Postecoglou breeds positivity at Spurs

Ever since manager Ange Postecoglou's arrival last summer, the north Londoners have undergone a very positive upward trajectory, both on and off the field.

Postecoglou's electric brand of high-pressing, aggressive football has won plenty of admirers as Spurs fiercely contend for a top-four place and subsequent Champions League qualification.

They sit among the English top fight's highest goal-scoring sides, losing just five times so far, and you could argue that a large part of that was down to Postecoglou losing the likes of Micky van de Ven and James Maddison to injury for months.

Pundits like Ian Wright have expressed their surprise at Spurs' sheer transformation under their popular manager, with Tottenham's head-turning form even helping them to beat the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona to January transfer targets.

Radu Dragusin was chased by Thomas Tuchel's side while the La Liga giants had their eyes firmly on young midfielder Lucas Bergvall. However, Spurs eventually beat both in races for each player, with Postecoglou's side hijacking Barca's deal for Bergvall on deadline day.

"It felt better in the stomach. They are both incredible clubs," said Bergvall on why he chose Spurs over Barca.

"It was a very difficult choice, it was 50-50 for a very long time, but it felt like the next step for me was Tottenham. It was not very easy to say no to Barcelona, it took a very long time to decide. It was a tough decision.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou celebrates.

"We talked a little before. In general, how the club works, how they work, how they train, what the days look like. It wasn't a persuasive talk like that. He just said the club was great and I noticed that when I got there. I got an incredible reception, it's a very family club but incredible people."

Currently back out on loan at Djurgardens IF, the 18-year-old will link up with Spurs properly in the summer.

Tottenham map out first team Bergvall plan

Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey have an update on the youngster and how he could be utilised in north London.

Indeed, it is believed Tottenham are planning to integrate Bergvall straight into Postecoglou's first team later this year, and those within Spurs view him as a "generational talent".

The Swede penned a five-year deal worth around £8.5 million in the winter window, yet despite his tender age, there is a belief at the club that he's more-than capable of being thrusted straight into senior action.

Club preparing to lose £100m defender as Tottenham push for his signing

A club are preparing to lose one of their star players this summer, as Tottenham allegedly push to sign him for manager Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs compiling summer transfer shortlist

Ever since the January window's end, reports have suggested that Spurs are already in full preparation for the summer.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 6, 2024

Reliable media sources claim that Postecoglou's side are keen to sign a winger as their "major" summer capture (Miguel Delaney), while others believe that a new striker to replace Harry Kane could be in the offing as well.

It appears the wider recruitment team, lead by technical director Johan Lange and chief football officer Scott Munn, are working on the possibility of bringing in fresh attacking options after a positive debut season for Postecoglou as head coach.

However, there are also suggestions that Spurs could look to bring in another centre-back this summer. Indeed, the north Londoners are apparently keen to reinforce their back line further after the signing of Radu Dragusin from Genoa in January.

They apparently intend to sign two "top-level" centre-backs this year, and with Dragusin out the way, they want to bring in another.

"The situation hasn't changed, and Tottenham have always intended to sign two top-level centre-backs across 2024," said journalist Dean Jones to GiveMeSport last month.

"They’ve got one through the door, and now, in the summer window, the plan is to go after another. Calafiori and Morato might be mentioned now, but the net is being cast wider than that. They’ve got some interesting options opening up to them. Still, from what I understand, they’re not committing at this stage, even though they want to make early moves in the summer transfer window similar to how they did in the winter market.”

There have been a fair few defensive aces linked in this regard, and one who keeps on being mentioned is Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite.

The Englishman is a fixture in Sean Dyche's elevens, week in and week out – playing a key role for Everton in their battle to avoid relegation.

He's started 24 Premier League matches as a mainstay for the Toffees since returning from a productive loan spell at PSV Eindhoven last year, and this has enticed interest from Spurs. The Daily Mail recently claimed that Tottenham are pushing hard to sign Branthwaite, and making a "concerted effort" ahead of the summer.

Everton "preparing to lose" Branthwaite

Sharing an update, The Mirror have a small line claiming Everton are "preparing to lose" Branthwaite this summer amid interest from Spurs and Man United.

They're even eyeing a potential replacement for the star who Jamie Carragher called "special", with Hull City ace Jacob Greaves on their radar. However, according to inews, the Lilywhites may have to pay a pretty penny for Branthwaite – who the Merseysiders value at around £100 million.

West Ham could let one of their highest-profile players leave with Paqueta

Another one of David Moyes' crop could "become one of the highest-profile players to quit West Ham" in the summer alongside the exit links surrounding Lucas Paqueta.

