Shorey stars as India Blue book spot in final against India Red

Dhruv Shorey leads the way as India Blue take the first-innings lead against India Green in the last league match of this year’s Duleep Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Sep-2018India Blue will meet India Red in the final of the Duleep Trophy 2018-19, having taken the first-innings lead in a drawn encounter against India Green at the NPR College Ground in Dindigul. Both teams had one point coming into the match and Blue got three points to Green’s solitary point after making 340 in the first innings and restricting Green to 257.In the second innings, Blue were bowled out for just 117, but with just over a session left for Green to achieve a target of 201, a draw was the most likely result. Eventually, only 5.4 overs were bowled in the final session on Saturday. Green were 20 for 2, with Blue having given the new ball to a couple of left-arm spinners in Uttar Pradesh’s Saurabh Kumar and Baroda’s Swapnil Singh.Saurabh took both wickets, of openers Prashant Chopra and Priyank Panchal, to make it seven for the match after his first-innings 5 for 98.Blue’s batting was held together mostly by Dhruv Shorey, who followed his 93 in the first innings with 40 in the second, top-scoring both times and being awarded the Man of the Match.Blue’s batting and bowling in the first innings set up the match. Along with Shorey, Faiz Fazal (76), wicketkeeper Smit Patel (51) gave the team a sound foundation, while Ricky Bhui hit 56 to ensure that Fazal’s decision to bat first was vindicated by the top order. Blue collapsed from 303 for 4 to lose six wickets for 37 runs in 11.3 overs, with medium-pacer K Vignesh taking 5 for 50.In Green’s reply, opener Chopra and captain Parthiv Patel both hit 80, but there were few other significant contributions, with Jaydev Unadkat (4 for 16) combining with Saurabh to bowl them out.In what has been a pattern in the tournament, spinners dominated in the second innings, with Aditya Sarwate taking 5 for 32 as Blue were bowled out in just 34 overs for a meagre total. However, with time running out in the game, and a rain interruption too on the last day, it was mostly of academic interest only. While the league matches were four-day affairs, the final will be a five-day game and take place at the same venue from September 4.

A release clause in the Portuguese manager's contract means that, if Liverpool are to choose Amorim as the man to replace Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season, they can do so with relative ease. reports that Amorim can be allowed to leave the Portuguese capital for as little as €15 million (£13m/$16m) when a release clause becomes active in the summer, and that fee drops to €10m (£8.5m/$10.5m) the following season.

The cost of hiring the best managers, as with signing the best players, has been on a consistent rise in recent years. Bayern Munich broke a world record by paying €30m (£26.4m/$32.4m) to appoint RB Leipzig's Julian Nagelsmann in 2021, and Chelsea spent £21.5m ($27m) bringing Graham Potter to Stamford Bridge from Brighton the following year. By comparison, Amorim's fee looks like a snip.

DID YOU KNOW?

Liverpool's first-choice to replace Klopp, Xabi Alonso, has turned down the opportunity to return to Anfield this summer by committing to stay another season at Bayer Leverkusen. The hotly-rated Spanish boss broke the hearts of Reds and Bayern Munich fans as he opted against leaving the potential Bundesliga champions.

Former India captain Ajit Wadekar dies aged 77

Ajit Wadekar, who led India to historic series wins in the West Indies and England in 1971, has died at the age of 77. He had been suffering from a prolonged illness.Wadekar, an aggressive left-hand batsman and an excellent catcher in the slips, played 37 Tests, scoring 2113 runs at an average of 31.07. His one century, a match-winning 143 at Wellington, came during India’s 1967-68 tour of New Zealand, where they won a series away from home for the very first time.It was a time when India, led by Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, were growing into a genuine force in world cricket. And it was Wadekar who, with Pataudi sitting out the tour of the West Indies in 1970-71, took over the captaincy, thanks to the casting vote of Vijay Merchant, the chairman of selectors.Fuelled by the batting exploits of Dilip Sardesai and the debutant Sunil Gavaskar, India would go on to clinch a 1-0 victory over Sir Garfield Sobers’ side. When they followed that up with another 1-0 win in England, inspired by BS Chandrasekhar’s 6 for 38 at The Oval, many considered India unofficial world champions.Getty Images

Another series win, against England at home in 1972-73, burnished Wadekar’s standing as captain, but the end, when it came, was swift and cruel – a 3-0 series loss on the 1974 tour of England, which included the infamous 42 all out – still India’s lowest-ever Test total – at Lord’s. Sacked as captain after the tour, Wadekar announced his retirement. In later years, Wadekar served as India’s first ever official head coach, taking over in 1992 and overseeing a four-year period in which they were dominant on spinning tracks at home, memorably blanking England 3-0 in 1992-93. In December 2011, the BCCI conferred him with the CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sir Richard Hadlee diagnosed with bowel cancer

