Gerrard isn’t ready to leave Rangers

Former Rangers defender Michael Ball has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that he does not think Steven Gerrard is ready to leave Ibrox.

Given what the 40-year-old has managed to accomplish this season, some feel that he would be a good candidate for the Tottenham job, with Peter Crouch believing that he is the sort of manager the north London club should be interested in.

However, the retired striker, who played alongside Gerrard for both Liverpool and England, does not think he would leave Rangers for any outfit other than the Reds.

And it is a sentiment shared by Ball, who cannot see the legendary midfielder departing Ibrox now.

Speaking exclusively to TT about Gerrard’s future, Ball said:

“I think everybody probably knows what Steven’s end goal is. I don’t think Steven’s ready to leave Rangers right now.”

It is not hard to see why Gerrard would want to remain at Rangers next season and even beyond.

The Gers boss will surely want to have a go at defending the Scottish Premiership title against rivals Celtic, while what is likely to be his dream job, the Liverpool manager position, is not available and probably will not be for a while as Jurgen Klopp continues to succeed at Anfield.

Newcastle making big Federico Fernandez mistake

Newcastle are sleepwalking into a nightmare after Steve Bruce’s update on Federico Fernandez’s contract situation at St James’ Park.

What’s the story?

The Argentine’s £45k-a-week contract comes to an end in the summer, and Bruce has admitted that a decision on him, and some of the Premier League club’s other out-of-contract stars, will only be dealt with when the season is over.

He said: “All of them decisions are obviously discussions to be had when the season’s done and dusted. We’re not done and dusted yet. There are difficult decisions to make, of course, at every football club, that’s part and parcel of it. Yes, we’ve got some big decisions to make.”

Nightmare for Steve Bruce

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh admitted that Fernandez has been a “huge miss” for the Magpies this season after Bruce’s update on his fitness earlier in April, and it’s no surprise given the impact and influence he holds at St James’ Park.

Named him as his player of the year for Newcastle in December 2020, Waugh said: “Allan Saint-Maximin is the Newcastle player with the most quality and has, on occasion, produced some match-defining moments. Callum Wilson, meanwhile, came close to being named player of the year, despite only joining Newcastle in September.

“However, Federico Fernandez, the immovable object at the heart of Newcastle’s defence, deserves this accolade due to his consistent excellence. He is never flashy, but the 31-year-old is one of the few dependable performers – goalkeepers Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow also made this imaginary shortlist – and embodies the admirable resilience of this side.

“He may not offer a highlight reel of pyrotechnics like Saint-Maximin, but Newcastle fans take just as much pleasure out of watching compilations of Fernandez’s tackles, headers, interceptions and blocks as they do their forwards’ goals.”

Letting someone like Fernandez, with his wealth of experience at St James’ Park (he’s played 78 times for the club), go would be a major nightmare for Bruce and one that he must surely avoid.

But with his revelation that contract talks will be put on hold until the end of the season, that just raises the prospect of the Argentine leaving on a free or other clubs coming in and swooping before the Magpies even get their act together.

It’s exactly why Bruce simply has to make a start on offering Fernandez a new deal at the club.

Celtic: Nick Hammond exit confirmed

Celtic confirmed on Wednesday evening that head of football operations Nick Hammond has resigned from his Parkhead role with a short and sweet 25-word tweet.

Hammond, who joined the Hoops in 2019 to work alongside Peter Lawwell and Neil Lennon, has left the club ‘to pursue new opportunities’.

Hammond jumped before being pushed?

Reports from Football Insider back in January claimed that the transfer guru was under major pressure to keep his job in Glasgow.

The story midway through the winter window claimed that multiple key figures could be sacked, so it seems as if Hammond may have jumped before he was pushed in regards to his Celtic role.

Celtic’s official social media post led to a fairly short club statement on their website where the Hoops shared their best wishes for the 53-year-old.

Transfer Tavern take

With Lawwell, Lennon and now Hammond out of the door at Celtic Park, it seems as if the club’s off-field rebuild is starting to take shape.

Dominic McKay will replace Lawwell and the club are looking to appoint a director of football, with Manchester City’s Fergal Harkin the frontrunner.

A new manager should also be in place ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, where the Hoops will look to reclaim the Scottish Premiership title at the expense of rivals Rangers.

