'I can't see it' – Liverpool legend warns former club over Alexander Isak transfer

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has claimed he "can't see" Newcastle allowing Alexander Isak to move to Anfield this summer despite the Reds' interest.

Aldridge, who won a league title and the FA Cup as a player with Liverpool, has admitted he struggles to see how Newcastle would allow star striker Isak to join the Reds. The Magpies are said to be bracing themselves for an approach from the Anfield club, having struggled to make much progress with the Swedish forward over a contract extension.

Liverpool have already forked out more than a fair amount in transfer fees this summer following deals for Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. However, while the Merseysiders are confident they could complete a move for Isak without breaching Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR), Aldridge is not convinced Newcastle will allow the deal to go through even though he loves the player.

WHAT ALDRIDGE SAID

Aldridge told : “Liverpool have some thinking to do in regard to the centre forward position.

“If the club are going to replace Darwin Nunez, who are they going to bring in? Will Florian Wirtz play as a false nine? For me, Alexander Isak is the player on everyone’s mind and would be the perfect addition up front.

“He’d be a superb signing, but I can’t see Newcastle letting him go, and if they did, it would be for a huge fee. I don’t know what the club’s plans are, but they need to get something sorted before the start of the season.

“Liverpool also can’t allow Luiz Diaz’s contract to run down and him leave for free – ‘no player is bigger than the club’ as they say. There’s so much happening at Liverpool right now; they don’t need another saga with a player’s contract – we all saw what happened with Trent Alexander-Arnold. If it was down to me, I’d give Diaz a new contract – I want him to stay.”

Barcelona's attempts to sign a new attacker have hit multiple roadblocks this summer. Nico Williams' decision to stay in Bilbao, rumours linking Luis Diaz to Bayern and the ongoing haggling over Marcus Rashford's future have provided little hope for La Blaugrana. Lookman has latterly emerged as a possible option for the Spanish giants, as it is believed Atalanta will accept an offer of less than €50 million (£43m/$58m) for the 27-year-old. However, the Nigerian star is represented by the same agency as ter Stegen, potentially scuppering negotiations.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The fractious fallout between ter Stegen and his club of more than 11 years has rumbled on through the summer. The initial fallout came after the signing of Joan Garcia, who is the presumptive favourite to start in Hansi Flick's team going forward. In fact, recent reports suggest the German international may be third choice behind Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny. The Polish international has signed a new deal that will see him remain at the Camp Nou until 2027.

Ter Stegen is believed to be furious about being forced out of the club, and while rumours of a transfer to Monaco were floated, it the shot stopper rejected those advances. It has been suggested that ter Stegen will leave the club if the remainder of his deal is paid in full. He is under contract until 2028.

It is highly unlikely the club will give into those demands, given their perilous financial situation over the past four seasons. The 33-year-old is seemingly prepared to stay at the Camp Nou and fight for his spot.

'A real shocker': Wasim and Waqar slam Afridi's Sydney omission

“These guys have to understand and learn, if you want to be a great of the game or do you want to be a millionaire,” Wasim said

Former Pakistan fast bowlers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis were scathing in their criticism of the decision to rest Shaheen Shah Afridi from the third Test at the SCG.Wasim claimed the decision “had nothing to do with the management” and was “solely [Shaheen’s] decision”, warning players more broadly they had to decide “if you want to be a great of the game or do you want to be a millionaire” when it came to deciding which format to prioritise.”Straight after this there are five T20s in New Zealand, and Shaheen’s the captain,” Wasim said on . “But T20 cricket, who cares? I understand, it’s there for entertainment and it’s there for financial gain for cricket boards, for players, but cricketers should know that Test cricket is the ultimate.Related

Shahid Afridi: Rauf should be part of Test side instead of BBL

“If we talk about what happened 20 years ago in this Test in Sydney, nobody knows what happened last night in T20. That’s the difference. These guys have to understand and learn, if you want to be a great of the game or do you want to be a millionaire. You can become both but with a little more sense.”Waqar was similarly surprised, saying Afridi’s absence “made me laugh”.”That’s a real shocker for me because I was expecting him to be a part of this Test match because he looked good in the previous match. He started feeling like the old Shaheen Afridi and started to swing the ball and the pace was getting better.”

