'Felt I could get out at any time' – de Villiers

De Villiers’ started off at almost a run-a-ball, approached the New Zealand bowlers with the most positive of mindsets and kept attacking them, but later revealed that he actually felt tentative and anxious throughout his innings

AB de Villiers: “I never really felt in … The ball was moving around nicely.”•AFP

If ever a score was misleading in the way it was obtained, it was AB de Villiers’ 83. De Villiers’ started off at almost a run-a-ball, approached the New Zealand bowlers with the most positive of mindsets and kept attacking them, but later revealed that he actually felt tentative and anxious throughout his innings.”I felt under pressure the whole time. I felt I could get out at any time,” de Villiers said at the end of day two. “There’s something there [for the bowlers] and if you get a bit loose out there you’re going to lose your wicket. That’s what I felt the whole time. I never really felt in. I think that sums it up really nicely. You’re just never in. You can’t let go of your concentration for one minute.”De Villiers occupied the crease from mid-morning to late in the South Africa innings. He was a spectator to the collapse, which resulted in them teetering on 88 for 6, and was the architect of the recovery, ushering the tail past New Zealand’s total. None of that sounds particularly easy and de Villiers confirmed that it wasn’t. “They bowled extremely well, especially Mark Gillespie, they just never let go,” he said. “The ball was moving around nicely. Obviously, they looked after the ball well, it was swinging both ways.”Although day two was talked up as a batting day, with clear skies and fairly warm sunshine, de Villiers said there was enough in the surface and the air to assist the bowlers. “There’s a bit more swing with the sun out, when it gets a bit warmer,” he said. “It’s weird because you say you want overcast conditions [for swing]. But it probably moves around a bit more off the seam when it’s overcast and it swings a bit more when it’s warmer.”He lauded the New Zealand pitches for being “really good Test wickets” and ensuring that they are “no boring sessions”, but was visibly upset with the part South Africa’s line-up played in maintaining the excitement. While a middle-order collapse has become an all too familiar thing this summer, de Villiers said it had a lot to do with incisive bowling. “You can never ever take it away from the bowling,” he said. “I won’t say that the top six have failed because it’s just poor batting … that will be very unfair towards the bowlers.”When the same thing happened in Dunedin and South Africa were bowled out for under 250, Graeme Smith revealed that a stern talking to from Gary Kirsten had put the pieces back together for their second innings. While de Villiers did not say whether the same thing had happened here, he said the same mistakes that had been made at University Oval were committed by the line-up at Seddon Park. “We were very disappointed with the way we played,” he said. “I’m not going to sit here and say I am very proud of that knock. I thought we did well [in the end] but all in all, we’re very disappointed with the way we played out there.”Neither team has shone with the bat so far, which makes identifying a target that will be relatively simple to chase close to impossible for de Villiers. “I can’t tell you what’s going to be a good total to chase down here, I don’t think any of us are sure at the moment,” he said. But, with New Zealand not even in the lead yet and four of their best batsmen back in the change-room, South Africa will feel in control. “We’d like to get a couple of early wickets tomorrow, to make things a bit easier for us,” de Villiers said.

Mahela Jayawardene wants to find new captain

Mahela Jayawaradene has reiterated that his current role as Sri Lanka captain is a short-term job and he wants to find his successor as soon as possible

Mahela Jayawardene has reiterated that his current role as Sri Lanka captain is a short-term job and he wants to find his successor as soon as possible. He accepted a request to captain the team again after Tillakaratne Dilshan lost the post following the tour of South Africa and the results have been creditable so far, especially in the CB Series in Australia where they pushed the hosts to a third final, and then the Test series against England which ended 1-1. Jayawardene also claimed the Man-of-the-Series award after scoring 354 runs including two centuries. However at 34, Jayawardene, who has now linked up with the IPL along with a number of his team-mates, knows he is coming towards the end of his career and sees a large part of his role now as ensuring a smooth transition to a new long-term captain.”I’ve been given the challenge to lead the team and took that for 12 months to see what happens,” he said. “I would love to groom another leader and hand it over to him as quickly as possible. That’s the way Sri Lanka cricket should move on.”But Jayawardene has no immediate plans to reconsider his future in the international game. After a short-term slump in Test cricket, where he did not reach fifty in 12 innings, his results during the England series showed a batsman at the top of his game.”After the World Cup I spoke to the selectors and said I’d take it six months at a time,” he said. “It all depends on the hunger I have. So long as I’m performing to the standards I’ve set myself I’ll play for a little longer, but when the hunger goes that will be the day I quit.”Sri Lanka’s next engagement in Test cricket is against Pakistan following the IPL. There are a number of areas that they will need to address, not least the opening batting combination which failed to produce any solid starts. Lahiru Thirimanne was worked over by James Anderson while Tillakaratne Dilshan was stuck in one-day mode until the second innings in Colombo where he fell to a controversial review.Jayawardene, though, does not want to jump to any conclusions about what changes may be needed and insists consistency will bring rewards in the longer term.”I said before the series that Lahiru was given a chance in South Africa and I wanted to be consistent and give him a decent run before we make judgements on players,” he said. “Now we’ve got a break before our next Test series so that gives us an opportunity to sit down with the selectors and discuss where we need to improve or if we need to make changes. It’s a good place to be in because we’ve been consistent with our selections.”Rangana Herath, who took 19 wickets in the two Tests, will also need greater support in the bowling attack if he is not to be overburdened by the role of needing to take wickets and keep scoring rates down. Suraj Randiv partnered him well in Galle but struggled in Colombo where he was taken apart by Kevin Pietersen and by the end of the match Dilshan was the preferred offspinner.”Rangana is the best bowler I have and you obviously bank on him,” Jayawardene said. “The challenge I have is to try and not do the same thing we did with Murali (Muralitharan) and leave it as one bowler we depend on. We need two or three bowlers so we can take the pressure off him. But Rangana will keep delivering, he has the quality to do that on any surface.”

