James Tavernier: Everton interested in Rangers’ “remarkable” right-back

Farhad Moshiri must sanction a January swoop for Everton to sign Rangers full-back James Tavernier amid rumours of interest at Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffees are one of several Premier League clubs considering a move to bring Tavernier back south of the border with his Gers contract set to expire in 18-months’ time.

The Ibrox natives have been quick to dismiss approaches in the past, yet are braced for a major battle to retain the full-back this winter following his sublime start to the season that has helped Steven Gerrard to clinch a commanding lead in the Premiership standings.

Rangers sit 13 points above bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic having won 14 of their opening 16 fixtures, helped heavily through Tavernier’s incredible return of 10 goals and seven assists.

No Gers player has scored more often or assisted a higher number of league goals than the 29-year-old, now said to be a mid-season target for London trio West Ham United, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur, plus Everton and his boyhood side Newcastle.

Gerrard has been full of praise for his captain’s efforts at Ibrox, describing Tavernier as an aggressive all-rounder performing at the same level as he saw in his former England teammates Kyle Walker and Glen Johnson.

“It’s top-level stuff,” Gerrard said. “I have played with some fantastic attacking right-backs, Kyle Walker, Glen Johnson, Steve Finnan to name a few. Tav is right up there.

“The pleasing thing for me is he is still contributing to the other side of the game. He’s pressing, he’s aggressive, he’s winning his duels, stopping crosses. Our clean sheet record, to me, is just as important as James’ other numbers. Where he is right now, he needs to bottle it and stay there for as long as he can because he’s in fantastic form.”

Should Everton sign Tavernier?

If Everton’s interest in Tavernier is true, Moshiri must see a reason to sanction his Director of Football Marcel Brands striking a deal with Rangers, as the 29-year-old’s form would serve as the perfect mid-season injection Ancelotti needs while facing a crisis at right-back.

Jonjoe Kenny’s Goodison Park future will surely be enshrouded in doubt with Ancelotti favouring midfielders Tom Davies and Alex Iwobi to slot in at right-back while without the injured Seamus Coleman, who has been plagued by hamstring problems this season.

Former Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan expects Tavernier to be on the market at a bargain fee, too, telling Football Insider: “There was talk of a £7m bid before. There will be teams looking at him in January because he is the modern-day wing-back who ticks every single box.”

Rangers’ legendary head coach Walter Smith also lauds Tavernier for “doing a remarkable job” at Ibrox, where the defender boasts 16 goals and 11 assists across all competitions after 25 appearances so far this season.

Tavernier’s influence stretches beyond his goal involvement and role in 13 Premiership clean sheets, as well, with the 5 ft 9 gem taking 94.9 touches per league game this season, alongside delivering 2.4 accurate crosses, winning 5.8 duels, making 2.2 successful tackles, 1.2 clearances, 1.1 interceptions and taking 1.8 shots, per SofaScore.

His form and Everton’s need for depth at right-back this winter is all the reason Moshiri needs to sanction a mid-season splurge, after Carlton Palmer exclusively told Football FanCast he expects the Toffees’ majority owner to block Ancelotti from making any signings.

AND in other news, Marcel Brands can land Everton’s new Idrissa Gueye in a £22.8m leader the Toffees’ are monitoring.

Newcastle outcast Christian Atsu has been bleeding Mike Ashley dry

After arriving in a £6m deal from Chelsea in the summer of 2017, it’s fair to say things haven’t quite worked out for Christian Atsu at Newcastle.

The versatile midfielder had spent the previous campaign on loan at the Magpies, impressing Rafa Benitez enough to try and get a permanent deal over the line, with the then Newcastle boss raving about the fact they eventually got their man.

He said: “We are happy to sign a good player. He’s shown us that he’s a good professional and someone who is very keen to learn and improve.  Christian has been a key part of our promotion campaign and he wants to help us to build something for the future.”

