Ricardo Pepi is set to earn his first start of the UEFA Champions League season on Wednesday, manager Peter Bosz has confirmed. The U.S. international has made six appearances off the bench, including scoring one late winner in a victory over Shakhtar Donetsk

“Ricardo Pepi is in the starting lineup tomorrow," Bosz said Tuesday at his prematch news conference.

The Dutch side takes on league leaders Liverpool as they look to clinch a berth in the knockout round.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pepi appeared at the prematch press conference with Bosz, claiming he is excited for the opportunity ahead of him.

"Of course it's a wonderful game to play, but whatever my role is, I will always be there," Pepi said. "I'm ready for the chances I get and it's up to me to take them."

PSV enters the match sitting 19th in the Champions League standings with 11 points through seven games. Pepi will of course feature, but USMNT teammates Malik Tillman and Sergino Dest are injured, and will not play as a result.

U.S. international Richard Ledezma, meanwhile, is likely to make a cameo after a burst into the XI in recent weeks under Bosz. Ledezma last appeared for the USMNT in 2021.

Pepi added that although minutes have not come easy this season, he has held his head high and is ready to play once called upon.

"Of course it's difficult sometimes," the striker added. "But it's up to me to stay professional. I'm lucky I have a controlled character, which helps in my situation."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Pepi has scored 11 goals and recorded two assists for PSV in the Eredivisie this season, recording just five starts in 18 appearances.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PSV?

PSV clash with Liverpool Wednesday afternoon with kickoff slated for 3 p.m. ET. A win or a draw sees the Dutch side through to the knockouts, while a loss could see them slip through the cracks of the competition — though, it remains unlikely.

As well as Guido: Lopetegui must swiftly axe "overrated" 4/10 West Ham man

Julen Lopetegui has now started his tenure as West Ham United’s head coach with three successive home defeats in the Premier League. Chelsea were too slick, too potent, and put three past the Irons with a breeze.

There is much to do. Nicolas Jackson ran riot against the hosts’ beleaguered backline and Lopetegui must now rally his troops for the week ahead – West Ham travel to Anfield for the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before taking on Brentford in west London next weekend.

It’s hard to find flashes of optimism from such a lifeless performance. The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas said that it was a display from a team with “no identity” that “keeps conceding silly goals”.

There were a host of poor performances, but the man who was withdrawn a little over half an hour is probably the pick of the rotten bunch.

Guido Rodriguez's performance vs Chelsea

West Ham signed Guido Rodriguez on a free transfer this summer after the expiry of his contract with Real Betis in Spain. The 30-year-old has looked sufficient throughout his opening matches on English soil but was torn to shreds in east London this afternoon.

Guido Rodriguez

GIVEMESPORT branded the Argentine with a woeful 2/10 match rating, writing: ‘Couldn’t live with the Chelsea midfield in the opening half an hour as the game ran away from the Hammers. Was pulled off in the 38th minute by Lopetegui for a more dominant and physical player in Soucek.’

Rodriguez’s discernible lack of pace and mobility was exploited by Enzo Maresca’s men, whose ball-playing system and fast, multi-functional attacking outlets managed to overpower the midfielder and his Iron confreres.

He wasn’t the only one to struggle against the Blues tide, however, with Edson Alvarez possibly enduring an even more wretched affair. The Mexico international lasted beyond the interval, but not much longer…

Edson Alvarez's performance vs Chelsea

Alvarez sat deeper than usual against Chelsea, playing just in front of the backline and doing so with a whimper. He was withdrawn for the more enterprising Carlos Soler after just 54 minutes.

GIVEMESPORT were more generous in their rating of the 26-year-old, handing him a 4/10 and commenting: ‘Had a nightmare start to the game alongside Rodriguez as the hosts’ midfield was torn apart at will. Put in a slightly more solid and assured performance in the second period, but the damage had already been done.’

As you can see, neither imposed themselves on the affair nor did they showcase the kind of robust athleticism that Lopetegui’s team needs to operate effectively.

Journalist Jacob Steinberg even said that Alvarez is “overrated”, noting that he is apt for a booking and caught out of possession with alarming regularity.

Let’s be candid. Lopetegui has his work cut out. West Ham spent in excess of £120m throughout the summer and the Spaniard inherited a team as talented as any at the club over the past few decades.

These players have not staked their case for a starting berth in the fixture ahead against Liverpool. With Lucas Paqueta, Soler, Tomas Soucek and Andy Irving all capable in deep-sitting midfield roles, it’s time for a change.

In United's 2-0 loss at home to Newcastle last month, forward Zirkzee was subbed off just after the half-hour mark. Some Red Devils fans at Old Trafford booed the Dutchman as he went down the tunnel, but after United's 2-2 draw at Liverpool on Sunday, captain Fernandes has come to the aid of the £36 million (€42.5m/$46m) summer signing.

