Liverpool fans fume at Adrian news

A number of Liverpool supporters are unhappy at a report claiming Adrian will start the Reds’ Premier League clash with Leeds United this weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s side make the trip to Elland Road on Sunday afternoon, in what promises to be an entertaining contest between two attack-minded sides.

Liverpool have made a good start to the season, picking up seven points from their opening three league games, and another win is essential this weekend.

Unfortunately, the Reds may have to make do without their Brazilian players due to an ongoing dispute with the country’s FA.

According to the Mirror [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], Adrian looks set to come in in place of Alisson, assuming the issue isn’t resolved.

In other news, some Liverpool fans are happy at a rumoured move for one player. Find out who it is here.

Palmer reveals Sadio Berahino’s Sheffield Wednesday excitement

Saido Berahino is excited to be at Sheffield Wednesday, former Owls midfielder Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast after speaking to the player.

Berahino has been away from English football after leaving Stoke City for Belgian outfit Zulte Waregem in 2019 but is back again following his deadline day move to Wednesday.

The 28-year-old striker recently made his debut for the club in that disappointing 3-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle.

It is only a minor setback for Wednesday, though, with the Owls only a couple of points off the play-off spots and it obviously still being very early in the season, a season where they will be expected to challenge for promotion following their recent relegation from the Championship.

And Palmer has spoken to FFC about Berahino’s excitement over the challenge that lies ahead.

“He was round the other day. He’s very excited,” the ex-Wednesday player said. “I’ve told him all about Sheffield. Obviously Darren knows him really well from West Brom.

“If he can get off and get scoring goals, the fans will get behind him and I’m sure he’ll enjoy his football. But he’s super excited and he really wants to get going.”

With the likes of Berahino, Lee Gregory and Callum Paterson, Darren Moore certainly has options up front this campaign.

This star must not play for West Ham again

Andriy Yarmolenko’s time at West Ham United could quickly be coming to an end after his latest cameo performance against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon flattered to deceive.

The Hammers fell to a 2-1 defeat at the London Stadium after last season’s loan sensation Jesse Lingard bagged a last-minute winner before club captain Mark Noble missed an agonising penalty.

David Moyes turned to the Ukraine veteran in the second half, replacing summer signing Nikola Vlasic in the 68th minute, and Sky Sports commentator Rob Hawthorne noticed that the Irons boss was far from pleased with the 32-year-old.

“I’m not sure David Moyes was entirely happy with the efforts of Andriy Yarmolenko there,” he said during coverage. “Still the dialogue is ongoing between the West Ham manager and the Ukrainian forward, who he has just brought on. He certainly wants to see more from him.”

The Scotsman will probably want to think twice about trusting Yarmolenko as the season goes on, the fact that he turned to him in their need to find an attacking spark was perhaps a little perplexing.

All in all, the £3.6m-rated forward is lucky to still be at the club, having started just one Premier League game in 2020/21.

With his £115k-per-week contract set to expire at the end of the season, Moyes may be better off axing the former Borussia Dortmund man for the foreseeable future.

He has no business playing for the side again after such a lacklustre outing at the weekend.

It’s certainly not a good enough attitude from someone as vastly experienced as Yarmolenko, who has been capped a whopping 102 times at international level throughout his long career.

Moyes clearly won’t stand for it either as he was straight onto the 32-year-old’s back when he wasn’t performing, despite only just arriving on the pitch.

After joining in a £17.5m deal from the Bundesliga giants in the summer of 2018, Yarmolenko has never really hit the ground running in east London, largely due to a combination of injuries and his inconsistent performances on the pitch.

As per Transfermarkt, he’s made only 60 appearances in just over three seasons, where he has only contributed ten goals and six assists. You’d expect a lot more from what was your highest-paid player, prior to the arrival of Kurt Zouma this summer.

In the past, the 6 foot 2 Ukraine star has been lauded everything from “special” to “talented” but on the above evidence, we’ve rarely ever seen it – if at all.

Moyes should not turn to Yarmolenko again this season. His time at the Hammers must be done and dusted.

Levy plans to offload Alli from Spurs

Speaking to Football Insider, a Tottenham Hotspur source has leaked some damning information from Hotspur Way about Dele Alli.

The Lowdown: Alli twists and turns…

An outcast under former boss Jose Mourinho, it appears the England international is now back in contention for Spurs as new manager Nuno Espirito Santo hands him a chance to impress.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 25-year-old, who nearly joined Paris-Saint Germain on loan in January after extensive discussions were held, saw his move blocked after the Ligue 1 giants were unwilling to pay a £3 million loan fee (FI).

