Rahane gearing up to grab opportunity

The morning after Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell Test ended at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Ajinkya Rahane arrived at the Mumbai Cricket Association’s facility at Bandra-Kurla Complex, and began working long hours in the nets with former Mumbai coach Pravin Amre to prepare for the upcoming tour of South Africa.”I’ve been practising with Amre sir and playing the short balls for the last nine-ten days with a wet rubber ball and plastic ball. I am sure that will help me a lot.” Rahane told reporters at the Wankhede Stadium, a day after he was named in India’s squad for the Test and ODI series in South Africa.Despite being a regular in India’s squad for more than two years, Rahane has rarely featured in the XI. However, Rahane is now believed to be the frontrunner to fill up the spot vacated by Tendulkar in the Test team.”We will obviously miss Sachin a lot. Someone like Sachin has not only been a part of the Indian team for almost 24 years but has also carried the burden of all the expectations on his shoulders. We all will definitely miss him. At the same time, it’s an opportunity for some of us, especially myself. But I don’t want to be bogged down by the pressure. I just want to enjoy the moment and enjoy my opportunity.”Rahane’s inclusion in the ODI squad came as a surprise to many and it indicated that he wouldn’t be tagged as a Test specialist. “Having been selected for the ODIs as well, I am really happy for myself,” he said. “I did well in the last CLT20 and I am really confident and looking forward to the series.”

Rain halts Essex after Mickleburgh ton

Only two hours of play were possible on the third day at Chelmsford but that proved to be enough time for Essex opener Jaik Mickleburgh to score his second Championship Division Two century of the season

Only two hours of play were possible on the third day at Chelmsford but that proved to be enough time for Essex opener Jaik Mickleburgh to score his second Championship Division Two century of the season. From an overnight 68, he advanced to 124 as Essex reached 240 for 2 in their duel against Glamorgan. That left them just 82 runs adrift of the Welsh county’s total of 322 in the first innings, but it will need something remarkable on the final day if they are to emerge with the victory they so desperately need to keep alive their promotion hopes. The only setback Essex suffered after they had resumed on 107 for 1 came when Greg Smith cut Michael Hogan high to gully where Dean Cosker held a fine catch. Smith departed for a quickfire 16 that all came in boundaries. After that, Mickelburgh and Owais Shah dominated proceedings with a flurry of aggressive strokes as they posted a century partnership in 24 overs. Both batsmen enjoyed themselves against spinners Cosker and Andrew Salter. Shah advanced down the pitch to drive both for six while his partner dealt out similar punishment to Salter soon after completing his century from 155 balls that included 14 fours.Neither batsmen looked in any trouble and, after Shah had completed his half-century from 72 balls, he quickly celebrated that particular landmark with his second six. That second sweetly-timed lofted blow brought up the hundred partnership spanning 25 overs and, the third-wicket pair have currently added 108 only for their further progress to be halted by the weather.Mickleburgh’s innings has so far lasted 184 deliveries and occupied almost four hours while Shah ended the day on 59, only his second half-century in the Championship this summer, an effort that has spanned 79 balls. Mickleburgh, who is the county’s leading run-scorer in the competition this season, now has 787 runs this summer with this current contribution, having been overlooked from the first three games of the campaign. However, he was denied the opportunity of adding to his tally of runs when rain arrived shortly after the players left the field for lunch. With no improvement in the weather, umpires Jeff Evans and Steve O’Shaughnessy formally called off play for the day at 4.30pm.

