The Indian board has sought the opinion of two top legal authorities in the country to firm up its stand against the contentious ‘whereabouts’ clause in the WADA code

The Indian board has sought the opinion of two top legal authorities in the country to firm up its stand against the contentious ‘whereabouts’ clause in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code. The BCCI confirmed it has requested Goolam Vahanvati, India’s attorney-general, and AS Anand, a former chief justice, to clarify whether the clause infringed on players’ rights and had the potential to be legally challenged. The ICC, meanwhile, has decided to hold a meeting of its working group on September 5-6 in Dubai to discuss India’s objections to the clause, which the BCCI said violates players’ privacy and posed a security threat. The decision was taken at a teleconference of the group on Wednesday night. The ICC has also informed its members that no player in its testing pool will be penalised for missing the August 1 deadline for supplying ‘whereabouts’ information until the BCCI has had a chance to address its concerns. All players in the ICC’s International Registered Testing Pool (IRTP), except the 11 from India, have agreed to submit to the new code. The code’s ‘whereabouts’ clause requires players in the pool to supply information in advance on their location for an hour each day for the forthcoming quarter (three months) to facilitate testing during and outside competitions. The BCCI has backed its players and their opposition to the clause led the ICC to form a working group to resolve the issue. This group is headed by Tim Kerr, chairman of ICC anti-doping panel, and including ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat, BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, ICC principal advisor IS Bindra and former India captain Anil Kumble, who sits on WADA’s Athletes Committee.WADA has agreed to assist in the process and David Howman, its director-general, said the agency had been involved in discussions with the ICC on the code for the last five years. “We have been engaged with the ICC for five years now,” Howman told the Hindu. “The discussions started with the ICC when Malcolm Speed was the CEO. I have had occasions to be engaged at ICC meetings and certainly my answer [whether ICC was involved in the process of revising the code] is yes. The ICC has been part of what we have been trying to do for some time.”The ICC became a WADA signatory in 2006 and adopted the amended code from January 1 this year. The Indian board has suggested that they will push for a cricket-specific code and ask the ICC to negotiate with WADA to amend the testing pool selection method to include only players who are injured or have a history of doping violations. WADA has agreed to a similar amendment for FIFA, the world football body.
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Bruno Lage has dropped an update on the club’s plans for the January transfer window.
What’s been said?
In recent comments cited by the Express & Star, the 45-year-old revealed that he has already identified a number of potential targets for the upcoming winter market, as well as claiming that Jeff Shi is well aware of his demands in January.
When asked whether he has spoken to Shi regarding his transfer targets, Lage said: “Every day. When the transfer window closed we talked about it then and he knows what I want, but in the same way, I need to understand just not the sport, but also the financial things.
“But he knows what I want and it was good for me when he did that interview and he said ‘I’m happy because Bruno has a big ambition’. I’m here to try to do good things and continue the work they started four years ago.”
Fans will be buzzing
Considering the fact that there are a number of positions in the current Wolves squad that are lacking a considerable amount of depth, the news that Lage has already identified a selection of players he is hoping to bring to Molineux this winter is sure to have left fans of the club buzzing.
At present, the 45-year-old has just three fit central midfielders, in the form of Ruben Neves, Leander Dendoncker and Joao Moutinho – none of whom are exactly attack-minded players.
Indeed, between the trio’s 29 cumulative Premier League appearances so far this season, they have scored just one goal and registered one assist, something that has largely contributed to the fact Wolves have scored the joint fourth-lowest amount of goals in the league.
Meanwhile, Lage is also short of choice in the heart of his defence, with only Conor Coady, Willy Boly, Romain Saiss and Max Kilman currently being available for selection at centre-back.
And, with both Boly and Saiss likely to be unavailable for the vast majority of January as a result of their likely participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, centre-back is also an area in which it is essential that the club strengthen this winter.
As such, as long as these two areas of the pitch are where Lage has identified his January targets, Wolves’ impressive recent climb towards the top end of the Premier League table could well continue long after the turn of the year, something that everyone associated with the club would enjoy.

A gente entende.
Deu certo. Conseguimos encaixar as jogadas – analisou.