Fast forward a few years later however, and Atsu is barely getting a look-in at St James’ Park, a mere after-thought. So much so that his only appearance in a Newcastle shirt this season has been a ten-minute outing in the Carabao Cup against Blackburn Rovers in the second round – other than that, he hasn’t even made a single match-day squad.

The Ghana international enjoyed his best time on Tyneside under Benitez, scoring eight goals and providing five assists, but current boss Steve Bruce has made his feelings clear about him.

Speaking earlier in September, he said: “I like Christian – the same goes for (Yoshinori) Muto – trains every day, works tirelessly, (and is) a good professional. But in a situation where, are they going to play enough? There has to come a time when they go and play football.”

Atsu failed to get a move away from St James’ Park however, and whilst his contract is coming to an end when the season finishes, he will still have cost the club some big-money.

In fact, coupled with his transfer fee and wages, the Ghanaian will have cost Newcastle £11.5m since arriving. A complete waste of resources on a player who just hasn’t hit the heights.

Southampton missed out on signing Milot Rashica

Southampton were linked with a move for Milot Rashica over the summer and the Saints look to have missed out on a real gem of a winger.

The Kosovan international was linked with the likes of Southampton and Liverpool during the summer but ended up staying with Werder Bremen.

Since joining the Bundesliga outfit from Vitesse in 2018, the winger has gone on to make 77 appearances for Die Werderaner, in which he has contributed an impressive 24 goals and 14 assists (per Transfermarkt).

It was no surprise that the 24-year-old was linked with a summer exit after Bremen’s disappointing Bundesliga season, in which they only avoided relegation by beating second division side Heidenheim on away goals in their playoff game.

They have enjoyed a much more solid start to the 2020/21 campaign, as they currently sit ninth in the Bundesliga table, although Rashica himself has barely featured, having struggled with knee problems at the start of the season.

The winger, who was likened to Real Madrid winger Eden Hazard in a scout report written by HITC, has enjoyed fruitful campaigns in the past two seasons; contributing eight goals and five assists in 28 appearances last season (per WhoScored).

The season before was arguably even more impressive for Rashica, as he grabbed nine goals and five assists in 26 Bundesliga appearances, which earned him an impressive 6.98 average rating (per WhoScored).

He certainly seems to have a similar play-style to the former Chelsea man, with WhoScored suggesting that the Kosovan likes to dribble, cut inside and counter-attack.

Considering the poor form of Southampton’s wingers so far this season, with Nathan Redmond having failed to contribute a goal or an assist thus far, whilst Moussa Djenepo’s average rating of 6.75 isn’t exactly groundbreaking, you can definitely argue that Rashica would have been a stellar addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad.

The Kosovan can also feature as an attacking midfielder and a striker, suggesting that he could prove to be an excellent back-up option for Danny Ings and Che Adams in Hasenhuttl’s side.

His versatility could be compared to Stuart Armstrong in Southampton’s squad, with the Scottish international capable of playing in multiple positions across midfield, whilst WhoScored also lists one of his strengths as liking to cut inside.

It will be interesting to see if any Premier League sides consider a move for the £19.8 million-rated winger in January. If he can produce the same sort of form he’s been doing in the Bundesliga in the English top-flight, then he would surely prove to be a solid signing for any Premier League club.

Predicted XI: Liverpool to get their title-holding season underway with statement win

Liverpool are set to host their first match of the 2020/21 season as they try to secure back-to-back Premier League titles.

The Reds haven’t been able to strengthen as much as they may have liked this window, but they still boast one of the best squads in the league. Jurgen Klopp and his men will be hoping to turn their Anfield fixture into a statement win to set the campaign up.

The likes of Manchester City and Chelsea will be breathing down Liverpool’s neck this season. They simply cannot afford to put in anything other than superb performances as the games go by.

Championship winners Leeds will make the trip to Merseyside in hopes of also starting their term off on the right foot. Here’s how Transfer Tavern has predicted Klopp to field his eleven this afternoon…

After playing the majority of last season with his trademark 4-3-3 formation, the Liverpool gaffer may be inclined to recreate his side from last weekend. The Reds played Blackpool in a preseason friendly and stormed to a huge 7-2 victory.