Swann, Bresnan avert embarrassment

A few weeks ago, when Lancashire bowled Essex out for 20, there were those within the England set-up who privately expressed concerns about the value of this game as preparation for the Ashes. Those concerns were understandable. Despite a talented squad, Essex are currently placed in the middle of Division Two of the County Championship and, with a view to their county commitments, took the opportunity to rest three or four first-choice players for this match. Would they put up any sort of resistance?Yet a second-string attack who had, before this game, claimed only eight first-class* wickets between them this season, dismissed England’s top seven for only 212. An unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 116 between Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann spared any acute embarrassment, but it was a day that suggested the surfeit of limited-overs cricket England have experienced of late has not been ideal preparation for the Ashes. Some caution is required before anyone concludes that England’s Ashes plans are in chaos. Complacency was certainly a contributory factor in one or two dismissals – notably Kevin Pietersen’s – and this game was designed precisely with the aim of easing England’s players back into the disciplines required for first-class cricket. It would be wrong to read too much into it.It was an inglorious performance from England’s top-order, though. Inserted by prior agreement and on a blameless pitch – Ravi Bopara, the Essex captain, later admitted he would have liked to bat but was happy to agree to England’s request – each one of the top seven made a start but failed to convert it into a meaningful contribution due to some looses strokes and a lack of concentration. There were some encouraging performances from Essex players, too. Tymal Mills, a 20-year-old left-arm fast bowler who played at the request of the England management, generated speeds in excess of 94 mph according to the television speed gun, while Tom Craddock, a 23-year-old leg-spinner who went into this game without a first-class wicket this season, claimed three in his first nine overs and demonstrated good composure in the face of Pietersen’s aggression.Pietersen had settled in against some woeful bowling. Fed a diet of full-tosses and long-hops, he eased three of his first four deliveries to the boundary and demonstrated his intent against Craddock’s legspin by driving the first delivery he faced from him over mid-on for four. He was dropped moments later attempting a repeat, Craddock unable to cling on to a sharp return chance, but then tried the shot once more and was well held by a relieved bowler. Pietersen’s dismissal, careless as it was, will irritate some but, in the grand scheme of things, it is more important to note that he looked fit and in fine form. He is likely to treat Ashes matches with far greater respect. If that wicket owed something to Pietersen’s impatience, the wicket of Matt Prior owed more to the traditional skills of a legbreak bowler. Drawing Prior into pushing at one outside off stump, Craddock took the outside edge with a delivery that turned appreciably on its way to the keeper. In between times, Ian Bell was the victim of a wonderful piece of fielding. Jaik Mickleburgh, at short leg, anticipated Bell’s stroke as the batsman shaped to dab-sweep and, moving sharply to his left, clung on to the catch one-handed. Bell had struggled for fluency throughout, but it was a somewhat unfortunate ending.Earlier, Joe Root had endured a painful start to his career as an England opening batsman. Root, promoted in place of the discarded Nick Compton to allow room for Jonny Bairstow in the middle-order, got off the mark with an edge that bounced just short of the slip cordon and was later struck on the left knee by a delivery from Mills. Despite the ball appearing to hit Root on the pads, the batsman was clearly in some pain and, a few deliveries later, was drawn into poking at one from Saj Mahmood that he could have left outside off stump and edged a catch to second slip. Root spent much of the rest of the day with an ice pack on his knee, but an England team spokesman said that it was not considered a serious injury.Mills was impressive, if inconsistent, but faded as the warmth of the day began to tell. Working up a sharp pace, he dismissed the England captain (and Mills’ Essex team-mate) Alastair Cook with a delivery that was probably a bit too close for the cut shot the batsman attempted and Jonathan Trott, who was drawn into feeling for one angled across him that he could have left.By contrast Mahmood, once seen as an England fast bowler of great potential, barely passed 80 mph and conceded five an over in a performance littered with full-tosses. He did, however, compensate with the wicket of Root – just his second first-class victim of the season – and later saw Bairstow leave one that tailed in a fraction to hit the top of off stump. But if England were to take any positives from the day, it will have been a reminder of the strength of their lower-order batting. While Bresnan resisted stoutly, Swann counterattacked in characteristic style. He hit Craddock for four boundaries in five balls and later Mills for three in succession as the pair steered their side from any danger and both completed half-centuries shortly before the close.Essex rested their captain James Foster, swing bowler Reece Topley and allrounder Graham Napier from their full-strength side, while England left out James Anderson and Stuart Broad from their likely first Test line-up. While Broad has a minor shoulder injury, the result of diving to regain his ground in the dying moments of the Champions Trophy final, an England spokesman confirmed that he would have been fit to play had this been a Test. It was also confirmed that England have no plans to send any of their squad bowlers along with Compton to further enhance the Worcestershire side in their game against the Australians later this week.*This match had first-class status removed on the third day

Seamers set up easy win for Central Districts

Central Districts eased to their second win of the season, beating Northern Districts by eight wickets at the Harry Barker Reserve in Gisborne

Central Districts eased to their second win of the season, beating Northern Districts by eight wickets at the Harry Barker Reserve in Gisborne. The game was set up for them on the first day, when they bowled out for ND for 183. In what was a collective bowling effort, Carl Cachopa picked up three wickets with his medium-pacers, well supported by the rest, three of whom collected two wickets each. The only significant contribution for ND came from wicketkeeper Adam Wheater, who made 53.CD were boosted by half-centuries from Jeet Raval and Ben Smith in their response, together with valuable knocks from the middle and lower-order batsmen who stretched the score to 341, and the lead to 158. The fast-bowling combination of Adam Milne and Ben Wheeler then backed that up with eight wickets in ND’s second innings, restricting them to 252. Daryl Mitchell and Ish Sodhi hit fifties but it wasn’t enough. Raval struck his second half-century in CD’s chase of 95 and victory was achieved with more than a day to spare.

Dwayne Smith relishing top-order role

Dwayne Smith, the West Indies allrounder, has said he is adapting well to this role at the top of the order, having decided to “give himself a chance” after moving up several rungs in the batting line-up. Smith has had a good run of late while batting in the top three, with three half-centuries in five internationals starting with the tour of England. The latest was in the first ODI against New Zealand in Jamaica, where he made an unbeaten 65 to help seal a comfortable victory.”I made a decision to move to the top order to give myself a chance,” Smith said on the eve of the second ODI on Saturday. “The selectors have put their faith in me and I have received a lot of support from everyone around. I am relaxed and in a good frame of mind.”Smith, who averages 17.72 in ODIs, was relied on to get quick runs batting in the middle order. As a No. 3, he said, he was now also expected to build an innings and bat longer. “I believe I am much more than just a six-hitter,” Smith said. I know once I look to get myself in and build an innings, I can make-up at the back-end of the innings.”I’m more experienced now and have a good understanding of what is required. I know my role in the team and that is primarily to dig in and get good runs on the board. I can clear the boundary, but I also want to show I can play quality innings and can get runs consistently.”Smith began his international career in 2004 and scored a century on debut against South Africa in the Cape Town Test. He has since played 10 Tests and 80 ODIs, and hasn’t quite managed to cement his place. He has, however, had more success as a Twenty20 cricketer, representing Sussex, Khulna Royal Bengals and Mumbai Indians among others.
