Wade not warned over pitch tampering

Matthew Wade has said he had no warning from the umpires on field before he was suspended for pitch tampering and declared that he had done “the same thing” in every Sheffield Shield match he had played. Wade, the Victoria captain, was banned for one match after Cricket Australia found him guilty of altering the state of the pitch during Victoria’s recent match against Tasmania at Bellerive Oval.Cricket Australia said in a statement that Wade had been found guilty of “creating a long valley within the protected area by means other than natural wear and tear” while he was batting in Victoria’s first innings. Wade was reported by the umpires for breaching the section of the Code of Behaviour that deals with “unfair play”, and the match referee Daryl Harper upheld the report.Wade was fined 50% of his match fee and suspended for one Shield game, a penalty that was upheld despite an appeal from Wade and Cricket Victoria. On-field umpires warn bowlers against running on the so-called “danger area” of the pitch in their follow-throughs and can also warn batsmen against running down the middle of the pitch, but Wade said he had no indication from the officials that anything he did while batting was considered a problem.”No, I had no indications,” Wade said on Thursday. “I got told on the last day, before the fourth day. That’s when I found out. We went to the hearing that night and then I had a hearing a few days later. No real word during the game.”Wade scored 119 during the innings in question, on a challenging Hobart surface, and he was at the crease for 208 deliveries across two days without any warning from the umpires. Although he was unwilling to describe the actions that got him in trouble, Wade said he believed he had done nothing wrong and nothing different to usual.”It’s a bit hard to go into. There’s been plenty of appeals and I’ve had my chance to say what I’ve had to say,” Wade said. “The people who need to hear what has happened have heard what my side of the story is. I’m not going to stand here and go into the appeal, what I said in the appeal is the truth and exactly as I saw it, and the people who need to hear it have heard it.”It’s alleged that I was tampering with the pitch, that’s all I can say … My initial reaction was it wasn’t a big deal. To find out that I’d got suspended wasn’t ideal and I was disappointed with everything that went on, and disappointed with myself for putting myself in that situation. But it is what it is, I’ve got to move on and own that now.”I’ve played 70 Shield games and I’ve done the same thing every Shield game. The wicket was a little bit more underdone than probably what I’m used to playing on. I’ve got to be a little bit more aware of those situations and make myself better.”Wade is preparing to resume his place in the Victoria side for their match against South Australia, starting at the MCG on Friday. He said the most difficult part of the saga was to travel with the squad to Perth before his appeal, and then to have to watch them suffer an innings defeat at the hands of Western Australia without being able to help them on field.”It’s been disappointing to say the least,” Wade said. “A week ago the allegations came out and I went to an appeal and the rest is history. It’s been disappointing but the hardest thing was to watch the boys in Perth. I was over there trying to do my bit, trying to help out and do a little bit of coaching.”

Pietersen fights but Australia on top

A world record crowd of 91,092 at the MCG sat with admirable patience as a tentative England nudged and scraped against Australia’s unrelenting bowlers on Boxing Day

