Callum Ferguson's maiden T20 ton sets up Nottinghamshire rout

Worcestershire 206 for 2 (Ferguson 102*, Moeen 65) beat Nottinghamshire 134 (Mullaney 55, Parnell 3-20, Brown 3-21) by 72 runs
ScorecardMartin Guptill is a tough act for any batsman to follow but Worcestershire may not miss the hard-hitting Kiwi for very long if Callum Ferguson performs in the way he did here as the Rapids maintained their momentum in the Vitality Blast.Ferguson’s first T20 hundred in 88 attempts helped the Rapids build their biggest total of the season, one that proved far too much for Nottinghamshire Outlaws, whose grip on the trophy they won so impressively last season is looking decidedly shaky.Ferguson’s unbeaten 102 off 56 balls is the second personal milestone he has achieved during his two spells at New Road this summer.  He opened his first visit by hitting 192 against Leicestershire in the Royal London One-Day Cup, easily his best in List A cricket. As it happens, Guptill signed off with 102 against Northamptonshire in the last of his seven Vitality Blast matches before leaving to join Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League.Worcestershire have now won seven of their nine completed matches and lead the North Group by three points as they seek to reach finals day for the first time, having been losing quarter-finalists three times. They had targeted this match as one that might be a yardstick of how far they are capable of progressing and in the end exceeded the best hopes.”Nottinghamshire are a really good side and that was a big game for us,” Ferguson said afterwards. “We thought 160 or 170 would maybe be a par score on this pitch after getting 200 we were confident we could defend the total, especially on a surface that we felt was slowing up towards the end of our innings.”It was a really good performance and sets us up nicely for the rest of the competition.”Nottinghamshire seemed to have corrected their losing habit at home this season, winning their last two fixtures in front of packed houses at Trent Bridge, including a nine-run victory over East Midlands rivals Derbyshire.Yet, even with Alex Hales back from a side injury to play his first domestic match for two months, they could never reach the scoring rate needed to have a realistic chance of chasing down a target of 207 after Ferguson and Moeen Ali had put on an exhibition of destructive batting that even the most partisan in the home crowd had to applaud. After Hales had chipped Wayne Parnell straight to mid-off, their best hope of getting anywhere close ended in a fashion that rather summed up their night when Steven Mullaney, the one Nottinghamshire batsman who had looked capable of making a meaningful game of it, was run out for 55 when he made the schoolboy error of failing to ground his bat after comfortably completing a single. After his demise, the Outlaws capitulated all too rapidly. Billy Root and Jake Libby were out in the same Patrick Brown over. The last five Nottinghamshire wickets fell in the space of three overs. Parnell claimed 3 for 20, finishing the match off with two in two balls, but too many Nottinghamshire batsmen gave their wickets away cheaply.Joe Clarke had been an early scalp for Harry Gurney after Worcestershire had opted to bat first, chipping an easy return catch to the left-armer in the second over of the innings, but there was no more success for the Nottinghamshire bowlers until the 15th over as Ferguson and Moeen took turns to find gaps in the field.Moeen was ruthlessly brutal, clearing the rope four times in his 36-ball 65, a couple of blows threatening the upper levels of the Radcliffe Road stand as Samit Patel suffered the indignity of conceded 19 in an over.Having been 51 for 1 at the end of the Powerplay, Worcestershire powered on relentlessly to be 83 for 1 at the halfway stage, then adding 47 in three overs to be 138 for 1 after 14 before Dan Christian took a well-judged catch on the off-side as Moeen miscued Ish Sodhi. With Ross Whiteley, never one to pass up a chance to throw the bat, taking over from Moeen, there was no loss of momentum in the Worcestershire innings, 60 runs coming in the final six overs, which was just enough time for Ferguson to reach three figures. He said that the confidence shown in him by his team-mates is helping him with the pressure of trying to pick up where Guptill left off.”Guppy is a tough act to follow but there is a lot of belief in the dressing room and I guess some of that rubs off on you as an individual,” he said. “And when you get the chance to  bat with Moeen Ali when he is in that kind of mood it helps too.”I’m enjoying my time here. I’ve played most of career in Australia batting the middle order so I have really enjoyed the opportunity to bat higher up the list.”

Southampton: Martin’s ‘talented’ academy star could replace Sulemana

The list of talent being churned off the conveyor belt at Southampton is never-ending, with the South Coast club providing the platform for several players in their rise to stardom.

