Levy has already made Tottenham move for club’s "vital" £34 million star

Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy are said to have already moved for one club's "vital" £34 million player, and it is believed they have a financial advantage over numerous other sides in the race for his signature.

Spurs targeting new centre-back for Postecoglou this summer

Despite already boasting three star senior central defenders in the form of Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Radu Dragusin, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is after a fourth as he plots to overhaul the current squad.

Postecoglou has strongly hinted that Spurs are set for a real makeover when the transfer window reopens on June 14, with the Australian set to reinforce the heart of his backline further. He green-lit a £25 million deal for Dragusin just four months ago, but has publicly stated since then that Tottenham will be in the market for another centre-back.

“If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at”, said Postecoglou on signing another centre-back at Spurs.

“With all these things, it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here.

“I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen, but I think we’ll look to strengthen all areas of the park come the end of the season. That is planning that’s already underway, and other people are in charge of it at the moment.”

Tottenham have been linked with Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo, and more marquee options like Everton starlet Jarrad Branthwaite, to bolster their defence. However, a fruitful pool of talent for the club is over in Italy, where Fabio Paratici's network of contacts has come in handy over the last few years.

Spurs are rumoured to be in the chase for Bologna star Riccardo Calafiori, who has really impressed under Thiago Motta in Serie A and could come at a fairly affordable price. Elsewhere in the division, another attractive Italian centre-half may well be Torino's Alessandro Buongiorno.

Tottenham move already made for Buongiorno amid financial advantage

According to newspaper Tuttosport, Tottenham have "already moved" for Buongiorno pre-summer. While it isn't specified what Tutto mean by this, it presumably suggests some sort of approach or contact has been made to find out the costs of a potential deal.

Alessandro Buongiorno

It's also stated that Spurs' "spending power" will be key, and could hand them a financial advantage over the 24-year-old's plethora of other suitors abroad. Inter Milan, Napoli, Juventus and AC Milan are all interested in the centre-back, but they could have more trouble meeting his £34 million asking price.

Other reports have described Buongiorno as "vital" to the Torino cause, and his numbers suggest that he'd be worth a valuation of that amount.

Let's dive into INDIVISA's weekly NWSL power rankings.

Utah Royals have now lost three-straight games, moving them to the last spot in the power rankings. Utah struggled to breakdown Gotham FC, and really only had a few chances on goal to Gotham's 10 shots on frame.

The Royals have a lot of work to do to climb up the league standings, as they currently sit in last place with an overall record of 4-14-3.

Houston Dash are moving up. This past weekend the Dash picked up three points for the first time in months, securing a 1-0 win over Seattle Reign FC.

We can't mention the Dash's performance without including Yuki Nagasato's volley from the top of the box, which will surely be in highlight video across the NWSL for months.

Imagn12San Diego Wave ↔️

The San Diego Wave really tried to ride their wave from the week before, but fell to Chicago in a closely contested match up.

The Wave dominated in chances on goal, 28 shots to Chicago's nine. The Wave also dominated the game's possession, however the early goal conceded was the difference maker.

The Wave will now gear up to face the Thorns on Saturday.

Regional red-ball competition in prospect as counties vote on season formats

Some splits over 50-over competition remain but ECB ask for simple majority in secret ballot

