Sunfoil decide against renewing CSA deal

Only one of Cricket South Africa’s three domestic sponsors remain in place ahead of the 2018-19 season, in which there could be no corporate backing for either the franchise first-class competition or the 20-over tournament. Only the 50-over format continues to be sponsored, by the financial services company Momentum.Sunfoil, the sponsors of Test cricket and both the franchise four-day and provincial three-day competitions, opted not to renew its deal with CSA at the end of the 2017-18 summer, ending a relationship which lasted seven years. ESPNcricinfo understands that the company would prefer to use its marketing budget differently. A CSA spokesperson said the organisation is at “at a more advanced stage in negotiations with a replacement and are confident we will be able to conclude the arrangement soon”.In the shortest, and most troubled format, for CSA, courier company RAM have decided not to back the T20 Challenge. RAM re-signed for the 2017-18 season, when the tournament replaced the postponed Global League T20 (GLT20), after also pulling out of a deal with CSA in 2016. For the 2018-19 summer, the competition has no sponsor and, given its timing and the uncertainty over whether another 20-over competition will also take place in South Africa, it is difficult to see how it could attract a backer. The franchise T20 tournament will be played from the April 5 to May 5, 2019, which is particularly late in the South African season. It will also clash with the IPL, meaning big-name South African players who are contracted to the Indian competition are unlikely to be able to play for their domestic franchises. Moreover, if a replacement for the GLT20 takes place, this competition will be an afterthought that could become defunct in years to come. The rest of the domestic season takes its usual form, and starts with the first-class competition in the last week in September. All six franchises will play each other, home and away. The one-day cup will be played between February 8 and April 1, with the semi-finals and final set to feature international caps. The knockouts will be played after the white-ball leg of Sri Lanka’s tour to South Africa, so the national players should be free to participate in the franchise fixtures and thereby have further preparation for the 2019 World Cup.

West Ham: Irons have been rinsed of £21m by disappointing flop

Make no mistake, West Ham United have revelled in one of the most resounding rises of any club across Europe over the past several years, now a consistent presence on the European stage after spending years languishing below expectations.

Headed by Scotsman David Moyes, who has transformed the Premier League club across his second stint, the Hammers are currently preparing for their second Europa League campaign in three years – having won the Europa Conference League last season to return to the continental tournament.

This season, West Ham have started with conviction despite selling star midfielder Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105m in July, having won three of drawn one of their opening four matches.

So much has hit the mark on the transfer front over the past several years to create this success, but one player who has not found his feet is Maxwel Cornet, who has cost a considerable amount for such little impact thus far.

How much did West Ham sign Maxwel Cornet for?

Last summer, West Ham signed Cornet for £17.5m from Burnley, with the Ivorian having impressed in Lancashire despite Burnley's relegation from the Premier League.

Described as a "fabulous goalscorer and probably one of the signings of the season" by pundit Owen Hargreaves while plying his trade in Claret Road colours, Cornet scored nine goals and supplied one assist across just 21 starting appearances for his imperilled outfit.

His impact was eye-catching to say the least, providing Sean Dyche's Burnley with a goal threat unseen from the wide flanks, a dynamism tailor-made for English football.

It came at a time where West Ham had been making increments to their side for a few years, and signed him to provide competition for the likes of Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen on the flanks.

While injuries have played detriment to his ambitions on the grass, Cornet "hasn't shown" Moyes enough in east London, according to journalist Paul Brown, and will need a drastic upswing in performance if he is to earn a starring role this season

How much has Maxwel Cornet cost West Ham in total?

Cornet is believed to earn £65k-per-week under Moyes' management, which means that he has cost the Premier League team around £21m thus far, and counting.

When considering the fact that he is yet to bag his first goal despite playing 22 matches, Cornet does appear to have lost that 'fabulous' finishing that he carried at Burnley.

West Ham United forward Maxwel Cornet.

This term, Cornet played one minute against Bournemouth in the opener but has been shackled to the bench for the past three outings, yet to add to his maiden seasonal appearance.

After such an emphatic introduction to life in England under Dyche's wing at Burnley, the West Ham faithful would be forgiven for thinking that a consistent and considerable goalscorer had been added to the ranks, but it has not been the case.

There will still be optimism that Cornet can rekindle his former form at the London Stadium, but having been left on the fringe in the opening phase of the 2023/24 campaign, it might take some doing to wedge his way back into prominence under Moyes' wing. Indeed, so far this is looking like money down the drain as far as the Hammers are concerned.

