Arsenal fans buzzing with Matteo Guendouzi after north London derby draw

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal put in an impressive comeback against Spurs on Sunday afternoon after being stunned early by the visitors at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners were behind courtesy of goals from Christan Eriksen and Harry Kane, but Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ensured the game was drawn.

Unai Emery’s midfield had a rather defensive look to it with Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi starting together.

However, it was the latter who impressed the most, earning the assist for Arsenal’s second of the evening.

He earned a host of plaudits from fans on Twitter, as they struggled to contain themselves after his showing.

The 20-year-old was hailed as someone who could become a world-beater in two to three years, which was followed up by someone saying he deserves the captain’s armband in a similar sort of time frame.

A further individual suggested he puts Xhaka to shame after the Swiss conceded a penalty in the first half. He was also described as sublime.

Guendouzi arrived from Lorient last summer and rather surprisingly went onto feature in 33 Premier League matches in 2018/19.

Here’s the best of the reaction from his display at the weekend.

Manchester City: Fans react to record attendance at the Etihad Stadium

A new attendance record for the Women’s Super League in England was set at the weekend at the Etihad Stadium for the clash of Manchester City and Manchester United.

City won 1-0 in front of 31,213 supporters, which beat the previous attendance record at a home ground in women’s football more than six times over, as reported by BBC.

Manchester City also hold the record for the highest attendance in English domestic football history at a home ground when 84,569 people flocked to Maine Road for an FA Cup clash against Stoke in 1934. [via TalkSPORT].

Manchester City-focused Twitter channel @SuperbiaProelia pointed out the club’s status as holders of attendance records for both the men’s and women’s game in England.

Despite these record attendance figures, Manchester City’s home ground has been mockingly called the ‘Emptyhad’ by some rival supporters, as per The Sun, who reported that the average number of attendees at the ground was roughly 46,000 despite official figures of around 54,000 regularly being published.

These Manchester City fans took to Twitter to ridicule the club’s perceived reputation for low attendances:

Do you think the 31,213 attendance for a women’s game on Saturday was a one-off or will it become a regular occurrence this season in the Women’s Super League? Comment below with your views!

Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko disappoints on perfect day for Spurs

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers sethreeries, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Four first-half goals, a clean sheet and pressing their opponents well again – Saturday seemed like a perfect day for Tottenham Hotspur.

Not quite though, when you look at midfield mainstay Moussa Sissoko’s performance against Crystal Palace.

The France international has been an ever-present part of Spurs’ starting XI in the Premier League so far this season, and it was no different against the Eagles as he lined up alongside Harry Winks again in the middle of the park.

In that particular role, the 30-year-old acts as a box-to-box player who must contribute from both a defensive and offensive point of view, but he was simply anonymous against Roy Hodgson’s men at the weekend.

It may have been a relatively one-sided encounter, but the fact that the Frenchman failed to make a single interception, tackle or clearance, according to WhoScored, is still slightly surprising given Winks made three interceptions and one clearance.

That wasn’t the only shortcoming in Sissoko’s game though, who failed to have a shot or make a key pass, and who was inaccurate with both of the crosses he attempted – meanwhile, his midfield partner had four shots.

It wasn’t a vintage day for the former Newcastle United man, and it was probably a bad time to put in an ineffective display given the circumstances.

Firstly, Mauricio Pochettino may well choose to rotate his squad for the Champions League visit to Olympiacos on Wednesday, and the 30-year-old could be one of those in danger of dropping to the substitutes’ bench in that case, allowing whoever comes in a chance to impress.

Secondly, competition for places in that central midfield area is rife right now, with Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele and Eric Dier all having to settle for a place on the bench against Palace.

It was hardly the ideal time to drop an average display, and Sissoko may well end up paying the price of what was a rare blot on his copybook on a perfect day for the north London outfit.

Newcastle United: Fans hoping for Josef Martinez signing

Reports are suggesting that Newcastle United could be set to target adding another striker to their ranks.

According to The Chronicle, the Magpies are interested in signing Atlanta United forward Josef Martinez in January as they look to bolster their forward options.

The Venezuelan has been in outstanding form since moving to the MLS in 2017, scoring a staggering 76 goals in just 81 appearances.

He has recently broken a league record for scoring in consecutive matches (15) and is now aiming to match Lionel Messi’s world record of scoring in 21 consecutive club matches (via MLS Soccer.)

As it stands he has scored the same amount of goals this season as LA Galaxy star Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the MLS with 26 and is just two behind Carlos Vela in the race for the Golden Boot.

The Magpies may have an established scouting network in the United States after their pursuit of Miguel Almiron last year and lost a number of goals in the shape of Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon over the course of the summer. So far, attacking signings Joelinton, Andy Carroll and Allan Saint-Maximin have just one goal between them.

One thing is for sure, it would almost certainly be a popular signing with the club’s fanbase if the tweets below are anything to go off. Indeed, many of them have already taken to Twitter to express their hopes that Martinez will be donning the famous black and white shirt sooner rather than later.

West Ham’s Declan Rice pulls a hilarious prank on teammate Jack Wilshere

[ad_pod ]King Arthur…but with a twist. There’s a reason we used to huddle around the television screen all those years ago to watch You’ve Been Framed, and it’s a simple one: other people’s misfortune is far more entertaining and funny than our own.And while that makes us sound a little psychotic, just take a second to think about the last time you saw someone tripping over in the street on their way to work. We bet you laughed.Watch West Ham United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

That said, have you ever stuck your friend’s shoes to the ground so firmly that they can’t pick them up without destroying the sole? No, neither have we. That would be both cruel and expensive, and we have our limits.