George Dobell06-Jul-2020The outline for the county season will be decided on Tuesday following a vote by the chairs of the first-class counties. With all clubs agreed that the T20 Blast should feature, the choice facing the counties is whether to start the season with a first-class or List A competition. As things stand, it seems the first-class competition will narrowly win the vote. That will mean the counties splitting into three regional groups of six and playing five games. The top two would qualify for a Lord’s final to be played over five days. The competition will not be referred to as the County Championship and will have no bearing on promotion and relegation. It is a secret ballot, however, and not every club has been prepared to confirm which way they intend to vote. Those favouring the List A competition argue that it would be cheaper and safer to run as it minimises the necessity for hotel stays. At least one club reports concerns expressed by players – particularly those with pregnant partners or young families – about staying in hotels. The PCA have previously stated that players will be required to opt-in to be considered for selection but, with more than 130 players out of contract at the end of the season, some are understandably anxious not to put themselves at a disadvantageAnother club argues that players coming off furlough will require more time to prepare to regain the level of fitness required for first-class cricket. As a consequence, that club says it favours the List A option.Under normal circumstances, such votes have to be decided with a two-thirds majority. On this occasion, however, the ECB have asked the counties to agree to a simple majority. Even that has not been accepted by all the counties with some red-ball proponents adamant that, even if they lose the vote, they will arrange first-class friendlies against like-minded teams.Counties remain confident they will be able to welcome some spectators back into their grounds at some stage during what remains of the season. With pubs and restaurants now reopened, the counties hope that pushing the T20 Blast into September, when the bulk of its matches will be played, gives them the best chance to recoup some revenue from the season in ticket sales.Counties thought to favour a first-class competition:
Nottinghamshire, Lancashire, Derbyshire, Sussex, Yorkshire, Middlesex, Surrey, Somerset, Warwickshire, Kent, Durham and Worcestershire.Counties thought to favour a 50-over competition:
Essex, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Leicestershire, Glamorgan, Northants.

PCA stall on ECB's request for players' 20% pay cut

England’s centrally contracted players appear – at this stage – to have declined the offer to accept a temporary pay cut as part of the sport’s efforts to combat the challenges set by the COVID-19 pandemic.Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, wrote to Tony Irish, his counterpart at the Professional Cricketers’ Association (the PCA; the players’ union who negotiate pay on behalf of centrally contracted players), on March 29 to broach the subject. ESPNcricinfo has a copy of this letter. In the letter, Harrison revealed that he personally would be taking a 25% pay cut “for at least three months” as the ECB “confronted… the biggest challenge the sport has known in the modern era.” It is understood that other ECB executives have volunteered a 20% pay cut and some staff will be informed on Wednesday morning of a decision to furlough them.It is unclear how much direct input the players had on the decision, although writing on Twitter, Ben Stokes responded with fury at the suggestion that England’s centrally contracted players had personally turned down the request. While there were some exchanges between the PCA and the players on WhatsApp groups, the PCA stance has remained that pay cuts should only be seen as a last resort. Jos Buttler, meanwhile, is auctioning off the shirt he wore when England clinched the World Cup to raise money for a health service charity.ALSO READ: Losing whole summer would cost over £300m – ECB chief executiveWhile the ECB understood they could not compel the players to accept a pay cut, they had hoped they might volunteer one as a “gesture” in an unprecedented crisis. But, after receiving a less than enthusiastic response to the idea, in a media conference on March 31, Harrison said the ECB “are not seeking pay cuts from England players”.”In these circumstances,” Harrison wrote, “it is my strong belief that a leadership example must be set.”These measures will be far more effective with the support of our professional players and we seek your help and understanding in this. We are rightly proud of the role our England players play in wider society and how they are helping people through these difficult days and across the country we recognise the valuable role that professional cricketers play in support of the cricket family. In unprecedented times like these, it is important for the whole cricket family to show a willingness to be part of the solution.ECB chief executive Tom Harrison sent a letter to PCA CEO Tony Irish last week•Getty Images

“Whilst the health of the nation is under threat, the future of our sport depends on every single one of us sharing the load right now. In light of this, I am encouraging the PCA and all professional players to support the recommendations the first-class counties present to you next week, which may very well propose a 20% reduction in salaries for April and May, with a view to revisiting this on a monthly basis until we have navigated through the crisis.”I am hopeful that our players are able to contribute in rising to this unprecedented challenge. If we can all pull our weight in working together and come through this, then we will not only reinforce the truly inspiring spirit of the cricket family, but we will safeguard the future of our sport and the livelihoods of everyone who works within it.”An excerpt from Tom Harrison’s letter to Tony Irish•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

ESPNcricinfo understands that the PCA is yet to receive a proposal from the first-class counties, and will wait for that to arrive before considering it. Irish’s most recent public comments stressed the need for collective solutions. Many county players have now beenfurloughed. While some counties are making-up the full difference between the government contribution and their full salaries, some arenot. There is an additional element of negotiation for centrally contracted players due to the Team England Player Partnership (TEPP), which effectively decides the value of central contracts for international players. Irish is also chair of TEPP.It remains possible that the PCA stance will change but it does seem they have not taken the first opportunity to act in this unprecedented situation.

