Everton don’t need to sign £35.7m-rated Arias as he isn’t much better than Coleman

[ad_pod ]

According to El Gol Digital, Everton are willing to pay €40m (£35.7m) to sign Atletico Madrid right-back Santiago Arias.

The Colombian international made 31 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side last term, scoring one goal and recording one assist following an €11m (£9.8m) move from PSV Eindhoven last summer.

Atletico could make a huge profit on the 27-year-old who Marcel Brands has openly praised in the past just a year on from signing him, if Everton make good on their intentions to offer the aforementioned sum of course.

The fans in the video below had some very strong words for Michael Platini who was detained over alleged corruption this week…

That is a lot of money for a right-back though; it would break the Toffees’ existing record initial fee for a defender which currently stands at the £27.2m that they spent on Yerry Mina last summer.

There is no way that the Merseysiders should pay that much for Arias, especially given the statistical comparison between him and the club’s current first-choice right-back Seamus Coleman.

As is common knowledge, the modern day full-back must be able to perform at both ends of the pitch – it is vital that they contribute to the attack as well as the defence.

Coleman’s two goals and two assists show that he does that part of the game well, and practically twice as good as Arias does seeing as he has doubled his goal involvement numbers.

The Irishman also completes more dribbles per game than Arias, recording 0.7 compared to the Atletico man’s measly 0.3.

The acknowledgement of being effective at both ends of the pitch is evident in Coleman’s stats above, as he records a solid 2.4 clearances per game – a whole one more than the former PSV defender makes on average.

The only area that Arias outperforms Coleman in is tackles per game, where he makes 1.9 compared to the Everton icon’s 1.5 – is that 0.4 difference enough to warrant spending £35.7m on the 5 ft 8 man to replace the former Sligo Rovers right-back?

Not really, in all honesty.

Danny Mills’ recent prediction outlines one key positive of new Leeds addition

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to Football Insider, Danny Mills has made the bold claim that one of Liam Cooper or Pontus Jansson could potentially be dropped ahead of the start of the season following the signing of Ben White.

Although the quotes could be taken negatively as it alludes to Leeds leaving a key player out, there are still plenty of positives to be found.

What’s been said then?

The former England international claimed that one of Leeds’ centre-backs could be in jeopardy of losing their spot.

“There will be real competition for places now,” he said. “You could see Jansson and White starting together in central defence, or White and Cooper,” Mills told Football Insider,

“You need that competition. If there’s no competition for places, even the best can get complacent. We saw last season that Leeds were short in that position, and Kalvin Phillips had to drop back for a few months when Cooper was injured.

“Cooper is a good, steady player. He had some very good performances last season and the odd mistake here and there. He has improved a lot since he joined Leeds, but you have to keep improving every season. If you stand still, you go backwards.

“He could easily start the season on the sidelines, especially if he’s not performing to the level Bielsa wants in training.”

Key positive

Jansson and Cooper both arguably had the best seasons of their career last campaign as they earnt spots in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, but with more competition for their spot this term they may be forced to up their game even further.

Indeed, the Swede and the captain have become real fans’ favourites at Elland Road, but that doesn’t mean their places in the starting XI are secure.

Mills clearly rates White, and if he begins to play well in training, the current centre-half pairing will have to step things up in order to stay in the team.

In signing the Brighton youngster on loan, Marcelo Bielsa hasn’t only added depth to his squad, but he has also created some friendly competition that could see his current stars improve.

Manchester United fans react to links with Mario Lemina

[ad_pod ]

As the uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of Paul Pogba grows by the day, Manchester United are seemingly on the hunt for a replacement for the World Cup winner.

The Red Devils have already lost Ander Herrera on a free transfer to PSG, whilst reports in recent weeks have suggested that Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic has been of interest to clubs in Italy.

Now, The Telegraph claim that United and Premier League rivals Arsenal have enquired over the availability of Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina, who has been left out of the club’s pre-season training camp.

The report adds that the Saints will hope to recoup much of the £18m they initially spent on signing him from Juventus, and the news saw United fans take to Twitter to voice their opinion.

Many Red Devils supporters seemed to throw their backing behind a potential move for the Gabon international and insisted that he would be a much better signing than rumoured target Sean Longstaff.

Indeed, some fans felt the 25-year-old could potentially thrive in an environment like Old Trafford and claimed that with his injury troubles behind him, he could develop into the midfielder people had initially envisaged.

Everton’s Tom Davies shares a new fashionable snap on Instagram

[ad_pod ]

Tom Davies is no stranger to brave fashionable choices as the youngster often shares them on his

/” data-lasso->social media profiles.

Whether it’s Instagram or something else it really doesn’t matter, and his newest snap can pretty much attest to that.

Everton’s young midfielder shared some photos from his holiday and captioned it as “Vacation in Hell”. But it was never really about the place but rather about the style and the clothing presented to the fans.

As always, it was a rather fashionable choice.

Of course, on seeing the snap, it was just a matter of time before his friends arrived to either throw some banter his way or praise him for another fashionable move for the masses.

Ramiro Funes Mori seemed to be in awe of the brave combination Davies was sporting in the image as he just complimented his style and supported it with some emojis.

Others, like Dominic Calvert-Lewin, were in a more jesting mood as the youngster offered the 21-year-old his bucket hat, implying that was something that was missing to complete his outfit.

Davies played a total of 19 games throughout all competitions in 2018/19 season, managing one assist in the process and captaining the team on five occasions in the Premier League – something to build on next term, for sure.

Liverpool must manage James Milner carefully

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

James Milner continues to defy his age as he readies himself for another season at Liverpool.

