Man City have found a new superstar in 8/10 gem who outclassed KDB & McAtee

Manchester City are safely through to the FA Cup quarter-finals thanks to a 3-1 win at home to Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle.

This game had the potential to be a tricky one to navigate for the Citizens given the Pilgrims knocked out Premier League leaders Liverpool in the previous round.

As it happened, the visitors took the lead at the Etihad Stadium. It was a poor goal to concede from City’s point of view, as Argyle centre-back Maksym Talovierov found himself unmarked from a corner and rose highest to head home.

However, City did not have to wait too long for their equaliser. Youngster Nico O’Reilly levelled the game back up in first-half stoppage-time and got himself a second to give City the lead with 15 minutes left.

Pep Guardiola’s men sealed their place in the next round thanks to a goal from Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian, who put in an impressive performance, ran onto a through ball from talismanic striker Erling Haaland and poked home from just inside the six-yard box.

It was a professional performance on the whole from the Citizens, although one player who struggled at times was youngster James McAtee.

James McAtee's stats v Plymouth

Make no mistake, McAtee’s performance was by no means a poor one. However, the City ace, who operated in the No 10 role against the Championship outfit, did not really have a big influence on the game.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

That said, this was not through lack of effort. The midfielder, who was substituted on the hour mark for Haaland, worked incredibly hard, but simply struggled to get into the game.

McAtee’s stats from the game on Sofascore show just how tough of a match it was for him. The 22-year-old had just 35 touches, although he did manage to create two chances in that time.

Joe Krishnan, a journalist for The Express, gave the attacking midfielder a post-match rating of 6/10 for his efforts. He explained that he “looked bright in the early stages” and was “recognised with a warm ovation” upon his substitution.

It was certainly a mixed night for McAtee, although the same cannot be said for another City academy star who didn’t just outclass the academy graduate but also the great De Bruyne.

The Man City player who thrived most vs Plymouth

It was an excellent evening for Nico O’Reilly. The youngster has now played nine times for the first team this season following his performance against the Pilgrims, and has impressed with his ability on the ball and versatility.

On Saturday night, the youngster started at left-back, but he has also played at centre-back, across the midfield and even as a No 9 this term, which is certainly handy for Guardiola to rely on.

His goals were impressive, too. Both were headers from set-pieces, with the first a glancing effort from a De Bruyne cross that the goalkeeper got a hand to, but nothing more. O’Reilly’s was teed up by Phil Foden for his second, scoring with a towering effort at the back post from a corner.

The youngster’s stats from the game showed how big his influence was. He had 90 touches and completed 89% of his passes. The City left-back also made one clearance and one interception.

Krishnan highlighted that O’Reilly had to grow into the game, pointing out that he “initially struggled to make the same impact” as Josko Gvardiol in an attacking sense. However, he gave him an 8/10 for what was ultimately a decisive performance.

O’Reilly is certainly an exciting talent and really feels like the future feature of the Citizens team for the coming years.

His ability to play anywhere required of him on the pitch and his capability of finding the net is extremely useful.

Nico O'Reilly for Manchester City

The 19-year-old has certainly not done his future first-team chances any harm after Saturday’s showing. Perhaps City will get used to the sight of him donning that famous sky blue shirt with Haaland and co on a more regular basis.

Worse than Marmoush v Liverpool: Pep must finally axe 5/10 Man City man

Manchester City's pursuit of a top four finish in the Premier League was dealt a blow after they were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at The Etihad on Sunday. The Cityzens are now level on points with Newcastle United, who are fifth, and only one point ahead of Bournemouth and Chelsea in sixth and seventh respectively. Goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai secured all three points for the away side on an evening to forget for Pep Guardiola and his men, who failed to match Arne Slot's team's quality.

