to Bundesliga journalist Sebastien Kolsberger.

The Lowdown: Bellingham a special talent

The 18-year-old has emerged as one of the most prodigious players in the world, excelling for Dortmund and also winning 12 caps for England already, with Jordan Henderson drooling over his ability during the most recent international break.

Bellingham has caught the eye with his brilliance in the middle of the park, performing with a maturity beyond his years and being hailed as ‘fantastic’ by the Reds skipper.

The teenager has been linked with an exciting move to Liverpool in the past, and a fresh claim from the German press sounds positive in that respect.

The Latest: Journalist makes big claim

Speaking to Bernabeu Digital [via Sport Witness], Kolsberger claimed that the Reds are favourites to sign Bellingham over City, due to his personality fitting in better with Jurgen Klopp’s team:

“Jude is one of the future stars of the midfield, and all clubs want him. I think after a few years in Germany, he will return to England. Liverpool and Manchester City also want to sign him.

“But Jude is a very emotional player, which is why I think Liverpool have a better chance of signing him.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-26/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Perfect summer signing

In many ways, Bellingham should be the absolute number one transfer target for Liverpool this summer, should Dortmund make him available. He ticks every box when it comes to potentially excelling in this Reds side.

At 18, he has the world at his feet and would come in as a long-term acquisition and he is already good enough to play week in, week out, scoring three times and registering seven assists in the Bundesliga this season.

Midfield is also the key area that Liverpool could do with adding to in the summer and Bellingham’s ability to play as either a deep-lying player or more of a No.8 would enhance Klopp’s options, especially as some of his current crop are now in their 30s.

If Liverpool get a deal done, they could be signing a genuine game-changer – someone who could be a mainstay for club and country for the next ten to 15 years.

In other news, Fabrizio Romano has dropped a key Liverpool transfer claim. Read more here.

The new Dele Alli: Spurs pushing hard to sign "generational" English talent

Tottenham Hotspur need stability, and they also need a clear and attractive culture to work its way back into the stadium, lifting the fans and filling within the first-teamers confidence and identity.

With Spurs 11th in the Premier League, one win from their past seven matches, Thomas Frank is feeling the pressure, and failure to see an uptick in form over the coming weeks will send the Danish coach’s fragile tenure in a spin.

But projects take time, and Tottenham could yet create something akin to Mauricio Pochettino’s nostalgic tenure. The likes of Heung-min Son and Harry Kane were the defining figures of that fruitful era, but Tottenham created a team that purred from head to toe.

Dele Alli is a shining example in that regard, having joined from MK Dons as a teenager in 2015. The prodigy’s rise not only elevated his team but also strengthened the connection with the fanbase too. Now, ENIC Group are looking to repeat the trick.

Spurs looking to sign their new Dele Alli

Tottenham are hoping to get busy in the January transfer window. Frank’s squad is perforated with holes, and they need patching up. However, away from the more pressing need for impactful additions, Johan Langa and Fabio Paratici are looking to add youth to the ranks too.

Antoine Semenyo is among the Premier League superstars on the London club’s radar, and Guglielmo Vicario’s woes have prompted scrutiny on Spurs’s goalkeeping plans too.

But Tottenham have an eye for an up-and-coming talent, and they’ve found a target who might become one of the very best in the business in a few years.

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham have joined a long list of clubs in registering their interest in Leicester City starlet Jeremy Monga. The 16-year-old has already established himself in the Championship club’s first team.

While Chelsea, Liverpool and the Manchester giants are all namechecked, it is Tottenham who are singled out as pushing ‘very strongly’ for the left winger’s signature. One year ago, PSG came sniffing around and were informed that Monga, 15 at the time, would cost £15m. That figure is sure to have since ballooned.

Why Jeremy Monga could be the new Dele

Monga is very young, but he has already made his Premier League debut, becoming the second-youngest player in the top flight when entering the fray for soon-to-be relegated Leicester against Newcastle United in April.

Leicester were doomed, but the fact that he featured seven times until the end of the campaign makes a firm comment on his potential, with the physicality and speed to succeed at the highest level.

And yet he’s still so young. Monga is way ahead of schedule, settling into a big role at the King Power Stadium this term. In this, he could emulate Spurs’s former starboy.

Monga’s ability to carry the ball forward apace has already handed him plenty of plaudits. He has been described by journalist Graeme Bailey as being “a generational talent”, having made more senior appearances than the likes of Premier League starboys Max Dowman and Rio Ngumoha.

He has only scored once in the second tier this term, but what a goal it was. That’s a teenager with jaw-dropping technical quality. That’s a player who, should he join Tottenham, would fall into the category of Dele-esque.

Dele scored 16 goals across 39 League One fixtures in 2014/15, his final year in the EFL before being plucked up to the big time by Daniel Levy and Tottenham.

The 37-cap England international’s personal problems are deeply saddening, but there’s no question that he was one of the best young talents in the world back in his heyday, with Pochettino even saying in 2017 that he’s “the best young player” in Europe.

More of a central attacking midfielder than Monga, the parallels are still there, with the Foxes starlet boasting all he needs to emulate his older countryman and make an age-belying impact at Spurs.

Though he wouldn’t be expected to take a leading role from the off in Frank’s system, Monga has what it takes to become the club’s finest winger since someone like Son.
