West Ham: Toloui drops Gabigol update

West Ham United have been dealt a major blow in their bid to secure a deal to bring Gabriel Barbosa to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Anton Toloui, with the Sky Sports journalist revealing on Good Morning Transfers that, despite there being an offer on the table from West Ham, Gabigol’s agent has stated that the 25-year-old is happy in Brazil, and will only leave Flamengo for a bigger club than the Serie A side.

Speaking about the Hammers’ interest in the centre-forward, Toloui said: “You can see that a need [for a new striker] is increasing [for West Ham]. Gabriel Barbosa is the man they’ve targeted, the former Brazilian wonderkid who went to Inter [Milan] early in his career. It didn’t quite work, [he] went back to South America with Flamengo, won the Copa Libertadores and his stock is high again now.

“West Ham came in with a loan deal at the beginning of January – an 18-month loan with a view to a permanent move. Interestingly, his agent has come out over the weekend, Junior Pedroso, [and] told Globo in Brazil: ‘An offer did come in, the player is happy at Flamengo [and] he will only move back to Europe for a project that is bigger than the one he has currently at Flamengo’.”

Fans will be livid

With the signing of a new centre-forward very much being the priority for West Ham over the remainder of the January transfer window, the news that Gabigol appears to be unconvinced of a move to East London this winter is sure to have left Hammers fans livid.

Indeed, considering just how impressive the 25-year-old has been for Flamengo in recent seasons, the £23.4m-rated man would have appeared to make a fantastic addition to David Moyes’ current options in attack.

Over his 18 Serie A appearances last season, the Brazil international bagged 12 goals, provided five assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 3.6 shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £49k-per-week hitman earn a rather astonishing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.21, ranking him as Flamengo’s fourth-best player in the league.

The former Inter Milan forward also highly impressed over his 13 Copa Libertadores outings last term, scoring 11 goals, registering four assists and creating five big chances for his teammates – with these returns seeing Gabigol average an even more remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.57.

As such, it is clear for all to see that the signing of the 25-year-old would have been something of a coup for the Hammers, however, following Toloui’s latest update, whether Moyes will be able to convince the Brazilian of a move to the London Stadium this month appears very much up in the air at present.

Sky drop Healey to West Ham update

Taking to Twitter, journalist Dharmesh Sheth of Sky Sports has shared news out of West Ham United involving Toulouse striker Rhys Healey.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye French raid…

According to reliable reports, manager David Moyes and recruitment chief Rob Newman see the professional French football leagues as a real source of talent as they eye various Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 targets.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-copy/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

ExWHUemployee says that West Ham have three forwards on their radar from across the channel, with the likes of Hugo Ekitike of Reims, Bamba Dieng of Marseille and Jonathan David of Lille all attracting interest.

Now, sharing news on ‘another name’, Sky journalist Sheth has lifted the lid of yet another from the French second tier.

The Latest: West Ham eye 11th hour Healey move…

According to his sources, West Ham are also eyeing an 11th hour move for the former MK Dons and Cardiff City forward who has been in fine form for new club Toulouse.

He also says that the Irons ‘remain in talks’ for Ekitike and Healey is seen as more of a back up option.

“West Ham remain in talks over the signing of Reims striker Hugo Ekitike,” Sheth stated.

“Another name is Toulouse forward Rhys Healey. One to provide back up in the squad.

“The 27 year-old began his career at Cardiff and had spells with Colchester, Dundee, Newport, Torquay and MK Dons.”

The Verdict: Prolific option?

While he won’t come as a direct alternative to Michail Antonio, Healey could certainly have some merit as a back up for Moyes and has grown quite a stellar reputation in France.

Scoring a career total of 82 in all competitions for a variety of clubs, a large portion of those strikes have come during his time at the Stadium TFC.

Healey’s brilliant form in Ligue 2 has even earned comparisons to Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, as Toulouse supporters apparently dub him their version of the Foxes star (Total Football Analysis).

Depending on the price tag, it could be a fairly astute move if West Ham push it over the deadline day line.

Two clubs to fight Leeds for Aaronson

Leeds United reportedly face competition from AC Milan and RB Leipzig for the signing of RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson next summer.

