USMNT transfers: Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace now both reportedly pursuing Yunus Musah, while Columbus Crew's Max Arfsten could be closer to European exit

The USMNT Transfer Notebook tracks American player movements, with latest developments for those in the U.S. national team pool

The clock is ticking on transfers in both MLS and Europe, with the end of August marking a crucial period for the U.S. men’s national team. Several players face uncertain club futures, or need significant moves, to cement their place in Mauricio Pochettino’s World Cup plans.

In Italy, Yunus Musah's status continues to swing like a pendulum. Last week, it was reported he would stay at Milan, but now it appears both Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace are aggressively moving to acquire the talented midfielder, who has struggled for consistency in Serie A.

Josh Sargent is off to a torrid start, scoring in his first two games of the season. Yet, Norwich manager Liam Manning stressed that the striker could still be on the move. In MLS, Max Arfsten has been linked with a move all summer and it appears Real Salt Lake's talented youngster, Zavier Gozo, is drawing interest from a Belgian giant.

Premier League clubs face off for Musah?

Will he stay or go? That's seemingly been the question for months with Musah, a player with plenty of potential who has struggled to find a fit in AC Milan. Though Musah appeared to be set to stay after a strong preseason, Nottingham Forest emerged as a strong contender to sign the American, with the Athletic reporting the two clubs opened talks over a move.

Things took another turn on Tuesday. Forest reportedly wasn't willing to reach Milan's $40 million valuation, offering $35.1 million. That could open the door for another club to emerge in Crystal Palace, according to journalist Ciro Venerato. Musah's is Forest's No. 1 target, but they are already looking at alternatives if Milan aren't willing to accept their bid.

There are positives and negatives with both reported bids, as Forest clearly values Musah but had struggles integrating another American, Gio Reyna, two years ago. Palace features another USMNT star in Chris Richards, but already has a strong midfield with Adam Wharton and Daichi Kamada.

Will it be London or Nottingham or potentially Naples? Time will tell.

    Norwich preparing for Sargent's exit?

Sargent is arguably the hottest striker in the U.S. national team pool, scoring in both of Norwich's opening games. Despite Sargent wearing the captain's armband in the opener, Canaries boss Manning admitted the 25-year-old could still be on the move.

"I think the best practice is to be proactive with the work you do… With the interest, you’d be mad to not do anything behind the scenes to be prepared. So, of course, we want him to stay, but we have to be prepared if it doesn’t happen," the manager said.

While Sargent turned down a move to Wolfsburg earlier, he continues to be linked with other moves – including to Burnley and Leeds earlier this summer.

    Another American to Belgium?

In June, it was reported that Belgian side Genk were monitoring RSL teenager Zavier Gozo. Yet speculation suggests that they aren't the only club who are watching the U.S. youth international, who scored at the weekend for Real Salt Lake against the New York Red Bulls.

Gozo, 18, has been a breakout star alongside Diego Luna in the first team, and is expected to compete for a spot at the U20 World Cup this September.

“I don't really think about that," he said of a possible transfer. "I'm just focused on the season right now and getting as many wins as we can, making the playoffs. And then, you know, the offseason, we'll see."

Arfsten gives green light to Middlesbrough

The emerging wingback has been the subject of a transfer tug of war between Toulouse and Middlesbrough, but if reports out of England are to be believed, the Crew star has given a clear indication of his preference.

The Northern Echo is reporting Arfsten wants to go with Boro and has asked for a transfer from Columbus.

The sticking point remains price, as the English club's bid of $3 million was rejected by the MLS side – who insist they want to keep the 24-year-old until the end of the season.

If the deal goes through, it could be a promising for Arfsten, as manager Rob Edwards likes playing a system with attacking wingbacks, and currently features fellow USMNT midfielder Aidan Morris.

Donnarumma's agent Enzo Raiola has confirmed that the goalkeeper's future at Paris Saint-Germain is uncertain. He further admitted that nothing has been ruled out yet, although Donnarumma's first preference would be sign a new deal and extend his stay at Parc des Princes.

  • AFP

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Donnarumma, under contract with PSG until 2026, has emerged as a target for Inter as they seek a long-term successor to 36-year-old Yann Sommer. The move would be controversial, given Donnarumma’s roots at Inter’s fierce rivals, AC Milan. PSG’s interest in Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier could further reduce the Italian’s playing time, which could tempt him to seek a move elsewhere. Meanwhile, Manchester City and Juventus are also monitoring the situation closely, adding competition for the 26-year-old’s signature.

  • WHAT ENZO RAIOLA SAID

Speaking to (h/t Sempre Inter) on Thursday, Donnarumma's agent Raiola said: “We have a good relationship with the club. Gigio is happy in Paris, and his contract expires in 2026. It can only be a good thing to know that there’s interest from big clubs. I’d like to point out, though, that nothing has actually come about from the interested parties. We haven’t even thought about it because Gigio is happy at PSG.
Then, clearly, if we don’t agree a new deal, we’ll evaluate other options. We’re not ruling anything out yet.”