Starting every Premier League game under Nuno so far, Alli was hauled off at half time during Tottenham’s humiliating 3-1 north London derby defeat to Arsenal and news has now emerged on both his future and how he is behind-the-scenes.

The Latest: N17 source leaks Levy plan for Alli…

As per a Spurs source, speaking to FI, chairman Daniel Levy and the club are now planning to wait until next summer and offload Alli after seeing his value plummet in recent seasons.

They were open to offers for the midfielder this summer but securing a huge fee was a long shot, with Tottenham now hoping he can regain some consistent form under Nuno in time to see his stock rise again for next year.

Leaking more information on Alli, an N17 source has also dropped a damning reveal – with claims coming out on how the player is ‘difficult to manage’ behind the scenes as well as an ‘inconsistent trainer’.

The Verdict: Time to go?

A shadow of his former self after spending months in the wilderness under Mourinho, his 2016/2017 heights seem like a lifetime ago.

During that season, Alli notched a phenomenal 18 goals and seven assists from midfield in 35 Premier League starts but hasn’t managed to come close to those numbers since (WhoScored).

After years at Spurs, it may be time for the Lilywhites to cut their losses and part ways, and perhaps the player himself would benefit from a change in scenery too if he cannot even muster up maximum effort in training.

Celtic: Southampton want Furuhashi

An update has emerged on Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi, regarding his future at Parkhead.

What’s the talk?

According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, the Hoops could be in danger of losing Furuhashi with Southampton eyeing up a potential swoop.

The Japan international joined the Hoops from Vissel Kobe in the summer and is now said to be attracting interest from elsewhere after an impressive start to life in Scotland.

Van Dijk 2.0

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou could be set to repeat a mistake made by his predecessors at the club with this interest from Southampton in Furuhashi.

The fans would surely be fuming if one of the club’s best players is sold within months of him arriving in Scotland if the Saints attempt to land him in the January transfer window.

Supporters will also remember what happened one of the last times Celtic sold one of their stars to the south coast. Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk left to join the Saints for £13m in the summer of 2015 before going on to sign for Liverpool for £75m less than three years later.

This suggests that the Hoops could have secured more money for his services had they managed to keep hold of him for another year or two. Southampton made a gigantic profit on the defender, whilst Celtic had to watch on from afar as he became the world’s most expensive centre-back in 2019.

Postecoglou must now avoid a similar nightmare scenario with Kyogo in the next window. He has had a sublime start to his career at Celtic and quickly established himself as a key player, with eight goals and one assist in 11 matches to date.

Ex-Celtic striker John Hartson hailed him earlier this season and claimed he could aid their title challenge. He told The Sunday Post [05/09 print edition, via 67HailHail]:

“There is no doubt Celtic have landed someone quite special in Kyogo. His movement is outstanding.

“It was a pity he couldn’t get more involved against Rangers, but when he moved into the central role, he was an absolute menace to their defence.

“Having him gives Celtic a real chance of winning the league this season.

This highlights the immediate impact he has had on the side since his arrival in the summer. It also illustrates why supporters will be fuming if he is sold to Southampton in January, particularly if it is a similar fee to the £14m they received for van Dijk. It could be another horror show for Celtic where they watch him move on from St. Mary’s for five or six times more money later down the line.

Therefore, Postecoglou must plead with the board to keep hold of the forward in the upcoming transfer window in order to maintain the strength of his squad and avoid a repeat van Dijk situation.

Diogo Dalot was poor for Man Utd

Manchester United secured a dramatic late victory over Villarreal in Group F of the Champions League thanks to an injury-time winner from Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Red Devils were disappointing for large periods during the clash at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges fortunate to come away with all three points.

Paco Alcacer’s 53rd-minute opener was cancelled out by a magnificent Alex Telles volley, before Ronaldo popped up with a late winner, ending United’s two-game losing streak.

One player who struggled more than most, though, was stand-in right-back Diogo Dalot. The 22-year-old was handed a rare opportunity to impress from the off in midweek thanks to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s suspension, but he couldn’t grasp his opportunity.

Former Bournemouth winger Arnaut Danjuma terrorised the youngster from start to finish, twice testing goalkeeper David de Gea in the opening 15 minutes and then teeing up Alcacer for a goal-bound header just moments later.

The Dutchman continued in the same vein in the second half, again presenting Alcacer with a golden opportunity just eight minutes after the interval, and this time the striker made no mistake, poking the ball home from close range.

And at the opposite end, Dalot was just as ineffective. Time and time again, the Portugal international overhit his crosses and failed to pick out a teammate, breaking down multiple United attacks on a frustrating evening.

His underwhelming performance saw SofaScore award him a match rating of just 7 out of 10, one of the lowest totals awarded amongst his colleagues.

