  • Red Devils set to beat Madrid to Yoro
  • But club still interested in other defenders
  • Future deals will depend on budget
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Devils are set to beat Real Madrid to the signature of the highly-rated 18-year-old French defender, who flew into Manchester on Wednesday for a medical to finalise a £52m ($68m) move. United, however, are still interested in other defensive targets.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

And the fact they have signed Yoro does not mean they are less likely to pursue deals for Bayern Munich centre-back De Ligt or Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite. GOAL understands that although the deal for Yoro has moved ahead, De Ligt and Branthwaite are both still admired by United. They remain options to sign subject to having budget and squad space available as the transfer window evolves.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Yoro, who joined Lille's academy when he was just six years old, overtook Eden Hazard as the second-youngest player to play for the club when he made his debut against Nice aged 16 years, six months and one day. He scored his first goal for the club aged 17 and made 30 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, helping the team finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League qualifying rounds.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

Yoro is due to become United's second signing of the summer after Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee arrived from Bologna. He is due to join the club on their tour of the United States. In the meantime, United will look to further add to the squad before the new Premier League season begins on August 16 at home to Fulham. They have had two bids for Branthwaite rejected by Everton, the latest worth up to £50 million ($64m). De Ligt, who had a hugely successful period at Ajax under Erik ten Hag, is valued at €50m (£42m/$54m).

Michael becomes fourth-generation Snedden in first-class cricket

Tuesday was special for the Snedden family as Michael Snedden, the 27-year-old medium-fast bowler, became the latest from the family to play first-class cricket – he is the first fourth-generation cricketer in New Zealand’s first-class history.Michael follows in the footsteps of his father, 1980s New Zealand international Martin Snedden, grandfather Warwick Snedden, and great-grandfather Nessie Snedden to play first-class cricket. While Martin played 25 Tests and 93 ODIs between 1980 and 1990, Nessie captained the country in several representative matches against overseas sides, but his career finished before New Zealand were granted Test status.Overall, Michael is the sixth cricketer from the Snedden family to play first-class cricket, which also includes Nessie’s cousin Colin, who had a decade-long career with Auckland in the 1930s and 1940s, and Cyril, who played in 1920-21.Injuries to frontline seamers Hamish Bennett and Ollie Newton paved the way for Michael’s first-class debut for Wellington Firebirds in their second round Plunket Shield clash against Canterbury at Basin Reserve, which started on Tuesday.Michael spent his first day as a first-class cricketer in the dressing room as Wellington racked up 415 for 6 on the opening day of their second-round match against Canterbury.Michael made his List A debut for Auckland Aces during the Ford Trophy last year, but featured in just two matches that yielded three wickets. In his only innings with the bat, he made an unbeaten 18. He switched teams ahead of the 2019-20 season.Michael’s first taste of days’ cricket came in 2014, when he was picked for a tour game against the visiting Sri Lankans. It was a game in which he bowled only six overs before dislocating his shoulder. He was part of a strong New Zealand XI that played Sri Lanka again in a three-day game last year.

Ledley King has now told Tottenham chiefs to sign £20,000-a-week defender

Tottenham legend Ledley King has privately told Spurs chiefs to make a transfer swoop this summer.

Spurs want to sign new defenders for Postecoglou

Despite already bringing in Radu Dragusin from Genoa for £25 million in January, reports in the last few weeks suggest that Ange Postecoglou's defence could look very different next season.

Indeed, Postecoglou has already expressed the club's wish to bring in another centre-back, as the Lilywhites head coach claims it's an area which needs further reinforcement.

“If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at”, said Postecoglou on Spurs signing another centre-back.

“With all these things, it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here.

“I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen, but I think we’ll look to strengthen all areas of the park come the end of the season. That is planning that’s already underway, and other people are in charge of it at the moment.

“We’re a squad that needs to develop, and we’re looking for that younger demographic. But at the same time you’re looking for guys that have played."

As well as at centre-back, Spurs are identifying potential full-back signings, with Postecoglou believed to want alternatives to star defensive duo Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie. The pair have been crucial to Tottenham's success under Postecoglou and are a major foundation of their push for Champions League qualification next season, but there are arguably few quality alternatives to the duo behind them.

Emerson Royal stands out as the only choice behind Porro, while questions surround the longevity of Ben Davies at left-back and the torrid injury record of Ryan Sessegnon.

Tottenham told to sign Ben Johnson by Ledley King

Now, according to Football Transfers, Spurs legend King has told Tottenham to sign West Ham defender Ben Johnson to help fix their lack of depth at full-back.

The Englishman, who is now attracting interest from Tottenham as a result, is out of contract at the end of this season and could join the club for free. Former West Ham staff member Stuart Pearce highly rates the 24-year-old from their time together in east London as well.