Iftikhar, Nawaz skittle New Zealand for 92 to hand Pakistan consolation win

Pakistan defended 134 in Christchurch as New Zealand lost 6 for 19 against spin

Ashish Pant21-Jan-20242:09

Shaheen: ‘Main aim of series was to build for T20 World Cup’

After four crushing losses, Pakistan had something to smile about at the end of a tough tour as they defended 134 to take the final T20I against New Zealand by 42 runs and keep the series scoreline to 4-1.Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi at the toss reckoned that on a used Christchurch surface spin was likely to play a role. He was proved right as Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz and Usama Mir combined to pick six wickets to bundle New Zealand out for 92, their second-lowest total on home soil.Batting first, Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman got 30s but most of the Pakistan batters suffered on a two-paced track to reach 134 for 8 in their 20 overs. New Zealand started the chase brightly, but the Pakistan spinners orchestrated a middle-overs collapse. Iftikhar led the way with 3 for 24, while Nawaz and Mir picked up frugal two-wicket hauls each as New Zealand were bowled out in 17.2 overs.

New Zealand struggle from the get-goFinn Allen started the chase brightly, smashing Afridi for a four around deep midwicket and then going one better against Nawaz in the same region. But, Rachin Ravindra, slotted into this game for Daryl Mitchell, failed to get going as he sliced Nawaz to short third for 1.Allen struck two more crisp fours off Afridi before falling to Zaman Khan, his miscued attempt taken well by debutant Haseebullah Khan diving forward at mid-on. The powerplay ended on 35 for 2.Iftikhar Ahmed trapped Tim Seifert lbw•Getty Images

Pakistan apply the spin choke

Once it got clear that the surface was aiding spin, Afridi went on an all-out spin squeeze. With the required rate climbing, Will Young tried to break the shackles by looking to slog sweep Nawaz. His attempt only reached as far as Iftikhar at deep backward square leg, who completed the catch on the second attempt. The day went from bad to worse for Mark Chapman. He dropped Babar Azam twice in the first innings, and was run out for 1. This was before Iftikhar ended Tim Seifert’s difficult innings of 19. He went for a reverse sweep to a straight ball, missed and was trapped right in front, with Pakistan’s review confirming the ball would have smashed into the middle pole.Mir then had Mitchell Santner caught and bowled while Iftikhar removed Matt Henry and Ish Sodhi in the same over as New Zealand collapsed from 53 for 2 to 72 for 8 in the space of 32 balls.Glenn Phillips tried his best to take New Zealand closer but with eight wickets down, it was a bridge too far even for the man in form. Afridi finished off the game with two wickets in two balls as Pakistan won with 2.4 overs to spare.

A powerplay to forget for Pakistan

Haseebullah Khan had a dream PSL debut season in 2023, where he walloped a 29-ball 50 against Karachi Kings . The same can’t be said about his T20I debut, which lasted all of three balls and ended with him advancing and getting a leading edge on an ungainly swipe to point. Pakistan took 11 balls to get their innings rolling and got their first boundary in the fourth over, courtesy Rizwan, but Babar struggled big time. He could only manage 4 off 15 in the powerplay with Pakistan crawling to 29 for 1 after the six overs.

A brief revival and another middle-order collapse

Sodhi put Babar out of his misery for a 24-ball 13 when he slogged a tossed-up wrong’un straight to Phillips at deep midwicket. With 53 for 2 after ten, Pakistan needed some impetus to get the innings flowing. That was provided by Fakhar. He laid into Lockie Ferguson, tonking him for two sixes before crashing Sodhi for a four and a six the next over. Southee returned and was taken for another six by Fakhar, but the bowler had the last laugh. The left-handed batter failed to pick a slower offcutter and could only mistime his heave to long-off to fall for a 16-ball 33.Nawaz came and went before Henry sent Rizwan packing for a run-ball-38, his swing across the line only travelling as far as deep square leg. Iftikhar then clubbed Henry straight to mid-off as Pakistan lost 4 for 16 in 22 balls.Abbas Afridi came in at No. 9 and hammered two sixes to take Pakistan past the 130-mark. For New Zealand, Southee, Henry, Ferguson and Sodhi managed two wickets apiece.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

AUSTIN, Texas – MLS came out on top in the 2025 All Star Game skills challenge, besting Liga MX, 4-2 across a captivating five-challenge slate on Tuesday night.

MLS took the lead in the first event, with Evander setting a new record with 72 points on the shooting challenge. Liga MX responded, though, as Brian Rodriguez led the way in a convincing touch challenge win. The third posed things nicely, with the honors split in the headers and volley challenge – largely thanks to hometown goalkeeper Brad Stuver making a flurry of saves as time expired.

"It was fun, because I wasn't trying to break the record. To do so was great," Evander said after the match. "I'm really happy because we won today."

USMNT legend Clint Dempsey did his part, appearing for MLS in the passing challenge and teaming up effectively with Evander to steer the momentum. Evander released ping after ping to see MLS through in the passing round to give the hosts a 3-2 lead. There was a chance for one last moment, too. Goalkeeper Yohei Takoaka provided it, floating a ball off the top of the crossbar to secure a win in the final challenge.

Orlando City SC's Alex Freeman, who was participating in his first All-Star experience and skills challenge, praised Evander's efforts.

"The experience was amazing," Freeman said. "It was a great experience to get to know the guys a bit more… Today we were able to win the challenge. We were all happy and we had fun out there…You saw it today [with Evander] he did very good on the shooting challenge. He was very good on all of the things he was doing. He created a lot of stuff so he showed his ability there and I did what I could do to help him."