The Report by Daniel Brettig at the MCG25-Dec-2013

Same old story for England

Never in the field of Test match conflict were so few runs watched by so many. A world record crowd of 91,092 at the MCG sat with admirable patience as a tentative England nudged and scraped against Australia’s unrelenting bowlers on Boxing Day.Kevin Pietersen’s unbeaten 67 epitomised the tourists’ determination to improve but also their flaws. A softly, softly approach took him past Geoff Boycott on England’s list of all-time run scorers but also offered up a pair of chances that conveyed the confidence lacking among Alastair Cook’s men. It was not hard to escape the feeling that had the Ashes still been at stake one or both might have been taken. This is not to say Australia’s bowlers failed to replicate the pressure they have applied so successfully in the first three Tests. On the contrary, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle and Mitchell Johnson all delivered spells of the highest quality, let down only by the slowness of the pitch and the occasional fielding lapse.Johnson’s burst with the second new ball had the enormous crowd baying as their forebears once did for Dennis Lillee. The din was rewarded with the wickets of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow in a sequence that left England staring at an inadequate first innings despite all their stubbornness. Shane Watson’s complaint of groin soreness left Michael Clarke one bowler short, but early wickets on day two would still leave him satisfied with the decision to send the tourists in to bat.A leg bye to Harris’ second ball of the morning had given England the lead in a match for the first time this series, emblematic of their struggles so far. Cook was in a quite positive frame of mind however, cutting Johnson behind point and driving him through cover to cause Clarke to call upon Siddle after only two costly overs from his left-arm slinger, then follow up with a quarter of early overs from Nathan Lyon.At the other end Harris gained some useful movement, and Michael Carberry was squared up by a delivery that seamed away after straightening onto the line of the stumps. The resultant edge seemed destined for Clarke’s hands at second slip, but Steve Smith dived eagerly across from third and deflected it from the path of his captain – a rare missed chance for Australia in this series.Cook evaded one speculative appeal for caught behind from Harris when ball brushed pad rather than bat, but his evident desire to get bat on ball would result in his downfall. Siddle changed ends to replace Harris, and soon angled across Cook, who sparred unwisely at one he might have left and snicked it straight to Clarke.Joe Root appeared hesitant to come forward on a pitch offering seam deviation to those bowlers who deigned to search for it, his preference to sit on the crease enhanced by a Johnson delivery that reared into his shoulder. Siddle beat Root’s outside edge numerous times as the interval ticked near, but the Englishmen survived to lunch.Mitchell Johnson’s late strikes with the second new ball made it Australia’s day•AFP

For all his effort, Carberry has often followed a curious batting pattern this summer, invariably starting briskly before losing momentum and eventually tenure as the bowlers tighten their grip. Almost as often the Australians have brought about his dismissal by trying a line from around the wicket. It happened again not long into the afternoon, when Watson broke one back from that angle to tip off the bails as Carberry shouldered arms.Root’s occupation was seldom anything other than uncertain, his bat groping at many deliveries moving in the air and off the seam. While Siddle had been responsible for most of these balls, it was Harris who claimed the wicket, the first projectile of a new spell sliding away after pitching and taking a thin edge through to Brad Haddin – the wicketkeeper’s 50th for 2013.The quality of Australia’s bowling left England battling for survival and more or less giving up on scoring for long periods. A sequence of 12 overs reaped that many runs exactly, while Harris at one point sported figures of 14-8-15-1. After Watson’s pained exit, Pietersen sought to redress the balance, swivelling to hook Harris but making contact more top-edge than middle. The substitute fielder Nathan Coulter-Nile took the catch with a slight jump, but upon discovering how close he was to the boundary rope back-pedalled furiously and tried to hurl the ball skywards, without success. A six pushed Pietersen’s score forward, while also offering him the sliver of luck he has appeared to lack for much of this tour.Into the evening session Harris, Siddle, Lyon and Johnson did not allow England much in the way of elbow room, bowling tightly and moving the ball enough to keep the batsmen hesitant. Bell’s stand with Pietersen was worth 67, most of them accrued almost by stealth, pinching runs here and there as though waiting for when the hosts were not looking. This approach kept the bowlers in a confident frame of mind, and it was no great surprise when Harris conjured a little away seam to find Bell’s edge and offer Haddin another catch. Pietersen continued to struggle on, his innings interrupted somewhat theatrically when he complained of nausea and twice called for drinks to help clear his system. He offered a second chance, this time pulling to George Bailey at midwicket, but raised his bat wearily for 50 around the time the attendance surpassed the 90,800 who walked into this ground in 1961 on day two of the fifth Test of the 1960-61 series between Australia and the West Indies.Stokes offered rather more dynamism, busily collecting 14, but was to fall prey to the second new ball in the hands of Johnson. He was a little too late and inside the line of a fullish delivery, resulting in an edge to Watson, now fit for slips catching if not bowling. Johnson’s pace proved far too much for Matt Prior’s replacement Jonny Bairstow, who was bowled between a rather large gap between bat and pad after upper cutting one skittish six over the slips.Pietersen and Tim Bresnan scrounged their way to stumps, but a day of obstinacy had earned England only the most meagre of bridgeheads in front of a throng that might have hoped for more.