City swooped to sign Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt in the January transfer window, but the exciting addition could not make the difference against the Reds on Sunday.Omar Marmoush's performance against LiverpoolThe Egypt international lined up just behind Phil Foden as a second striker and had mixed success, with some moments of quality and other moments to forget.Marmoush tried to get at the Liverpool defence and did manage to complete two of his three attempted dribbles, whilst he also got four shots off during the match. However, only two of those shots troubled Alisson and the Brazil international kept hold of both efforts, as the attacker's shots did not have enough quality on them to seriously trouble the goalkeeper.Marmoush, who completed 89% of his attempted passes, did not create any 'big chances' for his teammates, though, and lost five of his nine duels, as he struggled with the physicality of the game at times. These statistics show that the former Bundesliga star, who recently scored a hat-trick against Newcastle, caused some problems for the Reds, but ultimately did not do enough to earn a positive result for his side. The 26-year-old dynamo had showcased his quality in front of goal, as shown in the highlights above, against the Magpies, but he could not replicate that with any of his four shots this time around.Whilst it was not a brilliant display by Marmoush against Liverpool, attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was even worse than the January recruit with his showing at The Etihad.Kevin De Bruyne's performance against LiverpoolThe Belgian star had racked up four goals and nine assists in 19 career games against Liverpool in all competitions prior to the clash at The Etihad on Sunday.De Bruyne was once a player who could step up to win City matches against the best teams, as evidenced by his excellent record against the Reds, but his performance this time around illustrated his decline on the pitch. In 66 minutes on the pitch, the former Chelsea talent did not create a single 'big chance' for his teammates or register an effort on goal to test Alisson. In fact, his shot at the end of the first half was closer to the top tier of the stands than it was to the Liverpool goal.

Stats via Sofascore

As you can see in the table above, de Bruyne was even worse than Marmoush against Liverpool, as he had fewer shots on target, completed a lower percentage of his passes, and won half as many duels – showing that he offered less than the Egyptian on and off the ball. The Express handed him a player rating of just 5/10 and wrote that he 'struggled' to deal with the intensity of the game, which is backed up by his dismal statistics.Man City supporters have become accustomed to seeing the Belgian magician consistently delivering quality performances, goals, and assists, but he has been far from his best of late, with one goal – against Leyton Orient – and zero assists in his last seven matches.imagelargeChalkboardFootball FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game. His contract at The Etihad comes to an end in the summer, just shy of ten years at the club, and Guardiola must permanently move on from the midfielder by not attempting to pin him down to a contract extension. Why Manchester City should let De Bruyne goThe Spanish head coach should ruthlessly ditch the Belgium international and allow him to leave on a free transfer, because his form has declined over the past 18 months or so and he is one of the highest earners at the club.Per Capology, de Bruyne earns £400k-per-week, ranking him second and only behind Erling Haaland (£525k-per-week) at City, and they have not got value for money on that this season.De Bruyne has racked up 173 assists in his Manchester City career in all competitions, with some of his best included in the clips above, but he appears to be past his creative peak.He has created 11 'big chances' in 18 Premier League appearances this season, which is a far cry from the 21 'big chances' he provided his teammates with in the same number of games in the division last term.

Wages via Capology & stats via WhoScored

As you can see in the table above, only Jack Grealish – another City forward – has produced less than de Bruyne in the final third among the top-earning attackers in the top-flight this season. This suggests that the Cityzens are not getting bang for their buck with the Belgian hero, who appears to be past his best and turns 34 in June, as players earning a similar amount of money to him have provided their teams with far more quality – in goals and assists – in the Premier League. Now could be the perfect time for City to part ways with the club legend, upon the expiry of his contract in the summer, and his departure could provide another player with a chance to step up and become a new icon for the supporters moving forward, whether that is Marmoush, Phil Foden, Savinho, or potentially a new signing. It will then be down to the recruitment team and Guardiola to unearth the next de Bruyne, whether that is a new signing or an emerging talent from the academy, to bolster the midfield in the 2025/26 campaign and beyond. He earns more than Ndiaye: Everton must axe Thelwell's "disaster" signing

Everton have undergone an incredible transformation since David Moyes was placed at the wheel, driving up the Premier League table, away from the danger zone and toward the comfy security of mid-table.

But Moyes isn’t going to stop there. He won the Conference League with West Ham United, remember, led the Hammers through three successive campaigns on the continent.

But Merseyside is his home, Everton his club, and he wants to get them back on their perch, having struggled to impress for so long.