Of course, the academy graduate that every Premier League club will know in recent times is James Ward-Prowse. The creative maestro who boasts a wand of a right foot was integral to the Saints keeping their top-flight status for almost a decade before departing for pastures new, completing a £30m transfer to West Ham United this summer.

The Englishman has since become an instant revelation in east London, chalking up three goals and two assists so far, but he isn't the only academy player to have departed Southampton and risen to prominence elsewhere.

Gareth Bale is the biggest icon in the world of football to have been unleashed from the academy at St Mary's, but the likes of Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Theo Walcott have had or are having illustrious careers at the top of world football and in the ever-changing nature of the modern game, the Saints continue to unearth the next stars in the making.

17-year-old Samuel Amo-Ameyaw is right at the summit of that list.

Who is Samuel Amo-Ameyaw?

He only turned 17 in July, but Amo-Ameyaw is carrying the torch for the next generation of academy stars.

The pacey and direct winger, renowned for leaving defenders in his wake and gliding across the pitch in a perpetual motion, has made a sharp rise towards the first-team picture, enabled by Southampton's relegation to the Championship.

Southampton manager Russell Martin.

After signing his scholarship with the club last year, the teenager said: “My aim is to get into the first team as quick as possible, but first I’ve got to do well with the 18s and progress," and he's already ticked off that box.

Impressing in the Premier League 2 last season, scoring four goals in 12 appearances, the winger was rewarded with his first competitive start for the club in the EFL Cup defeat against Gillingham and impressed on the night.

Although Southampton bowed out against lower-league opposition, Russell Martin was encouraged by what he saw from his youthful side and Amo-Ameyaw was at the forefront of the praise having recorded more successful dribbles (4) than any other player on the pitch.

Speaking after his mature display, Martin said: "Sam Amo was outstanding, really pleased with him. Kami Doyle when he came on was great, Jayden [Meghoma] was fantastic, so that probably sums the night up, that those three were the real standouts for me."

The "talented" youngster – as dubbed by journalist Alfie House – clearly has a lot of healthy competition in the underage groups but having appeared on three occasions in the Championship this term, the teenager is competing for a place in the senior setup.

In his most recent Premier League 2 match, Amo-Ameyaw scored and assisted against West Ham, perhaps using the distaste in his mouth after being left out of the first-team as fuel to show Martin what he's capable of.

Southampton are enduring a torrid run in the Championship, losing four consecutive matches, while their wingers, including club record signing Kamaldeen Sulemana, have dramatically underperformed in recent weeks.

How has Kamaldeen Sulemana performed this season?

Since completing a £24.6m move from Rennes in January, Sulemana has only recorded three goal contributions in three goal contributions in 21 appearances, failing to make an impact so far in the Championship.

The Ghanaian winger has made three substitute appearances this season, averaging a lowly Sofascore rating of 6.3 and only recorded an xG of 0.12, losing possession on nine occasions and completing 42% of his dribbles, emphasising the minuscule threat he's had on the pitch when given the chance.

Southampton winger Kamaldeen Sulemana.

It's fair to say that more is expected of a club-record signing, especially after dropping to Championship level, but he is currently being kept out of the team by Samuel Edozie and Ryan Fraser while his frustrations were topped off in the 4-1 defeat to Leicester following a red card, although it was later overturned.

When he arrived in England, Sulemana was expected to be "unstoppable" in the Premier League – as dubbed by journalist Adam Bate – who compared him to some of the best dribblers in the world upon arrival.

While he is yet to live up to that hype, he could soon spring to life and start delivering match-winning displays but until he does, Amo-Ameyaw will feel he deserves more chances to impress in the first-team, especially given their current faltering approach.

Liverpool: Reds could sign £15m Caicedo clone at Anfield

Liverpool surely need to sign another midfielder before the transfer window slams shut this week, but whether Jurgen Klopp's side do as such is another question.

Will Liverpool sign anyone before transfer deadline day?

According to The Athletic's Carl Anka, Liverpool have held an interest in Bayer Leverkusen holding midfielder Exequiel Palacios this summer following Fabinho's £40m sale to Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ittihad.

Despite this, Klopp has received a blow after the Bundesliga club's managing director for sport, Simon Rolfes, has stated that Palacios is going nowhere this year.

The report alludes to embryonic Manchester United interest, and while the 24-year-old is deemed untouchable by Leverkusen, the late stage of the window means Liverpool need to test some outfits' resolve to complete their rebuild.

How good is Exequiel Palacios?

