Saeed Ajmal signs for Worcestershire

The Pakistani offspinner, Saeed Ajmal, has joined Worcestershire for the second half of the 2011 season, pending the granting of a No Objection Certificate from the Pakistan Board and work permit approval

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jan-2011The Pakistani offspinner, Saeed Ajmal, has joined Worcestershire for the second half of the 2011 season, pending the granting of a No Objection Certificate from the Pakistan Board and work permit approval.”We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Saeed to the club,” said Worcestershire’s director of cricket, Steve Rhodes. “He’s a bowler of international stature and as a spinner with good variation he will be a crucial weapon during the latter part of the season, when the wickets notoriously begin to turn.”Ajmal has taken 33 wickets in nine Tests for Pakistan, with a best of 5 for 82 against England at Edgbaston in July 2010. He was also an integral member of Pakistan’s victorious World Twenty20 campaign in 2009, in which he claimed 12 wickets at 13.58, including a best of 4 for 19 against Ireland.”Worcestershire has a special standing in Pakistan due to its association with Imran Khan, and I am proud to be able to represent the same club as the great Imran,” said Ajmal. “I am confident that with the help of Steve Rhodes and the boys at the club, I will settle in and give my all for the club in search of honours in 2011.”

Teams battle to retain focus

ESPNcricinfo previews the fourth one-day international between England and Pakistan at Lord’s

Start time 1pm (12pm GMT)Shahid Afridi faces a stern challenge to inspire his troops ahead of the Lord’s ODI•Getty Images

Big pictureIt is just three weeks since these two sides last met at Lord’s in an encounter that will live in infamy whatever the result of investigations into allegations of spot-fixing in the fourth Test. A match that included a display of Mohammad Amir’s teenage brilliance and an equally eye-catching fightback from Stuart Broad and Jonathan Trott ended in an atmosphere of tense and eerie quiet as England sealed a joyless innings and 225-run thrashing. The tour continued despite Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt’s suspension and even after an easy win for England in the first one-dayer fans on both sides turned out in large numbers at Headingley and The Oval. They were treated to what were, arguably, the two most enthralling contests this summer as England went 2-0 up before a career-best effort from Umar Gul brought the visitors back from the brink of a series defeat. Now, Pakistan’s visit has been thrown into yet more turmoil with the news that the ICC is investigating the third ODI after it received information from a newspaper before the game began alleging that bookies were aware of certain scoring patterns that occurred during the match. While the ICC have been quick to point out that it would be premature to suggest anything untoward occurred during Pakistan’s 23-run win, the fans’ show of faith now appears depressingly naive. It had been hoped that Pakistan’s visit could finish on the positive note of a hard-fought contest, but the focus may well be elsewhere after the most recent allegations and the frustration and sadness in the England camp was evident ahead of the fourth match. Morale in Pakistan’s squad will also have been undermined and it will be a challenge to retain the momentum gleaned from Friday’s win. An autumnal Lord’s may well seem a bleak venue for what could have been an eagerly-anticipated clash.Form guide (last five completed matches)England LWWWL
Pakistan WLLWLLWatch out for…Ian Bell is poised to return to international duty with England after being recalled to the one-day squad for the final two matches. Bell was been in prolific form for Warwickshire since returning from his metatarsal injury and though he might have hoped for more pleasant circumstances in which to cement his England spot, with a challenging winter ahead he will be looking to make the most of every opportunity.
Shahid Afridi showed glimpses that he was beginning to return to his destructive best at The Oval and if he can find form with the bat and rhythm with the ball he is dynamic and charismatic enough to be a dangerous player regardless of any off-field distractions. Afridi has so far managed to remain distanced from the allegations swirling around his team, and will still be looking to lead from the front.Team newsRavi Bopara’s return to England’s middle order has only been partially successful, and either he or Luke Wright could sit out if Paul Collingwood has recovered from the virus that kept him out of the third match and Bell slots back into the line-up.England (possible) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Steve Davies (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ian Bell, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Michael Yardy, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James AndersonAn embattled Pakistan are likely to stick to the same starting XI, both because this unit was successful in the last match and to present a unified front as the storm surrounding the most recent round of allegations gathers force.Pakistan (probable) 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Fawad Alam, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Abdul Razzaq, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Shoaib AkhtarPitch and conditionsSaturday’s CB 40 Final, which was also a day/night affair, gave a good indication of what to expect at Lord’s. In a match dominated by the ball but won by a batsman, Imran Tahir’s returns were the most impressive. The seamers also found plenty in the pitch to keep them interested, however, and Bell’s knock highlighted the value of having someone to bat through most of the innings. Although temperatures are likely to be on the low side once again, rain shouldn’t be an issue.Stats and Trivia Bell’s performance against Somerset extended his domestic limited-overs tally this season to 554 runs at 61.55, including six fifties and Saturday’s fluent hundred. Bell has also been in decent nick in his limited Championship and he scored the only hundred of the match against Hampshire last week to secure Warwickshire’s spot in Division One.
Umar Gul clearly enjoys bowling at The Oval, and has taken 20 wickets at an average of 11.00 across three formats there. He is less enamored with Lord’s, where has 12 wickets in two Tests and three T20Is at 31.08.
Opinions are split over Fawad Alam’s success as a one-day player. While he has an impressive average of 45.00 that has been inflated by finishing not out eight times 18 innings in ODIs, and in matches where he has been dismissed his average dips to 27.60. His career strike-rate of 75.00 doesn’t suggest that he’s set the world alight, but in the ten ODIs he has played in in which Pakistan have won he averages 110.00, and so it appears he relishes the role of stabiliser and finisher in the middle order.
Quotes”They’ve been three very hard-fought cricket matches. There certainly seems to be passion on both sides, they’ve been high intensity affairs.”

