Newcastle injury news on Lewis

An injury expert has dropped a ‘worrying’ claim on Jamal Lewis, as he could now face a long spell on the sidelines at Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Lewis injury

Speaking to the media last week (via The Chronicle), Eddie Howe revealed that the St. James’ Park faithful ‘don’t expect’ Lewis to be back ‘for the foreseeable future’, after admitting himself that his injury ‘looks bad’, and could be a ‘hamstring problem’.

Nonetheless, it is not clear just how long he will be out for, although an injury expert has now given a likely timeframe.

The Latest: Could be ‘eight weeks’

Speaking to Football Insider, injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in both medicine and data analysis, has claimed that it is likely that Lewis has injured his hamstring, and suspects that he could now be out for up to ‘eight weeks’:

“The mechanism of injury was the acceleration phase of a sprint.

“He pulled up fairly sharply, which is a good indication that it is his hamstring.

“The worrying thing is you have varying degrees of strain. If it is a grade one, you would expect him to be back for the festive period.

“But the fact that Eddie Howe has said that he is out for the ‘foreseeable future’ means it’s probably more severe, maybe high-end grade two.

“If that is the case, it could be somewhere between four and eight weeks, so maybe after the winter break.”

The Verdict: Blow

It would certainly be a blow if the North East club are without Lewis for the next few weeks.

The Northern Ireland international has been a revelation under Howe, as he started their last four matches in the Premier League before his injury, where he was barely getting a look-in under Steve Bruce (Transfermarkt).

The former Burnley and AFC Bournemouth manager sung his praises before raising his concerns over his injury, claiming that Lewis has been ‘excellent’ in his athletic work, while former top-flight striker Noel Whelan has recently complemented the ‘real energy’ that he has to get up and down the left flank.

Nonetheless, with fixtures piling up during and after the hectic festive period, Howe will now find it more difficult to win games without Lewis in his team.

'I can't believe we're 1-0 down' – Steyn

Dale Steyn can’t quite believe that South Africa are 1-0 down going into the final match of their series against England, after the manner in which they dominated both drawn Tests at Centurion and Cape Town

Dale Steyn can’t quite believe that South Africa are 1-0 down going into the final match of their series against England, after the manner in which they dominated both drawn Tests at Centurion and Cape Town. But, having produced one of the best spells of his career in a luckless performance in last week’s nailbiter at Newlands, he remains confident of squaring the series on what is anticipated to be a bowler-friendly surface in the series decider at Johannesburg.”We almost feel like we’ve played the better cricket, but that’s just the way it goes,” Steyn told Cricinfo’s Switch Hit podcast. “You have to take your chances when they come, and that’s what England did at Durban. But we all know that we need to take 20 wickets to win the final match and level the series, and that’s the main thing. If we prepare a flattie, we are basically handing the series over to England, so we know it’s going to be an interesting wicket to play on. If our batters can conquer their bowlers, and we can bowl well in home conditions, we could yet get the result we need.”From a personal point of view, however, it would be hard for Steyn to improve upon the performance he put in on the final day of the Cape Town Test, which included a sensational new-ball duel with England’s most obdurate player, Paul Collingwood. Finding late swing at 90mph, Steyn beat the bat maybe a dozen times in total, yet somehow failed to find the edge that could well have decided the destiny of the match.”I think that’s what people want to come and watch, don’t they?” said Steyn. “Colly is one of the hardest men – we know that from many encounters in one-day cricket, not just Test cricket – and he showed once again what a gutsy player he is. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter how well you bowl, if the guy at the other end doesn’t get out, the compliments have to go to him. He stuck it out, stuck to his guns, didn’t try anything fancy and ended up saving the Test match for England.”I probably haven’t beaten the edge to that extent since schools cricket,” he added. “At one point we had a bit of a giggle about it, because although he batted well, I felt that if I could keep bowling with a smile on my face and not lose my cool, that was the main thing. A lot of bowlers tend to run in and beat the bat, and then go looking for the killer ball and get hit for four through the leg side, because they are looking for too much swing. It was an interesting duel between the two of us, and I was able to keep my cool and laugh about it at the end of the day.”Even so, in taking 57 overs to break the stand between Collingwood and Ian Bell, South Africa were left playing catch-up after starting that final day in an optimistic frame of mind. “Our gameplan was to pick up a couple of wickets by lunch, take two or three going to tea, leaving us with two at the end of the day,” Steyn said. “We certainly hoped that the new ball would take one or two and cause some panic, as it showed in Pretoria. We always felt that we were in the game, but the way that Colly batted, he stuck it out and didn’t get out, and wanted to decide the game there and then.”On a more positive note for Steyn, the quality of his performance demonstrated that had fully recovered from the hamstring trouble that ruled him out of the first Test at Centurion. “I’ve been working extremely hard off the field, doing a lot of squats and jumps and weights in the dressing room, and I’m impressed it’s held together so well. When footballers are injured, the manager can stick them on the field for the last ten minutes and slowly push them. Cricket is different, it’s straight in at the deep end with a lot of overs at Durban and Cape Town. I’m just thankful we’ve got a good trainer, and he’s looked after me really well.”

