Dilshan and Vithanage blitz Sussex in record time

Sri Lanka scorched to a ten-wicket win in less than half the allotted overs to complete their warm-up matches ahead of the limited-overs series against England in dashing style

With the sun shining on the UK’s hottest weekend of the year so far, Sri Lanka scorched to a ten-wicket win in less than half the allotted overs to complete their warm-up matches ahead of the limited-overs series against England in dashing style. Tillakaratne Dilshan slashed and burned his way to an 18-ball half-century, with Kithuruwan Vithanage only a little more circumspect in his fifty from 22. No Sussex bowler managed to go at less than ten an over as 65 balls were left unbowled.Needing to score at little more than a run a ball, Sri Lanka’s openers thrashed 96 from the six-over Powerplay – more than the T20 international record 91 that Netherlands set against Ireland at the World T20 in March, though slightly less than Lahore Eagles made in a 2012 Faysal Bank match.Of their 128 without loss, 110 flowed in boundaries, as the Sri Lankans completed the fastest successful chase of a score of 125-plus. Their aggression made the Sussex innings appear as if it had been a donkey ride on the beach down at Hove seafront. When Vithanage struck his fifth six towards the Sri Lankan support at the Cromwell Road End, enthusiastic attempts to catch the ball caused the boundary board to collapse. Sussex had already buckled by then. After back-to-back games in the NatWest T20 Blast, Sussex made four changes for this match but they were not as understrength as the scorecard made it seem.Vithanage, 23 years old and with a handful of Test and ODI appearances to his name, crunched Steffan Piolet for three sixes in a row over midwicket as Sri Lanka cut their target in half by the end of the fourth over. The second bounced off the roof of the scoreboard on the east side of the ground and out into the neighbouring flats; its replacement went even further and another ball was immediately called for.So frequently was the ball flying to the rope that occasional dot balls were met with ironic cheers. Only the seventh over, bowled by Chris Liddle, did not contain any boundaries. The World T20 champions, without Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara for the first time since their retirements, dropped the needle straight back into its groove. They had looked in control at the halfway stage, when a Sri Lankan band played with some gusto. The music was of the pop filler variety as the chase got under way but it was still Sri Lanka that were calling the tunes.Playing their first 20-over match since the World T20 final (although their tour match at Essex was reduced to 21 overs per side), Sri Lanka fielded a much-changed side. Kusal Perera, Angelo Mathews and Nuwan Kulasekara were rested – though all are expected to be involved in the T20 against England on Tuesday – and, with Rangana Herath being preserved for the Test series, there were six changes to the XI that lined up against India in Dhaka.Dinesh Chandimal, the captain who dropped himself during the World T20 and has since been replaced by Lasith Malinga, took Sangakarra’s wicketkeeping gloves, with Vithanage, Ashan Priyanjan, Seekkuge Prasanna, Ajantha Mendis and Suranga Lakmal the other players to come in.Sussex began solidly enough, ending the Powerplay on 40 for 1, but opener Matt Machan was the only batsman to manage a substantial innings, his 63 providing exactly half of Sussex’s total. Thisara Perera throttled the scoring during the middle overs, finishing with 2 for 13 from his allocation, and Sussex only managed 12 boundaries; Sri Lanka’s 25 in less than half the overs showed how modest that effort was.Malinga brought himself on in the fourth over and struck almost immediately, removing Luke Wells, playing in only his second T20. Wells wants to play more limited-overs cricket for Sussex but this was not the bowler to make his case against.Michael Yardy, crabbily stepping into line from outside leg stump, drove Malinga for four during an otherwise laboured 11 off 25 balls, while Machan thumped Mendis and Sachithra Senanayake for sixes but Sri Lanka were able to keep on top of things without breaking into much of a sweat. Their fielding was not at its sharpest, Lahiru Thirimanne’s drop of Ben Brown suggestive of a sunny Sunday slackness, but there was intensity enough to come with the bat. The exhibition by Dilshan and Vithanage might have been enough for a crowd of around 5000 to forgive the early finish. One of the oddities of Sri Lanka’s World T20 triumph was that their only defeat came against England, a side that exited the tournament on the lowest note of a miserable winter by losing to Netherlands. The stage is nicely set for Tuesday’s rematch at The Oval.