Ashraful to captain BCB XI against NZ

Mohammad Ashraful has been named captain of the Bangladesh Cricket Board XI that will take on the touring New Zealand team

Mohammad Ashraful has been named captain of the Bangladesh Cricket Board XI that will take on the touring New Zealand team in the first warm-up match in Savar on October 1. Ashraful, who has been in and out of the Bangladesh side following a prolonged run of poor form, was left out of the squad that will play five ODIs against the visitors, but gets the chance to show the selectors they made a mistake. The selectors have opted for youth, picking a number of players under the age of 23 in the 14-man squad. Shamsur Rahman, 22, averaged 67 in two unofficial Tests against South Africa A earlier this year. He was also part of Bangladesh’s squad for the World Twenty20 in 2009, and was called up to the Test team that toured England earlier this year as back-up.The bowling attack includes 21-year-old Dolar Mahmud, who last played for Bangladesh against Zimbabwe in 2009, and 18-year-old legspinner Noor Hossain, who has just four first-class matches under his belt. Meanwhile 20-year-old Mithun Ali will keep wickets. The BCB XI plays two one-day matches against New Zealand, the second of which is also at Savar on October 3. The five ODIs will be hosted in Mirpur from October 5 to 17.Bangladesh Cricket Board XI squad: Mohammad Ashraful (capt), Shamsur Rahman, Faisal Hossain, Shahadat Hossain, Mahbubul Alam, Syed Rasel, Nazimuddin, Noor Hossain, Dolar Mahmud, Rony Talukder, Nasir Hossain, Mithun Ali (wk), Shabbir Rahman, Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury

West Ham United: Irons interested in signing Timo Hubers

West Ham United have joined a whole host of Premier League teams in the race to sign FC Koln centre-back Timo Hubers in the summer.

The Lowdown: Huber’s situation

The 25-year-old has made 15 appearances in the Bundesliga this season after forcing his way into the starting XI, following a period on the bench.

Ever since his inclusion he has been an absolute colossus for Steffen Baumgart’s defence, with WhoScored ranking him as Koln’s best player this season, averaging a 7.13 rating.

However, at the end of the season, Hubers will enter the final 12 months of his current contract. Consequently, a number of Premier League sides have been eyeing a cheap deal for the defender.

The Latest: West Ham now interested

According to a fresh report by the Daily Mail, West Ham are among a bunch of Premier League sides who are interested in signing Hubers in the summer.

It is said that Newcastle, Leeds and Crystal Palace are all understood to be tracking the 6 foot 2 centre-back, while West Ham, Southampton and Championship promotion favourites Fulham are also monitoring his situation.

The Daily Mail have reported that it will take a £6 million transfer fee to coax Hubers away from the German top-flight.

The Verdict: Good back-up option

David Moyes’ side have struggled at times this season with a lack of options in the central defender position.