The Lowdown: Aaronson stays put in January

Despite being endlessly linked with a move to Elland Road in the January transfer window, Salzburg ended up keeping hold of the 21-year-old. The Austrian club are still in the Champions League after progressing past the group stage and were clearly desperate not to lose a key player.

All hope is not lost for Leeds, though, and they are expected to again pursue a deal for the American in the summer.

The Latest: Leeds face summer competition for Aaronson

It may not be easy for the Whites to get their man, though, with journalist Manuel Veth claiming on Twitter that both Milan and Leipzig are also eyeing up Aaronson.

He outlined: “#LUFC not the only interested club in a potential summer move for Salzburg’s Aaronson. Both #Milan and #RBLeipzig are monitoring the situation. Also Leeds United are fighting relegation from the Premier League so a move right now is not ideal.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-33/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Primary target?

Given Aaronson’s age and potential, and the interest they have clearly shown, he will surely be at or near the top of Leeds’ summer transfer wish list. He has already proven himself in the Champions League – arguably the highest level in club football – starting all six of Salzburg’s group games this season.

Arguably most adept in a number 10 role, Aaronson could be a perfect foil for the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Adam Forshaw, bringing creativity in the final third, as highlighted by 12 assists in 51 games for Salzburg.

Hopefully Leeds’ lengthy pursuit of him will ultimately bear fruit, but with Marcelo Bielsa’s team peering nervously over their shoulders at a possible relegation battle and Milan and Leipzig both in contention to qualify for Europe, the Whites could have a big task on their hands to bring an attractive sales pitch to Aaronson.

Sunderland: Edwards offers Keane update

Roy Keane remains ‘close’ to becoming Sunderland manager, but an agreement still hasn’t been reached.Â

That’s according to The Telegraph’s Northern football writer Luke Edwards, who sounds unconvinced about the links to the former boss.

The lowdown: Two candidates

Sunderland are working to appoint a successor to Lee Johnson, who was sacked following a 6-0 battering at Bolton Wanderers in late January.

According to Football League World, they’ve interviewed two candidates in depth.

One is Keane, who was in charge at Sunderland between 2006 and 2008 but hasn’t managed since leaving Ipswich more than ten years ago.

And the other is Grant McCann, recently dismissed by the new owners at Hull City.

The latest: Still not done

A Sunderland fan told Edwards on Twitter that they are ‘eagerly awaiting updates on Keane as and when you get them’.

“Close but as things stand, no cigar,” the journalist replied at lunchtime on Tuesday.

The verdict: Ominous

Things are just starting to look a little ominous for those who want Keane at the helm.

On Monday, Edwards questioned whether the Irishman was ‘first choice’ in light of a report from The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope that the club are planning to hold a fresh round of interviews.

If Keane is ‘just a candidate’ rather than a frontrunner, Edwards ‘doubts he will come’.

Meanwhile, FLW have claimed that The Black Cats’ decision could hinge on wage demands, and the former Manchester United skipper has apparently named a ‘pretty substantial’ price.

With this latest update that they still haven’t come to terms in mind, it may be time to look more closely at McCann.

Celtic: Hoops finalise Jack Thomson move

Celtic have finalised a move for promising striker Jack Thomson, The Daily Record report.

The Lowdown: Doak departure

The Hoops look set to lose talented winger Ben Doak to Liverpool over the coming months.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Doak is yet to pen professional terms at Parkhead, meaning Celtic could receive just £150,000 for the 16-year-old’s services in compensation.

It now appears to be a case of one in and one out at the club’s academy, with an update emerging on Thomson.

The Latest: Thomson’s arrival

The Daily Record shared a story on Thursday morning, revealing some smart business by Michael Nicholson – Thomson has now signed a professional youth deal at Parkhead from Mossend FC.

The youngster was labelled as one of their most promising starlets and now joins a growing list of Lanarkshire players currently at Parkhead, including David Turnbull and Stephen Welsh.

The Verdict: Welcome news

Celtic needed some positive news during the international break following injuries to Tom Rogic, Johnny Kenny and concerns over Daizen Maeda’s fitness.

Thomson could well turn out to be a star of the future, with Mossend admitting the youngster will be a ‘huge loss’ to the club.

He now looks set to take his place in Celtic’s academy system, and hopefully, we will see Thomson in a senior Celtic squad in years to come.

Celtic: Ben Doak drops major exit hint

Celtic winger Ben Doak has dropped a major hint over his future on social media, Football Scotland have spotted.