Dalot gave away possession a whopping 11 times during the 90 minutes, was dribbled past by an opposition player on two occasions and was unable to pick out a fellow United player with any of his attempted crosses.

It was a poor performance from the full-back who let Solskjaer down on an important evening for the United boss, and he’ll be hoping better evenings lie ahead.

And, in other news…Forget Ronaldo: Man Utd gem who had a 100% passing accuracy was Ole’s real hero

Sheff Wed fans slam Lewis Gibson v Bolton

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans have been slamming the performance of Lewis Gibson in their 1-0 home win against Bolton in League One on Saturday afternoon.

Darren Moore’s team were spared their blushes when Lee Gregory scored midway through the second half to give them all three points at Hillsborough.

Gibson endured a pretty torrid first half in the eyes of several Owls supporters and was even taken off by Moore before the second half began.

The defender, who is on loan from Everton, failed to make a single interception or tackle and also lost possession of the ball on 13 separate occasions (Sofascore), which is quite alarming considering that he only played for 45 minutes.

Journalist Joe Crann actually thought that he was ‘excellent’ and ‘so comfortable’ with the ball, but a lot of Wednesday supporters seemed to disagree with him, as shown by the regularity with which the 21-year-old lost possession.

Wolves fans hail incredible Kilman goal

A number of Wolves supporters have been lauding defender Max Kilman after he scored an incredible training ground goal on Friday before the trip to Aston Villa.

Bruno Lage’s side travel for his first managerial clash with the Villans on Saturday afternoon, as the two sides lock horns in a battle between two local rivals.

Wolves are looking to make it three Premier League wins in a row, having seen off both Southampton and Newcastle United in their last two outings.

It will be a tough challenge, however, and victory at Villa Park would feel significant, suggesting Lage’s men have really found their groove this season.

One player who will likely feature is Kilman, and he has been in inspired form in training, with Wolves’ official Twitter account posting a video of his stunning goal scored on Friday, with an outrageous touch and finish on show.

Joe Gomez impressed for Liverpool vs Preston

Liverpool managed to see off Championship side Preston North End in the Carabao Cup last night by a scoreline of 2-0 thanks to goals from Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi.

As well as the two goalscorers, one other Liverpool player that delivered a good performance at Deepdale was centre-back, Joe Gomez, over Adrian who managed to make three saves in the match and keep the Reds in the competition.

The defender, who started and played the full 90 minutes of the match in midweek with the captain’s armband, managed to make three clearances and one tackle, win 90% of the duels he was involved in.

He also completed 119 of the 131 passes he attempted, proving to be equally adept with the ball at his feet, and ultimately earn himself an overall match rating of 7.3, making him the joint-second highest-rated outfield Reds player on the day alongside the goalscoring duo, according to SofaScore.

This says to us just how much of an important figure Gomez is for the Merseyside club and how much they can rely on him when they need to even though he has only played a full 90 minutes on three occasions so far this season.

Liverpool signed Gomez, who has been previously described as a “sensational” player by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp, back in the 2015 summer transfer window from Charlton Athletic for a fee of just £3.5m.

Since then, the 24-year-old, who is now valued at £27m according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of 128 appearances for the Reds across all competitions, helping the club win the Premier League and Champions League in that time.

Forget Adrian, it was Gomez who was an absolute rock at the back despite the Championship outfit’s advances in the first-half.

Moving forward, with Liverpool set to take on Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League at the weekend, Gomez’s performance in midweek will certainly have given Klopp some food for thought over whether he should start the Englishman on Saturday or not.

However, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate getting rested in midweek after keeping a clean sheet at Old Trafford in their 5-0 win over Manchester United last weekend, it would make sense for Klopp to stick with those two and put Gomez back on the substitutes bench for the Brighton clash.

West Ham fans hail Dawson display

As West Ham United breezed past Genk at the London Stadium this evening, taking yet more control of Group H, many Irons supporters were blown away by the performance and contribution of defender Craig Dawson.

David Moyes’ men took a giant leap towards finishing top by beating the Belgian giants this evening.

Indeed, they have gone six points clear with their victory and, as per the new Europa League format, potentially finishing as group victors will guarantee West Ham a spot straight into the last 16.

Moyes rested a fair few first teamers tonight with the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Andriy Yarmolenko, Nikola Vlasic, Alphonse Areola and Dawson all coming in after the weekend victory at Everton.

Among all of these fresh faces, it was the latter man who garnered real praise on Twitter for his display – especially considering he opened the floodgates with his towering first half header.

He was also among the highest-rated West Ham players on SofaScore and it’s safe to say his ‘massive’ display didn’t go unnoticed.
