Wolves: Keen blasts ‘awful’ VAR vs NUFC

Wolverhampton Wanderers journalist Liam Keen has blasted the ‘awful’ use of VAR during the Premier League game vs Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Defeat at St. James’ Park

The Old Gold were the visitors at St. James’ Park on Sunday afternoon, where Julen Lopetegui and his side suffered a 2-1 defeat despite Hwang Hee-Chan getting on the scoresheet just moments after coming on.

VAR was once again at the heart of a decisive moment, when the Midlands outfit were denied a penalty in the opening stages after Nick Pope took out Raul Jimenez inside the area, which caused an outrage on social media.

The Latest: Keen’s reaction

Taking to Twitter, Keen couldn’t believe that Wolves weren’t awarded a spot-kick for the foul on Jimenez. He wrote:

“VAR shambles once again. Have seen a few replays and still think it’s a penalty.

“Getting tweets from TV viewers saying VAR was checked, but nothing was made clear in the stadium. Just awful use of the technology.”

The Verdict: Wrong decision

Wolves will understandably feel hard done by with this VAR decision going against them, and the game could have had a different outcome should the visitors have netted the opener.

The Molineux outfit are now just three points above the relegation zone thanks to the results of other teams around them so need to start picking up victories should they want to avoid the drop.

Wanderers still have reverse fixtures to play against several of their bottom of the table rivals, including Leeds United and Everton, so these meetings could prove decisive in the hunt to maintain their top-flight status.

Arsenal hot contenders to sign Brandt

Arsenal have emerged as contenders to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Cut-price deal available?

Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen to sign two new midfielders this summer, with the 26-year-old having been identified as an ideal candidate at the Emirates Stadium.

The German international has now entered the final 18 months of his contract with Edin Terzic’s side so a cut-price deal could be available should he not put pen to paper on fresh terms.

The Gunners were previously linked with their target back in 2021, and despite a deal failing to materialise at the time, it appears that they are ready to take a second bite of the cherry.

The Latest: Arsenal contenders for Brandt

According to Bild (via Sport Witness), Arsenal are one of two potential suitors that are ‘hot’ in the race for Brandt.

The Premier League outfit are keen to ‘lure’ the Dortmund star to the capital, and it’s claimed that he would be ‘open’ to making the move there in the summer.

The Bremen native has already told his ‘close circle’ that a switch to the top-flight would ‘appeal’ to him.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Brandt has been described as a player that adds ‘danger’ to the midfield by journalist Josh Bunting so Arsenal should act fast to secure him ahead of their unnamed fellow competitors.

The Nike-sponsored ace has made 12 goal contributions in 23 Bundesliga outings this season where he’s averaging 2.3 key passes per 90 minutes.

BVB’s maestro would provide Arteta with great versatility having operated in four different positions this term, including out wide on both flanks alongside in the centre.

Brandt also shares the same agent as Reiss Nelson so this could potentially give Edu the advantage when trying to complete a deal ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Newcastle could ditch Wilson for Ivan Toney

One man who has been repeatedly linked with a return to Newcastle United since his exit back in 2018 is Brentford talisman, Ivan Toney, with the 26-year-old having blossomed into a fearsome and consistent attacking threat in his post-St James’ Park career.

Having been snapped up by the Magpies from Northampton Town at the age of 19 in the summer of 2015, the Englishman went on to make just four first-team appearances for the club over the next few years, with much of his time having been spent out on loan lower down the footballing pyramid.

The striker’s eventual permanent move to Peterborough United proved particularly fruitful as he bagged 49 goals in just 94 games across all fronts, having since netted 61 goals in only 110 games for the Bees – notably scoring 33 times to fire Thomas Frank’s side to promotion during the 2020/21 campaign.

Such prolific form has ensured that the “dangerous” marksman – as lauded by Chelsea boss Graham Potter – is beginning to attract interest from the Premier League’s elite clubs, with reports during the summer having linked the Tynesiders with a possible £30m approach for their former asset.