Brathwaite, Bravo tons put WI in command

West Indies’ top order produced a commanding performance on an extended second day to take an 89-run lead in the Trinidad Test

The Report by Devashish Fuloria17-Jun-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDarren Bravo’s sixth Test century was his first in the West Indies•WICB

West Indies’ top order produced a commanding performance on an extended second day to take an 89-run lead in the Trinidad Test. Kraigg Brathwaite and Darren Bravo didn’t let the hour-long rain break affect their concentration and partnered to put up 182 for the fourth wicket to take the team well past New Zealand’s score. The bedrock of West Indies’ response was a composed Brathwaite, who went on to complete his maiden Test century, while Bravo, with his first Test hundred in the West Indies, was the driving force.New Zealand’s bowlers strove but the Queen’s Park Oval pitch was at its best from a batting perspective. There was occasional lateral movement for the seamers and some inconsistent bounce for the spinners, but not to an extent to cause many alarms. It still required application from the batsmen, though.Brathwaite had been guilty of not being able to carry on the last four times he had gone past fifty. Today, however, he concentrated hard, using the classical Test approach of grinding the opposition and went past his previous best of 68. Boundaries were not his preferred mode of scoring – five, four and four came in the three sessions – so it was fitting that a single in the 68th over took him to his century – the first by any batsman in Port-of-Spain in five years.New Zealand tried to play on Brathwaite’s patience by sticking to a line outside off, inviting the drives. Brathwaite, though, stayed a step ahead and only pushed at the deliveries when either the length was too full or short enough. Only five of his 13 boundaries came through the off side, three of which were through gully.Throughout the innings, he kept one end watertight, scoring consistently at a strike rate of around 50 – his half-century came off 100 balls and the hundred in 199 balls – but fell to a tired push back to Trent Boult towards the end of the day. He made 129 off 258 balls.Bravo’s penchant for flashy strokes kept the bowlers interested. He was lured into tentative pokes by away-going deliveries from Boult and was drawn into false strokes against spin. But when the ball hit the middle, didn’t it look pretty? Bravo’s innings had started with a brace of on-drives against Ish Sodhi. Twice, Tim Southee was punched on the up through covers. Then a length delivery from Mark Craig was nonchalantly flayed over mid-off, landing just short of the boundary. These were manufactured shots, in line with Bravo’s flair. As the bowlers tired out and New Zealand waited for the new ball, Bravo grew in comfort and unfurled the big shots. Sodhi, the legspinner, was lofted for sixes thrice in nine balls. In between, when Sodhi dropped it short, Bravo was quick to rock back and punch it through cover. He moved into the 90s with a crisp cover drive off Jimmy Neesham in the 71st over, then completed his sixth Test century in the next with a push through off.Eighty-two runs came in 18 overs after tea. In the 19th – the last over before the new ball became available – Bravo attempted a big hit against the spin of Kane Williamson, but spliced it to long-off. Bravo was palpably disappointed on his dismissal at a crucial stage. West Indies lost Brathwaite nine overs later but Shivnarine Chanderpaul saw them through the tricky period. The tone of West Indies’ innings was set by a 93-run stand between Kirk Edwards and Brathwaite in the first session.New Zealand would have hoped to see more of the swing their seamers extracted during the mini-session at the end of the first day. The conditions, though, had become slightly better for batting. Edwards wasn’t shy of coming forward to deliveries that were pitched up. His first boundary – a straight drive through mid-off off a full Boult delivery – signalled West Indies’ approach in the session. That positivity was reinforced the moment Craig, New Zealand’s best bowler in the first Test, was introduced. Edwards planted his front foot out at the first sign of flight and launched the offspinner over long-on.The early counter forced Craig to switch ends and move to a round-the-stumps line, negating some of the advantage he may have held after the first game. The introduction of Neesham after the first drinks break only hastened the flow of runs. The first eight overs in the second hour brought 55 for West Indies as boundaries were found with ease: Neesham’s wide deliveries were smashed convincingly by Edwards while Brathwaite took a liking to Craig’s spin, using the slog twice in the 25th over to catch up with Edwards. Edwards remained severe on the flighted deliveries, hoicking Craig for two more sixes, the last one bringing up his seventh Test half-century, from 55 balls. Edwards, though, fell soon after for 55 in Sodhi’s first over. New Zealand had to wait for almost 49 overs for the next breakthrough.