Sir Richard Hadlee has been diagnosed with bowel cancer. According to a statement released by New Zealand Cricket on behalf of his wife Lady Dianne Hadlee, he has undergone surgery to remove a tumour.”Last month, Richard had a routine, 3-year colonoscopy, and we discovered that he has bowel cancer,” the statement said. “He has since had an operation to remove the tumour. This operation went extremely well and he has made an excellent recovery from surgery.”As a safeguard, further treatment in the form of chemotherapy will commence shortly and last for a few months. It is expected that, in time, he will have a full recovery.”Hadlee, 66, is widely considered New Zealand’s greatest ever cricketer, and was one of the four great fast-bowling allrounders of the 1980s alongside Imran Khan, Ian Botham and Kapil Dev. He took 431 Test wickets – a world record at the time of his retirement – in 86 matches at an average of 22.29, and also contributed 3124 runs at 27.16.His performances were central to New Zealand’s rise as a serious cricketing power, as match figures of 7 for 130 and 10 for 100 in their first ever wins over Australia and England, respectively, would suggest. In all, he took 173 wickets at 13.06 in New Zealand Test wins.During his last tour of England, in 1990, he was knighted for his services to cricket.

Hot and cold Sunrisers face Kings XI juggernaut

Big PictureInsane bowling. Inept batting. Sunrisers Hyderabad have decided to be that kid in class who knows pi to the 100th decimal, but blanks so badly when asked about something like social media that they file a complaint against the English professor for not teaching them Instagrammar.Manish Pandey for example, has 88 runs in five innings at a strike-rate of 118. Meanwhile, the man he has kept out of the Indian XI in limited-overs cricket began the IPL with a 14-ball fifty; KL Rahul’s form has gone a long way to ensuring Kings XI are an all-round threat. R Ashwin’s captaincy has been a big plus as well, forcing opposition batsmen to tackle their weaknesses while his own sits pretty atop the sixes chart (ahead of Wednesday’s game). With Tom Moody at the helm, Sunrisers don’t lack for tactical resources. And Kane Williamson has loads of practice leading a side whose stronger suit is its bowling and which also relies rather heavily on him to score runs (and scoring them is what he has been doing so far this tournament). Things could get pretty funky on Thursday when these two teams meet.In the news Chris Gayle missed Kings XI’s previous game on Monday with some soreness. Will he be good to go on Thursday? Bhuvneshwar Kumar is also nursing an injury. He was asked to stay back in Hyderabad instead of playing against Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday so that he has a better chance of recovery. The likely XIsSunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Kane Williamson (capt), 3 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 4 Manish Pandey, 5 Yusuf Pathan, 6 Deepak Hooda, 7 Mohammad Nabi, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Sandeep Sharma, 10 Siddarth Kaul, 11 Basil ThampiKings XI Punjab: 1 Chris Gayle/Aaron Finch, 2 KL Rahul (wk), 3 Mayank Agarwal, 4 David Miller/Marcus Stoinis, 5 Karun Nair, 6 Yuvraj Singh/Manoj Tiwary, 7 R Ashwin (capt), 8 Andrew Tye, 9 Barinder Sran, 10 Ankit Rajpoot, 11 Mujeeb ur RahmanWhat happened in the previous contestRashid was taken apart by Gayle, who scored his sixth IPL century. Correction: a sixth, match-winning IPL century, as Kings XI defended 193 with ease.Strategy punt Andrew Tye is Kings XI’s premier death bowler, with an economy rate of 7.3. But there may be reason to try him with the new ball: the Australian quick has dismissed Williamson two times in nine balls in T20 cricket, giving away only six runs. In T20s, Sandeep Sharma has dismissed Chris Gayle four times in 47 balls, giving away only 55 runs.Stats that matter If Williamson can hold Tye off, his team has a good chance of cashing in at the end. All the other Kings XI bowlers combined have an economy rate of 12.1 between overs 16 and 20. Finishing is an area Sunrisers’ batsmen definitely need to improve; as things stand they have the highest dot-ball percentage (40.4) at the death. Rahul needs 39 runs to complete 1000 in the IPL. As of April 23, Kings XI have been burying teams under Smart Runs. As per ESPNcricinfo’s new metrics to make sense of the shortest format, Gayle and Rahul have so far contributed an extra 80 runs to the team’s aggregate. Aaron Finch might not be the best asset against Sunrisers: he’s made only 33 runs in 37 balls against Bhuvneshwar, while being dismissed twice, and 15 runs off eight balls against Rashid Khan, while being dismissed twice. Fantasy picksBarring the usual suspects – Gayle, Rahul, Shakib, Rashid and Williamson – keep an eye on Siddarth Kaul. He has bowled 11 overs between 7 and 14 for an economy rate of 6.7, and nine overs between 16 and 20 for an economy rate of 6.8.