That was followed by further links at the tail-end of last year, despite Newcastle’s capture of fellow forward Alexander Isak, with it seemingly abundantly clear that he is a player on Eddie Howe’s radar.

Any hopes of re-signing the 6 foot 2 dynamo have now been boosted following claims made by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, with the respected journalist revealing in his CaughtOffside daily briefing that a possible exit from west London could be on the horizon:

“There will be a chance to leave for Ivan Toney in the summer but only if the right proposal will arrive, Brentford will not sell for a ‘normal” price.”

The addition of such a ruthless presence could well prove bad news for current leading man, Callum Wilson, with the injury-prone striker having not been able to match Toney’s rampant top-flight form of late.

While the latter man boasts a haul of 25 league goals since the start of the 2021/22 campaign, including 13 goals in just 19 games so far this season, the aforementioned Wilson has just 15 top-flight goals to his name in that time.

Although the former Bournemouth man did net an early strike in the draw with West Ham United at the weekend, that was the 30-year-old’s first league goal since returning from World Cup duty, with persistent absences having become a theme of his spell on Tyneside.

Despite being a “hugely important” part of Howe’s side – according to his manager – there are lingering doubts over whether he – nor Isak – can truly be relied upon to deliver the goods, with pundit Stan Collymore stating earlier this week:

‘They both have their own attributes to offer, but I’m just not sure either player is the type to wear the iconic number nine shirt and bag 20-plus goals a season.’

Turning to Toney – who is the third-highest scorer in the division this term – could potentially prove something of an upgrade, with the one-time Shrewsbury Town loanee also providing the benefit of his creativity when leading the line after producing eight big chances already this season, compared to just two for Wilson.

Equally, while the latter man ranks in just the bottom 23% for aerial duels won and the bottom 15% for interceptions made among his European peers, it would appear that Toney is far more of a physical focal point in attack, as he ranks in the top 15% and that top 8% for those same two metrics, respectively.

Although Wilson has been a reliable servant in recent years who can be truly lethal when fit and firing, the possible signing of his compatriot could well see him fall swiftly down the striking pecking order.

Southampton: Adams not ‘allowed to leave’

Southampton striker Che Adams won’t be ‘allowed to leave’ the St. Mary’s Stadium before the deadline on Tuesday night, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

The Lowdown: Everton’s interest

The Scottish international has now entered the final 18 months of his contract on the south coast, and having not yet put pen to paper on fresh terms, has been linked with an exit this month.

Premier League rivals Everton are the club to have recently been credited with an interest in the 26-year-old, with rumours suggesting that Nathan Jones’ side would sanction a sale should they find a suitable replacement, though it appears that is no longer the case.

The Latest: Crook’s update

Taking to Twitter, Crook revealed that Southampton aren’t in fact thinking about letting Adams go, with the player set to remain in red and white for the foreseeable future.

“Told there is no truth in claims Che Adams will be allowed to leave #SaintsFC this month. Not even under consideration.”

The Verdict: Correct decision

Adams was previously dubbed a ‘phenomenon’ by former Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, and making the decision to keep hold of him for at least the rest of the season is the right one.

The Leicester-born talent has posted ten goal contributions in 24 appearances across all competitions so far this campaign and makes a brilliant target man, averaging 2.5 aerial wins per league game.

Adams will have a significant role to play in trying to help his side escape relegation over the next few months, but should the club drop down to the second tier, they may have no choice but to cash in on some of their most prized assets later in the summer.

Crystal Palace join Antoine Semenyo race

Crystal Palace have joined the race to sign Bristol City forward Antoine Semenyo, according to Sky Sports.

The Lowdown: Previous speculation

The Eagles have seemingly had Semenyo on their radar for some time now, with speculation over a move emerging back in April 2021.

Reports back then suggested that Palace were leading the race for the player, but as we know, a Bristol City exit has failed to materialise.

Now 23 years of age, Semenyo contributed to 20 Championship goals last season and eight during the current campaign, and a move to Selhurst Park still seems to be a possibility.