With The Friedkin Group replacing Farhad Moshiri at the head of the table, Moyes has been told he will have money to spend this summer, with Kevin Thelwell also exiting his role as Director of Football at the end of the term, succeeded by Leeds United’s Angus Kinnear.

Thelwell has helped to guide Everton through a turbulent period, and though he had his ups and downs, he can leave with his head held high after a promising final transfer window in 2024.

Everton's recent transfer business

Everton emerged from the 2023/24 campaign bruised but not broken. Financial breaches had allowed PSR to clamp down on Merseyside and extract eight hard-earned points from Sean Dyche’s squad, but this wasn’t enough to send them spinning to the second tier.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Thus, spending was always going to be difficult, but the sales of Amadou Onana, Ben Godfrey and homegrown Lewis Dobbin generated finances in the £70m ballpark, allowing for several deals that needed to hit the mark.

Jake O’Brien has come into his own at right-back since Moyes took to the helm, while Orel Mangala was excellent before cruelly seeing his season ended prematurely in January due to injury. He’s a loanee, but Everton have the option to sign him permanently.

Jesper Lindstrom hasn’t been brilliant on the right flank, yet to score, but at least he’s only on loan – and has provided something of a steady and industrious outlet.

Then there’s Iliman Ndiaye, signed from Marseille for £15m. Pure magic on the alternate wing, notching eight goals from 28 matches across all competitions. He’s played 24 times in the Premier League in the Toffees, but three of his six strikes came in the five appearances under Moyes’ leadership.

Thelwell did his best and fans have been receptive to his efforts, thankful for them. However, that’s not to say he invariably hit the mark when shopping, with Everton still needing to get rid of his worst signing despite the flop last kicking a ball for the Blues in 2023.

Thelwell's worst Everton signing must go

Everton have missed the mark on more than a few occasions in the 12 years since Moyes left for Manchester United, picked as Sir Alex Ferguson’s heir.

While he hasn’t been the most costly blunder, Neal Maupay’s got to be down at the nadir, certainly one of Thelwell’s biggest misfires during his time at the decision table.

Everton striker Neal Maupay.

After several decent Premier League campaigns in Brighton, Frank Lampard’s Everton moved to sign Maupay for a £15m fee, but his time at the club quickly devolved into a nightmare.

Maupay bagged just the one goal across 32 appearances in all competitions for Everton. Notorious for his reputation as a wind-up merchant, the French striker endured his most pitiful spell by the banks of the River Mersey.

His revival at Brentford further frustrated the Everton fanbase, but not nearly as much as his remarks last year: “Whenever I’m having a bad day, I just check the Everton score and smile.” A brazen thing to say given he’s still on the books.

With four goals and four assists apiece in Ligue 1 this season, starting only 12 matches under Roberto De Zerbi, Maupay is enjoying something of a renaissance – but that doesn’t mean he’s got a future on Merseyside.

Earning around £48k per week, the 28-year-old Everton player is still earning more than Ndiaye (£45k-per-week), emphasising the woe that cannot be shaken from this deal-that-shouldn’t-have-been.

While Marseille are likely to be covering a portion – if not all – of his salary – it still represents a hefty pack packet that was agreed upon when Everton initially welcomed him to the club with high hopes that he would become their abiding talisman.

Marseille have the option to keep Maupay at the Stade Vélodrome for about £3m, which would be decent business if Everton succeed in recouping at least something for one of their most infamous modern players.

Perhaps Thelwell orchestrated one last piece of good business in the Frenchman’s loan package. Without question, though, Maupay’s signing was a “disaster” – a sentiment shared by journalist Paul Brown – and those of an Everton persuasion just want him off the books.

Chelsea must rue selling "Messi of goalkeepers" who’s better than Sanchez

After Chelsea’s horrendous defensive record last season, conceding 63 goals in 38 Premier League games (their worst defensive record in the past ten years), Enzo Maresca has been given the task of reducing that number this time around and asserting more control for the Blues.