Chhattisgarh push for own Ranji team

The September meeting of the BCCI could offer up a new Ranji Trophy team, should Chhattisgarh be recognised as the 31st full member of the BCCI

Amol Karhadkar04-Jul-2014

So far, Chhattisgarh’s only brush with top-quality cricket was when Delhi Daredevils’ played two of their home games at the newly-constructed stadium in Naya Raipur in IPL 2013•BCCI

The September meeting of the BCCI could offer up a new Ranji Trophy team, should Chhattisgarh be recognised as the 31st full member of the BCCI. Officials of the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh are hoping they will move up from being an affiliate member of the BCCI, to its full member ranks. After dominating the BCCI associates and affiliates championship for a couple of seasons, Chhattisgarh have been elevated into all the BCCI junior tournaments. According to Rajesh Dave, secretary of the CSCS, that in itself is an admission on the BCCI’s part that the state is ready to compete at the highest level.”Had our players not been of the required standard, the board wouldn’t have promoted us to the Plate Group of the Under-19 and Under-25 tournaments. After earning the requisite experience for two years, the Under-25 players feel they are ready to take the next step forward,” Dave told ESPNcricinfo. “We sincerely hope that the efforts of the players and the association are recognized, especially since we have fulfilled the basic criteria set for earning the status of a full member.”According to the BCCI regulations, an associate member can be promoted as a full member if the said member “is an Associate Member for a continuous period of five cricketing seasons, and such a member satisfies the board that the game in its jurisdiction has reached a standard justifying its participation in the national tournament of Ranji Trophy.”If the board has to grant the status of a full member on receipt of an application from the associate member, it must appoint a special committee “which the board shall consider at its next General Body Meeting. The recommendations of the special committee for the promotion shall be accepted if it is passed by 3/4th majority of the members present and voting. The board may reject any application for promotion without assigning any reasons therefore.”Last season, the Chhattisgarh Under-16 and Under-25 teams finished at the bottom of their respective groups in the Vijay Merchant trophy’s zonal league and CK Nayudu Trophy’s plate league, respectively. Their Under-19 team, however, finished third in their group in the Cooch Behar Trophy plate league and missed qualifying for the semi-finals of the lower tier by a whisker.Till now, Chhattisgarh’s only brush with top-quality cricket was when Delhi Daredevils’ played two of their home games at the newly-constructed Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Naya Raipur in 2013. Dave said that the plush stadium is “one of the 10 stadiums in the state that can host first-class games”.At the moment, despite their dire financial situation, CSCS conducts an inter-district tournament for all age groups in which 19 teams – 18 districts and the Bhilai Steel Plant as an invitational team – participate annually. The tournament, with an incentive to represent the state team, has given a ray of hope to kids in the state which has been dealing with a severe Naxal threat. As an associate member, CSCS gets an annual grant of Rs 75 lakh (Rs 7.5 million) from the BCCI. If they are awarded Ranji status, the association will earn at least Rs 20 crore (Rs 200 million).Dave believes that the full member status can help CSCS take their endeavour to the next step. “At the moment, we are making our ends meet somehow since the money that we get from the board is a paltry amount,” he said. “If we are awarded the full member status, the inflow of funds from the BCCI will help us take the game all over the state. Most importantly, the players can earn their livelihood solely on cricket.”BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said it will be up to the AGM in September whether to consider Chhattisgarh’s request. “It is an AGM issue. At the moment, it’s difficult to confirm whether it will be discussed in the AGM or not,” Patel told ESPNcricinfo. “If the AGM feels it’s appropriate to take the next step forward, it will surely constitute a special committee to inspect the progress Chhattisgarh has made.”A populist view among the BCCI members is that Chhattisgarh’s case will remain pending even this September, just as it was in the last AGM. The primary reason, as cited by many members, is the lack of will at the top. With the Supreme Court watching its every move, the BCCI has been walking on a tight rope. If the ambiguity surrounding the status of the BCCI chief – at the moment, the apex court has appointed two chiefs as N Srinivasan’s replacement – continues ahead of the AGM, then Chhattigarh’s wait might continue into the new season.Besides, addition of a full member would mean change in the voting pattern in the BCCI. For a body that has only 30 voting members, a rise in the number of votes by a solitary vote may mean a lot in an election scenario. As a result, Chhattisgarh may just have to make do with junior tournaments for another year or two.If that happens, Dave fears the state will lose some of its main players. “The top Under-25 players want to play in the Ranji Trophy now and if our request is not heard, we fear that we will lose some of our players to other teams.”In any case, at the moment, at least ten players who hail from Chhattisgarh are playing for various teams in domestic cricket. I just hope that the BCCI takes the future of young cricketers from the state into account and grants the status of a full member to us.”Chhattisgarh, along with the Sikkim Cricket Association, Manipur Cricket Association and Bihar Cricket Association (not Cricket Association of Bihar which has been in a litigation with the BCCI) are BCCI’s associate members. Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal happen to be affiliate members.
