Sunderland: Jermain Defoe was disappointing

Alex Neil’s wait for a first win at Sunderland continues as he watched his side draw 1-1 with Burton at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday.

Former Manchester United defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson put Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side ahead as he drilled in a superb effort into the bottom corner.

Anthony Patterson prevented the away side from doubling their lead as he made a smart block with his feet to deny Christon Saydee as the forward raced through on goal unopposed by a defender.

The Black Cats eventually found their equaliser in stoppage time as top-scorer Ross Stewart provided the goods yet again – heading the ball down into the bottom corner from an Alex Pritchard cross to rescue a point for his side.

One player who was unable to make such an impact and let Neil down badly in the match was the Scot’s strike partner Jermain Defoe.

The veteran centre-forward was handed his first start since returning to the club on a free transfer and did not enjoy a successful night.

At the age of 39, he is not the player he once was at the Stadium of Light and a degree of patience is needed with the ex-England international, as it may take him time to settle in and start to show his quality on the pitch.

He struggled badly against Burton as he failed to get himself involved in the game for large spells before being hauled off the pitch in the 70th minute. This could be put down to a lack of match-fitness as he did not look as sharp as you would expect a player as classy as Defoe to be on and off the ball.

As per SofaScore, he only had 16 touches in his 70 minutes – fewer than Patterson’s 41 – and completed a measly seven passes. This shows that he found it difficult to get himself on the ball and engaged in the build-up play, whilst Stewart had 42 touches and won nine duels as he managed three shots on target and three key passes.

Defoe, meanwhile, failed to register a single shot on target or create a chance for one of his teammates, which shows that he had next to no impact in the final third.

His strike partner was showing him how it should be done and Neil will surely be disappointed with the Englishman’s display as he put faith in him by naming him in the starting XI.

Unadkat’s spell read 3-0-10-4 as eight batsmen, including the top seven, did not reach double figures. He was supported by Vinay Kumar and Piyush Chawla, both of whom took two wickets, as the South Africans were shot out in 13.1 overs.Earlier, the Indians were off to their second blazing start of the tournament, with an opening stand of 66 in 7.2 overs between Shikhar Dhawan and captain Parthiv Patel. Rangers dealt Filip Helander blow

A huge Glasgow Rangers injury setback has emerged on Swedish international Filip Helander…

What’s the latest?

Gers head coach Gio van Bronckhorst has confirmed that the centre-back will not play again this season after the issue he sustained last weekend in the Premiership.

The central defender was taken off in the 45th minute with a knock after an awkward landing left him unable to continue.

Van Bronckhorst said: “Filip’s injury is not good, we won’t have him for the remainder of the season.”

He now joins Alfredo Morelos and Ianis Hagi on the treatment table until the start of the 2022/23 campaign, at the earliest.

Ibrox faithful will be infuriated

This devastating update will surely infuriate the Ibrox faithful as it comes as a major blow to van Bronckhorst’s squad heading into the final part of the season.

Whilst he was ineligible to face Braga in the Europa League and his absence will make no difference to their fortunes at Ibrox on Thursday night, it will impact the squad rotation in the cup and the Premiership. The defender had started five domestic matches since the 20th of February and this shows that the head coach has been relying on him as an option on a semi-regular basis.

Helander has been a useful player for the Dutchman to call upon in the Premiership and in the Scottish Cup in order to rest the likes of Leon Balogun and Calvin Bassey. Van Bronckhorst has now been rid of that option and will have to see out the rest of the campaign without one of his experienced defenders.

This could then pile the pressure on the other players in that position and lead to them being overloaded with minutes on the pitch, risking further injuries.

Supporters will also be frustrated because this is the second time this season the centre-back has suffered a major knee injury. He will now end the campaign on six league appearances and that may leave supporters wondering whether or not he is worth keeping hold of.

If Rangers are unable to rely on him being fit for the majority, or even half, of the season then that makes him a liability within the squad. They would be better off cashing in on him and attempting to bring in a more durable player to take his place going forward to prevent this situation from happening again.

The allrounder Jacob Oram will have knee surgery next week that will rule him out of the Champions League Twenty20 in another painful chapter to a career plagued by injury. Scans showed damage to Oram’s patella tendon and he is now hoping to return for Pakistan’s visit in December. He has been replaced by the 18-year old allrounder Ben Wheeler, who played in the Under-19 World Cup this year.It continues a tough year for Oram, who forfeited his IPL fee when he suffered a torn patella during the one-day series with Australia in March. He made it back for the World Twenty20 but continued to feel pain and aggravated the problem again during a squad camp in Australia last month.New Zealand’s team management hoped Oram would be able to get through the one-day tour of Sri Lanka but he was sent home this week. The surgery also hurts Central Districts, who have already lost Ross Taylor to Bangalore for the Twenty20 tournament in South Africa starting on September 10.”While I’m gutted to miss the Champions League with the Stags I’m thankful the medical specialist has found the problem now so we can get the right plans in place to get it right,” Oram, 32, said. “I’ve been told that I should be realistically targeting the Pakistan homes series at the end of the year, but who knows, if surgery and rehab goes well I may be available for selection before the Indian tour in November.”Oram described in April how his injury list had been “hellishly frustrating”, and that every new problem “eroded the energy of my psyche”. Despite the latest setback, he still wants to continue on until next year’s World Cup.”It’s frustrating more than anything but I’ve been through this before,” he said. “I’m confident I can return injury free following a course of rehabilitation.”His replacement, Wheeler, has played only two first-class games, and is yet to make his Twenty20 debut for Central Districts.