The Latest: New claim

Sky Sports posted in their transfer blog on Wednesday morning, claiming that Palace and Southampton have joined Bournemouth and Burnley with interest in Semenyo.

They add that Bournemouth remain the favourites for the Ghana international, but Palace are keen on a potential move.

The Verdict: Smart move?

Dougie Freedman and Patrick Vieira could do with looking at adding to their attacking ranks in 2023, especially as Wilfried Zaha and Jordan Ayew are out of contract in the summer.

Semenyo, described as a ‘nightmare to play against’ by his manager Nigel Pearson, is primarily a centre-forward but can turn out on either wing and appears to be at the peak of his powers with a career-high Transfermarkt valuation.

You’d like to think he still has room to improve before hitting his prime, and with Palace enjoying success with taking young talent from the Championship in Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, Semenyo could be the next to make the step up to the Premier League with the club.

Chelsea dealt another James injury blow

Chelsea returned to winning ways in the Premier League during their first match following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, convincingly beating AFC Bournemouth 2-0, but an injury blow has marred the triumphant display…

What’s the word?

Sky Sports News relayed a statement from Chelsea regarding an injury setback for Reece James this week, with the full-back aggravating the knee issue that he sustained earlier this season against AC Milan in the Champions League, ruling him out of the World Cup.

The statement read:

“Defender Reece James underwent assessment earlier today after being substituted during the second half of last night’s 2-0 Premier League victory over AFC Bournemouth due to a knee injury.

“Scan results have regrettably confirmed a setback for the 23-year-old, with Reece now set to be ruled out for up to a month.”

James took to Twitter to brand 2022 as his “toughest year to date” continuing to state the impact it has had on him, saying it has “affected him mentally”.

The prominent right-back is set to miss up to six key matches, including two against Manchester City – one in the league and one in the FA Cup – and a pivotal away trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.

Potter will be “concerned”

Having been withdrawn from action at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening, Blues manager Graham Potter was evidently disconcerted by the latest setback, especially considering the issue seemed to lie in the same area as the previous injury.

Via CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs, he said: “It’s the same area so we’re concerned. We’ll have to see in the next 24-48 hours. It’s a bit too soon [to tell]. But it was in that action, a chop, he felt something. We have to keep our fingers crossed at the moment. He’s disappointed.”

With Chelsea currently languishing outside the top four, in eighth place and six points off Tottenham Hotspur in fourth, James’ return following the conclusion of the World Cup could not have come at a better time for his side.

The 23-year-old has scored 11 goals and assisted 20 more from 135 appearances since his breakthrough into the senior side, having risen through the Cobham academy; his emergence has – by design – coincided with a period of success for the club, with the 15-cap England ace winning the Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup at this early stage of this career.

In the Premier League this term, the Blues have won only one of the seven outings that James has missed out on, highlighting the irreplaceable presence and authority that he brings to Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, the £250k-per-week phenom has been of paramount importance to his outfit, marauding up and down the wing and blending his all-encompassing skills to form a refined, polished edge to his game.

Chelsea have options – the veteran Cesar Azpilicueta can still perform admirably wherever he is deployed, and the likes of Denzel Dumfries and Josip Juranovic are reported transfer targets for owner Todd Boehly, with intrigue perhaps advancing following the stricken James’ setback.

However, it will be strenuous to replace Chelsea’s “best player” – as remarked by journalist Jai McIntosh – and nursing him back to full, sustained fitness, is the best remedy to ail the club’s misfortunes.

Aston Villa interested in Cunha swoop

Aston Villa could look to the January transfer window to strengthen their squad ahead of the second half of the season, and a reliable source has revealed an update on the club’s pursuit of one potential target.

What’s the latest?

According to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor, Villa are interested in signing Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “In terms of clubs interested, I know Villa are looking, Leeds as well. Leeds actually looked at him before he went to Atletico Madrid.”

“But I do expect Wolves to be in the box seat for that one, but obviously there’s no agreement to date, which does leave the door open to someone else.”