The Lowdown: Close to Liverpool move

Doak has enjoyed a Glasgow breakthrough in 2022, making two Celtic appearances and attracting interest from both Chelsea and Liverpool.

The 16-year-old is yet to pen professional terms at Parkhead and is thought to be closing in on a move to Merseyside to join Liverpool.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Labelled as ‘fantastic’ by Ange Postecoglou, Doak scored a hat-trick for Scotland’s U17s during the international break, but the Hoops could potentially receive just £150,000 for his services.

The Latest: Social media activity

Football Scotland shared a story on Doak on Wednesday lunchtime, revealing the player has now followed Liverpool’s official Instagram page.

Doak has also given the Reds’ unofficial academy page a follow, hinting that a move to join the youth ranks at Anfield is imminent.

The Verdict: Unavailable for the run-in?

The young winger has made the bench three times alongside his two appearances since December, but it seems as if he could be on the move very shortly.

It looks as if Postecoglou is now resigned to losing his services after not including him in the last seven Premiership matchday squads.

He could be unavailable for the run-in, with a move to link up with former Celtic goalkeeper Liam Hughes at Liverpool’s academy looking like a formality at this point.

In other news: Sky Sports: Celtic have opened talks for another player as well as Bayern’s Christopher Scott.

Lyon dealt Caqueret blow for West Ham

As shared by the Hammers’ official website, Lyon have been dealt a blow for their clash with West Ham United as both sides gear up for a crunch evening in Europe.

The Lowdown: Big night ahead…

After sensationally knocking out La Liga giants Sevilla, who are also the Europa League’s most successful ever side, some West Ham supporters could be forgiven for dreaming of illustrious silverware or, at the very least, a notable run to the final four.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

David Moyes’ men battled to a memorable victory at the London Stadium against their Round of 16 competitors last time out with, perhaps most fittingly, Ukrainian Andriy Yarmolenko scoring the winner in added time.

West Ham’s 2-1 win on aggregate could be the start of a fairy-tale run with tonight’s clash in east London pivotal.

The Latest: Lyon without key star Caqueret…

Sharing some team news, West Ham relay their competitors will be without a key man in midfielder Caqueret after picking up a knee injury in training last week.

Although, despite early fears of Karl Toko-Ekambi joining Caqueret on the sidelines, their manager Petr Bosz has since confirmed that the former will be available.

The Verdict: Blow for Lyon…

Caqueret has been a real mainstay for the Ligue 1 giants this season with his absence coming as a real blow.

Described as ‘incredible’ by his manager Bosz and ‘crucial’ to Lyon by French media, WhoScored detail that only goalkeeper Anthony Lopes has played more top flight minutes for them than the 22-year-old this season.

In that time, the robust midfield gem has averaged an impressive 1.4 interceptions per 90, the third-most of any Lyon star, whilst also completing the fourth-highest amount of challenges (WhoScored).

Taking this into account, it’s safe to say Bosz may well miss his presence in midfield tonight, where Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek will surely be licking their lips at the weakend Lyon unit.

Liverpool: Origi closes on Milan move

Liverpool striker Divock Origi is ‘close’ to signing on the dotted line with AC Milan, Belgian journalist Sven Claes reports.

The lowdown

Origi signed for Liverpool from Ligue 1 side Lille in the summer of 2014 for a fee of £11.4million.

In the summer of 2019, on the back of scoring in both the Champions League semifinal and final, he penned a contract extension.

That deal is due to expire this summer, and while it does contain the option of a one-year extension, that will only be triggered if Origi makes a certain number of appearances.

The Belgian has played 172 games in total for the Reds, netting 40 goals and providing 17 assists.

He’s not the only Liverpool player out of contract at the end of the season, with James Milner, Adrian and Loris Karius also potentially set to leave as free agents.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-28/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Origi is on the verge of signing a four-year deal with the Serie A leaders, Claes tweeted on Friday morning.

He did caution it is ‘not a done deal yet’ because there’s ‘still paperwork to do’, but it certainly looks as if the 26-year-old is bound for the San Siro.

“Confirmed: Divock Origi (26) is close to sign a 4-year contract at AC Milan. Not a done deal yet. Still paperwork to do,” shared the journalist on Twitter.