"Always pointing at people" – Pundit not happy at all with Liverpool star

Liverpool were one of the most difficult teams to predict ahead of the Premier League season. They had welcomed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to take two steps forward towards completing their midfield rebuild, but the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho forced them back to square one.

A 0-0 draw against Chelsea on the opening day didn't help solve the Liverpool puzzle either, but wins over Bournemouth, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa, alongside the arrivals of Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch since that opening day draw, suggests that Jurgen Klopp's side will be, at the very least, vying for a place in the top four this season.

The Reds' superb start to the season hasn't put an end to the criticism, however, with Manchester City legend Richard Dunne taking aim at one of Jurgen Klopp's star men.

What has Richard Dunne said?

A lot changed at Liverpool during the summer transfer window, and one of those changes was the captaincy. Following the departure of Henderson, Klopp had a decision to make, and chose to hand Virgil van Dijk the armband.

The Dutchman, of course, was already the captain of his country, so he had more than enough experience of stepping into the role. It is with his country that he received criticism from Dunne, however, even after the Netherlands defeated Greece 3-0.

Dunne said, via The Boot Room: "It has left them very weak defensively, as a team they don’t have the balance right at the moment. They won the game against Gibraltar, but against teams that are a similar level they have really struggled.

"You don’t want to pin it on certain players, but the captain of the team at centre-back, Van Dijk, is one of the players who highlights the problems in the side. He seems to be very individualistic, he’s always pointing at people, pointing out their errors and nobody is working on their errors."

The criticism comes at a troublesome time for Van Dijk, too, given that the central defender recently had a moment to forget when he was sent off against Newcastle United, and has now been banned for a further game, missing next weekend's trip to Wolves.

How has Virgil van Dijk performed this season?

Virgil Van Dijk Liverpool

Aside from his controversial sending off against Newcastle, Van Dijk has looked far closer to his best than last season. The statistics only confirm that, too. As per FBref, the Liverpool captain is putting up better numbers than during the last campaign.

Virgil van Dijk 23/24

0.87

6.96

Virgil Van Dijk 22/23

So, when it comes to performances, Van Dijk is far from struggling in the current campaign, albeit Dunne's criticism was aimed towards the defender's leadership capabilities.

As of right now, though, it is arguably too early to tell whether or not Van Dijk will be a good captain for Liverpool. As the months go on, and the Reds inevitably have their moments to forget, how Van Dijk gets them to regroup and go again will be a telling sign as to how good his leadership actually is.

Celtic Eyeing Move For "Nasty" Defender

Back for his second spell, Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to pick up where he left off at Celtic, and enjoy instant success in Scotland.

So far, however, to say that his side have not been without their struggles would be an understatement. The Scottish Premiership champions have already been dumped out of the Scottish League Cup in a shock exit at the hands of Kilmarnock, before then dropping points in a draw against St Johnstone.

Now, as the transfer window edges closer and closer to slamming shut, Rodgers is reportedly eyeing a defensive reinforcement.

What's the latest Celtic transfer news?

So far this summer, Celtic have welcomed a total of seven players, with Maik Nawrocki the pick of the bunch, who was unfortunate to suffer an instant injury. And they could yet add more reinforcements before the end of the transfer window, having reportedly made a breakthrough to sign winger Luis Palma from Aris FC.

Palma should boost Rodgers' attacking options, leaving him with just the backline to reinforce in the coming days, which could lead him back to English football off the pitch.

With that said, according to The Daily Record, Celtic are eyeing a move to sign Southampton defender Lyanco before the window shuts, with the Saints reportedly keen to part ways with the central defender this summer.

Lyanco very nearly sealed his exit away from St Mary's earlier in the window, only for his move to Besiktas to reportedly collapse.

Now, it is Celtic who could land the Brazilian, with the Hoops after a loan deal for a new defender. It's certainly one to keep an eye on in the coming days, it seems.

Should Celtic sign Lyanco?

Southampton defender Lyanco.

Welcoming a player of previous Premier League quality, especially after the injury to Nawrocki, wouldn't exactly be bad business from a Celtic point of view.

We've seen a similar stroke of genius used before when the Hoops signed Cameron Carter-Vickers from Tottenham Hotspur, before the centre-back went on to play a crucial part in their success under former manager Ange Postecoglou.

It now seems as though Celtic are hoping to repeat that smart move with a deal to sign Southampton's Lyanco. Statistically speaking, he could be a more than adequate option in Scotland, too.

The defender, as per FBref, is in the top 81 percentile for progressive carries compared to central defenders, whilst also being in the top 98 and 84 percentile for blocks and clearances.