'Very lucky chap' – Gary Lineker told £1.3m BBC salary 'can't be justified' as his Match of the Day predecessor suggests England legend is 'not everyone's cup of tea'

Ex-Match of the Day host Des Lynam has suggested that the BBC "cannot justify" Gary Lineker's lucrative salary.

Lineker wage assessed by former BBC hostEngland icon currently highest-paid presenterOnly presenter to earn more than £1m annuallyWHAT HAPPENED?

The ex-Tottenham, England and Barcelona striker has been the highest-paid presenter at BBC over the past seven years drawing an annual salary of £1.35 million – as per . Now Lineker's predecessor and former Match of the Day host Lynam has weighed in on the legendary forward's wages and revealed why the company might find it difficult to justify such a high salary.

AdvertisementWHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Speaking to the , Lynam said: "I don’t suppose you can justify it in terms of what a nurse or firemen does, but it’s the market – that’s what the BBC feel they have to pay to get his services. You can’t say that anybody saying a few words on a television screen is worth more than someone who saves lives, but money dictates. He’s a very lucky chap."

The ex-presenter added: "He wasn’t comfortable [as a pundit] at the beginning. He’s been highly critical of the England team in the Euros, but when he first came on he wouldn’t criticise anybody. He’s not everyone’s cup of tea but for my money, I think he does a first-class job."

Lineker drew the ire of his fellow BBC colleagues for his fierce criticism of Gareth Southgate and his Three Lions during the Euros. The staff were reportedly left "uncomfortable and embarrassed" by the furore sparked by the presenter. Several staff members had also complained as they were unhappy that the 63-year-old does not have to comply with their impartiality guidelines.

Ange could bench Johnson for "special" Spurs star

At this stage, it's uncertain if fifth place in the Premier League will secure Champions League football next season, and while Tottenham Hotspur have a nine-point buffer over sixth-place Manchester United, jumping over Aston Villa will put any doubts to bed.

Ange Postecoglou has been vocal in his opinion that securing a place in Europe's top tournament is not the be-all and end-all, and while his words certainly ring true, supporters will yearn for a place in the Champions League to progress and compete against the best around.

After his fashion, Postecoglou will too. And in order to achieve this Spurs simply must defeat Nottingham Forest in north London this evening, having dropped points at West Ham United on Tuesday evening.

While he's a man bang in form, the Lilywhites manager might opt to move Brennan Johnson back to the bench; the Wales international has been a fitness concern after limping off at the London Stadium.

Why Brennan Johnson should be benched

Signed from today's opposition for £47.5m on transfer deadline day last summer, Johnson has been excellent for Tottenham and at just 22 years old, there is an exciting amount of room for growth.

He's been in a particularly brilliant showing recently but sustained a knock after opening the scoring against West Ham, and while he has been cleared, Postecoglou might be wary of aggravating the issue.

Clearly, he's quite effective off the bench, and could make all the difference against his former outfit should the going get tough in the early stages – it certainly wouldn't be the biggest surprise.

Why take the risk after he felt discomfort last time out, especially with Dejan Kulusevski desperate to rekindle his finest form?

Why Dejan Kulusevski must be unleashed vs Forest

With Richarlison ruled out after tweaking his knee, Heung-min Son will serve as the focal frontman once again, meaning Timo Werner should retain his starting spot on the left flank.

Given that Johnson might not be handed a role from the outset, Kulusevski would be the obvious choice on the James Maddison's right after being benched in midweek,

Tottenham ace Dejan Kulusevski.