This issue was exacerbated by the serious injury sustained in November by Angelo Ogbonna, who is now hoping to make his return before the end of the season.

Therefore, a player like Hubers, with experience in a competitive top-flight division, could provide West Ham’s Kurt Zouma and Craig Dawson with much-needed cover.

Steady start to Ashes ticket sales

The first roll-out of Ashes tickets did not match the stampede for the 2006-07 series but more than 60,000 seats were sold for the opening Tests in Brisbane and Adelaide. Members of the Australian Cricket Family were given priority in the initial release ahead of next week’s general launch.Almost 25,000 tickets went in the first 30 minutes for the Brisbane Test, which starts on November 25, and by the end of the day the total had risen to more than 27,000. While local supporters gained a jump on England fans, there will still be at least 20,000 seats available at the Gabba – its daily capacity is 40,000 – to the general public over the first four days. While the demand was small compared to the unprecedented interest four years ago, Queensland Cricket was pleased with the response. “It’s what we’d get for a good series so we’re rapt,” a spokesman said. The Sydney Test goes on sale on Thursday for registered members while the Melbourne and Perth tickets will be available on Friday. Unfilled seats will then be made available to the general public from next Wednesday.Four years ago the ticket systems crashed due to the demand caused by those wanting to see how Australia reacted to their 2005 loss. The result was a 5-0 whitewash of England, the first in an Ashes contest since 1920-21, and the series was watched by a record 930,000 spectators.

O CARA DO JOGO

DIFICULDADES NO INÍCIO

PRÓXIMO PASSO

Dan Burn open to Newcastle move

A big Newcastle United transfer claim has emerged regarding  the club’s pursuit of Brighton’s 6 foot 5 giant Dan Burn…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has revealed whether or not the centre-back is open to the move to Tyneside this month.

He tweeted: “Newcastle are expected to go back in for Brighton defender Dan Burn.  The St James’ Park club have had an initial offer in the region of £8m rejected for the 29-year-old. Burn is a Newcastle fan and we’re told he’d be interested in a potential move back north.”

Buzzing

This news will surely leave Newcastle fans buzzing for several reasons.

Firstly, the defender could help to solve a major problem for Eddie Howe. There is no hiding away from the fact that Newcastle have been poor this season. They have not won enough games and have conceded far too many goals, with Norwich the only team to concede more in the top flight, having played a game more than the Toon, who have let in 43 goals as it stands.

Meanwhile, Burn has been part of a Brighton team which has conceded just 23 times in the Premier League. The defender has averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 6.96 for the Seagulls this season, showing that he has been consistently delivering good performances to help his team avoid conceding goals.

This suggests that the 29-year-old could come in and improve the Magpies’ backline, as he has proven that he can function as part of an impressive defence on the south coast. Therefore, he could play a part in solving Howe’s defensive issues during the second half of the campaign.

The Toon Army will also be delighted to read that he is one of their own and interested in making the move happen. The fact that he is a Newcastle fan suggests that he would give his all for the club on the pitch and would not just be making the transfer happen to increase his pay packet at the end of the month.

Supporters would surely appreciate a player who is a genuine fan of the club, as they will know that the player will give 100% and care about the city and the people. That is why Burn, in particular, could be a signing that Newcastle fans are buzzing to see happen.

West Indies search for morale boost

South Africa had the better of a scrappy outing in the first Twenty20 yesterday, but there is still some way for them to go before they are back to their best.