On the chalkboard

The midfielder will be 34 in January but he made 45 appearances last season and is likely to have another key role to play this term.

Indeed, he was deployed as a central midfielder, a right-back, a right midfielder and a left midfielder throughout the 2018/19 campaign.

And the stats prove that he is holding off the ravages of time.

Compared to Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Naby Keita, the club’s usual midfield three, Milner’s stats come across superbly.

Per WhoScored, he scored five goals in the Premier League, while the three scored four between them.

He registered four assists to Henderson’s three, Fabinho’s two and Keita’s one.

Milner also registered the most key passes, the most crosses, and the second-most tackles (behind Fabinho), and dribbles (behind Keita).

This is a hybrid midfielder who can do genuinely everything.

He clears the ball more regularly than both Henderson and Keita and has more shots per game than his English team-mate and the Brazilian anchor man.

Use him wisely

The key now is giving Milner’s body the rest it needs.

He is a full-throttle midfielder capable of getting up and down the pitch but, even so, one has to feel that it would be wise to limit his playing time in the coming months.

Milner has made over 500 appearances in the top-flight and Klopp needs to manage him carefully to ensure he is as effective as he can be.

The former Aston Villa and Manchester City man can be a key weapon for the club as they attempt to win their first Premier League title and defend their Champions League crown.

For him to do that, though, Klopp needs to handle him with care.

Tottenham must swoop for David Neres in this summer’s transfer window

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to pay £54m to land Ajax attacker David Neres in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

Neres enjoyed a terrific 2018-19 campaign for Ajax – scoring 12 times and registering 15 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions.

The 22-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Everton this summer and the Toffees are said to be in pole position to land the Brazil international.

According to Calciomercato, though, Tottenham are determined to hijack the Merseyside outfit’s move for Neres. Indeed, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are said to be prepared to pay £54m to land the attacker.

Spurs have already broken their transfer record to bring French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

However, the capital outfit continue to be linked with a number of players ahead of the start of the new Premier League campaign.

And bringing Neres to London for the 2019-20 season would send out a huge message to the rest of the league and indeed Europe.

Why must Tottenham move for Neres?

As mentioned, Neres contributed 12 goals and 15 assists for Ajax last term, including two goals and two assists in the Champions League as the Dutch giants reached the semi-finals of the competition.

What’s more, the attacker has a record of 29 goals and 32 assists in 99 appearances for his current club in all competitions.

Neres’ numbers are very impressive for a player still relatively young, but there is no question that his versatility will also be hugely attractive to Pochettino.

Transfermarkt have listed Neres as playing on 23 occasions as a left winger last season, 20 times as a right winger and seven times as an attacking midfielder.

He played in all three of those positions during Ajax’s run to the semi-finals of the European Cup and caused a lot of problems with his ability to rotate.

Tottenham need movement around Harry Kane if they are to move up another level in the coming seasons and a summer move for Neres makes a whole lot of sense.

Spurs fans want club to sell Victor Wanyama this summer

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans want the club to sell Victor Wanyama to AFC Bournemouth this summer.

The Daily Mail reports that the Cherries are keen on a deal to sign the Kenya international in this transfer window, with the deadline coming ever closer.

Indeed, the window will slam shut on Thursday and the report claims that the Cherries want to bring the former Southampton man to the south coast.

Wanyama battled with injury woes throughout 2018/19, making just 22 appearances in all competitions.

Indeed, only 13 of those came in the Premier League, though just four were starts. He completed the full 90 minutes on just two occasions.

As a result, fans have urged the club to cash in on the 28-year-old, as they look to further freshen their squad.

Indeed, Spurs have strengthened their midfield this summer with the club-record acquisition of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon.

Newcastle fans are split on Jacob Murphy speculation

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun journalist Phil Cadden, Newcastle United attacker Jacob Murphy is wanted on loan by four Championship clubs.

Indeed, Cadden claimed on Tuesday afternoon that Fulham, Derby County, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday were all eyeing loan moves.

Murphy, who joined Newcastle from Norwich City in July 2017, has managed just one goal in 41 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions.

The attacker spent the second half of the 2018-19 campaign on loan with West Bromwich Albion – netting twice in 15 appearances.

It does not appear that the 24-year-old is in the plans of Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, though, which could lead to a summer exit.

[ad_pod ]

A number of the Magpies’ fans have been on social media reacting to the latest speculation surrounding Murphy.

And it would be fair to say that there are a lot of differing views when it comes to the former England Under-21 international, as shown by the tweets below:

Arsenal fans disagree with Nigel Winterburn’s Luiz captaincy suggestion

[ad_pod ]

David Luiz’s transfer to Arsenal is still taking some getting used to.

The 32-year-old made the switch from Chelsea to the Gunners on transfer deadline day for a fee of £8m after having declared his intention to depart Stamford Bridge the day before.

As such, he is now an Arsenal player, and brings with him years of experience at the highest level. He has also won a plethora of trophies throughout his illustrious career.

AFTV’s Robbie has his say on Arsenal’s owners in the video below…

Such is his track record, Arsenal great Nigel Winterburn has suggested that Unai Emery should give the centre-back the captaincy this season.

“Emery should make Luiz captain for this season. He has the ability to be that Tony Adams figure in Arsenal’s backline,” he said.

“A captain needs to be someone vocal, someone that’s not scared to make people aware of their responsibilities just because they might upset them for five minutes.”

Whilst some Gunners may be happy that the Brazil international has made the move to north London, a lot disagree with the former left-back, and have rubbished the claim that Luiz should be the new leader of the team. They have taken to Twitter to share their opinions, and you can see some of the best comments below.
