Newcastle linked to Calvert-Lewin

Everton are set to face a battle to keep star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the club over the coming months after Newcastle United reportedly joined the race for his signature.

What’s the story?

The Magpies have joined football’s financial elite after their Saudi-backed takeover was eventually ratified by the Premier League, and Calvert-Lewin is believed to be high up on their wish list, according to The Telegraph.

“Dominic Calvert-Lewin is on the list of Newcastle United’s potential targets under their new Saudi Arabian ownership. The Everton striker, 24, is being monitored by several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, whose new wealth from the Public Investment Fund (PIF) will make them major players in future windows,” the report states.

“Calvert-Lewin is highly regarded by the current recruitment team at Newcastle and would be expected to remain a player of interest even with a potential change of technical staff behind the scenes as PIF start their new era at the club.”

Previous speculation claimed both Arsenal and Real Madrid are also interested in securing the 24-year-old’s services, meaning a bidding war could be on the cards either in January or the following summer.

Everton fans will be concerned

The £40.5m-rated forward only signed a new five-year contract with the Merseyside outfit in March 2020, but the club’s supporters will still be concerned over their talisman’s future.

Spearheading the attack for a new superpower such as Newcastle could be a very attractive proposition for Calvert-Lewin, and he may be tempted to depart the Blues in search of pastures new should an acceptable offer come in.

His exit would be a major blow to any ambitions new manager Rafa Benitez has, given his importance to the side, and replacing his work ethic and goal contribution would be far from an easy task for the Spanish tactician.

Over the last couple of campaigns, Calvert-Lewin has become a key figure to Everton, scoring 39 goals in 83 appearances in all competitions since the beginning of 2019/20, more than any of his teammates.

As a result, the continued speculation regarding the England international’s potential departure will be of growing concern to everyone associated with Everton, and the club’s chiefs, manager and fans alike will be hoping he stays loyal for the foreseeable future.

Doctrove the mannequin sparks into life

Alex Brown presents the plays from the fourth day at Cardiff

Alex Brown at Cardiff11-Jul-2009Shot of the dayBrad Haddin’s slog-sweep over the midwicket fence was as poignant as it was powerful. His towering six off Monty Panesar propelled Australia past the 600-run mark, and took his sixth-wicket partnership with Marcus North to 150. By innings’ end, Australia had advanced their total to 674 for five – the fifth highest in Ashes history, and the most by an Australian batting line-up since 1934. Haddin and North’s stand was finally broken when the former batsman holed out to Ravi Bopara off the bowling of Paul Collingwood, but not before their partnership had yielded an even 200 runs – the highest ever sixth-wicket stand by an Australian pair in England.Stat of the dayAs if the aforementioned feats weren’t enough, Ricky Ponting’s men also made history by becoming the first Australian team with four centurions in a single Ashes innings. Simon Katich (122), Ponting (150), North (125 not out) and Haddin (121) gave their English counterparts a lesson in will and persistence over 181 obdurate overs. What the … of the dayBilly Doctrove has played the role of mannequin for most of this Test, “not-outting” appeals and referring decisions to the third umpire, but the Dominican official sprung to life late on day four. Unfortunately for Doctrove, who had previously spared Kevin Pietersen and Simon Katich despite the weight of evidence suggesting both were out, the awakening involved an incorrect lbw decision against Bopara when struck too high on the pad by Ben Hilfenhaus. Sophia Gardens echoed with howls of indignation afterwards as England lost its second wicket of the afternoon.Outfit of the dayThe dozen fully-kitted Spidermen, one of them inflatable, had the early running over a foursome bearing masks featuring the visages of The Queen, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. But all were blown out of the water by a small troupe of touring Australians bearing t-shirts emblazoned with the mugshot of a man notable for his 21 first class games for NSW, and his occasional role as frontman in Brett Lee’s band, Six and Out. Celtic: Southampton want Furuhashi

An update has emerged on Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi, regarding his future at Parkhead.

What’s the talk?

According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, the Hoops could be in danger of losing Furuhashi with Southampton eyeing up a potential swoop.