    WHAT BRUNO FERNANDES SAID

He told talkSPORT: "I was in the stands and have never seen something like this and it really frustrates me and annoys me because he is a player that always gives his all. As a player that is coming into the team from a different league he needs time to adapt but he has huge qualities. He hasn't shown all the quality but it can't be that from the first game of the season everyone was hyping him as one of the best strikers and now everyone doesn't believe in him anymore. We do believe in him inside the dressing room. I would rather be myself in this position against Newcastle and not seeing one of my team-mates in that position."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Although Fernandes' backing will have been welcomed by Zirkzee, the 23-year-old has failed to fire so far for United. A return of four goals and two assists in 28 appearances makes for grim reading. But perhaps the ex-Bologna man, who has been linked with a Juventus move, needs time to find his form at United.

Ben Slater celebrated back to back centuries before Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire collapsed spectacularly as 18 wickets fell on the opening day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match at Derby. The former Derbyshire opener scored 107 off 191 balls, sharing a third wicket stand of 163 in 39 overs with Joe Clarke who made 66 from 95 balls. But the innings imploded with eight wickets falling for 62 runs as Fynn Hudson-Prentice claimed career-best figures of 4 for 36 and Ben Aitchison took 3 for 27 to bowl Notts out for 256.Related

Stuart Broad responded by taking 2 for 22 before Luke Fletcher, with 3 for 23 and Dane Paterson, 2 for 28, left Derbyshire reeling on 86 for 8 at the close.Haseeb Hameed scored two centuries in the previous game but was out to the second ball he faced, edging Luis Reece to first slip. When Hudson-Prentice found lift to have Ben Duckett caught at second, Derbyshire’s decision to put Notts in looked good but they squandered the initiative by bowling short and wide.Slater and Clarke took full advantage, the latter passing 5000 first-class runs while his partner more than made up for his pair against Derbyshire last season while on loan with Leicestershire.Clarke pulled Reece for six and repeated the stroke against Sam Conners on his way to a 69 ball fifty, his second of the season. Slater reached his hundred from 160 balls by clipping Aitchison through midwicket but Clarke’s dismissal, fencing at Aitchison, plunged the innings into decline.Hudson-Prentice was rewarded for bowling full when he trapped Lyndon James and Steven Mullaney lbw and when Slater was caught in front pushing half forward at Matt Critchley to the second ball after tea, Notts had slumped to 205 for 6. Tom Moores and Liam Patterson-White counter-attacked briefly but the innings folded quickly after Moores miscued trying to pull Reece. After the last three wickets fell for two runs, Broad had Reece caught behind before Tom Wood failed to beat Luke Fletcher’s throw from midwicket.Broad removed Wayne Madsen with late inswing, Leus du Plooy was lbw shuffling across to Paterson and Fletcher trapped Harvey Hosein on the crease before Critchley edged Paterson behind.Fletcher then sent back George Scrimshaw and Hudson-Prentice to complete a day that promised a batting bonanza but ended in bowling carnage.

'It was a bit of a shock to me' – England legend Ian Wright digs out Harry Kane for comments about players withdrawing from international duty ahead of 3-0 Nations League win over Greece

England legend Ian Wright slammed Harry Kane for taking aim at his Three Lions colleagues who withdrew from international duty for the Nations League.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Without the service of key players, Lee Carsley led England to a decisive 3-0 victory over Greece in Athens, demonstrating the depth and resilience of the team as goals from Ollie Watkins, Curtis Jones and an own goal by Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos paved the way for a comfortable victory. However, controversy brewed before kick-off as Aaron Ramsdale, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Levi Colwill, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Jarrad Branthwaite, Jack Grealish, and Phil Foden chose to stay back on English shores due to injuries and knocks.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane was sharp in his criticism ahead of England’s match against Greece as he suggested that certain players prioritised their clubs over national duty sparking debate on loyalty and commitment, especially among squad mainstays who have consistently shown up for the Three Lions in past tournaments. However, Wright found the comments surprising and was taken aback, particularly since they were directed at players with whom Kane has fought many international battles.

  • WHAT WRIGHT SAID

Ahead of kick-off, Wright said: "What I would say in respect to the players that have pulled out, you would like to have seen them there. But we are talking about a period of time where the players have seen that the FA have chosen not to have the manager for this game.

"What kind of message are you sending to the players? I’m not going to blame the players or question the integrity of the players in respect of them joining up, but if they have got the knocks and they feel like they’re going to sit out this one, then the opportunity should be for those coming in. The big issue is the scheduling, that’s what it comes down to. The managers are talking about it, the players are talking about it, people are getting injured and they are glossing over that."

  • AND WHAT'S MORE

Wright pointed out that the Football Association (FA) itself has added to the confusion, especially by delaying the arrival of Thomas Tuchel to 2025.

"I was very surprised if I am totally honest as you are talking about somebody who has been in the trenches with those guys," Wright said.