At his best, Lyanco has earned deserved praise, including from former manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, who said, via The Daily Echo:

“I think it is important for him to understand what is necessary to be a nasty opponent, to be in the challenge and to be there.

“Your opponent can feel you because it is in the rules so there is no problem there and everything is good.

“He can be a nasty one, absolutely, because he is very good in one-on-ones and he comes from behind.

“He is not scared, and he defends on the front foot. This is what I want to see from him without all the other things that are not necessary, but he knows that.

“He has very strong belief and is a fantastic character who likes to work with us and likes to play for us. He is exactly what we need.”

Southampton Now Close To Signing "Brilliant" £25k-p/w Ace – Report

Southampton boss Russell Martin now looks set to add to his midfield following the departures of James Ward-Prowse and Romeo Lavia to West Ham United and Chelsea, according to reports.

Shea Charles, Joe Lumley and Ryan Manning have all joined the South Coast club this window as they aim to win promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt following their relegation last term to the Sky Bet Championship.

What's happening with Flynn Downes?

Last week, TEAMtalk reported that West Ham United had given Southampton the green light to bring in midfielder Flynn Downes on loan, with David Moyes keen to offload the £25k-a-week ace after successfully acquiring Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez.

Several clubs expressed interest in offering Downes an escape route from the London Stadium; however, he has elected to link up with his former Swansea City boss Martin, who sees him as a 'key addition' in the engine room for Southampton and is a huge fan of the 24-year-old.

In a recent update from Football Insider, Downes is scheduled to undergo a medical at Southampton on Monday following news that Saints secured a 'breakthrough' in negotiations last weekend. It is now expected that his loan move will be formalised in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Middlesbrough are named as the other clubs to have 'registered their interest' in the Brentwood-born star, though he now looks set to be unveiled at St Mary's Stadium imminently.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent Sport cited via Hampshire Live in the aftermath of Southampton's 4-4 draw with Norwich City in the English second-tier earlier this month, Martin spoke positively of the impact he feels Downes can have under his stewardship, stating: "An outstanding player [Downes], a favourite with the supporters and players at Swansea and I expect him to be exactly the same here.”

What is Downes good at?

Downes has all the hallmarks of a player that can play a big part for Southampton in their promotion push this season and will be aided by the fact he gained plenty of experience in the top flight in 2022/23.

Last term, Downes featured 35 times in all competitions for West Ham United, nine of which came in their ultimately successful Europa Conference League triumph, as per Transfermarkt.

Flynn Downes

Previously labelled as "brilliant" by former England international Carlton Palmer in an interview with Football League World last year, the former England Under-20 cap was tidy in possession over the course of last campaign, maintaining a pass success rate of 88.2% in the Premier League, according to WhoScored.

In comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions, Downes has excelled in the art of making blocks, successfully carrying out around 1.77 per 90 minutes across the last 365 days at the time of writing, putting him in the 92nd percentile for this metric, as per FBRef.

Given their dearth of numbers in the engine room owing to some high-profile departures at St Mary's, Southampton boss Martin will be relieved that Downes' deal to join the club on loan is now nearing completion.

McClenaghan signs up with Sydney Thunder

The left-arm quick recently opted out of an NZC central contract to pursue a career playing in T20 leagues around the world

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Oct-2017Mitchell McClenaghan has signed up with the Sydney Thunder ahead of the 2017-18 Big Bash League. The left-arm quick, who has played 48 ODIs and 28 T20Is for New Zealand, recently opted out of his NZC central contract in a bid to pursue a career playing in T20 leagues around the world.McClenaghan was part of Mumbai Indians’ title-winning squad in the 2017 season of the Indian Premier League, and followed that up by playing for St Lucia Stars in the Caribbean Premier League. He is also set to play for Durban Qalandars in the newly launched T20 Global League in South Africa shortly before he joins his Thunder team-mates in the BBL.It was while playing in the CPL that McClenaghan decided to sign for the Thunder, he told .”I spent some time at the St Lucia Stars with Shane Watson and got to know his outlook on the game and hear his passion for Sydney Thunder and the organisation,” McClenaghan said. “I’ve admired watching his career and seeing how it’s progressed. I enjoyed playing alongside him in St Lucia and I think I’ll learn a lot from him during my time with Thunder.”I grew up in Australia and watched a lot of Aussie cricket and to have the opportunity to play in the Big Bash is something I’m really looking forward to. The Big Bash is a fantastic spectacle, the atmosphere is amazing and skill levels are incredible.”McClenaghan joins a bowling group that includes quicks Pat Cummins, Clint McKay and Gurinder Sandhu as well as the legspinner Fawad Ahmed. Michael Hussey, the Thunder’s director of cricket, said signing another frontline bowler had been “top priority” ahead of the 2017-18 season.”I’m looking forward to seeing Mitch in action for Thunder, he’s a bowler with experience playing in high pressured games at both domestic and international level,” Hussey said. “We’ve been monitoring his situation with New Zealand Cricket and are pleased to be able to bring him to the Big Bash for the summer.”