Liverpool should secure Olise swoop

Liverpool could be set to bolster their attacking options in the summer with a swoop for Reading starlet Michael Olise.

According to Football Insider, the Reds are among a host of Premier League clubs interested in the 19-year-old French youth international – and now they must ensure they elbow their way to the front of the queue for the midfielder.

Despite having only broken throughout into the Reading first team last year, Olise is having an extremely productive campaign in the Championship.

He has already notched five goals and ten assists for a Royals side gunning for a place in the promotion playoffs come the end of the season. His dribbling and close control of the ball have become hugely potent weapons for Veljko Paunović’s men.

Even before he managed to establish himself in Reading’s first team, his teammates were already aware of his potential, with current Royals frontman Sam Baldock labelling Olise as “fearless” and a “real talent”.

The young Frenchman’s versatility would also see him become an attractive proposition for Jurgen Klopp.

[snack-amp-story url=https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=” Latest Liverpool transfer rumours and news!”]

Whilst often deployed centrally at the Madejski Stadium, Olise is also equally adept at being pushed further forwards or even taking up a position out wide, per Transfermarkt.

With current Reds winger Xherdan Shaqiri potentially angling for a move away from Anfield in the near future to find a “solution” to his lack of game-time at the club, Olise could be the perfect candidate as a replacement for the Swiss ace.

Rated at just £10.8m but with just over a year left to run on his contract in Berkshire, Olise could certainly be an affordable option for the Reds, allowing them to deploy more considerable funds elsewhere in the squad.

Should they wish to bolster their attack, the promising Olise seems like an excellent option. Liverpool need to make sure they’re first in line for his signature.

Hasenhuttl should unleash Salisu vs AFCB

Southampton’s Premier League form may have fallen off a cliff in recent months but the Saints are still going in the FA Cup and have a great chance of reaching the last four as they face Championship side Bournemouth in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

In order to give his side the best chance of success at the Vitality Stadium, Ralph Hasenhuttl should consider unleashing Mohammed Salisu at the weekend.

After a difficult first few months with Southampton, the centre-back finally made his debut for the club in the 2-0 win against Wolves in the last round and he has gone on to make a further five appearances for the Saints since then. However, he was left out of the line-up against Brighton last weekend.

The 21-year-old also showed his versatility in the recent 5-2 defeat against Manchester City, with Hasenhuttl selecting him at left-back and Ryan Bertrand moving to right-back as a result.

The former Chelsea man has been Saints’ first choice at left-back for the whole season despite a poor run of recent form, with his 6.42 average rating comfortably the worst of Southampton’s regulars in defence.

Therefore, it is perhaps time that he was dropped, with Salisu the natural replacement for the Englishman at left-back, especially after youngster Jake Vokins was sent on loan to Sunderland in January.

Earlier in the season, Jannik Vestergaard dubbed the former Real Valladolid man a “big talent” despite his lack of appearances, and his debut at Wolves certainly showed what he is capable of, as he earned an impressive 7.02 WhoScored rating for his performance, helping Hasenhuttl’s side to a rare clean sheet.

Bournemouth’s main threat on Saturday will arguably come down the wings, with both Junior Stanislas and Arnaut Danjuma having impressed for the Cherries this season. Hasenhuttl should arguably select his two most in-form full-backs to deal with them, and that should see Salisu start ahead of Bertrand on the left.

Playing the young centre-back out wide also allows Southampton to shift into a back three with Walker-Peters pushing forward on the right, so having a natural centre-back in that position could well prove to be a game-changer for Hasenhuttl, not just against Bournemouth but maybe for the rest of the season.

Villa struck dream transfer with Emi Martinez

After securing yet another clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Leeds United in the Premier League at the weekend, it’s fair to say Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez has been one of the signings of the season.

Speaking after his arrival, Dean Smith declared: “We know how highly Arsenal rated him and we watched his outstanding performances last season in a trophy-winning top side.

“We moved for Emi when we saw the opportunity, as it is rare to be able to buy a top-class goalkeeper who hasn’t yet reached their peak age and who can therefore be a key player for our club for the long term.”