It’d be a huge risk

Unai Emery is just getting settled in at Villa Park but will surely be keen to put his own mark on the squad when he is given the opportunity to acquire the services of new players in the January transfer window.

The Villans have had an inconsistent start to their Premier League season, but after the newly-appointed manager picked up victories in his first two top-flight outings at the helm, they have climbed into 12th ahead of the World Cup break.

Despite the positive start for Emery in the Midlands, the former Villarreal boss will be hoping that he can transform the performances displayed over the entire campaign so far and continue the exemplary form that his team started to pick up when they return to action against Liverpool on Boxing Day.

If it is true that Villa are interested in Cunha, it is clear that Emery is looking at bolstering his attacking threat over the second half of the season to ensure that his first six months at the club leads to a comfortable finish and potentially ending the season in the top half of the table.

However, the signing of the £42m-valued dynamo – who was hailed as “unpredictable” by his former coach Maurizio Jacobacci – could be a huge risk for Villa, as he has not been in prime goalscoring form during the season so far.

In 11 appearances for Atletico this term, Cunha has failed to find net, missed four big chances and is currently one of the lowest-ranked players in the squad (21st out of 23). He has averaged just 0.7 shots on target, 0.5 key passes and 0.5 successful dribbles per game, which shows that he has not been a threatening presence in front of goal.

In fact, the Brazilian centre-forward has only scored seven goals in total for his club in 54 appearances, with a goal contribution every 255 minutes.

With that in mind, signing Cunha could be a huge risk and a bad move for the powers at Villa Park, as they should be looking at more consistent and aggressive attacking players who can make an instant impact on the team.

Newcastle "following" Moises Caicedo

Newcastle United are believed to be keeping a close eye on Brighton and Hove Albion starlet, Moises Caicedo, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

What’s the word?

In his column for Caught Offside, the Italian transfer guru revealed that the 21-year-old is a player that the Magpies are tracking ahead of the January transfer window, albeit with no contact having yet taken place regarding a switch for the Ecuador international.

“On midfielders, they are following Moises Caicedo for sure but at the moment there are no negotiations at all with Newcastle. Many top clubs are following him closely,” Romano stated.

The Tynesiders were previously named as one of the potential suitors for the midfielder back in October should the Seagulls look to cash in, albeit with any move for the former Independiente del Valle man seemingly set to cost in the region of £60m-70m, according to recent reports.

Howe’s own Gerrard

The promising talent been a real standout figure at the Amex since his return from a loan stint in Belgium at the start of the year, with the youngster having initially arrived on the south coast for a bargain fee of just £4.5m back in February 2021.

The current campaign has proven particularly fruitful for the highly-rated “jewel” – as described by Ecuadorian historian Enrico Castro-Montes – as he currently ranks sixth in the division for tackles made (43), having started all 14 games for Roberto De Zerbi’s side so far this season.

The 28-cap gem also notably impressed for his country at the World Cup in recent weeks, having featured in all three groups for the South American nation in Qatar, scoring once in the eventual defeat to Senegal, while also further showcasing his ball-winning prowess by averaging two tackles per game.

Such is Caicedo’s undoubted quality he has even previously been likened to Premier League legend Steven Gerrard in the past by talent scout Jacek Kulig, who categorised the young playmaker as a “box-to-box” midfielder.

That comparison is also no doubt warranted by the Brighton man’s keen eye for a goal, having notably netted a spectacular long-range effort in the win over Manchester United at the tail-end of last season.

Such a moment of magic was also seemingly Gerrard’s trademark – be it the Englishman’s piledriver against Olympiakos or his outrageous FA Cup final strike against West Ham United – during what was a lengthy career at the elite level for both club and country, having scored 186 goals and registered 153 assists in 710 games for the Anfield outfit.

The now-retired maestro – who also scored 21 goals in 113 games at international level – is rightly regarded as one of the finest of his generation in his position, having notably been dubbed “the best midfielder the Premier League has ever seen”, according to pundit Jamie O’Hara.