Clubs circle Paqueta for summer 2024 transfer

According to recent reports, Paqueta may well follow former captain Declan Rice out the door later this year as another marquee West Ham sale becomes more and more possible.

The Brazilian is currently subject to an investigation around gambling breaches, but once that clears, it is believed the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Man City have all made it clear they're interested in Paqueta (Claret & Hugh).

Last year, Man City were attempting to sign West Ham's star player but ultimately pulled the plug when he was accused of his betting charges.

"Following the recent betting-related allegations made against Lucas Paqueta, Manchester City are now internally discussing the Brazilian’s potential transfer," Fabrizio Romano wrote in his CaughtOffside substack last summer.

"The deal between Manchester City and West Ham is currently off. We can say that is 99% collapsed and we’re just waiting for the final communication, but this is the feeling. The situation is very clear."

City could be back in again for Paqueta later this year, alongside other big English clubs, but he isn't the only West Ham mainstay who could well depart this year.

High profile exit could follow Paqueta

According to journalist Pete O'Rourke, writing for Football Insider, that player may be defender Nayef Aguerd. The Morocco international, who's started 19 league games this season, is subject to interest from Saudi Arabia and it is believed his departure from Rush Green is a distinct possibility this summer.

Aguerd could be one of the "highest profile players" to leave West Ham, according to O'Rourke, and it is something the club could green-light despite "extensive speculation" surrounding Kurt Zouma's future as well.

The 27-year-old, who went to AFCON mid-season, has made some defensive errors in big games this season but was praised as one of the "best defenders in Europe" by former teammate Achraf Sidki.

“West Ham have signed one of the best defenders in Europe,” Sidki told The Athletic. “I’m so proud that one of my former teammates will be playing in the Premier League. I’m surprised he didn’t move to England sooner. When we were younger we both had big dreams of becoming professional footballers. Nayef has done well, and I’m confident he will be a great signing for West Ham."

It is unclear yet as to how much West Ham will demand for the North African's services, or if they have a replacement plan, but this could be one to watch.

Sunderland blundered with £9m signing who’s now worth less than Burstow

Sunderland will take this International break as an opportunity to regroup and refresh on the training ground, with Mike Dodds' dire Black Cats winless in their last seven Championship games.

The loss of their main attacking spark in Jack Clarke to the Stadium of Light treatment room has really hurt the Wearside outfit, who now find themselves in mid-table obscurity off the back of this poor run of games when talk of promotion was once potentially on the cards.

The lack of potent strikers has also really killed Sunderland throughout the season as a whole, especially the continued blanks being fired by Chelsea loanee Mason Burstow up top.

Mason Burstow.

Yet, even as Burstow manages to remain wasteful in Sunderland red and white with just one goal from his stint to date, one former £9m Black Cats buy now finds himself worth less than the 20-year-old flop.

Wahbi Khazri's time at Sunderland

Purchased for a bumper £9m by legendary Dutch manager Dick Advocaat, Wahbi Khazri would never quite acclimatise to this new English surroundings when relocating to Sunderland in 2015.

The 74-time Tunisia international would demand such a fee off the back of his exploits in France, where the ex-Black Cats man would muster up 30 goals and assists across just two seasons at FC Girordins Bordeaux.

Sunderland fans would never quite see this same magic unfold when Khazri pulled on a Black Cats strip, however, with the now 33-year-old attacking midfielder only managing three goals and two assists from 42 games.

This would result in the Wearside club taking a sizeable financial hit when offloading their ex-number ten in 2018 to Saint-Etienne – offloading their former £9m buy for an initial £6m to the Ligue 1 side five years ago.

It would go down as an underwhelming capture, with the current Montpellier man never quite able to regularly dazzle the Sunderland masses like he did with a wonderful strike against Chelsea during his first season.

Looking at Khazri's transfer value now, the decision to splash the cash looks even more of a waste of money with the 33-year-old midfielder worth less than Burstow playing in Ligue 1 towards the back-end of his career according to Football Transfers.

What Wahbi Khazri is doing in 2024

The 5 foot 9 creator's transfer value is now all the way down at €1.4m (£1.2m) in 2024, a far cry away from the bumped-up figure Sunderland once paid to land his services.

It's a massive decline from the amount Saint-Etienne even paid to land Khazri after his lacklustre time at the Stadium of Light, with the one-time Black Cats dud remarkably now coming in as being cheaper than Burstow – who is estimated to be worth €1.7m (£1.4m) – despite the loanee's torrid loan switch to date.

Khazri hasn't helped matters by being largely anonymous this campaign for his French employers, only tallying up a single goal and assist from 24 games in total.