Gini Wijnaldum did not feature, instead Naby Keita and Fabinho operated in deeper-lying midfield roles whilst Takumi Minamino shifted behind Roberto Firmino. The former Red Bull Salzburg man – who is usually deployed on the wing – put in a terrific performance in midfield, bagging a goal and an assist (via Sofascore).

With Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both still out with injury, this could be Klopp’s preferred midfield.

Joel Matip similarly grabbed himself a goal against Blackpool and made only his second start in Liverpool’s last ten fixtures. The manager may opt to try him with another run out before reassigning Joe Gomez to his usual role alongside Virgil van Dijk.

A usual front three of Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah should allow Liverpool to place their mark on the game early on. They’ll be looking for nothing less than three points on the opening weekend.

Koch, Wilson & Rodrigo: How Leeds could look vs Liverpool on September 12th

Leeds United are back in the Premier League after a 16-year absence and their first game will be against the champions, Liverpool, at Anfield on September 12th.

But what sort of Whites team will we see in Merseyside?

Marcelo Bielsa has already conducted some business, signing Illan Meslier on a permanent basis with Jack Harrison’s loan being extended for another season.

Although expect more through the door soon, so here’s how United’s XI could look next month…

You’d imagine Meslier is nailed on for that number one spot after impressing towards the back end of last season whilst the future of Kiko Casilla is by no means certain.

One major need is in central defence with Brighton holding firm over loan star Ben White, therefore a €10m (£9m) move for Freiburg’s Robin Koch makes the most sense. He will partner skipper Liam Cooper in the middle with Luke Ayling and Barry Douglas on either side.

The former Wolves man could get the nod over Stuart Dallas given his experience at this level.

Kalvin Phillips is probably the first name on the teamsheet under Bielsa so there’s no surprises in the anchorman role while veteran playmaker Pablo Hernandez starts ahead of him alongside a new name – Nahitan Nandez.

The Cagliari enforcer has a release clause of €36m (£32m) and is deemed ‘perfect’ for Bielsa’s midfield.

Harrison is likely to continue on the left whilst reported target Harry Wilson could add some valuable Premier League experience on the other flank. The Liverpool ace scored seven times for Bournemouth as they were relegated to the Championship.

It’s thought that the Reds would want £20m for his services.

Whilst upfront, there could be no Patrick Bamford in the starting lineup with the club reportedly opening talks with Valencia for their striker Rodrigo, who has a £30m price tag.

If Victor Orta were to splash that much on a new number nine, you’d imagine he’d be thrown into the XI instead of having to settle for the bench.

It means there are no places for Championship-winning heroes Mateusz Klich, Helder Costa or Gjanni Alioski.

Celtic’s Armstrong Okoflex shows off skills in online challenge

Celtic have a number of youngsters currently in the squad who could be destined for bigger and better things, though they are at different stages of their development.

Jeremie Frimpong has broken into the team this season and has earned praise from fans over the course of the season, though another prospect coming through – Armstrong Okoflex – could also show his talent soon.

The 18-year-old joined from Arsenal in 2018 but is still yet to make his debut for the Bhoys, and instead has had to prove himself in the Celtic youth team instead.

He has done that on occasion, and in order to take part in the #nutmegchallenge on social media he took footage from one of his previous games on his Instagram account, with an audacious bit of skill on show.

From the short video it is clear to see the midfielder possesses great technical ability and the confidence to match, as he picked up the ball from deep inside his own half before running at the opposition and putting his side on the front foot.

Celtic lack central midfielders with that pace and dynamism, so he could provide Neil Lennon with a different option.

It will be intriguing to see how he fares if he does indeed get a chance to shine for the first-team, but up until that point fans will probably have to keep their eyes peeled on the youth team to assess how he is progressing.

Meanwhile, this poignant image of a Celtic transfer target says a lot about Neil Lennon’s big decision…