"Every single England call-up is important, every single one is an opportunity and it just felt like we are talking about the captain of a bunch of players who have said that Gareth [Southgate] has brought them together and everything is so strong – to go from all that unity in the squad to then a few withdrawals and then you’re hearing the lack of commitment.

"Again, I have to go back to the FA. The FA have chosen not to have their [new] manager here. They’ve kind of set a precedent for it, but for Harry to say that about the players he’s been in the trenches with, two finals, semi-finals of the World Cup. Knowing the calibre of the players, to then say he is disappointed to see them not coming, especially with the fixtures and how the game is going crazy, it was a bit of a shock to me."

Carlo Ancelotti's side are in the spotlight after hitting a slump in form. Los Blancos were hammered 4-0 by Barcelona in El Clasico and followed that up with a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, with their La Liga clash with Valencia postponed in between. The Italian is now under pressure to reverse his team's fortunes but has been hit with a further blow as Tchouameni has been sidelined with an ankle injury after being forced off at half-time of the defeat to Milan.

A club statement read: "After the tests carried out today on our player Aurelien Tchouameni by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a sprained left ankle. Evolution pending."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tchouameni has been criticised this season but his absence will be an issue as the French star is a versatile player who has featured both in defence and midfield for Madrid. He now joins Thibaut Courtois, David Alaba, Dani Carvajal and Rodrygo on the club's injury list, leaving Ancelotti short of options at the back. Real Madrid also have problems in attack where summer signing Kylian Mbappe is yet to show his very best form at the Santiago Bernabeu and Jude Bellingham has not scored all season. Meanwhile, Fede Valverde's wife slammed Ancelotti in a hastily-deleted social media post that read "when will they f*cking understand for once and for all that Fede is not a winger?”

Real Madrid have lost consecutive home games while conceding at least three goals in each for the first time in all competitions since May 2009 under Juande Ramos.

Sunderland losing £3m star would be as big a blow as Clarke leaving

Sunderland fans would have hoped that there would be a bit more optimism in the air around the Stadium of Light ahead of the 2024/25 campaign kicking off, but the mood still feels sour.

The Black Cats remain without a manager, as the saga to find Michael Beale's permanent successor continues to irritate those situated in Wearside, whilst there's plenty of talk surrounding a number of Sunderland's top gems packing their bags for pastures new this summer.

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

Jack Clarke's name is always being floated about as a potential outgoing, after bagging 15 goals last season to be a ray of sunshine to cut through the doom and gloom, whilst Dan Neil's contract situation could soon raise the anxiety levels, with the homegrown product reportedly hesitant to commit to Sunderland owing to the precarious manager situation.

Chris Rigg is another face that the powers that be at Sunderland will be desperate to hold onto past this transfer window, with new reports suggesting he's in the same camp as Neil when it comes to securing his immediate Black Cats future.

The latest on Chris Rigg's future at Sunderland

According to Sunderland Echo journalist James Copley, there's a deal in principle agreed between the Championship side and Rigg for the now 17-year-old to sign a professional deal at the Stadium of Light.

But, with notable interest from elsewhere for the teenage sensation potentially tempting, and no new boss occupying the Black Cats dug-out just yet, Rigg hasn't yet penned the deal put forward to him.

Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.

Sunderland will aim to tie down their highly-rated starlet soon, to avoid an uncertain Neil-type scenario, knowing that the wide-eyed midfielder could be a huge part of the Wearside outfit heading into the future.

Arguably, keeping a firm grip on Rigg could be as crucial as Clarke sticking it out in Sunderland quarters for the next campaign, with what the teenager could offer over many years to come, before potentially then being sold on for far more than the reported £3m price-tag that had previously been placed above his head.

Rigg's importance to Sunderland

Given plenty of first-team experience by interim boss Mike Dodds last campaign, with Rigg amassing 21 second-tier games, the youngster never looked too out of his comfort zone, as the nimble number 31 held his own.

Rigg would end up helping himself to two strikes from those Championship clashes, as the Academy wonderkid featured, in some capacity, in the last 13 matches of the otherwise disappointing season for his team.

Sourced by Transfermarkt

Already immortalised into the Sunderland hall-of-fame, as can be seen looking at the table above, it would feel like a kick in the teeth for the Black Cats if Rigg was moved on already, with a major move up to the Premier League perhaps a premature switch for a starlet who is still inexperienced at a senior level, having only made 25 professional appearances for his current employers to date.

Whereas, there would be obvious anger if Clarke was moved on in the short-term, but there would be no qualms if the electric winger wanted a higher-up move, having been a loyal servant to Sunderland for many years now, accumulating 122 games in the process.

Whereas, Rigg – who was described as being a "warrior" by ex-Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray – has only just started his journey, and could be a huge sale down the line, after further endearing himself to his loyal set of supporters. Thus, losing him now would not be ideal in the slightest – he could just become one of the best to emerge out of the academy in quite some time.

Dan Neil isn't the only 'outstanding' Sunderland star who could leave

Sunderland will be keen to keep this star around at the club even if Dan Neil moves on.