The verdict

Back in December, Jurgen Klopp stressed that he regards Origi as a Liverpool ‘legend’ following his heroics against Barcelona and Spurs.

But the arrival of Luis Diaz at Anfield in January has appeared to push him further down the pecking order.

Since he returned from injury in the middle of February, he’s played only 141 minutes of football for the Reds across all competitions.

His last Premier League appearance came in the dying stages of a 6-0 victory over Leeds on 23 February, and he’s missed out on the last four matchday squads.

There’s a risk, then, that his looming departure winds up being fairly low key.

In other news, Sky Sports have revealed fresh Liverpool talks.

Everton must play Van de Beek vs Leicester

Everton will host Leicester City at Goodison Park this evening following a ten-day break to continue their pursuit for safety in the Premier League this season.

Frank Lampard will surely be hoping the much-needed rest for his team ahead of their remaining fixtures will give his team an advantage against their opponents this evening, and taking all three points from the game would put them even further ahead in their relegation battle.

The squad has seen another huge boost as two players will return from injury issues, with the Toffees boss confirming that Donny Van de Beek and Yerry Mina will be in contention to feature in the clash with the Foxes this evening.

With that being said, Lampard must unleash Van de Beek, putting the midfielder straight back into the starting line-up following his absence, to put pressure on Leicester’s defence.

The £22.5m-rated star who was hailed “unselfish” by Owen Hargreaves, sustained a small grade thigh injury in the warm-up in the game against West Ham last month and was also ineligible to play in the victory over his parent club Manchester United last weekend, so he has had a lengthy break to get back to fitness ahead of tonight’s game.

There is no doubt that the Dutch midfielder will be up for the challenge at Goodison Park, especially with the news that his former manager Erik ten Hag will be imminently announced as the new manager at Old Trafford this summer, so he will likely want to take the opportunity to impress to ensure when he returns to Manchester he will be in with a better chance of game-time.

Lampard can deploy Van de Beek in the attacking midfield role he once thrived in for Ajax thanks to the return of Fabian Delph, who could be part of the defensive partnership with Allan in tonight’s game, allowing the 25-year-old more freedom to be creative and focus on imposing a threat on Leicester, where he can terrify their defence.

Playing a huge part in Everton’s potential survival in the Premier League this season will be a great boost in the midfielder’s opportunities when his loan ends and ultimately can hugely benefit his current club, who are just three points clear of the relegation zone with eight games to go.

Ox backed to leave Liverpool this summer

Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will leave the club at the end of the season, according to former England goalkeeper and Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson.

The Lowdown: Lack of minutes for Ox

There was a time when the 28-year-old was a key player for the Reds back in 2017/18 but those days seem like a distant memory now, despite being hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Jurgen Klopp more recently.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-28/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been limited to just nine Premier League starts this season and he has been left out of matchday squads entirely of late, including the FA Cup semi-final against Man City on Saturday.

With the former Arsenal man out of contract in the summer of 2023, it could be that Liverpool decide to sell him at the end of the season.

The Latest: Midfielder backed to leave

That’s certainly what Robinson thinks will happen, with the ex-England man turned Sky regular pundit telling Football Insider that he expects Oxlade-Chamberlain to be at a new club in 2022/23.

The former Tottenham ace also claims Klopp’s midfielder will be ‘desperate’ to leave Anfield in search of playing time.

“It is a squad game. If he hasn’t got a game since February it is telling you that he is not really needed.  At this stage of his career, with the time he has left on his contract it looks like he will be leaving.

“To be part of a team challenging on all fronts is exciting. But it is only exciting if you are getting game time. Oxlade-Chamberlain will be fed up there. He will be desperate to play.

“The team was changed so much against Benfica so for him not to get a run out says a lot. He is far down the pecking order. He could leave because he will want to be playing.”

The Verdict: Suits all parties

It looks almost a certainty that Oxlade-Chamberlain will leave Liverpool this summer, given the manner in which Klopp is using him these days.

It makes sense for all parties for that to be the case, with the Englishman in need of regular football elsewhere, especially if he has any ambitions of making England’s World Cup squad later this year.

His time at Liverpool has reached its natural conclusion and young players such as Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are better options moving forward, as well as incoming signing Fabio Carvalho.

In other news, Liverpool are thought to be planning a new contract for one player. Find out who it is here.