Palacios might be a name few have heard on Merseyside, but Xabi Alonso and the Leverkusen support are waxing lyrical over the Argentine's midfield skills over in Germany, with his manager lauding his "excellent" progress over the past year.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

Having basked in footballing glory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with Argentina, the 25-cap international would link up with compatriot Alexis Mac Allister at Anfield in a move that would likely enhance the cohesion at the club.

Liverpool were left hot under the collar after missing out on both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea earlier in August, despite agreeing lucrative deals for both, and were forced to swoop for 30-year-old Stuttgart midfielder Wataru Endo for £16m to combat the absence of a No 6.

moises-caicedo-tottenham-hotspur-chelsea-aston-villa-postecoglou-douglas-luiz

Caicedo, in particular, would have been a superlative addition to a prestigious club targetting a resurgence after falling by the wayside last term, having dazzled for Brighton & Hove Albion last season, earning an average league rating 7.08 – as per Sofascore – after completing 89% of his passes and averaging 2.7 tackles per match, also earning praise as a “machine man” by renowned scout Jacek Kulig.

The Ecuadorian ranks among the top 4% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 11% for passes attempted, the top 12% for tackles and the top 17% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref, emphasising his stunning skill set that left the Reds and Chelsea oh-so desperate for his services.

Caicedo happens to be listed as a comparable player via FBref to Palacios, who ranks among the top 7% of positional peers for passes attempted, the top 4% for tackles and the top 3% for interceptions per 90.

As a result, Liverpool could land a tailor-made alternative, if they are able to complete an unlikely swoop.

The £15m-rated hotshot recorded an average league score of 7.03 last season, completing 83% of his passes and averaging 2.3 tackles per outing, highlighting a similar level of robustness to the new Chelsea phenom.

Klopp must now push to sign the Leverkusen ace before the market closes later this week, eradicating the doubt that has seeped into the club's early-season efforts after a tumultuous transfer window.

Tasmania use first-ever concussion sub and take big lead

Victoria lost their last six wickets for a mere 10 runs on the second day, before Tasmania’s top order bolstered their first-innings advantage at the MCG

Tasmania rattled through Victoria’s lower order and forged into a strong lead through the efforts of former Test batting pair Alex Doolan and George Bailey on day two of the Sheffield Shield match at the MCG.Fuelled by a pair of four-wicket hauls to Gabe Bell and Thomas Rogers, the Tigers are in position to win their first outright points of the season after a pair of hefty losses to Western Australia and Queensland in the opening two rounds. In pursuit of the Tigers’ first-innings 172, the hosts seemed reasonably positioned at 4 for 134 with Marcus Harris and Daniel Christian in occupation. However, Harris’ exit for 86 signalled a shattering collapse, as the last six wickets went down for a mere 10 runs. Earlier, Victoria had lost their first four for 25, but were resuscitated to an extent by the century stand between Harris and Christian. The Tigers’ reply began steadily as Doolan found help from the erstwhile out-of-touch Jake Doran. Doran, who had been dropped after the first two Shield rounds, was parachuted into the match as a concussion substitute – the first in a first-class game – after Jordan Silk suffered delayed effects from being struck on the helmet by a Peter Siddle bouncer on day one. Cricket Australia recorded a marked increase in concussions this year when releasing their annual study of injury statistics, though this was partly attributed to greater awareness of the issue. The move to introduce concussion subs in the Sheffield Shield was formalised in August, after the ICC cleared the change while allowing the tournament to retain its first-class status.Upon Doran’s dismissal it was the captain, Bailey, who provided accompaniment to thoroughly frustrate the Bushrangers. Neither Doolan nor Bailey, both of whom played for Australia’s Test side over the 12 months from November 2013 to October of the following year, are in serious contention for selection in this year’s Ashes series.

Wolves Closer To Signing £4m "Mr Consistent"

It’s been a summer full of drama for Wolverhampton Wanderers, however enlightening news could soon surround Molineux with a fresh update regarding target Aaron Cresswell reported.

The Midlands club have suffered during the break, climaxing with former manager Julen Lopetegui stepping away from the job just six days prior to the 2023/24 Premier League opener at Old Trafford.

Luckily for the Old Gold, former Bournemouth boss Gary O’Neil has taken the reins from the Spaniard in a quick change in power, however the financial pressures continue to lurk.

What’s the latest on Aaron Cresswell to Wolves?

As reported last month by The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas, Wolves were reported to be ‘in talks’ with West Ham United over left-back Cresswell.