Afridi’s workload was a matter of concern for Pakistan over the first two Tests. Leading a depleted, inexperienced fast bowling line-up without a lead spinner in the first two Tests, he bowled four balls short of 100 overs, almost 30 more than the second busiest bowler of the series, Nathan Lyon. His workload over a wider period of time has also become an issue as he assumed greater responsibility in white-ball cricket. He is the captain of Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League, and signed a three-year deal with the ILT20 last year.He was also appointed captain of the Pakistan T20I side, which he will take charge of in New Zealand in a five-match T20I series that starts five days after the scheduled end of the third Test. Despite spending time out with injury, only eight pace bowlers have bowled more balls than Afridi in international cricket since July 2022.Ahead of the series, Haris Rauf had made himself unavailable, instead opting to take up his BBL deal with Melbourne Stars.

England wait on Rehan Ahmed availability for third Test after visa issues resurface

England are awaiting confirmation that Rehan Ahmed will be available to play in the third Test of their series in India this week, after the ECB conceded that a “paperwork discrepancy” prompted a hold-up at Hirasar Airport in Rajkot that was only resolved by the issuance of a temporary visa.Rehan was initially prohibited from re-entering India on Monday evening after England’s mid-series break in Abu Dhabi because he only held a single-entry visa. After a delay, local authorities arrived at a short-term solution which allowed him to travel to the team’s hotel with the rest of the touring party.”We were advised, on returning to India, that there was paperwork discrepancy with Rehan Ahmed’s visa,” an ECB spokesperson said on Tuesday. “The local authorities at Rajkot Airport were supportive, enabling Rehan entry on a temporary visa. The correct visa should be processed and issued in the coming days.”Rehan, the legspinning allrounder, trained with his team-mates at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Tuesday and is expected to receive clearance to remain in India shortly. He appears set to retain his place in England’s team for the third Test, which starts on Thursday, after taking six wickets in the second. The issue comes weeks after Shoaib Bashir’s arrival in India was delayed by a week because of the late issuing of his visa, which resulted in him missing the first Test in Hyderabad.Bashir, who has Pakistani heritage, eventually arrived on January 28 – the fourth day of the first Test – having initially remained in Abu Dhabi, where England had their pre-tour training camp, before returning to the UK to get his visa stamped. He went on to make his debut in the second Test at Visakhapatnam.Like Bashir, Rehan was born in England and has Pakistani heritage, but he had no initial trouble entering the country because of a visa he had secured in October as a standby player for England’s World Cup squad. His delay, seemingly the result of a clerical oversight by the ECB, is a problem that should not have arisen.Ollie Robinson, who is yet to feature in the series, revealed earlier on Monday that he only received his visa on the morning that England initially flew to Hyderabad from Abu Dhabi last month, having heard the previous night from team manager Wayne Bentley that another paperwork error had caused a delay.”He [Bentley] said, ‘your visa has been denied’ or something,” Robinson said on his podcast, . “There was an error at the ECB – I think they must have just put an initial wrong, or one letter must have been wrong. It didn’t pass. He was like, ‘you’re not coming to India – you have to stay here for another night… it could be two nights, could be three nights, don’t know how long it’s going to take.’ Luckily, I woke up in the morning to a nice message from Wayne saying ‘visa’s here’.”Ollie Pope, England’s vice-captain, described Rehan’s situation as “very frustrating” on Tuesday. “I’m not sure whose mistake it was. I don’t want to name any names,” Pope said. “It’s very frustrating, but hopefully [it] will all be sorted by the end of the day, he’s cleared for the next game and the rest of the trip. It’s a bit of bad luck, but hopefully all sorted.”It sounds pretty positive. I think we’re getting around Rehan. He’s in good spirits. He was training today. I think it was sorted fairly quickly yesterday, but obviously it’s all going on behind the scenes and hopefully it’ll all be sorted within the next day or so. He’s in good spirits, the boys are getting around him and he’s just happy to be out here training.”1230 GMT, Tuesday – This story was updated to include the ECB’s statement and Pope’s comments.

The Barca forward, who recently signed a new long-term deal with the club and was handed the iconic No.10 shirt, addressed the backlash head-on during a press conference, drawing a firm line between his personal and professional life.

During the press conference Yamal made a clear distinction between his personal and professional life, saying: "Ultimately, I work for Barca, I play for Barca, but when I'm away from the Ciudad Deportiva, I enjoy my life, and that's it."

The Spanish Ministry of Social Rights has requested an investigation into the event following a formal complaint made by the Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE). A video circulating on social media appeared to show performers arriving at the venue, sparking backlash and legal scrutiny.