India wary of Bangladesh's 'tenacity' – Karthik

Bangladesh may have come a great distance over the past few years. They may have orchestrated two excellent chases in the Nidahas Trophy to dump the hosts out of their own party. But for India, a loss to them is still cause for mild embarrassment. So said wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik on the eve of the final. The teams have played seven T20Is against each other, India victorious on each occasion. As a result, Rohit Sharma’s side are the more fancied team, even though several of their marquee limited-overs players have not made the trip.”Let’s be fair to India as a cricketing nation – whether we play the second string or the first-string team it’s always the case [that a win is expected],” he said. “When we play Bangladesh and we win it’s like : ‘Ok, you’ve won against Bangladesh’. But if we lose it’s like: ‘Dude, you’ve lost to Bangladesh. What are you doing?’ I’m sure that’s going to be there. With Rohit, the first thing that he said was that although we have a few of our other players missing, we’re looking to play exactly the sort of cricket that we’ve played in the past one year.”But especially in subcontinent conditions, Bangladesh are a very good team. They are known for their tenacity. They really try hard. They are team that achieved Test status not many years ago, and from there on they have propelled in all formats of the game and done well for themselves.”How the India side has played has been to hold themselves to demanding standards. Although the attack is inexperienced, they remain the best-drilled side on show in Colombo, their top order having performed in every game. Part of what has fueled their limited-overs success has been the ruthless edge to their play, and their ability to quickly address weaknesses. After an indifferent outing in the field in the first match against Bangladesh, India reflected on the factors that had contributed to the performance.”When you play international cricket you’re used to a certain amount of crowd – that’s one of the things that spurs you on, and it has a massive effect on fielding,” Karthik said. “When the home team is not playing, the crowds are small and sometimes the motivation is not there. The second match that we played I thought we fielded the poorest, against Bangladesh. We dropped about five catches. We weren’t the usual Indian team that’s known for it’s fielding.”The fielding coach was straightaway in our ears and pointing it out, saying that’s not happening irrespective of whether we have a crowd or not, whether the outfield is good or not. We’ve set a certain benchmark for ourselves and we need to keep hitting that benchmark every time we step on to that field. I think that message was taken loud and clear by the boys. I think we came back all guns blazing the next time we played Sri Lanka and in the next game against Bangladesh.”Across the six games so far, India are the only side to have won batting first, in the second match against Bangladesh.”Chasing is not necessarily easy. I don’t know much about the wicket, but if the dew settles it’s much easier for the team that bats second,” Karthik said. “If there’s no dew then it’s going to be a great game. If the wicket is sow and it’s going to turn, it will be a challenge. The team that bowls better has a better chance to win the final.”

Virat Kohli penalised for poor on-field behaviour

The India captain was fined 25% of his match fee and received one demerit point for his conduct with on-field umpire Michael Gough on the third day in Centurion

Wessels: Kohli’s passion and aggression good for cricket

India captain Virat Kohli has been penalised by the ICC for his behaviour with on-field umpire Michael Gough on the third day of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Centurion. Kohli was fined 25% of his match fee and received one demerit point for “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.The incident occurred in the 25th over of South Africa’s second innings. Kohli persistently complained to Gough about the state of the damp ball – play had resumed after a rain interruption – in the final session, and then threw the ball into the ground in an “aggressive manner,” according to the ICC.Kohli pleaded guilty to the Level 1 charge and accepted the sanction imposed by ICC match referee Chris Broad.India were also unhappy when they were taken off for bad light; fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah had beaten the bat twice in the over just before that. Kohli and India coach Ravi Shastri were seen going to the match referee’s room immediately. The conversation looked animated.Bumrah later said in a press conference that the ball got wet as soon as they took the field, and also that they wanted to carry on when they were taken off because “they were carrying a good momentum”.This is the first demerit point Kohli has received since the introduction of the system of demerit and suspension points. If he accumulates four or more demerit points within 24 months of the first such incident, they will convert into suspension points and a ban from a Test or two limited-overs internationals, whichever format he is likely to be selected for comes first.

It’s a match-winning innings.”Stokes then claimed the wicket of Rob Nicol as Otago folded to 83 all out. Legspinner Todd Astle, who is in the New Zealand one-day squad to face West Indies later this month, cleaned up the innings with 3 for 18.

Crystal Palace In Talks To Sign 26-Year-Old England International

Crystal Palace have been linked with a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson this summer and more details regarding the potential transfer have now emerged.

What's going on with Dean Henderson?