"He's a wonderful professional to deal with and work with," said Pearce on the £20,000-a-week defender.

"We're very proud to have him out of our academy system as well, which is a real plus for us, especially with the connection to this club with the academy. I think he's just developing and getting better and better, and like with all young players, the more game time they have, the better they'll get, so I am delighted for the boy."

Newcastle’s "unbelievable" wonderkid is enduring a nightmare out on loan

Over the last year, Newcastle United have enjoyed success with multiple youngsters from within their academy or the transfer market.

Lewis Miley has been the most impressive, with the 17-year-old featuring heavily under boss Eddie Howe in the Premier League so far this campaign.

The youngster has even featured for the Magpies in the Champions League against the likes of PSG and AC Milan, with Miley not looking out of place despite his tender age.

The club have also invested in youth in the last few windows, with the Magpies signing winger Yankuba Minteh for around £5.8m on July 1st 2023 from Danish side Odense BK, before immediately joining Feyenoord on loan for the rest of the 2023/24 campaign.

He's impressed in the Eredivisie, scoring seven times in his 20 league appearances, as the 19-year-old looks to gain experience ahead of a potential first-team spot for Newcastle next season.

However, a fellow youngster has endured a season to forget, with another Newcastle talent failing to make an impact during his loan stint in the Netherlands.

Garang Kuol's move to Newcastle United

Attacker Garang Kuol joined Newcastle United back in January 2023, for a fee in the region of £300k after 11 goal contributions in 22 games for the Central Coast Mariners in Australia.

The "unbelievable" youngster, as dubbed by Barcelona manager Xavi, immediately joined Scottish side Hearts on loan until the end of the 2022/23 campaign, with the Magpies wanting the Australian to gain valuable first-team minutes.

He only featured nine times for the club, playing just 205 minutes, but scoring a key goal for the Jam Tarts in the 2-2 draw with Rangers at Ibrox.

He would leave the Scottish side at the end of the campaign, returning to the Magpies before being loaned out once more for the 2023/24 season – a move that has been a disaster for the 19-year-old.

Garang Kuol's disasterous loan move in 2023/24

The young attacker agreed to join Dutch side FC Volendam for the 2023/24 campaign, with the Magpies once again hoping Kuol can gain valuable first-team minutes.

He enjoyed a positive start to life in the Netherlands, featuring in 12 of the club's first 14 Eredivisie outings, with Kuol grabbing himself a goal and an assist in the process.

He's since failed to add to his goal or assist tally since his first 12 outings, with the Newcastle loanee only managing to score once in 15 league appearances this season.

However, the departure of manager Matthias Kohler in December has seen Kuol drop right down the pecking order, with the Australian barely getting any minutes in recent weeks.

In 2024, the 19-year-old has only featured for 32 minutes, with the youngster an unused substitute during Volderdam's last five league outings.

It has to be said, Kuol has been very unlucky during his latest loan spell. The circumstances surrounding his recent lack of game time are completely out of his hands – with the Australian finding it difficult to develop his game with limited minutes after Kohler's departure.

Given his disastrous campaign so far, it is pivotal that Howe and the hierarchy take a close look at the youngster and accommodate him with the right loan move next season to prevent his development from stagnating at St James' Park.

Teams begin day-night training with optional session in Indore

Plans to make the start of the second Test as dramatic as possible are in place in Kolkata

Varun Shetty in Indore17-Nov-2019After a three-day finish to the first Test, India and Bangladesh stayed back in Indore to train with the pink ball before heading to Kolkata for the second and final Test, also the maiden day-night Test for the two teams. On Sunday, an optional training session for both teams, six Indian players and ten Bangladesh players showed up. The focus for India seemed to be on batting, with only Hanuma Vihari bowling the odd ball. The batting practice was reliant on net bowlers and throwdowns. From the XI that played in the first Test, only Cheteshwar Pujara, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja trained on Sunday. Bangladesh had a bigger mix, with senior batsmen Mushfiqur Rahim, Imrul Kayes, and Mominul Haque having long sessions. The Eden Gardens Test will start on November 22, which gives the players just under a week for full-fledged preparation. At the moment, only a handful of players from the two teams have trained with the pink ball, mostly in small pockets during their regular training sessions before the start of the series.ALSO READ: ‘The lateral movement is big’ – Rahane’s pink-ball experience”I hadn’t played with the pink ball before,” Virat Kohli had said on Tuesday, before the first Test began. “I was given an opportunity to try and I wanted to, so that was my mindset behind playing with the pink ball. I think everyone else did it as well. You require extra concentration to pick the pink ball suddenly when you’re playing with the red ball.”It [the alternating] was to work on the reflexes a little bit as well. Because when you play with the red ball in the net and you arrive at the pink ball, it gets very difficult to pick it up, which can be the case in the game as well. It sort of gives you the match scenario and how it might be difficult to pick it early on. To get into that zone was the reason behind it.”