To be compared to such a talent is high praise indeed as far as Caicedo is concerned, with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe likely to relish having a Gerrard-esque figure in his midfield ranks.

Spurs: Paratici leads race for Malinovskyi

Tottenham Hotspur are in pole position to bring Ruslan Malinovskyi to the Premier League in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian media outlet Sport Mediaset (via Sport Witness), who claim that Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are now in ‘pole position’ to land the Atalanta BC attacking midfielder in an €18m (£15.5m) deal this winter.

A further report by Calciomercato also claim that, after making exploratory contact for the 29-year-old in the summer transfer window, the Premier League side have a ‘more concrete’ chance of landing the Ukraine international in January.

Finally, Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) reported on Monday that ‘talks are expected’ between Tottenham and Atalanta in the near future, before the Italian publication claimed that ‘more will be known in the coming weeks’.

Dream Conte signing

Considering just how much Malinovskyi offers in an attacking capacity from the middle of the park, the argument that the 29-year-old would make a dream addition to Conte’s current midfield options at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is an extremely easy one to make.

Indeed, while it is true that Rodrigo Bentancur has started chipping in with goals in recent weeks, in total, the Uruguayan, Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg, Yves Bissouma and Oliver Skipp have scored just seven goals and registered a further four assists over their combined 48 Premier League appearances so far this season.

In comparison, over Malinovskyi’s 30 Serie A fixtures last time out, the £17.5m-rated talent bagged six goals, provided four assists and created 13 big chances for his teammates on his own, in addition to taking an average of 1.9 shots, making 1.5 key passes and completing 1.6 dribbles per game.

These returns saw the player who Carlo Garganese dubbed “unreal” average a simply sensational SofaScore match rating of 7.22, not only ranking him as Atalanta’s second-best performer in the league but also as the joint 18th-best player in the top flight of Italian football as a whole.

Furthermore, with the £22k-per-week attacking midfielder also able to operate on the left wing and as a left or right wing-back, Malinovskyi could easily fit into either of Conte’s 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 tactical set-ups in north London.

As such, it is clear to see that the Ukrainian sensation would make an unreal addition to the 53-year-old manager’s side in January, leading us to believe the news that Paratici is in pole position to seal a move for the 29-year-old is undoubtedly fantastic news for everyone involved with the Premier League side.

Wolves handed potential manager boost

Wolves have been handed a boost in their hopes of appointing a new permanent manager as a big update has emerged regarding Vitor Pereira.

The Lowdown: A move on the cards?

The Old Gold have been without a permanent manager in the dugout since the decision was made to sack Bruno Lage earlier this month.

Since then, the Midlands club have won one and lost three of the four league games that Steve Davis has had in interim charge, leading to reports that the club could go back on their decision to stick with Davis.

Now, they may have a potential breakthrough on their hands over the possibility of seeing Pereira become their new head coach.

The Latest

According to journalist Jorge Nicola (via Sport Witness), a behind-the-scenes update has emerged regarding Pereira’s current position in charge of Corinthians, with Wolves name-checked in the report.

It was reported earlier this week that Molineux could be a potential next destination for the 54-year-old.

Nicola said: “An important source of mine at Corinthians assured me that Vitor Pereira has already informed the president, Duilio Monteiro Alves, the football coordinator, Alessandro Nunes, and director of football, Roberto de Andrade, that he is not staying for the next season. He has a number of reasons that justify his decision.”

The Brazilian season ends before the World Cup.

The Verdict

Having managed several clubs across a wide variety of countries, the Portuguese manager took charge of Corinthians back in February.

With 58 matches under his belt at the Brazilian club, Pereira, known for an attack-minded set-up loosely translating to a 4-3-3, has seen his side win 26 of them, drawing 15 and losing 17 along the way.

Moving forward, if the Wolves hierarchy feel that Pereira is the right candidate to take over from Davis, then his decision to part ways with the Brazilian club could be the first major step in making it happen.