The Eagles are looking to sign a new 'keeper between now and the end of August when the window slams shut, with Vicente Guaita expected to move on.

It is Henderson who has reportedly emerged as a target for Palace in recent days, with the 26-year-old's plans a little up in the air at the moment. It is clear that Andre Onana has come in as first-choice between the sticks at United, while a return to Nottingham Forest hasn't developed, having been on loan there last season.

The one-cap England international is at a point in his career where he wants to be playing regularly, especially as it would aid his chance if making the Three Lions' squad for Euro 2024 next summer.

Now, a fresh update regarding Palace's interest in Henderson this summer has emerged, with a move looking increasingly likely.

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Will Crystal Palace sign Dean Henderson?

According to a key update from talkSPORT, Palace's plan is to sign the Englishman on loan this summer, potentially snapping him up on a permanent basis next year, and talks are now underway:

"Crystal Palace have held talks with Manchester United over a deal to sign Dean Henderson, talkSPORT understands. Palace boss Roy Hodgson has been desperate to sign a new goalkeeper after Vicente Guaita told the club he wanted to leave.

"And talkSPORT understands that discussions held are with regards to a loan move with the option to make the deal permanent.

"The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest and helped them stay in the Premier League. A permanent move to the City Ground had been expected but a deal could not be struck with United."

This could be the ideal scenario for all parties, allowing Henderson the move away that he needs, but giving Palace a season to assess whether he is worthy of being a permanent signing or not.

The United man has certainly proved his worth in the past, impressing at Forest last season before an injury ended his campaign prematurely, being hailed as "incredible" by Antonio Conte.

Henderson could be a really strong signing and an upgrade on Guaita, assuming the latter moves on, and at 26, he is still young for a goalkeeper and should only improve as the years pass, particularly if he can enjoy regular starts moving forward.

He is an extremely confident player who has total faith in his ability, and if were to come in and hit the ground running for Palace, he could help elevate them to another level moving forward, proving to be good with the ball at his feet and an expert shot-stopper.

To have played for both England and United speaks volumes, and while a move away from Old Trafford makes sense now, 13 clean sheets in 29 appearances for arguably the biggest club in the world is a good return, also winning an FA Cup along the way.

Tottenham: Spurs "Burst Into Bidding" For "Devastating" Star

Tottenham Hotspur have "burst into the bidding" to sign Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie and they could hijack Serie A giants Juventus, according to reports.

Who will Spurs sign?

Alongside the possible addition of a central defender or two, which is rumoured to be a major priority for Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, the north Londoners could also sign a new midfielder.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who has been a regular at Tottenham since he joined from Southampton in 2020, is realistically heading towards the exit door as Atletico Madrid push to sign him.

The La Liga side recently had a bid rejected for Hojbjerg, according to The Times (via SB Nation), but it is believed there is still confidence a deal can be struck for the Dane.

If he departs N17, Spurs will apparently scour the market for a replacement, leading to links with the likes of Chelsea's Conor Gallagher and, of course, Kessie.

The Ivorian, who only joined Barca last summer as a free agent last summer from AC Milan, has struggled for consistent starting places and there is a strong belief Xavi could let him go.

Tottenham are one of the sides to have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old who was once a San Siro star, and journalist Jordi Battle has an update on the matter.

The reporter, writing for Mundo Deportivo, claims Spurs have "burst into the bidding" for Kessie despite Italian giants Juve also making a push.

Massimiliano Allegri's side have made a proposal to the African to join them on loan with an option to buy, but Tottenham could hijack them as they storm into the race.

This comes as Barca apparently work to release Kessie this summer.

What's been said about Franck Kessie?

The former Milan star has been praised by sections of the media, including former Spurs keeper Paul Robinson, who once called Kessie an "amazing player" when commentong on his previous links to Tottenham.

"Kessie would fit the bill," said Robinson to Football Insider.

"He is strong, quick and effective at both ends of the pitch. He ticks a lot of boxes.

“There is no doubting that he is an amazing player. The question is, would he come in and command a starting spot? Hojbjerg and Bentancur have done extremely well. [Yves] Bissouma has struggled to get a look in at times.

“Would Kessie upset that midfield? Maybe but I don’t think it’s a certainty. It’s really important that Spurs sign better than what they already have."

Former Italy striker Antonio Cassano, meanwhile, showered with Kessie praise during his arguable peak years so far at Milan – even comparing the player to Man City legend and former Spurs coach Yaya Toure.

“I want Kessie in my team, he scores, he assists, he has personality," said Cassano.

"He has quality, he doesn’t lose the ball, he is intelligent. I’m watching him carefully, against Roma he was devastating.

“He reminds me of the Yaya Touré of the best times. He is a different player, but in terms of impact. He is holding Milan’s midfield alone.”