It’s a new experience, and as we go on, we’ll understand bowling with the pink ballIndia bowling coach Bharat Arun

There are various other factors that the players will have to take a look at.The few players in the Indian team who have played matches with pink balls have only played with the Kookaburra ball, whereas the Kolkata Test will be played with SG balls, the same brand as the ones used in regular Test and domestic cricket in the country. Also in the discussions, no doubt, will be catching. India dropped at least five clear catching chances across two innings in the first Test, and Bangladesh dropped two. And while a lot of talk around the pink ball so far has focused on swing, the spinners in the two teams will also have to figure their way around long spells in the dew that is expected at the ground in the evenings.ALSO READ: Sachin Tendulkar expects dew to affect pink-ball Test”Actually, it is a new experience for us, the pink ball,” bowling coach Bharat Arun said after India sealed the win on Saturday. “The spinners that we have are No. 1 and No. 2 in the world [among spinners, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, respectively]. They come with a lot of experience. My job is to give them the right feedback so that they can connect with what they know better and use that. It’s a new experience, and as we go on, we’ll understand bowling with the pink ball.”The players will also welcome the extra time to train in the relative calm of Indore as Kolkata prepares for what looks like it will be a grand affair under the direct guardianship of new BCCI president Sourav Ganguly at his home ground. Tickets for the first three days have been sold out and the Test could have a dramatic start, with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) reportedly looking to enlist paratroopers to deliver pink balls to the two captains at the start.”The paratroopers will fly into the wicket with two pink balls. We have discussed the plans with the army (Eastern Command),” CAB secretary Abhishek Dalmiya was quoted as saying by on Friday. The army, it is believed, will also play both teams’ national anthems before the start of the game. The paratrooper delivery is only one element of a lavish plan, which includes the ceremonial ringing of the Eden Gardens bell by Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, laps along the boundary by sporting greats of the two nations, and a feature programme with five players who were part of India’s famous 2001 come-from-behind win against Australia in Kolkata.GMT 1445 The story was updated with details of the two teams’ training sessions on Sunday evening.

Here is a detailed look at Spain's top 10 goalscorers:

10 Sergio Ramos 23 goals (180 caps)

Centre-back Sergio Ramos is the most-capped player in Spain’s history, and he averaged a decent scoring record for a defender.

The Real Madrid icon retired from international duty in 2023 after winning three major tournaments during that golden period between 2008 and 2012. Eight of his 23 goals were scored from the penalty spot, and he actually missed four spot kicks which could’ve taken him higher in the list.

9 Alfredo di Stefano 23 goals (31 caps)

Alfredo di Stefano, another Real Madrid legend, also netted 23 goals for his country, but did so in an impressive 31 appearances.

The striker actually represented Argentina and Colombia during his career, and didn’t make his debut for Spain until the age of 31. He won the Ballon d'Or twice in 1957 and 1959, years in which he was scoring regularly for Spain.

8 Emilio Butragueno 26 goals (69 caps)

Forward Emilio Butragueno was actually Spain’s record goalscorer for a number of years, scoring 26 goals over an eight-year international career.

Nicknamed El Buitre, Butragueno, who came through Real Madrid’s academy, represented Spain in two World Cups and two European Championships, but never won a major tournament. He retired from international football in 1992 at the tender age of 29.

7 Fernando Morientes 27 goals (47 caps)

Striker Fernando Morientes made quite an impact on his Spain debut, scoring two goals inside five minutes against Sweden. He then went on to net a brace in his second and third caps against Northern Ireland and Bulgaria, making 1998 his most productive year in front of goal at international level.

The former Real Madrid and Liverpool forward also scored in two major tournaments, falling just shy of 50 caps.

6 Fernando Hierro 29 goals (89 caps)

A defender who could also play as a holding midfielder, Fernando Hierro had a brilliant goal record for his country. Trusted on free kicks and penalties, the Real Madrid icon scored eight of his 29 goals from 12 yards.

He returned to manage Spain in the 2018 World Cup, where they didn’t have as much luck from the spot, with La Roja losing a shootout against Russia in the last 16.

5 Alvaro Morata 34 goals (69 caps)

Alvaro Morata celebrating a goal for Spain.

Current Spain captain Alvaro Morata currently sits in the top five, but may have his eyes on climbing the leaderboard before retiring.

The 31-year-old made his debut back in 2014 and scored seven goals for his country in the years 2016 and 2022. A UEFA Nations League winner, Morata will be hoping to add a European Championship or World Cup winners' medal to his collection as captain.