Newcastle must swoop for Ross Barkley

Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley as they enter their first transfer window under their new ownership.

What’s the story?

According to TEAMtalk, the 28-year-old has a variety of Premier League clubs keeping tabs on him ahead of a potential swoop this month, with Newcastle being one of those.

The northeast club have been linked with an array of players since the completion of their Saudi-backed takeover in October and are now into the first transfer window under the new hierarchy. However, Eddie Howe’s side still remain in a desperate state, sitting 19th in the Premier League table and two points off safety, with 17th-placed Watford having two games in hand.

Barkley has managed just over 400 minutes of football in all competitions under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea this term, and a move could be on the cards in order for the Englishman to rack up more game-time.

Furthermore, the 28-year-old will have this year’s World Cup on his mind and will be eyeing a potential England recall, which would probably only come if he is playing and impressing regularly.

Newcastle must seal a deal for Barkley

Despite a mixed few years since moving to Chelsea, Barkley still has plenty of talent and is a proven Premier League midfielder, something which could be of huge benefit to Howe.

The midfielder had received plenty of praise from former Blues boss Frank Lampard, who labelled him “first class”.

However, the 28-year-old was sent out on loan to Aston Villa last season, where impressed then-Villa manager Dean Smith in the early stages of his spell, who called him “a high-calibre player” after scoring twice in his first four league games for the Midlands club.

The loan didn’t go to plan though, with Barkley scoring just one more goal before returning to Stamford Bridge.

Valued by Transfermarkt at £11.7m, a deal for the midfielder could be a shrewd acquisition for Howe’s side, with the 44-year-old desperate for reinforcements over the next month.

West Ham eyeing Benoit Badiashile

West Ham United are targeting a move for Monaco centre-back Benoit Badiashile this month with David Moyes’ side short on numbers at the back and in need of defensive reinforcements.

What’s the story?

According to Foot Mercato, the Hammers are looking to sign Badiashile and the Frenchman’s representatives have already been contacted.

The £25.2m-rated defender has been subject to interest from numerous Premier League clubs and could be on his way to England over the coming weeks.

West Ham fans will be buzzing

The Irons are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements whilst first-choice duo Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna are sidelined, with the latter out for the foreseeable future after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Thus, the signing of Badiashile would surely be one that goes down well with the London Stadium faithful.

At just 20 years of age, the young defender is certainly a hot prospect, having started eight of Monaco’s 19 league matches this term with the French outfit 7th in Ligue 1.

The centre-back was also an ever-present in Monaco’s Champions League qualifying campaign as well as starting four of their six Europa League group stage games.

Like Zouma, the Frenchman has recently suffered a hamstring injury but returned just before Christmas off the bench in a 2-1 win over Stade Rennais.

Although inexperienced, Badiashile is now in his fourth season as a regular for Monaco’s first team, having made his Ligue 1 debut in a 4-0 home defeat to PSG back in November 2018 as a 17-year-old.

The defender went on to make another 25 first-team appearances in all competitions that season and has made 104 appearances in total since stepping up from the Monaco youth ranks in 2018.

All of that has seen him impress rapidly in French football, winning a mighty 2.1 aerial duels and 1.7 tackles per match this term. Funnily enough, that first statistic ranks exactly the same as Kurt Zouma, a fellow French defender, meaning they could create a mightily impressive partnership at the back.

As for his tackling, he’d be ranked first for centre-backs at West Ham, winning more than every defender besides Arthur Masuaku and Ben Johnson.

As a consequence, he’d surely fit seamlessly into Moyes’ defence in East London.

After a strong start to the campaign, in which they won eight of their first 15 Premier League games, the Hammers’ form has stagnated slightly since both Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma were ruled out.

Since Zouma suffered his injury in early December, the Hammers have lost four games out of seven in all competitions, winning two whilst keeping just one clean sheet.

Head groundsman leaves Somerset

Somerset have confirmed that head groundsman Phil Frost has been made redundant after 22 years at the club

Cricinfo staff12-Feb-2010Somerset have confirmed that head groundsman Phil Frost has been made redundant after 22 years at the club.Frost, alongside another member of the ground staff, was relieved of the position in December in an attempt to “identify cost effectiveness and improve efficiency”, according to a statement issued by the club. While Hampshire sign lucrative link-ups with teams across the globe, other counties face the harsher climate of recession and, with news that the Champions League Twenty20 will encroach on the English season, an increasingly precarious domestic structure.Frost won many awards for his work at Taunton, but has also come under fire for the batsman-friendly nature of Championship pitches which have led to a high number of draws. The club are keen to produce more result-orientated wickets for the 2010 season and now Brian Rose, the director of cricket, will oversee the work.Somerset recently signed Kieron Pollard and Cameron White, two premium Twenty20 players, in an attempt to reach the lucrative Champions League tournament, which will have stretched their budgets and now cuts are having to be made elsewhere.
