Dan Burn open to Newcastle move

A big Newcastle United transfer claim has emerged regarding  the club’s pursuit of Brighton’s 6 foot 5 giant Dan Burn…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has revealed whether or not the centre-back is open to the move to Tyneside this month.

He tweeted: “Newcastle are expected to go back in for Brighton defender Dan Burn.  The St James’ Park club have had an initial offer in the region of £8m rejected for the 29-year-old. Burn is a Newcastle fan and we’re told he’d be interested in a potential move back north.”

Buzzing

This news will surely leave Newcastle fans buzzing for several reasons.

Firstly, the defender could help to solve a major problem for Eddie Howe. There is no hiding away from the fact that Newcastle have been poor this season. They have not won enough games and have conceded far too many goals, with Norwich the only team to concede more in the top flight, having played a game more than the Toon, who have let in 43 goals as it stands.

Meanwhile, Burn has been part of a Brighton team which has conceded just 23 times in the Premier League. The defender has averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 6.96 for the Seagulls this season, showing that he has been consistently delivering good performances to help his team avoid conceding goals.

This suggests that the 29-year-old could come in and improve the Magpies’ backline, as he has proven that he can function as part of an impressive defence on the south coast. Therefore, he could play a part in solving Howe’s defensive issues during the second half of the campaign.

The Toon Army will also be delighted to read that he is one of their own and interested in making the move happen. The fact that he is a Newcastle fan suggests that he would give his all for the club on the pitch and would not just be making the transfer happen to increase his pay packet at the end of the month.

Supporters would surely appreciate a player who is a genuine fan of the club, as they will know that the player will give 100% and care about the city and the people. That is why Burn, in particular, could be a signing that Newcastle fans are buzzing to see happen.

New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, has said his last few days in India were “nervy” following the bomb blasts outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium ahead of the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians on April 17.”It [the Bangalore bombing] definitely made me nervier. We went over there with the threat, I guess, but when that happened it became a reality,” Bond told the . “We [Kolkata] had one game left at that stage and knew we couldn’t qualify for the semifinals, so we just wanted to get out of there, really.”Bond said he was concerned about New Zealand team-mate Ross Taylor, who was at the Chinnaswamy Stadium at the time of the blasts. “I was nervous, but for him [Taylor] it was a different level.”Bond played eight league games for Kolkata, taking nine wickets with an economy-rate of 7.22, and was satisfied with his effort. “It wasn’t too bad, I was pretty happy with the way I bowled,” he said. “I missed a few games in the middle, which was disappointing, but I came back pretty strongly in the last few games. I missed out at Bangalore for whatever reason and that was the quickest wicket we played on, so that was probably a mistake.”Bond and Kolkata team-mate Brendon McCullum did not stay back for the IPL closing ceremony and arrived in Christchurch on Wednesday night. They will soon fly to Brisbane before leaving for Guyana for the ICC World Twenty20 which begins on April 30. New Zealand are in Group B along with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.

Lancashire chief warns of financial trouble

Jim Cumbes, the Lancashire chief executive, has warned that a Test-match county could go bust in the near future unless changes are made to the bidding process for international matches