The Japan international joined the Hoops from Vissel Kobe in the summer and is now said to be attracting interest from elsewhere after an impressive start to life in Scotland.

Van Dijk 2.0

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou could be set to repeat a mistake made by his predecessors at the club with this interest from Southampton in Furuhashi.

The fans would surely be fuming if one of the club’s best players is sold within months of him arriving in Scotland if the Saints attempt to land him in the January transfer window.

Supporters will also remember what happened one of the last times Celtic sold one of their stars to the south coast. Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk left to join the Saints for £13m in the summer of 2015 before going on to sign for Liverpool for £75m less than three years later.

This suggests that the Hoops could have secured more money for his services had they managed to keep hold of him for another year or two. Southampton made a gigantic profit on the defender, whilst Celtic had to watch on from afar as he became the world’s most expensive centre-back in 2019.

Postecoglou must now avoid a similar nightmare scenario with Kyogo in the next window. He has had a sublime start to his career at Celtic and quickly established himself as a key player, with eight goals and one assist in 11 matches to date.

Ex-Celtic striker John Hartson hailed him earlier this season and claimed he could aid their title challenge. He told The Sunday Post [05/09 print edition, via 67HailHail]:

“There is no doubt Celtic have landed someone quite special in Kyogo. His movement is outstanding.

“It was a pity he couldn’t get more involved against Rangers, but when he moved into the central role, he was an absolute menace to their defence.

“Having him gives Celtic a real chance of winning the league this season.

This highlights the immediate impact he has had on the side since his arrival in the summer. It also illustrates why supporters will be fuming if he is sold to Southampton in January, particularly if it is a similar fee to the £14m they received for van Dijk. It could be another horror show for Celtic where they watch him move on from St. Mary’s for five or six times more money later down the line.

Therefore, Postecoglou must plead with the board to keep hold of the forward in the upcoming transfer window in order to maintain the strength of his squad and avoid a repeat van Dijk situation.

Celtic: Devlin makes McKay claim on Harkin move

Celtic reporter Kieran Devlin has addressed the reason behind Fergal Harkin’s collapsed move to Parkhead over the summer.

The Lowdown: Harkin links

Harkin, a ‘massive’ Hoops fan, appeared to be closing in on a move to Glasgow towards the end of May.

The Irishman rejected the chance to move to Belgium in favour of a move to Scotland, however, a deal ended up falling through.

It now appears as if Dominic McKay, who left the club last month after just 72 days as CEO, played a role in a director of football deal collapsing.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-15/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Devlin’s claim

Devlin shared an in-depth feature on The Athletic focusing on former Hoops scout John Park on Thursday.

Within his report, Devlin, who touched on Harkin to Celtic following McKay’s exit, looked at that the pros and cons of a director of football model alongside a traditional head of recruitment set-up.

He claimed that Celtic were on the cusp of appointing Harkin as sporting director before a disagreement between McKay and the Hoops hierarchy led to a deal collapsing.

The Verdict: Back to square one…

The Hoops at one point earlier this year had McKay in as CEO and were linked with moves for Harkin as DoF and Eddie Howe as manager.

They now have none of three names mentioned at Parkhead, with Michael Nicholson the club’s interim CEO alongside manager Ange Postecoglou.

It would’ve been interesting to have seen which direction the club went if they secured Harkin’s services, but now they are back to square one without a permanent CEO or DoF in place.