Whilst it hasn’t been a huge turnaround, Chelsea have conceded 34 goals in 25 games this season, making their goals conceded per 90 metric 1.36. This would mean if the Blues continue on this trajectory, they will finish the season having conceded 52 goals (51.68 rounded up).

Averaging 58.6% possession so far this season, which is the second-highest in this metric and only averaging 11.3 shots conceded per game this season, the sixth fewest in the division, Chelsea have made strides to improve their overall defensive unit, but there are still a few major holes that continue to let them down.

Robert Sanchez's Chelsea form

Chelsea made the signing of Robert Sanchez in the 2023/24 summer transfer window, joining for a fee of around £25m. The 27-year-old has made 43 appearances for the Blues since joining, conceding 59 goals and keeping nine clean sheets, totalling 3,864 minutes played.

Sanchez has been a major culprit at Chelsea in their recent poor run of form, making some huge errors – including in the defeat to Manchester City – leading to Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville to state:

To further rubberstamp that point, the former Brighton man currently leads the way in the division – alongside Ipswich’s Arijanet Muric – with regard to most errors leading to a goal (five) in the top flight in 2024/25.

Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen

In recent weeks, Sanchez has been dropped to the Chelsea bench, with summer signing Filip Jorgensen being given the number one spot instead, but the Blues must reflect back to when they had one of the very best in the world in this position once upon a time.

Chelsea once had the "Messi of goalkeepers"

Chelsea sold Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid in 2018, with the Belgian leaving for a fee of around £35m. In his time at Chelsea, the shot-stopper made 154 appearances, conceding 152 goals, keeping 58 clean sheets and totalling 13,834 minutes played.

When comparing Courtois to the current Chelsea goalkeepers, your first thought may be that Jorgensen and Sanchez actually have higher save percentages and face more shots against them, which gives them better shot-stopping metrics.

However, when looking at “Post-Shot xG per Shot on Target”, you can see Courtois actually faces higher xG shots during a game, while also boasting a better clean sheet percentage.

Ex-Real Madrid goalkeeper, Santi Canizares, labelled Courtois “the Maradona, Messi, Cristiano of goalkeepers”. Canizares also stated he is “better than the rest and he performs every day”, which is shown in his Real Madrid numbers, making 268 appearances for the Spanish giants, conceding 254 goals, keeping 107 clean sheets and totalling 24,229 minutes played.

Thibaut-Courtois-Chelsea

With many Chelsea fans continuing to bang the drum that they need a world-class goalkeeper between the sticks to challenge for major honours, had Courtois never left, the Blues would have been in a much stronger position.

Tottenham make contact with "very versatile" manager to replace Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur have reached out to the representatives of a “very versatile” manager to potentially replace the under-pressure Ange Postecoglou, with Spurs doing their due-diligence on future options if they decide to sack their current head coach.

Tottenham face AZ Alkmaar in Europa League second leg

On the field, Postecoglou’s side are gearing up for their highly-anticipated Europa League Last 16 second leg clash against AZ Alkmaar.

Spurs go into the game bearing the task of overcoming a one-goal deficit from their first leg in the Netherlands, trailing 1-0 to AZ after Lucas Bergvall’s own goal handed the Eredivisie side a crucial advantage ahead of their trip to north London.

The Europa League comes as Tottenham’s only chance to win any major silverware this season and end their 17-year wait for a trophy, but they’ll have to get the better of AZ without star winger Dejan Kulusevski, Radu Dragusin, Richarlison and January signing Kevin Danso, who picked up a hamstring injury against Bournemouth over the weekend.

“Yeah, Kevin got a hamstring injury in the last game so he is out. Ben [Davies] is back in, so that’s the only change from the weekend. Everyone else got through the game no problems,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham team news ahead of AZ.

However, the 59-year-old benefits from having all four of his “leaders” fit and available to play together, which has been rare this season, with Son Heung-min, James Maddison, Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario set to play a key role this evening.

“I think Vic was enormous for us in the first leg and he was big for us on the weekend as well,” said Postecoglou.