Jim Cumbes, the Lancashire chief executive, has warned that a Test-match county could go bust in the near future unless changes are made to the bidding process for international matches, and believes a franchise-based system involving the nine major venues should be the way forward to support the English game. His comments came as Lancashire announced a record loss of £546,000 after Old Trafford didn’t host a Test in 2009 and began their extensive redevelopment plans to try and ensure they earn an Ashes contest in 2013. The current ECB process is that grounds that aren’t given long-term staging agreements have to bid against each other to host Tests, one-dayers and Twenty20s.”Without doubt,” Cumbes said when asked about a county going under, “and it won’t be a small one; it will be a big one. It’s always possible, always possible. Yorkshire have a lot of debt at Headingley; Durham are in a lot of debt; we’re in debt.”Some grounds more than others cannot afford what is being asked. Trent Bridge’s staging agreement finishes next year – they’re frightened to death, because they have no other source of income but cricket yet have a ground they’ve got to maintain. Everybody’s in the same boat.”If the ECB don’t relax on this bidding process and start to get more realistic about the numbers, all we’ve said is we need to look at something else to fill the grounds.”The problems stem from the increasing number of grounds now wanting to host international matches following the development of Chester-le-Street, Cardiff, The Rose Bowl and Bristol. There are strict standards grounds have to meet in order to stage top-level games, but in return they can’t be guaranteed the volume of matches they need tobreak even.”You’ve got nine Test match grounds, and seven Test matches – two of which go to Lord’s – so you’ve got five for eight,” said Cumbes. “If the board then wants you to spend a million quid a year maintaining the ground, you can’t square the circle.”Whatever we come up with, it has to work for the whole of the game. But at the moment, you’ve got nine grounds supporting the rest – so I suppose you could ask ‘why aren’t nine franchises supporting them as well?'”I think it’s probably got to happen. The IPL is the fourth-most successful sporting competition in the world; it works in South Africa and Australia. We’ve got to make it attractive enough to fill our grounds.”The first major part of Old Trafford’s new look, an imposing red structure called The Point, is almost complete and will be open at the end of the month. The next stage of the plans, which include new player and media facilities plus more new stands, has been passed by Trafford Council and is now awaiting final clearance by Government North West before work can begin. The club are confident the plans won’t encounter any problems along the way although the recent General Election and a change of personnel in key positions has meant some delays.

NUFC: Magpies not eyeing Zapata move

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Atalanta powerhouse Duvan Zapata…

What’s the talk?

Magpies reporter Keith Downie has rebuffed claims that the club will make a move for the centre-forward before the window slams shut.

Speaking live on Sky Sports News (21:20), he said: “I heard a slight whisper about an hour ago that they may try for Duvan Zapata. I’m told that is not the case.”

Gutted

This update will surely leave Eddie Howe gutted as Zapata could have been a huge signing for the club on deadline day, due to what he could have brought to the table.

The Colombian striker could have been a difference-maker for the Toon as he has proven his quality at the top level for Atalanta. He has scored 78 goals and provided 38 assists in 152 matches for the Italian club, including nine goals and five assists in 16 Serie A games this term.

Meanwhile, Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin are the only players in the Newcastle squad who have scored more than twice in the league this term for the club. Neither of them have managed more than six, three short of Zapata’s nine, which suggests that Howe is in dire need of attacking reinforcements.

The ex-Cherries boss does not have an abundance of goalscorers in his team and the signing of Zapata could have gone a long way to solving that issue. He is a proven finisher who has shown that he can regularly find the back of the net in a top European league, suggesting that he could have been a huge player for the Toon, as he could have scored the goals to seal vital points in the Premier League.

Therefore, Howe will be gutted that the club have not pursued a deal to sign him on deadline day. He could be frustrated with those behind the scenes making the decisions as he could now be left without adequate resources to work with in the final third heading into the final few months of the season.

Leeds expecting major Kalvin Phillips offers

Leeds United are expecting to receive major offers for star man Kalvin Phillips this summer, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Return to training

The 26-year-old has missed the last six Premier League games with a hamstring injury but has now returned to training alongside Liam Cooper.

Leeds shared images of the pair all smiles at Thorp Arch in the week, with Phillips the subject of late interest in the January transfer window.

West Ham had a £50m bid turned down by Elland Road officials for Phillips late in the winter window, but Leeds are already bracing themselves for even bigger offers.

The Latest: Source shares update

Football Insider shared a story on Saturday where pundit Alan Hutton was giving his thoughts on Phillips’ future.

The outlet added that they were informed by a Leeds source the club are expecting major bids for the midfielder in the summer which are likely to exceed West Ham’s rejected bid.

The Verdict: A worry

Phillips revealed before the January market opened that he wants a new deal at Elland Road, however, as we know, that is yet to materialise.

His current contract is thought to be worth around £25,000-a-week and he hasn’t been handed improved terms since the club’s promotion to the Premier League. That could be a worry for the Whites, especially with interest now mounting in England’s Player of the Year.

Leeds fans will be hoping that Phillips remains in Yorkshire, however, the longer it goes on without a new deal, along with the recent update regarding big summer bids, means there may well be growing concern at Elland Road going into the 2022/23 campaign.

In other news: Leeds beast who Harvey Elliott recently praised may now leave permanently in summer – journalist.