As per Sofascore, the Sweden international has scored six goals and supplied three assists from 28 Premier League matches this season, creating 12 big chances, completing 80% of his passes and averaging 2.0 key passes, 1.8 tackles and 4.1 ball recoveries per game.

Moreover, the 6 foot 1 star ranks among the top 13% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles and the top 20% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref, underscoring his prowess as a multi-functioning attacking player.

The 23-year-old has only posted a goal and assist apiece across his last 11 outings in the top-flight and this is a concern, but he's a veritable workhorse and will be determined to recover his form and enter a purple patch to close out the campaign.

Dejan Kulusevski for Tottenham.

Described as a "special, special player" by Sky Sports' Jamie Weir, he must be unleashed from the outset against Forest, bringing energy and dynamism to ensure his side hit the ground running.

The Brazil international goalkeeper is seeing serious questions asked of his future at the Etihad Stadium. He has spent seven years in England, winning 17 trophies, but is now being linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League – with Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad both credited with interest.

    WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

City boss Pep Guardiola has done little to quash the speculation, saying when quizzed on Ederson’s future: “I don’t know. He has to see maybe other options. Of course, I would like him to stay but it depends now on the clubs. I don’t really know the situation because there are no contacts in the last days and it’s a question of training and being with us until the transfer window is going to finish. We will see what is going to happen with him.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

City are demanding around £50 million ($64m) from any sale. Ederson would prefer to remain in Europe, but is aware that teams from the Middle East will find it easier to find the funds required to do a deal – while also putting a lucrative contract in place.

    DID YOU KNOW?

The 30-year-old shot-stopper is, according to , looking for a way out of City. Part of the reason for that is the praise that rained down on keeping rival Ortega following a clash with Tottenham in May that saw the German produce a title-defining save from Spurs captain Heung-min Son.

Club preparing to lose £100m defender as Tottenham push for his signing

A club are preparing to lose one of their star players this summer, as Tottenham allegedly push to sign him for manager Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs compiling summer transfer shortlist

Ever since the January window's end, reports have suggested that Spurs are already in full preparation for the summer.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 6, 2024

Reliable media sources claim that Postecoglou's side are keen to sign a winger as their "major" summer capture (Miguel Delaney), while others believe that a new striker to replace Harry Kane could be in the offing as well.

It appears the wider recruitment team, lead by technical director Johan Lange and chief football officer Scott Munn, are working on the possibility of bringing in fresh attacking options after a positive debut season for Postecoglou as head coach.

However, there are also suggestions that Spurs could look to bring in another centre-back this summer. Indeed, the north Londoners are apparently keen to reinforce their back line further after the signing of Radu Dragusin from Genoa in January.

They apparently intend to sign two "top-level" centre-backs this year, and with Dragusin out the way, they want to bring in another.

"The situation hasn't changed, and Tottenham have always intended to sign two top-level centre-backs across 2024," said journalist Dean Jones to GiveMeSport last month.

"They’ve got one through the door, and now, in the summer window, the plan is to go after another. Calafiori and Morato might be mentioned now, but the net is being cast wider than that. They’ve got some interesting options opening up to them. Still, from what I understand, they’re not committing at this stage, even though they want to make early moves in the summer transfer window similar to how they did in the winter market.”

There have been a fair few defensive aces linked in this regard, and one who keeps on being mentioned is Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite.

The Englishman is a fixture in Sean Dyche's elevens, week in and week out – playing a key role for Everton in their battle to avoid relegation.

He's started 24 Premier League matches as a mainstay for the Toffees since returning from a productive loan spell at PSV Eindhoven last year, and this has enticed interest from Spurs. The Daily Mail recently claimed that Tottenham are pushing hard to sign Branthwaite, and making a "concerted effort" ahead of the summer.

Everton "preparing to lose" Branthwaite

Sharing an update, The Mirror have a small line claiming Everton are "preparing to lose" Branthwaite this summer amid interest from Spurs and Man United.

They're even eyeing a potential replacement for the star who Jamie Carragher called "special", with Hull City ace Jacob Greaves on their radar. However, according to inews, the Lilywhites may have to pay a pretty penny for Branthwaite – who the Merseysiders value at around £100 million.

