The ICC has confirmed that the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) will be used during South Africa’s home Test series against England next month.The use of reviews for the forthcoming series in South Africa had been uncertain because of doubts over the home board’s willingness to help fund the technology, but the ICC has now confirmed that the system will be in place.South Africa coach Mickey Arthur welcomed the use of the system. “I’m all in favour of anything which helps to reach the correct decision but, in an ideal world, that would mean having the same system in place all over the world,” he said.A review system was trialled last year, but a reluctance to cede power from the onfield officials meant that the third umpire was prevented from using all the available technology, and this fudged process led to a series of notable mishaps – not least during the first Test in Jamaica, when Ramnaresh Sarwan was reprieved by guesswork after the onfield umpire Tony Hill had given him out lbw.On the back of this experience, England were the only ICC member to vote against the adoption of reviews, preferring a system where reviews are led by umpires and not player challenges.Under the new arrangements each side will get a maximum of two unsuccessful challenges per innings, one less than when the system was trialled last year. The umpires will also have full use of the technology – Hawk-Eye, Hot Spot, pitch maps, stump microphones – to make their decision.This latest version made its international debut in the first Test between New Zealand and Pakistan, and has already played a significant role, with Brendon McCullum being reprieved off the penultimate delivery of the first day’s play, when umpire Simon Taufel’s lbw decision was overturned.Dave Richardson, the ICC’s cricket operations manager, believes reviews can prompt players to adhere more closely to the spirit of the game. “Initially when we spoke we thought a possible indirect benefit might be that batsmen, when they do edge a ball, won’t hang around and will walk anyway because they will be inevitably given out in the long run and they might be shown up as, not cheats, but certainly not playing within the spirit.”

Meanwhile, Marcal was heavily criticised for the performance he delivered in the Frenchman’s place.

Tamim Iqbal, the Bangladesh opener, is in doubt for the triangular series against India and Sri Lanka in January after he ignored medical advice and continued to play with a fractured hand, the BCB has said.Tamim, who has scored 1864 runs in 66 ODIs at 28.24, had injured his left hand while batting against Zimbabwe in an ODI in Chittagong on November 5. Initial scans did not reveal a fracture, but the failure to recover prompted a re-examination on November 21, and a hairline fracture was brought to notice. He was advised against any batting during practice or matches until December 7.”Despite these clear verbal and written instructions, for unclear reasons Tamim had tried batting on a number of occasions, both before and after he was diagnosed with a fracture,” the BCB said in a statement. “After every time (he batted]), he complained of increased pain, swelling, and an inability to adequately grip the bat, let alone bat with comfort or competence.”This ongoing aggravation and re-injury will delay Tamim’s recovery, and could give him long term issues with the wrist. As such, there is now some doubt as to his ability to return to fitness by the next international duties in early January.”The triangular series gets underway on January 4 in Mirpur, and will be followed by Bangladesh taking on India in a two-Test series.

Manchester United could finally strengthen their midfield over the coming months after being linked with a transfer move for Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara.

What’s the story?

According to The Athletic’s transfer expert David Ornstein, United a keeping close tabs on the 22-year-old’s situation after he decided to leave the Stade Velodrome as a free agent at the end of the season.

Kamara’s current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2022 and is not expected to extend his stay in the south of France, opening the door to an imminent exit.

The report states that: “There are suggestions that Marseille could yet make a last push to secure fresh terms but The Athletic understands Kamara has now opted to leave as a free agent at the end of the season.

“He is under consideration at one of the traditional top-four Premier League clubs and Manchester United are also across the situation as they weigh up possibilities to bolster their midfield.”

Rangnick must seal Man Utd move

Given United’s recent struggles at the base of their midfield, new interim manager Ralf Rangnick must seal a move for the former France U21 international.

The United ace has produced tallies of 1.32, 3.77 and 1.40, respectively, highlighting how Kamara’s arrival would improve the Red Devils’ midfield options.

Therefore, Rangnick must sanction a swoop for the promising maestro, kickstarting United’s new era under his watchful eye with an extremely astute acquisition.