Fortunately for our viewing pleasure however, West Ham United’s Declan Rice has a bottomless pit of cash, no moral boundaries and a number of unsuspecting victims at his mercy.

The midfielder posted the video to his Instagram story (via Amazon Prime Video Sport), and the results were quite hilarious…

Arsenal fans want Calum Chambers to win Player of the Month

[ad_pod ]

You wouldn’t necessarily know it looking at some of the reaction in recent weeks, but Arsenal have actually gone unbeaten in September.

They started with back-to-back 2-2 draws against Tottenham and Watford, before winning their next three games against Aston Villa, Eintracht Frankfurt and Nottingham Forest. The last two, in particular, were emphatic. In those two fixtures, the Gunners won 3-0 and 5-0 respectively.

Calum Chambers played a part in all three of the victories and has impressed at right-back. He has picked up a goal and three assists across those games.

His performances have led to him being named in Arsenal’s Player of the Month competition, and the club’s supporters have been voting in their droves. It seems as though the former Southampton man is a popular choice for the award too.

There have been a lot of comments on the Emirates outfit’s official Twitter page. You can see some of the best comments from the social media platform.

Liverpool fans slam Jordan Henderson’s Salzburg performance

Some Liverpool fans are fuming at the performance of captain Jordan Henderson, who was hooked after 61 minutes in the clash against Red Bull Salzburg.

The Austrian Bundesliga outfit tried to replicate the miracle of Istanbul at Anfield on Wednesday evening, coming back from three goals down in remarkable fashion.

Although Mohamed Salah eventually crushed the visitors’ hopes and dreams with a cool finish to make the final score 4-3, Reds fans are not best pleased with some of their players.

Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum in particular struggled, amassing WhoScored ratings of just 6.14 and 6.62 respectively.

Both players were withdrawn around the hour mark, and this is now the second time in as many games Jurgen Klopp has dragged his skipper off with the Reds not looking their best.

The 29 year-old managed no shots, key passes, dribbles, tackles, interceptions or clearances in the match, per WhoScored, and some fans are crucifying his display.

Man Utd fans happy they walked away from £50m Sean Longstaff deal

Manchester United were linked with a number of players over the course of the summer transfer window, but only three new signings were made by the end.

One man who was heavily touted over a move to Old Trafford, was Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff. The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, making nine appearances in the Premier League under Rafa Benitez.

Reports had suggested United were very keen on signing him, and a swoop appeared to be in line with their approach to signing young, promising British-based players.

However, a deal seemed to fall down over the price the Magpies were quoting for the midfielder, and now, BBC Sport claim Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side opted to walk away after hearing about the £50m asking price.

Having heard the reason why the club failed to sign Longstaff in the summer, United fans flooded to Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.

Many Red Devils supporters suggested they are glad the Englishman didn’t arrive, and insisted they didn’t need another “average” player on their books.

Some fans even remarked the news represented the “only good thing” they have heard in a while, and backed the club over their summer approach.

Liverpool’s Adrian shows support for Alisson as he returns from injury

Unfortunately, the Brazilian’s return will likely spell the end for Adrian’s time as Liverpool’s number one.

The Spaniard has hardly put a foot wrong between the sticks for the Merseyside club, as the Reds have conceded the fewest goals of any team in the league.

One could understand if Adrian wasn’t too pleased to see the 27-year-old back in training, but the former West Ham man posted a comment on his Instagram that shows just how good the team spirit is around Anfield, something Andy Robertson has also alluded to.

Adrian must know that Alisson’s return will likely see him return to the bench and stay there, but the fact that he’s so happy to see the Brazilian back in action just shows how much of a team player he is.

Leeds United’s best option to replace Nketiah is another loan deal

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

This may not be as complicated as it seems.

I’m sure that you have read the stories in recent days about Arsenal considering recalling Eddie Nketiah.

According to a report from Football London, Nketiah’s parent club are set to review the situation during next month’s international break. Nketiah has yet to start a league game this season, and Arsenal are reportedly not too happy with that and are considering recalling him in January.

So if Leeds United are presented with that scenario, should they consider buying someone to make up the shortfall, or should they go back into the loan market?

Well, the decision could be made a lot easier depending on whether or not another one of their players gets recalled as well. With reports also surrounding the future of Jack Clarke at Elland Road, it might be beneficial for Leeds if they allow Clarke to return to Spurs rather than keep him in the U23 team.

That would bring the total number of Leeds players on loan down to four, which would put them one short of the maximum amount of loan players you can have in a matchday squad. As a result, they wouldn’t be in the situation they’ve been finding themselves in lately, of having to leave one of them out of the squad every week.

So if it does play out that way, they may not have to buy someone to replace Nketiah – they could go back into the loan market. Given Leeds’ financial situation and ‘cautious approach’ when it comes to the transfer market, that could play right into the Yorkshire outfit’s hands.

Whilst there have already been calls for Leeds to swoop for Dwight Gayle from Noel Whelan, Newcastle United were adamant in the summer that they were not willing to let him go out on loan and a deal ultimately failed to materialise. That once again suggests loans are the priority for the club, so another temporary swoop would make the most sense.

This could all be unnecessary if Arsenal decide to give Leeds a second chance and let them keep the 20-year-old. But if push comes to shove, the Whites won’t be in a situation where they have to gamble the future away with one big signing in January.

That’s provided, of course, Leeds ship Clarke back to his parent club as well, otherwise Marcelo Bielsa will need a permanent purchase to avoid the same loan-based selection problems for every game this season.

But Leeds might just be able to be that little bit more frugal just a little bit longer.