Mark Goldbridge: Net worth, salary, real name, partner & Man Utd support

Modern football is consumed in a completely different way than it used to be, with social media allowing supporters to find a voice and share their opinions around the globe.

YouTubers and podcasters now play a prominent role in football for many fans, becoming household names around the world, offering their views on the game and often proving divisive. Arsenal Fan TV is perhaps the prime example, with the famous Arsenal fan site often as popular with opposition supporters as Gunners fans, depending on the result.

Then there's Mark Goldbridge, covering all things Manchester United and the Premier League – but who is exactly is The United Stand presenter?

Mark Goldbridge and Man Utd

Goldbridge has arguably become one of the most recognisable and successful YouTubers around when it comes to football coverage, offering regular thoughts on his beloved United.

His watchalongs during Red Devils matches have provided so much entertainment down the years, with his Alan Partridge-esque mannerisms and hilarious reactions to United conceding goals often having the potential to go viral.

Intriguingly, there are persistent claims that Goldbridge is actually not a United fan at all, with Nottingham Forest rumoured to be his team of choice growing up. He actually began supporting United through his Grandad on his mother's side after his parents split up, explaining the confusion in an interview with FourFourTwo.

Mark Goldbridge real name Brent Di Cesare

Perhaps the one thing that many don't know about Mark Goldbridge is that it isn't his real name, with the United supporter actually called Brent Di Cesare. A quick search on Companies House proves this, with the 44-year-old's real name listed with The United Stand, his YouTube channel.

Interestingly, he actually had a career in law enforcement before his current job became a full-time occupation – he was a police detective investigating financial fraud, which meant he needed to create an alias when he wanted to start posting his videos.

Mark Goldbridge net worth

There is a reason why being a successful influencer is something that kids crave to be at school these days – something that was simply impossible when sitting down with your careers officer back in the day! It can be an extremely lucrative job, depending on the level of success achieved, and it appears as though Goldbridge is making a great living out of keeping the masses entertained.

Incredibly, Goldbridge has a reported net worth of €5m (£3.9m) and earns around $250,000 (£196,000) per year, which sums up how big his following is and the success he has achieved as the years have passed.

Mark Goldbridge Twitter

Goldbridge is a big presence on Twitter/X, with over 800,000 followers to his name as of March 2024, and he will often be found providing his latest thoughts on all things United, even providing a balanced view on rival clubs in an age when so many have wild opinions simply to generate clicks.

Away from the public eye, Goldbridge is a married man with a family. He met his wife when he was 20 while living in Ireland and working in insurance. They're married and have three children – two daughters and a son.

Mark Goldbridge age and height

One thing that can often come as a surprise to many is Goldbridge's age, with the Nottingham-born personality currently 44, turning 45 in April 2024. For whatever reason, it is easy to envisage him being younger than that when viewing his content. Goldbridge is 5 foot 8 inches tall.

Mark Goldbridge Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

While Goldbridge is clearly a big United fan, he will often spend his time discussing their rivals, like any other level-headed football supporter.

The 44-year-old has had plenty to say about Liverpool down the years, but while some may mock his opinions on other matters, Reds supporters actually appear to think relatively highly of him.

Goldbridge has appeared on Liverpool fan site The Redmen TV in the past, for example, speaking fairly and concisely about United's adversaries, and it is a reminder that some of his antics during games can often be part of the character he has developed, often for comic purposes more than anything else.

In fairness to him, it looks as though he has realised that there is a space in the market for someone more measured than the classic Twitter tribalism nonsense most content creators opt for.

It takes a lot for any United supporter to praise Liverpool, especially given their success during the Jurgen Klopp era, not to mention online when millions of people can view your thoughts. For that reason, Goldbridge deserves praise for this.

Overall, he may not be to everyone's taste, but once you realise much of his schtick is tongue-in-cheek and appreciate that he can also talk plenty of sense, it becomes far easier to simply sit back and enjoy those Partridge-esque moments.