West maul East to take title

The batting might of West Zone helped them crush East Zone by 218 runs in Cuttack and pocket their ninth Deodhar Trophy. It completes a triumphant season for Wasim Jaffer, who had also led West to the Duleep Trophy, besides winning the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai.Such a huge defeat didn’t look on the cards for East when their new-ball bowlers got rid of the prolific Ajinkya Rahane and Parthiv Patel to reduce West to 40 for 2 after 8.1 overs. Jaffer was dropped by the wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha in the next over on 16, and he got another life when Dhiraj Goswami grassed a caught-and-bowled chance when on 49. Still, when West slipped to 85 for 3 in the 17th over after Rakesh Solanki was run out, the game was evenly balanced. It was all one-way traffic after that, though. Jaffer and Cheteshwar Pujara, two of the highest run-getters of the season, put on a brisk 158-run stand to give West the upper hand. Fifteen boundaries and a six helped Jaffer along to his sixth List A century, but Pujara fell six runs short of a hundred. Both men were dismissed in the space of 15 balls, but there was no easing up of the scoring-rate.Ravindra Jadeja, fresh from his stint with the national team, and the big-hitting Abhishek Nayar tore into the East attack to plunder 113 runs off the last ten overs. Jadeja slammed five fours and four sixes in a 30-ball 61 and Nayar needed only 25 deliveries for his 54.East had opted to go with an additional batsman, picking Halhaldar Das instead of the left-arm spinner Tushar Saha, and the strategy backfired, with 105 runs coming off part-timers Manoj Tiwary and Deepak Sharma’s 11 overs.Faced with a massive target, East’s chances became bleaker when medium-pacers Siddharth Trivedi and Jayesh Odedra got three early wickets. Worse was to follow as captain Tiwary and the in-form Ishank Jaggi fell within the space of five balls; East were soon at 49 for 6. There was some brief resistance from tailenders Rakesh Mohanty and Goswami but not enough to worry West. The victory was confirmed when Jadeja took two wickets in four deliveries to bundle East out for 144.

Massimo Luongo linked with Sheff Wed exit

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Massimo Luongo could return to Australia, with Perth Glory reportedly interested in making a move for him.

The Lowdown: Luongo impresses for Owls

The 28-year-old has been an impressive performer at times for the Owls, scoring three goals in 45 appearances. and boasting impressive averages of 2.4 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game in the Championship last season.

Luongo has lacked consistency though and is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, meaning he is set to miss a chunk of Wednesday’s League One campaign.

The Latest: Midfielder linked with exit

According to The Sheffield Star, Darren Moore could actually lose his midfielder for good, with Perth eyeing up a permanent move for him.

The A-League side are thought to be keen on bringing Luongo back to his homeland, with over a month of the Australian transfer window still remaining.

Luongo’s current Owls deal expires next summer, leaving his future up in the air.

The Verdict: Big potential loss?

Luongo would be a big loss if he moved on this summer, even though his injury problems have held him back at times at Hillsborough.

The tenacity and energy he provides in midfield could be too good for some League One opponents – he has won 43 caps for Australia, which speaks volumes – and he is an ideal foil for the more attack-minded Barry Bannan.

The hope may be that Luongo stays put at Wednesday and ends up signing a new contract, but cashing in now is a more viable option than losing him for free next year.

Yovich and Aldridge take Northern Districts to title

Joseph Yovich and Graeme Aldridge led table-toppers Northern Districts to their fifth State Shield title in 14 years – their first since 2004-05. A splendid all-round effort from former New Zealand medium-pacer Ian Butler failed to avoid defeat for defending champions Otago, who fell 49 short replying to Northern Districts’ 238 for 9.Put in on a sluggish Seddon Park pitch, Northern Districts lost wickets regularly, and had lost half their side for 95 in 25.4 overs. BJ Watling’s 28 was the highest score among the top six batsmen. Yovich’s aggression, though, bailed his team out. He smashed six fours and three sixes in an unbeaten 76-ball 78 and ensured Northern Districts played out 50 overs. Aldridge contributed a 39-ball 36 to a 64-run stand for the eighth wicket with Yovich. Butler took 5 for 55 off his ten overs.Otago, who were without captain Craig Cumming, Brendon McCullum and Neil Broom, all away on national duty, never seemed in the hunt during their chase. Aldridge struck twice to reduce Otago to 31 for 3, and although they recovered to 123 for 5 thanks to contributions from Aaron Redmond, Sean Eathorne and Nathan McCullum, the asking-rate continued to escalate. That was mainly due to an uncharacteristic 70-ball 17 from Dimitri Mascarenhas. The scoring was choked by economical ten-over spells from Bruce Martin and Kane Williamson, both of whom conceded only 23 runs.Aldridge then struck thrice in eight deliveries to reduce Otago to 132 for 8. Butler replied with a brisk 44 off 23 balls but was dismissed soon before the innings folded for 189 in 45.4 overs. Aldridge finished with 5 for 39 in nine overs and his all-round display made him the Player of the Match.