Manchester United chiefs have reportedly accepted that a change of manager is required at Old Trafford and have identified Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers as their preferred candidate.
What’s the word?
That’s according to Manchester Evening News (MEN) journalist Samuel Luckhurst, who claims the humiliating defeats to fierce rivals Liverpool and Manchester City proved pivotal in the hierarchy’s thinking.
However, the chief United reporter for MEN also states that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could see out the season as they line up his successor, with Erik ten Hag and Luis Enrique also on the shortlist.
He tweeted: “Key figures at United have privately accepted a change of manager is required, but Solskjaer could still see out the season. Rodgers the frontrunner but Ten Hag and Enrique admired”.
Man Utd fans will be elated
News that the Glazers are drawing up plans to replace Solskjaer in the Old Trafford dugout will leave a large section of the club’s supporters feeling elated, especially as the proposed three-man wishlist contains a trio of astute tacticians.
All of Brendan Rodgers, Erik Ten Hag and Luis Enrique have claimed major silverware throughout their careers, something Solskjaer has been unable to do at United during his two-and-a-half-year reign.
Although the Norwegian has done a vast amount of good work at United, progressing them both on and off the field, he’s arguably taken them as far as he can with the club now sitting sixth in the top-flight.
Therefore, a change at the helm appears to be the best option for the 20-time English champions, although that might not be a simple process.
“A senior club source has indicated Solskjaer could remain manager until the end of the season amid a lack of a readily available replacement,” wrote Luckhurst.
“Rodgers, 48, is under contract at Leicester until June 2023, and United would have to agree on a fee with Leicester to release Rodgers and pay compensation to Solskjaer for his dismissal.”
With a tough run of fixtures coming up – including Villarreal, Arsenal and Chelsea – the United board may be forced into axing Solskjaer sooner rather than later, and a managerial switch could be on the horizon, something that rightfully leaves the Old Trafford faithful beaming from ear to ear.

Ian Bell and Churchillian rhetoric do not tend to belong in the same sentence – in fact, chinchillian would be an adjective more befitting of such a mousy character – but his 72 provided much needed evidence of a batsman willing to tough it out