Rain forces abandonment after Hales' charge

There was rain and Alex Hales in Hobart but no result was achieved as inclement weather allowed just 36 deliveries to be bowled

ScorecardThere was rain and Alex Hales in Hobart but no result was achieved as inclement weather allowed just 36 deliveries to be bowled. It was enough time, however, for the Englishman and his opening partner, Michael Klinger, to provide some spectacular highlights in the gloomy conditions. After a 96-minute delay, the game was reduced to eight overs-a-side. There were two tosses that ended in one win apiece, as Strikers captain Johan Botha kindly offered to redo the first after the coin slipped out of the young mascot’s hand.Alex Hales hit nine fours and a six in his 19-ball 49•Getty Images

Botha was regretting that when George Bailey won the toss the second time and inserted Adelaide in to bat, but Klinger pulled the first ball of the innings powerfully for four to appease any frustration. The Strikers took 15 from Joe Mennie’s first over before finding the pace and angle of Doug Bollinger harder to get at. The greasy ball was a nightmare for spinner Xavier Doherty to grip in the third over and Klinger cashed in, lofting the bowler inside-out over wide long-off for six and thrashing a knee-high full toss through point. Then Hales swung violently at Bollinger in the fourth over and top-edged three times over the wicketkeeper’s head for two frustrating fours and a two. There were no edges thereafter, as Hales took down Evan Gulbis, striking four boundaries and a six in an over, hitting all corners of the Bellerive Oval with crisp blows on both sides of the pitch. Gulbis got his revenge with a missile throw from the fence to run Hales out for 49. Klinger faced just one more delivery before rain had the final say and the points were shared.

Incredibly satisfying to lead 3-0 – McCullum

Brendon McCullum has termed it “incredibly satisfying” to have defeated world champions India 3-0 in Hamilton with a game to go

‘Big win for us’ – McCullum

Brendon McCullum has termed it “incredibly satisfying” to have defeated world champions India 3-0 in Hamilton with a game to go. The decisive win came on a Seddon Park pitch offering turn and bounce to the India spinners and McCullum said that was why it was an even more creditable achievement.”First and foremost, to beat a very, very good team in India, and today as well in these conditions, I thought it was more favourable to them than what it was for us,” McCullum said. “To win as emphatically as we did and continue the blueprint that we have shown with the bat built around Roscoe and Kane’s performances in the last four games and to execute that again tonight and get the rewards for it is incredibly satisfying. The boys are very, very happy at the moment.”New Zealand have now beaten South Africa and England away and India at home in one-day series in the last 12 months. McCullum said sealing this one even before the fifth match in Wellington against what was the top one-day side when it came to New Zealand was quite something. “This is a big one for us. We are obviously proud with what we achieved in South Africa and England [in] those one-day series. Just focussing on the one-day game. But this one, the No. 1 ODI team in the world when they arrived here and how dominant their batting line-up is as well. To have tipped them up and be sitting after the fourth game at 3-0 is a pretty good achievement for us.”We closed out the series which we have been talking about all the way through the summer, so really pleased with the effort tonight and how emphatically we did it as well in really tough conditions. And we still managed to see guys hold their heads and play an innings of true class. Really satisfying win.”Kane Williamson’s four consecutive fifties have played a big role in New Zealand’s 3-0 series lead•Getty Images

After the match, a small group of fans stood outside the ground holding a banner that said “No Thanks” to the BCCI, Cricket Australia and the ECB. As laudable as the result on the field was for New Zealand, it also held a different significance, coming as it did just as the ICC met to consider the proposal to shift monetary and decision-making control to the three big cricket boards. Although McCullum would not comment on that aspect, he did say he was pleased that New Zealand had shown the world they could overcome topopposition.”That’s something we can’t comment too much about, way above our head but what we can do is go about playing good cricket and trying to impose ourselves on the world game and show that we are capable of playing against the very best teams in the world and having success. I wouldn’t say it was a motivating factor for us but we are just delighted to be able to play against a team of that class, come out on top and show the rest of the world that we are a very good team in our own conditions.”McCullum added it was important New Zealand pushed for making it 4-0 in Wellington, but felt tonight was the time for his men to soak in what they had accomplished. “That’s what we want to strive for,” he said. “But we won’t let this opportunity to really enjoy what we have achieved pass us by either. I think it’s a hell of an achievement, what we have done tonight. We will worry about the next couple of days tomorrow morning when we wake up. But we are obviously delighted at the moment.”