Newcastle interested in Jed Wallace

Newcastle United are interested in signing Millwall star Jed Wallace amid his contract uncertainty with the Championship club.

What’s the story?

According to Football League World, the Magpies are among a number of clubs interested in signing the attacking midfielder in January, with his contract set to expire at The Den in the summer.

The report adds that a new contract offer is on the table for the 27-year-old, although there is an intense battle to land his signature, with Newcastle joined by the likes of West Ham, Crystal Palace and Brentford among others in being interested in him.

He’s better than Almiron

In Wallace, Steve Bruce could sign a goal-scoring midfielder who also has the creativity to set up his teammates – essentially everything the Magpies probably thought they were getting when they signed Miguel Almiron.

The Paraguay international has flattered to deceive at St James’ Park, and that hasn’t been for a case of not trying. The former Atlanta United ace has managed just 13 goals in 95 games for the club, and only provided a further five assists – a paltry record for someone who either plays off the striker or out wide for the majority of the time.

While of course playing in a division lower, Wallace has proven himself to be a much bigger goal threat. Already this season he has bagged three goals and one assist in just five Championship games, while the previous campaign saw him rack up ten goals and seven assists in the league alone.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett has previously dubbed his talisman as being “instrumental”, saying: “It seems Jed Wallace is instrumental in everything we achieve at the moment. His recent stats are unbelievable.”

Speaking after an inspired performance against Blackpool, the Lions boss added: “Jed once again – I’ve spoked there to Jed and Muzza and said after the last two games I’m just going to go and try and sign anyone called Wallace in the last three days, anybody, doesn’t matter – because certainly Jed today was a game changer. It’s simple.

“You look to your big players to come up with those moments and he’s done it so often. It’s a wonderful, wonderful free-kick. Under pressure.”

As per WhoScored, Wallace averages more shots, key passes and dribbles per game than the Newcastle man both this season and last, and given that he’s actually just a month older than Almiron – both of them are 27 – he could come in and hit the ground running at St James’ Park.

The Magpies must surely be all over a move for the £6.3m-rated Wallace.

Meanwhile, this might be Mike Ashley’s only Newcastle masterclass…

SAFC dealt major Jebbison transfer blow

Sunderland have been dealt a major blow in their bid to bring Daniel Jebbison to the Stadium of Light this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Sunderland Echo, who claim that, despite the Black Cats attempting to sign the Sheffield United centre-forward for the majority of the summer transfer window, there seems to be no resolution in sight regarding a deal for the 18-year-old.

The report goes on to state that Burton Albion and Doncaster Rovers are also interested in the England U18 international, however, as a result of the loan fee the Blades are demanding in order to sanction the temporary departure of the striker, it appears unlikely that Jebbison will be making a move to any League One side this summer.

Louis-Dreyfus will be fuming

Considering just how close it appeared Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and his transfer team were to getting a deal over the line for Jebbison only a matter of weeks ago, with the centre-forward having been in attendance for the club’s pre-season friendly against Hull City, the fact that a move now looks to be increasingly unlikely is sure to have the Sunderland chairman fuming.

Despite the fact that the Black Cats recently secured the loan signing of Nathan Broadhead, the 18-year-old Blades striker would nevertheless still have been a fantastic addition for the Mackems to make before transfer deadline day.

Having scored the winner in United’s 1-0 victory over Everton last season – a goal that saw the £900k-rated man become the youngest-ever player to score on their first Premier League start – it was reported that Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and Chelsea were all interested in a summer move for the £145-per-week hitman.

As such, it would be an extremely difficult argument to make that the player Micah Richards dubbed a “fantastic” talent would not have been a major coup for Sunderland.

However, it now appears as if Louis-Dreyfus will have to turn his attention elsewhere in the summer transfer window if he is still keen to bring in further attacking additions to Lee Johnson’s side before the end of the month.