His dire showing against the might of PSG last match showcased Khazri's career ending with a whimper playing for Montpellier, managing just 18 touches in total against the reigning French champions before being hauled off after 59 minutes. Still, he isn't the first to find life a little tricky against the Parisian outfit.

At least, in the case of Burstow, Sunderland can move on knowing the Blues loanee didn't significantly dent their bank account when he returns to Stamford Bridge at the end of this disappointing season.

Whereas, when you see how much Khazri's transfer value has tumbled, the Black Cats must still regret forking out the amount they did to land the dud during the height of their Premier League days before their notable demise occurred down the divisions.

All 20 Premier League Clubs’ Best Chants & Lyrics

The Premier League is filled with clubs of many different shapes and sizes, but one thing that all 20 teams share is a passion for the game and a real desire to get behind their team, win, lose or draw.

Every club in the top flight has that one song that fans associate with them, from You'll Never Walk Alone for Liverpool to Hi Ho Wolverhampton at Molineux, it really is special.

With that in mind, Football FanCast has created a list featuring the main chant or song for every Premier League club, complete with lyrics.

Arsenal

North London Forever

Lyrics: "North London forever,

Whatever the weather,

These streets are our own,

And my heart will leave you never,

My blood will forever,

Run through the stone…"

We're kicking off our list with a chant that booms around the Emirates every matchday.

With the impressive performances on the field this season and the Premier League title well within reach, you can bet that the Arsenal fans will sing this one just that little bit louder from here on in. Taken from Louis Dunford's 'The Angel', Gunners supporters have been belting this anthem out since last season.

Aston Villa

Hi Ho Aston Villa

Lyrics (to the tune of Hi Ho Silver Lining): "You're everywhere and nowhere, baby

That's where you're at

You're rollin' down a bumpy hillside

In your hippy hat

"You're flying across the country

And getting fat

You're saying everything is groovy

When your tyres are flat

"And it's Hi Ho Aston Villa!

Anywhere you go, baby

I see your sun is shining

But I won't make a fuss

Though it's obvious…"

This is one that perhaps won't go down well with bitter rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, as both clubs' pre-match and post-match rituals involve singing this at the top of your lungs.

Both sets of fans will argue over who sang it first, but no one really knows the answer.

Bournemouth

Boscombe, Back of the Net

Lyrics: "Boscombe,

(Back of the net),

Boscombe,

(Back of the net)…"

Bournemouth aren't exactly blessed with a huge amount of iconic chants, but this song has been around for a long time and is one that the more hardcore fans will recognise and appreciate.

Brentford

Hey Jude

Lyrics: "Brentford

Don't make it bad,

Take a sad song and make it better,

Remember to let her into your heart

Then you will start to make it better, better, better, better, ooh.

Na na na,

Na na na na!

Na na na na!

Brentford,

Na na na,

Na na na na!

Na na na na!

Brentford…"

This is, of course, a popular song that was originally sung by The Beatles.

If you ever rock up to the Gtech Community Stadium, you'll be sure to hear this bellowing out before and after matches, win, lose or draw.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Sussex By The Sea

Lyrics: "Now is the time for marching, now let your hearts be gay,

Hark to the merry bugles sounding along our way.

So let your voices ring, my boys, and take the time from me,

And I’ll sing you a song as we march along,

Of Sussex by the Sea!

Good old Sussex by the Sea!

Good old Sussex by the Sea!

You may tell them all we stand or fall,

For Sussex by the Sea."

Many football fans perhaps won't look at Brighton as a fanbase with that much passion and aggressiveness, but if you've ever experienced this being bellowed out by 30,000 Seagulls fans prior to kick-off, you may just feel on edge.

Burnley

The Burnley Aces

Lyrics: "Oh my lads, you should have seen 'em running,

Running down the Brunshaw road the Burnley boys are coming,

All the lads and lasses, smiles upon their faces,

Running down the Brunshaw road,

To see the Burnley Aces…"

Now, this is a song that's iconic among quite a few fan bases, with each having their own rendition.

However, with Burnley, it can be heard home and away, and fits ever so well with the Brunshaw Road.

Chelsea

Blue Is The Colour

Lyrics: "Blue is the colour, football is the game

We're all together, and winning is our aim

So cheer us on through the sun and rain

'Cause Chelsea, Chelsea is our name

Here at the Bridge whether rain or fine

We can shine all the time

Home or away, come and see us play

You're welcome any day…"

This is one of the more iconic songs in the list, and matchdays at Stamford Bridge just wouldn't be the same without it.

Although results haven't exactly gone in favour of the Blues at times in the current campaign, as a player, if you're hearing this as you await kick-off, it'll be sure to get you right up for it.