“You want your big, experienced players to perform in these games, for sure. We have relied a lot on our younger players who have really progressed really well, but I guess a night like tomorrow night, having the likes of Romero, Maddison, Vicario and Sonny out there, they are our four leaders and I don’t think we’ve had them on the park at all this year or very little anyway. Having all four of them, the whole leadership group out there, will definitely be beneficial.”

A good run in Europe could even be crucial for Postecoglou to keep his job, with reports suggesting that Tottenham are identifying managerial targets like Inter Milan’s Simone Inzaghi.

Tottenham make contact with Andoni Iraola's representatives

Another tactician who’s been linked with the potentially vacant post at the end of this season is Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola.

The Spaniard has impressed onlookers after guiding his team to within touching distance of a Champions League qualification place, and he’s done well to cope with injuries to key players in his Bournemouth squad of late.

The Cherries want to tie him down with a new contract and fend off elite clubs who may be interested, according to GiveMeSport, and Spurs are very much interested in the prospect of appointing Rayo Vallecano’s ex-head coach.

According to the outlet, Tottenham have even made contact with Iraola via his agents, expressing their serious interest in the 42-year-old as an alternative to Postecoglou.

Bournemouth, though, will fight tooth and nail to keep hold of their highly-respected manager, as the south coast side plan talks to tie him down with fresh terms at the Vitality Stadium.

Called a “very versatile” manager who “earns the respect of the dressing room” by football analysts (X), his reputation for adapting to different scenarios and taking initiative could be very tempting for Spurs, as Postecoglou has often been criticised for not having those attributes and sticking to the same formula.

Leeds may regret selling a "goal machine" who's now outperforming Gnonto

In Leeds United’s quest for promotion from the Championship this season, it’s pivotal that all the attackers live up to expectations to hand Daniel Farke the best chance of claiming a third league title of his career.

Joel Piroe has been the star man at the top end of the pitch at Elland Road, cementing his place as a regular starter, subsequently notching 15 goals in 35 matches – the most of any player in the division to date.

Manor Solomon is another player who’s thrived with consistent minutes in Yorkshire, registering 14 combined goals and assists in 2024/25 and staking his claim for a permanent move after his temporary stint.

Daniel James is the third first-team star who’s set the division alight in England’s second tier in recent months, achieving a total of 19 goal contributions, just a couple off his tally of last campaign.

However, one other has also impressed but has struggled for regular starts amid the form of other talents, restricting him to minutes off the substitutes bench.

Wilfried Gnonto’s stats for Leeds in 2024/25

After failing to secure promotion last season, many expected winger Wilfried Gnonto to depart Leeds for a Premier League side – following the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter out the door.

However, the Italian stayed put in Yorkshire but has since struggled for starts in 2024/25, starting just 20 matches and having to settle for a place on the bench.

The 21-year-old attacker has registered five goals and five assists to date, still producing an impressive record despite his lack of starting recent weeks.

Solomon and James’s recent form in the Championship has restricted him to just 35 minutes of league action in the last six weeks, with his only goal in 2025 coming in the 7-0 thrashing of Cardiff City.

He’s also been outperformed by another former Whites talent, with the club’s decision to offload him now looking to be a regret, considering his form and tender age.

The former Leeds gem who’s outperforming Gnonto

After dropping into the second tier, numerous players have moved to and from Yorkshire, something to be expected as they look to bounce back to the Premier League.

One player who left on loan in the summer was attacker Sonny Perkins, who linked up with Leyton Orient, looking to gain valuable first-team minutes to continue his progression.

Leeds United striker Sonny Perkins.

The 21-year-old joined the Whites from West Ham United back in 2022 but would make just four senior appearances – leading to Rene Maric dubbing him “super talented” before being sent on loan to Oxford United for the second half of last season.

Perkins has since starred in England’s third tier since his temporary move, becoming a key player in Richie Wellens’ hopes of securing a play-off place.

Previously described as a “goal machine” by former boss Michael Skubala, his move to London is finally seeing him live up to that potential. Indeed, this campaign has seen him register 12 combined goals and assists, leading to a permanent move to the O’s in January, ending his time at Leeds.

The form of the current first team members has massively restricted his playing time at Elland Road, leading to his move away – which could prove to be a mistake down the line.