No treino desta quinta, ele priorizou as finalizações e cruzamentos.

Clarke deepens Lancs anxiety

When Rikki Clarke bats as fluently as he did in making 140 for Warwickshire against Lancashire on the third day at Liverpool, it is inevitable that good judges will speculate about what he might have achieved.

Rikki Clarke often responds to questions about his “unfulfilled talent” with a roll of the eyes and the deadest of verbal bats. All the same, when the Warwickshire all-rounder bats as fluently as he did in making 140 against Lancashire on the third day at Liverpool, it is inevitable that good judges will speculate about what he might have achieved with a little more consistency and, perhaps, a little more application.Clarke’s innings could not have been better timed, and neither could many of his shots. He joined Darren Maddy seven overs into the day’s play with his side on 81 for seven, still needing 19 runs to avoid being asked to follow-on. Smoothly shrugging off the prospect of such an indignity by lifting Simon Kerrigan for the first of his three sixes, Clarke then proceeded to change the character and tempo of the contest. The former Surrey and Derbyshire batsman shared an eighth-wicket partnership of 224 runs with the admirable Maddy, whose 112 was his first championship century for nearly four years. Their stand fell just four runs of the county’s all-time eighth-wicket record set by Bob Wyatt and Alf Croom against Worcestershire in 1925. More significantly, it meant that instead of conceding a substantial first-innings deficit, Warwickshire were able to take a 79-run lead into the second half of this fluctuating game.By the close of play Lancashire were only 35 runs behind but they had lost four choice wickets, three of them to the new ball. Stephen Moore, who has yet to pass 20 in eight first-class innings this year; Paul Horton, who gloved a lifting delivery to Tim Ambrose; and Karl Brown were all claimed by the impressive left-arm seamer Keith Barker. Then, immediately after being dropped by Clarke off Barker, Steven Croft very unwisely slog-swept Jeetan Patel to Neil Carter at deep square leg to complete Lancashire’s miserable day. Warwickshire will go into the fourth morning with buoyant expectations that they can clinch a remarkable victory.Indeed, the only good news for Lancashire supporters on Saturday arrived around teatime when Old Trafford officials confirmed that Junaid Khan has been given permission to play for them in both t20 and championship games this season. The Pakistani fast bowler is expected to arrive at Old Trafford in June.By then we will have a better idea of whether Lancashire are in anything like decent shape to defend their title. The evidence of the first two games is not especially encouraging for them.Yet it is key to an understanding of the Maddy-Clarke partnership that Lancashire did not bowl poorly on the third afternoon and nor did the Liverpool pitch wicket flatten out. The ball continued to pass the bat but the Warwickshire pair responded to any small defeats with phlegmatic temperaments and sound, albeit contrasting, techniques. At first Clarke was intent on taking the initiative away from a Lancashire attack which had been buoyed by Kerrigan claiming the wickets of Chris Wright and Tim Ambrose in the first seven overs of the day. On the ground where he took a record-equalling seven catches in an innings last August, Clarke took the attack to Lancashire with a display of controlled hitting which never veered into mere slogging. He chose the balls to hit wisely and he timed his strokes pleasingly well. After reaching his half century off 49 balls, he took a more sedate 89 deliveries to reach three figures. At the other end, Maddy ground his way to an equally vital century off 176 balls, an effort that was all the more praiseworthy given that he had been hit on the hand by Chapple early in the first session. It all made for good watching for the Warwickshire supporters, some of whom had draped a St George’s flag across one of the stands at Aigburth. In one corner of the patriotic symbol was a bear and ragged staff; but across the middle were written the words ‘One Rikki Clarke.’ By Saturday evening, everyone could see what the fuss was about.