The Preview by Liam Brickhill20-May-2010Match FactsThursday, May 20
Start time 1400 (1800 GMT)Ryan McLaren ripped through West Indies on a helpful surface in the first Twenty20•AFPThe Big PictureSouth Africa had the better of a scrappy outing in the first Twenty20 yesterday, but although they will have been desperate for a positive start to their tour after the fallout of their unsuccessful World Twenty20 campaign, the circumstances of their victory call for further introspection, and there is still some way for them to go before they are back to their best.To be fair, South Africa can hardly take all the blame the low-intensity, sloppy display of the first match. Although the outfield held up well, the pitch at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium remains substandard, especially for limited-overs cricket, and West Indies’ efforts in the game were hardly inspirational. The stadium was only around a tenth full, and it remains to be seen whether today’s game will attract more local interest.South Africa have made something of a fresh start in the shorter formats, with Herschelle Gibbs and Mark Boucher left out, with Alviro Petersen and Ryan McLaren slotting in to the line-up, with AB de Villiers keeping wicket. While Petersen, who normally plays as an opening batsman, failed when brought in at No. 7, McLaren took his chances to record the second-best bowling figures in Twenty20 history with 5 for 19.After a wearily familiar performance from West Indies yesterday, in which they performed well in fits and starts but never built up any consistency as a team, it may be time for them to do some re-thinking and clearing out too. Indeed, Chris Gayle has warned his underperforming batsmen that their time is running out, and the side will be under intense pressure to perform today.Form guide (most recent first)South Africa WLLWW
West Indies LLWLWWatch out for… Given the gloves for the first time in T20 International’s last game, AB De Villiers did a sterling job. Chances were easily snaffled and his leg-side stumping of Narsingh Deonarine off Johan Botha was exhilarating. However, with the bat for South Africa he’s flickered without firing for too long in this format. The pitch may not be easy but it’s time for him to lift his and South Africa’s game. When things start to go wrong, West Indies can too often let their shoulders slump and allow the game to drift. One man, though, is always fighting, always bustling and always believing. Dwayne Bravo may be struggling for form with the ball but he was West Indies’ best batsman in the opening fixture and, given the responsibility of batting three, could be the man to carry a fragile batting line-up.Team newsShivnarine Chanderpaul was left out of the line-up for the first game, but with West Indies under pressure after their defeat he could well come back in to provide some stability to a shaky top order. Andre Fletcher failed with the bat, but looked sharp behind the stumps and should retain his place, although whether he opens or comes in down the order remains to be seen.West Indies (possible) 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 3 Dwayne Bravo, 4 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Andre Fletcher (wk), 7 Darren Sammy, 8 Jerome Taylor, 9 Nikita Miller, 10 Sulieman Benn, 11 Kemar Roach.South Africa’s experiment with Alviro Petersen down the order didn’t quite work out in the first game, and they could well opt to bring in 20-year-old Dolphins left-hander, David Miller, who made a 60-ball 115 for South Africa A during their recent match against Bangladesh A in Mirpur.South Africa (possible) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Loots Bosman, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers (wk), 5 David Miller, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Johan Botha, 8 Ryan McLaren, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Roelof van der Merwe, 11 Charl LangeveldtPitch and conditionsThe outfield at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium looked far improved from the sandpit that lead to the farcical abandoned Test during England’s tour last year, if a little on the slow side. But the pitch had a mottled hue, and was unpredictably two-paced. It seemed to have settled down a touch by the time West Indies batted, but conditions for the batsmen are likely to be less than friendly today once again.Stats and triviaRyan McLaren’s figures of 5 for 19 in the first game are the second-best in Twenty20 history, behind Umar Gul’s stunning 5 for 6 against New Zealand. He also became just the fourth bowler to register a five-wicket haul in the format, and Darren Sammy is one of the three other bowlers to reach the feat.Quotes”We all know the nature of T20 cricket – the bowler is always up against it.”
Ryan McLaren talks up his man-of-the-match winning 5 for 19.
“We have to pick ourselves up. This is no time for pointing fingers.”
Chris Gayle urges his side to remain motivated despite their loss in the opening game.

Prince struck nine fours and two sixes in his 52-ball 69, and Kallis, just a hint slower, smashed six fours and a six in his 55, off 47 balls. Colin Ingram and Mark Boucher provided the big hits at the death to take the Warriors, in front of close to 17,000 supporters at St George’s Park, to a challenging 186 for 2.The Lions never looked like scaling down the target, as they lost wickets at frequent intervals to surrender meekly. Makhaya Nitni, Johan Botha, Nicky Boje and Juan ‘Rusty’ Theron, who has been signed up by Kings XI Punjab for the IPL and picked in the South African squad of 30 for the World Twenty20, bagged two wickets each. The top score in the Lions effort was just 15, and they ended up falling 82 short in a one-sided encounter.”We kept looking for the perfect game and I think we had it tonight,” Warriors captain Davy Jacobs said. “Ashwell and Jacques were fantastic. The early wickets we took in the power play were important. This is the result of several years of hard work and we are now seeing the results.”The victory was the Warriors’ second title-win in the domestic season, for they had previously won the MTN40 final as well. Both teams, having made it to the final, ensured qualification for the Champions League Twenty20 tournament to be held in India later in the year.