There has since been a significant update amid the chaos in the Midlands, with Football Insider claiming that O’Neil could soon secure the first signing of his reign with a deal ‘expected’ to be completed with the Englishman.

West Ham are reportedly holding out for a fee of around £4m, as per the update.

How good is Aaron Cresswell?

In signing the 33-year-old, O’Neil could marshall his defence with the experience and expertise of Cresswell, who has featured in the top-flight 283 times so far during his nine-year association with the Hammers.

Having been previously hailed as “Mr Consistent” by journalist Dan Woffenden, the left-back has maintained his position as one of West Ham’s most trusted defenders, making 331 appearances in all competitions for the club.

Heading into the final year of his contract, now could be the ideal time for the Irons to cash in on their veteran, in what could be the perfect move for Wolves at this time.

Low on finances, squad members and direction, the Old Gold could find some comfort in Cresswell, who would undoubtedly be a secure addition for O’Neil to integrate into the defence.

Current left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri has been linked with a move away, leaving the Midlands side needing a left-sided defender to take into the new campaign, with only Hugo Bueno and makeshift full-back Toti Gomes available in such position.

West Ham'sAaron Cresswell

While the introduction of the 33-year-old veteran would be fundamental to Wolves’ hopes of competing in the league throughout the upcoming season, it could be a sucker punch for Bueno, who would face another hurdle in his bid to rise up the pecking order at Molineux.

Despite only being 20 years of age, it looked as though the Spaniard was breaking through as being the club’s favoured left-back as communicated by his 21 appearances and 16 starts last term.

In signing the Englishman, the youngster could see his progression halted, with the West Ham marvel offering more of a progressive threat on the left side, as highlighted by his average of 5.84 progressive passes per 90 to Bueno’s 2.68 last season.

Given the severity of the issues at Molineux at present, and the repercussions that could come as a result of failing to address the problems on the pitch.

In the £4m-rated full-back, there would be little risk of error in an experienced professional who has spent the majority of his playing career within the walls of the Premier League.

While Bueno has shown great progress, the years of exposure to the challenges in the top-flight make the task a thing of second nature for Cresswell, rather than acting as a point to prove for the Spaniard at a time when room for error is minimal.

Everton: "Phenomenal" star won’t be joining Everton

Everton are now unlikely to sign Southampton centre-back Mohammed Salisu in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

How old is Mohammed Salisu?

The 24-year-old was part of a Saints team who underperformed badly last season, and it led to them being relegated from the Premier League to the Championship.

In fairness to Salisu, he did his best to prevent that from happening, arguably standing out as Southampton's best defender at times, having started 21 league games and averaged 2.5 aerial duel wins per game. He also topped the pile with his tally of 2.3 tackles per match, further outlining his influence, and played three times for Ghana at the 2022 World Cup, scoring once.

With Saints now planning for life in the Championship, it is only natural that a number of their key players will move on this summer, and Salisu falls into the bracket, no doubt wanting to remain in the Premier League, or a top division elsewhere across Europe.

Everton have been linked with a move for the defender in recent months, as they eye up reinforcements at Goodison Park in order to avoid another relegation battle, but a new update has now emerged regarding their pursuit of him.

Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu.

Are Everton going to sign Mohammed Salisu?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones admitted that Everton now look highly unlikely to sign Salisu before the new season starts, pouring cold water on the rumour in the process:

"Everton have been linked with Salisu since the end of last season but I don’t think this is one for fans to get too excited about, everyone I ask pours a bit of cold water on their chances of actually getting him.

"I think he would actually have been a very good fit for them at this stage of their build and it’s encouraging at least that they are making checks on players of this age and profile.

"But at the moment, all information suggests that while he will indeed be on his way out of Southampton, it is Monaco that have made the most progress and intend to get a deal done."

This is a blow for Everton, because while Salisu was clearly not blameless when it comes to Southampton's relegation, he is also a centre-back who has real potential, especially in a better team.

Still only 24 years of age, the Ghanaian can further grow as a player in the years that pass and Sean Dyche could be an ideal mentor for him as manager, having always made his teams defensively-strong and well-organised.

Salisu has been hailed as "phenomenal" by former Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy in the past, in particular his "aerial ability, his reading of the game, his blocks, patience, his passing", which shows what an all-round force he is as a central defender.

With Conor Coady's loan move not becoming permanent this summer, the Saints man could have been a great replacement for him, and a younger alternative, but it looks as though Everton are going to have to look elsewhere for new signings at the back now.