And it’s fair to say that Martinez has been more than just a good signing. The Argentine has been the cornerstone of Villa’s impressive defensive record this season, keeping 13 clean sheets in just 24 Premier League games – only Ederson of runaway leaders Manchester City has kept more with 15.

Valued at £13m by CIES, the 6 foot 4 shot-stopper has arguably been Villa’s talisman this season, not Jack Grealish. Martinez has cut an imposing figure in between the sticks, and has already racked up a highlight reel of incredible stops and flying saves with the tips of his gloves – you’ve only got to look at his one-man show against Brighton to see just how good he is.

It’s no surprise that more people seem to have caught onto Martinez’s ability, with Argentinian World Cup winner Daniel Bertoni, saying: “Any Italian team looking for a goalkeeper should watch Emiliano Martinez, who Arsenal relinquished last summer.

“Now he plays for Aston Villa and is a phenomenon: he guarantees 10 points per season.”

The shut-out against Leeds at Elland Road was the eighth time Villa have kept the opposition out in their 13 away games thus far this season, which already equals their club record from the 2009/2010 campaign.

A lot of that comes down to having a goalkeeper who can bring a bit of composure to the defence, not making any silly mistakes and doing the simple things well – he’s committed just one error leading to a goal in the Premier League, while he’s also much more of a throwback in terms of his style of goalkeeping.

He’s made just the one punch in 24 league games, instead being a much more relieving sight for his defenders by choosing to go up for the ball and hold it when the ball is in the air – he’s made 30 high claims.

Having that kind of number one behind you, is surely hugely welcomed by the likes of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa, who know that their goalkeeper is there to take the pressure off their shoulders rather than add to it.

It’s exactly why Johan Lange struck a dream deal for Villa when he signed Martinez from Arsenal last summer.

Palace fans slam James Ward-Prowse

Several Crystal Palace fans have been having their say on James Ward-Prowse after the Southampton midfielder commented on a 2019 clash with Wilfried Zaha.

The Saints star went past 300 appearances for the club earlier this season and was shown some of his best bits in a video shared on the club’s official YouTube account.

Numerous goals and free-kicks were on show, but one heated moment included was between Ward-Prowse and Zaha in January 2019 during a 1-1 draw – a game in which both players were on the scoresheet.

Zaha was sent off after two quick yellow cards following an altercation with Ward-Prowse, who celebrated with the Saints fans after the Palace star was dismissed.

Ward-Prowse simply said ‘oops, second yellow’ when he watched the footage back, which seems to have irritated plenty of Eagles supporters.

The clip was shared on Twitter by Southampton fan @JoshW_SFC on Tuesday evening and has been viewed over 29,000 times as of Wednesday lunchtime.

This is what these Palace fans had to say, with many hitting out at the England international…

Villa’s Matt Targett a doubt vs Newcastle

Whilst the likes of Jack Grealish and Ollie Watkins may be the Aston Villa players to take most of the headlines this season, spare a mention for Matt Targett.

The left-back has continued to be a reliable performer for Dean Smith’s in the Premier League, and produced an impressive display against Manchester City in mid-week, keeping England star Raheem Sterling in check.

But after coming up with just over 15 minutes to go at the Etihad, Targett appears to be a serious doubt for Villa’s next top-flight clash.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Newcastle on Saturday night, Smith said: “It was a very good performance up until the 74th minute when he decided to sit down because he was tired out and we knew there was a possibility of that happening to one or two of the players who had suffered (with the virus).”

The £35k-a-week earning ace is a bit of an unsung hero for Villa, something Alan Hutton echoed, when he said: “I think he just quietly goes about his business and you’re right, because of the other players within that squad, he probably doesn’t get the praise that he’s due this season.

“He’s definitely went under the radar but I think the proper football fans and people will see exactly what he does for the team, much like Matty Cash on the opposite side.”

With Neil Taylor the only other real left-back option to Smith, he will be desperately hoping that Targett can pass any late fitness checks and makes it for the Newcastle game.

Taylor has made just four appearances in total this campaign, with only 15 minutes of Premier League football under his belt. Targett has nailed that left-back role down and has been part of a settled back-line for Villa for most of the season.

If he’s missing versus Newcastle, Smith will be worried.

Meanwhile, Villa boss Dean Smith must start this man tonight…