4 David Silva 35 goals (125 caps)

Known for being a creative attacking midfielder, David Silva also chipped in with an impressive 35 goals in 125 appearances.

In fact, the former Manchester City playmaker scored more goals than he registered assists (32) and played an important role in their two European Championship wins and World Cup triumph.

He retired from international football in 2018 and ended his club career in 2023.

3 Fernando Torres 38 goals (110 caps)

After progressing through Spain’s youth levels at a rapid pace, Fernando Torres made his senior debut as a teenager in 2003 and went on to enjoy a successful international career.

Nicknamed El Nino, Torres played for the likes of Atletico Madrid, Liverpool and Chelsea at club level. He famously scored the winner for Spain and was named Player of the Match in the Euro 2008 final against Germany – the most important of his 38 international goals.

2 Raul 44 goals (102 caps)

After making waves as a teenager at Real Madrid, Raul made his Spain debut at the age of just 19 and went on to become La Roja’s all-time record goalscorer in 2003.

Raul played in five major tournaments but never took home a winners' medal, retiring in 2006 after playing more than 100 games. Unfortunately for him, Spain’s rise was just getting started upon his retirement, which involved a forward who would eventually overtake him at the top of the scoring charts.

1 David Villa 59 goals (98 caps)

Top of the charts is David Villa, who hit his prime in 2008 to help Spain to European Championship glory, years on after taking the famous No 7 shirt from Raul.

He scored 12 goals in 28 games prior to 2008, but Villa would go on to net 39 times over the next four years, also lifting the World Cup in South Africa in 2010. He retired from international football in 2014, but came back out of retirement in 2017 for a 98th cap against Italy.

'Unplayable' MCG pitch was a 'genuine' risk to players

Victoria captain Peter Handscomb admitted his comments about the MCG may have influenced the groundsman

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Dec-2019Both captains agreed that there was a genuine risk that a player could have been seriously injured on the MCG pitch that forced the Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and Western Australia to be abandoned, while Peter Handscomb admitted comments he made last week about needing more life in the surfaces may have influenced the groundsman. The game was suspended on the first afternoon and then called off on Sunday morning after Western Australia’s batsmen were hit repeatedly around the head and chest with deliveries rearing off a length. The pitch had started soft and divots were created, which led to the alarmingly uneven bounce. It is less than three weeks until the Boxing Day Test against New Zealand, which will be played on an adjacent surface.”The game’s been abandoned so it was a pretty genuine risk,” Handscomb said. “The players want to play cricket, that’s why we are here, but player safety is key and that’s where this decision has come from.”Shaun Marsh and Marcus Stoinis, who sustained painful blows to the ribs, underwent concussion tests after the opening day.”It was quite dangerous and as the game went on it got worse,” Marsh said. “As the pitch dried out it became unplayable. My players’ safety is at the forefront of my mind. The right decision has been made and lessons will be learnt.”Following the previous Sheffield Shield match at the ground, against New South Wales, which fizzled out into a draw due to rain over the last two days, Handscomb spoke about the need to bring more life back to the pitches.”[The] MCG pitch hasn’t deteriorated for ten years,” he said. “So I think we need to start making the game accelerate at the start of it, maybe make it a bit greener like it is in Hobart, where the game accelerates at the start and then becomes a good batting wicket. But that’s up to the groundsman and see how they go.”Asked whether those comments played a part in influencing what head groundsman Matt Page produced this weekend, he said: “I think it may have helped him. We’ve had a lot draws at the MCG and it’s about finding a wicket that can get a result. Unfortunately, he’s gone a touch too far and I’m sure come Boxing Day he’ll prepare a beautiful cricket wicket.”Hindsight is a great thing. Unfortunately you can’t change anything that you do. I said stuff, that happens, so be it.”Both Handscomb and Marsh offered their support to Page, who moved to the MCG after being head groundsman at the WACA. “I know Pagey very well. He’s done some really good things since coming here. He was a great groundsman at the WACA,” Handscomb said. “He has a lot of experience behind him and has a lot of time to prepare a wicket that, I think, will produce a good Boxing Day Test.”It’s tough and he’s under the microscope at the moment through the media. He’s a great groundsman, has been for a lot of years, has worked in some different conditions and has done some great things out here.”Marsh added: “He’ll learn from this mistake and I’m sure the wicket for Boxing Day will be good.”While there will be attempts to reschedule the match, with such a packed season – and this being the last round of matches before the BBL – that is likely to prove difficult. If the game isn’t replayed then, under Cricket Australia rules, each side will get three points. Marsh said Western Australia would “let the dust settle” before assessing their options in that scenario.