'WBBL stint has transformed Harmanpreet'

India captain Mithali Raj pointed to Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana’s inputs on Australia players, courtesy their WBBL stints, as being key to plotting Australia’s downfall in the semi-final in Derby

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jul-20174:04

‘Team has learned how to make a comeback’ – Raj

Mithali Raj hailed Harmanpreet Kaur’s unbeaten 171 as the “greatest knock by an India women player” and underlined her example as the “big performance” that was needed to oust a “champion side like Australia.” She pointed to Harmanpreet’s knowledge of Australia’s bowlers, courtesy her stint at the Women’s Big Bash League, for helping them plan for the semi-final.”I think the transformation [has come] after she played in the WBBL,” she said after India’s 36-run win in Derby. “That exposure she and Smriti (Mandhana) got by interacting with other players has been massive. As I mentioned in the last press meet, against Australia it was they who were giving us more inputs about these players.””If more players are a part of these leagues, where they exchange ideas and follow the routine of other players, being part of the meetings, it will only help improve the standard of women’s cricket, as well as it’s very beneficial for youngsters and players from Indian team.”Harmanpreet’s knock covered up for a sluggish start. Not for the first time in the tournament did the openers struggle. Mandhana, who opened the tournament with 90 and 106 not out, recorded her sixth straight failure. Even in victory, the holes India needed to plug ahead of the grand finale wasn’t lost on Raj.”Ideally, I would have wanted the openers to have more runs,” she said. “But I think it is okay as long as the team looks very confident, inspired by the performances in the last two games because I personally feel that this team has changed the momentum of coming back into games.”As I have said earlier, it is important to know how to comeback to beat good sides, which we have done here. Today, I can proudly say as a captain that this team has really made a comeback. We posted a total that we haven’t done in 50-over cricket. All of them – batsmen and fast bowlers – looked in sync.”Raj attributed Harmanpreet’s turnaround to her 90-ball 60 – her first half-century of the tournament – that was key in the middle overs against New Zealand in a must-win game. For a long time, it looked like India would huff and puff to 220 there, until Veda Krishnamurthy’s blitzkrieg – an unbeaten 45-ball 70 – lifted India to 265. Her partnership with Harmanpreet gave them the momentum.”The game against New Zealand, she had runs as well as Veda had runs. They backed themselves to make fifty and those runs gave them confidence,” Raj said. “Had they not scored those runs, it would have been a different picture today. All said and done, everything happens for a reason and good. It was needed, and this knock will give her confidence tomorrow when she is in a position to take more responsibility as a batter. She will be in better shape and experience to take along.”She was equally effusive in her praise for Jhulan Goswami, who, she felt, had improved steadily after a slow start to the campaign. On Thursday, she sent back Meg Lanning with a peach that left her late to hit top of off. She finished with 2 for 35. “Well she has definitely worked on her bowling. From the first game to the Sri Lanka game and New Zealand game she was getting better in the nets,” Raj said. “It was just a matter of time. You get a couple of good spells and you get the confidence.”Raj said the win against Australia also helped break barriers on how the team would approach finals going forward. “As a team we are very excited to be a part of the World Cup final,” she said. “We knew that this tournament will not be easy but again the way the girls have turned up at every situation when the team needed, whether it be batters or bowlers, has been brilliant.”In fact the fielding, in patches, has been exceptionally good. This win has definitely changed the scenario in terms of how the girls will look at World Cup finals. It won’t be easy [to beat England] but beating Australia has given the girls a high.”Today has been our day but England have also peaked after being beaten by us in the first game. They have performed well throughout the tournament in the run-up to the finals. Playing the hosts is going to be a challenge but, having said that, this unit is up for it.”Raj equated the team’s qualification to the final as a completion of a full circle that started in 2005, when the side last had a shot at cricket’s ultimate prize. Raj and Goswami are the only two members of the current squad who were part of the side that lost to Australia in the final in 2005.”I am speechless because for me and Jhulan it is very special because we are two players from 2005 who have been with the team,” she said. “It seems like it’s going back to 2005, and I am just too happy that the girls have given us an opportunity to be a part of World Cup finals again.”