While Yamal has not commented on the specifics of the legal complaint, he made a strong statement regarding the scrutiny he faces. The young forward, who is no stranger to media attention, chose to deliver his response in Spanish to ensure clarity, despite the question being posed in Catalan. Tata extends IPL title sponsorship deal till 2028

The five-year extension, from 2024 to 2028, cost Tata INR 2500 crore (US$301 million approx.)

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jan-2024The Tata Group has extended its title sponsorship of the IPL for another five years, from 2024 to 2028, for INR 2500 crore (US$301 million approx.), making it the “highest-ever sponsorship amount in the history of the league,” a BCCI statement said. The group were the IPL title sponsors in 2022 and 2023, and are also the title sponsors of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).”The collaboration with TATA Group for the title sponsorship of IPL 2024-28 is a significant milestone in IPL’s journey,” IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal said. “The record-breaking sum of INR 2500 crore by TATA Group is a testament to the immense value and appeal that the IPL holds in the world of sports.”This unprecedented amount not only sets a new benchmark in the history of the league but also reaffirms the IPL’s position as a premier sporting event with global impact. TATA Group’s commitment to cricket and sports is truly commendable, and we look forward to scaling new heights together and providing fans with unparalleled cricketing entertainment.”The Tata Group had replaced Vivo as IPL title sponsors for the last two seasons. The BCCI had temporarily severed ties with Vivo, a Chinese mobile and technology company, following political tensions between India and China in June 2020. Vivo had originally bagged the title sponsorship for 2018 to 2022 for INR 2199 crores (US $341 million approx. at the time), but for the 2020 season, it was replaced by Dream 11, before Vivo returned for the 2021 season.Tata’s bid for the next five years is a 13.7% jump over what Vivo had paid for 2018-22.”This collaboration embodies the spirit of growth, innovation, and a mutual dedication to excellence,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said. “The unprecedented financial commitment reflects the immense scale and global impact of the IPL on the international sports stage.”The 2024 IPL will be played from March 22 and run till the end of May, just before the men’s T20 World Cup kicks off on June 1.

Reece, Guest steer Derbyshire to safety

Glamorgan only managed two further wickets on day four as both teams settled for an 11-point draw

ECB Reporters Network15-Apr-2024The Vitality County Championship match between Glamorgan and Derbyshire finished as a draw as a superb stand between Luis Reece and Brooke Guest guided their team to safety.Derbyshire had an improbable target of 401 to chase on the final day with a Glamorgan victory more likely when play resumed in Cardiff with the visitors 40 for 1.The early wickets of David Lloyd and Wayne Madsen gave Glamorgan some early hope but those were the last wickets to fall in the match as batting became increasingly straightforward on this pitch.Reece finished on 91 not out with Guest also undefeated on 72 with Derbyshire finishing their second innings on 225 for 3.Play began 15 mins late thanks to overnight rain with Glamorgan needing nine wickets and Derbyshire requiring another 361 runs to claim victory. Early wickets would be important for Glamorgan given that this pitch has been hard to start on and then got easier as you adjusted to its slow nature.Derbyshire lost the first wicket of the day having added just three runs to their overnight total when former Glamorgan player David Lloyd was run out by a sharp throw from Mason Crane for 24.A 34-run stand between Luis Reece and Wayne Madsen settled some of those nerves that may have been caused in the Derbyshire ranks before James Harris bowled Madsen for 25. That left Derbyshire at 79 for 3 and in danger. From there an excellent and assured partnership of 146 between Reece and Guest took the visitors to the lunch break and then to the close of play. Both players took a while to get started but batted with increasing confidence as the day progressed.A heavy shower during the interval kept the players from the field and took more overs out of a game that already looked to be heading towards a draw after promising an entertaining finish on the first two days of this match.Crane had enjoyed the turning pitch in the first innings of this match but as the ball began to behave less erratically in the second innings he struggled for wickets and control. His final figures of none for 91 saw him going a 5.35 runs an over.Another brief shower took the players off the field on the stroke to tea and when they resumed we were left with the unlikely equation for victory of either 212 runs from 34 overs or seven wickets on a pitch that was flattening out as the match progressed. The pick of the Glamorgan bowlers was Harris who finished with figures of 2 for 21, and while he struggled to generate chances he was once again very difficult to score off.During the evening session, both Reece and Guest looked untroubled by the Glamorgan bowling attack as it became apparent that the game was heading towards a draw. Both teams claim 11 points from this match with Glamorgan set to travel to Northamptonshire next week and Derbyshire hosting Leicestershire.