Crystal Palace

Glad All Over

Lyrics: "You say that you love me,

(Say that you love me),

All of the time,

(All of the time),

You say that you need me,

(Say that you need me),

You'll always be mine,

(Always be mine),

And I'm feeling, glad all over,

Yes I'm, glad all over,

Baby I'm, glad all over,

So glad you're mine."

Palace fans have been belting out Beatles hit Glad All Over since the late 60s, when it was performed by The Dave Clark Five – who wrote the song – at Selhurst Park. Now a tradition in south London, it has become a staple of the matchday experience.

Everton

Spirit of the Blues

Lyrics: "It’s good news for the blues,

And there’s no more time to lose,

Cos we’re hot on the trail,

And there’s no way we’re gonna fail,

So get your coat on and get moving,

Cos we don’t know the meaning of losing,

So come on come on,

Get down to Goodison Park,

Wooooo.

Everton, we never shone so brightly,

Everton, the spirit of the blues,

Everton, we never shone so brightly,

Everton, the spirit of the blues…"

As far as classic Everton songs go, there aren't many better than the Spirit of the Blues. Kenny Parry wrote the hit 38 years ago with Billy Kinsley in just one sitting.

Fulham

We Are Fulham

Lyrics: "We are Fulham,

We are Fulham,

We are Fulham, FFC,

We are Fulham,

Super Fulham,

We are Fulham,

F*** Chelsea!"

Fulham aren't known for their wide array of chants, but this one is simple but effective, with a bit of vulgarity in there for good measure, so parental discretion is advised.

Failure to report several approaches from Deepak Aggarwal, an alleged corruptor who was seeking inside information, is why Shakib, Bangladesh’s Test and T20I captain, was banned by the ICC’s anti-corruption unit on Tuesday. We don’t know yet why Shakib, the game’s premier allrounder (he is ranked third in Tests, first in ODIs and second in T20Is in the ICC’s player rankings), failed to report the approaches to the ACU, especially as he has previously reported corrupt approaches. But we do know a little about the conversations with Aggarwal that led to this sanction.November 2017According to information made public by the ICC, the first time Aggarwal got in touch with Shakib was in November 2017 during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), where he was playing for Dhaka Dynamites. Shakib’s contact, the ICC said, was provided to Aggarwal by “another person” who was close to the player. Aggarwal had asked this unnamed person to “provide” him with contacts for players in the tournament.Over the course of several WhatsApp messages, Aggarwal tried to arrange a meeting with Shakib.January 2018Bangladesh hosted an ODI tri-series with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. On January 19, Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka and Shakib was Man of the Match. Aggarwal “congratulated” Shakib on his performance and then followed it with a cryptic message that raised eyebrows at the ACU. “Mr Aggarwal followed this message with a message saying “do we work in this or I wait til the IPL”,” the ICC said in a statement. “The reference to in this message was a reference to him [Shakib] providing Inside Information to Mr Aggarwal.”Shakib didn’t report this approach either to the ACU, or to any other relevant authority.Four days later, Aggarwal sent another message, a more explicit one, to Shakib: “Bro anything in this series?” Once again, Shakib opted not to report the approach to the ACU or even the BCB.April 2018On April 26, during IPL 2018, Sunrisers Hyderabad – Shakib’s franchise – were playing a home match against Kings XI Punjab. Aggarwal messaged Shakib on the day of the match, and it was during this conversation that Shakib eventually said he wanted to meet Aggarwal.”He received a WhatsApp message from Mr Aggarwal that day asking him whether a particular player was going to be playing in the game that day, i.e. again asking for Inside Information,” the ICC statement said. “Mr Aggarwal continued this conversation with him by talking about bitcoins, dollar accounts and asked him for his dollar account details. During this conversation, he told Mr Aggarwal that he wanted to meet him .”Shakib admitted to the ACU later that he had deleted several other messages from this April 26 WhatsApp conversation. It was then that Shakib grew concerned. However, once again, he did not report the approach.”He confirmed that he had concerns over Mr Aggarwal, feeling he was a bit , and that, following their conversations, he had the feeling that Mr Aggarwal was a bookie,” the ICC statement said. The ACU officers interviewed Shakib in person in Bangladesh twice this year – on January 23 and then on August 27.Shakib readily accepted the charges.”During these interviews, Mr Al Hasan was cautioned that the answers and information provided by him could be used as evidence to support a charge or charges in relation to a breach of the Code, if they revealed that Mr Al Hasan might have breached the Code, either by acting corruptly himself or by failing to report corrupt approaches or corrupt actions by others. After receiving these cautions, Mr Al Hasan admitted various failures to report approaches made to him to provide Inside Information to Mr Aggarwal.”