Ian Bell and Churchillian rhetoric do not tend to belong in the same sentence – in fact, chinchillian would be an adjective more befitting of such a mousy character. But never mind the blithe assumptions that can be taken from this latest unfulfilled performance. Today’s innings of 72 from 137 balls could yet prove to have been his finest hour.In the course of Bell’s 49-Test career, he has somehow managed to subvert that old adage: “It’s not how, it’s how many” and turn it to his advantage. His average, which today climbed back above the 40 mark, has so often been massaged by soft runs in irrelevant circumstances, providing a statistical whitewash for the numerous occasions when everything has been at stake, and he has been nowhere to be seen – most recently, but far from exclusively, his twin failures in that fourth-Test humiliation at Headingley.Today, however, Bell fronted up for his country when the need has rarely been greater: in an Ashes decider at the scene of his single greatest Test failure, no less. And while he himself baulked at the suggestion that atoning for his two ducks in the series decider in 2005 had been a significant motivating factor (“It doesn’t make sense to look back, it’s a different attack, and I’m a different player”), it’s a safe bet that everyone at The Oval, fans and opponents included, were fully aware of that little notch in his statistics. While the “how many” of his performance reads like yet another broken promise, the “how” gave notice of a steely side that has all too often been absent from his career. He had to struggle and survive, and for two determined sessions he did just that, only to succumb – to knowing tuts up and down the country – to a tentative prod to his first ball after the tea break.”It was frustrating not to go on and get a hundred, but I was pretty pleased with the way I played,” said Bell. “It was tricky at first, we had to graft it out and it was some ugly cricket at times, but that’s what was needed early on. We had to fight hard, it didn’t feel like the usual Oval wicket where sometimes, when you get in, it’s a lovely place to bat. It was frustrating and pretty slow really.”An indication of the importance of Bell’s innings came from the speed with which the innings unravelled once he was gone. Five wickets in the final session hauled Australia back to parity and more, and yet, in a point he felt justified in labouring, England do at least have 300 runs in the bank already, on a wicket that is puffing more dust than the shifting sands of the Kalahari. For all the justifiable accusations of frivolity that fly Bell’s way, he is a player who likes to graft with the best of them. One of his earliest Test hundreds, which also happened to be one of his best, came in Faisalabad on the 2005-06 tour of Pakistan, when he managed to make his fellow centurion Kevin Pietersen look a headstrong rookie cop. Then as now Bell withstood a ferocious early barrage (for Mitchell Johnson read Shoaib Akhtar), and emerged from the onslaught with his confidence and determination ramped up in equal measures.A similar scenario panned out today. There was nowhere for Bell to hide when he came to the crease at 12 for 1 in the sixth over, having been promoted to No. 3 in the order where he has thrived for Warwickshire but shirked for England, averaging 31.00 in 16 previous Tests.”No. 3 is something I’ve done for Warwickshire for a long time, and I’ve had a lot of success,” he said. “I want to keep improving for England, and at the back of my mind it’s a position I want to crack and make my own. But today is not about me and what I want to achieve, this is about the team. It’s all about England, going out as a team, and putting in a great performance this week.”Nor was there an opportunity for Bell to slipstream a senior colleague (as was the case during his last finest innings for England, his 199 against South Africa at Lord’s in 2008). If anything, the reverse was true. While Bell ducked and weaved to the whims of his nemesis Johnson, Strauss at the other end slid serenely to his half-century.”I knew [the short balls] were something that was going to be thrown my way, and that Johnson would be on pretty quickly after I got to the crease,” said Bell, who was dispatched by Johnson in both innings of the fourth Test. “But I’ve done a lot of work in the last week, certainly after Headingley, to find a method that works.”At The Oval you know you’re going to get more pace and bounce than in other parts of England, so sometimes when you do get short-pitched bowling it’s not the worst thing in the world,” he said. “After a while you start to get the pace of the wicket a little bit easier, and I don’t think the short ball got many wickets today, it was more the length balls that did the damage.”Hindsight will be the only fair means of assessing an innings from Bell in which, for once, his returns were less than the sum of the efforts he put in, and to his credit, he accepts he has a few doubters still to win over. “It’s going to take more than one innings to change people’s opinions,” he said. “It’s a matter of doing that over a long period of time.”But I’ve been working really hard on making sure that it’s not just the easy runs I get, it’s the hard runs, and making sure that when it counts, like this morning, you get in and see through the early sessions and the new ball. I’m pretty pleased with how I played, but if you’re going to be hyper-critical, I think I need to go on and score hundreds. As a team we’ve only got one and that’s not a good enough stat in this series.”
Kevin Campbell has backed Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard to bring in Stuttgart left-back Borna Sosa, as per Football Insider.
The Lowdown: Sosa links
The 41-year-old has reportedly been promised a huge January transfer budget, and it seems as if a new left-back could be in his sights following links to Rangers’ Borna Barisic along with Sosa.
German outlet Bild claimed earlier in the week that Gerrard is looking at a winter swoop for Sosa, who has 24 assists to his name during his career. The report said that a €30m (£25.3m) bid would be enough to land the 23-year-old, with Matt Targett and Ashley Young the current Villa left-back options.
The Latest: Campbell’s comments
Campbell, who features on BBC Radio 5 Live, was talking to Football Insider regarding Villa’s reported interest in Sosa.
This is what he had to say, higlighting the Croatian’s assist record and believing that he’d be a ‘brilliant’ addition at Villa Park:
“I’m sure he’ll be a brilliant player for Villa.
“An assist every four games is a really good record for a full-back.
“I don’t profess to know a lot about him but I’m sure he will have been on Steven Gerrard’s radar at Rangers but that transfer fee was probably well out of reach there.
“Now he’s at Villa he can probably think about bringing him in for that sort of money – because he’s certainly someone who Gerrard likes.”
The Verdict: Wait until the summer?
Football Insider have recently suggested that Gerrard wants to add to his centre-back and defensive midfield options in the New Year with two ‘big money’ acquisitions, and should he get his wish, it may be wise to leave a move for Sosa until the summer.
Gerrard is fairly well-stocked at left-back, with Targett and Young two solid top-flight options, so perhaps he should give the pair the chance to impress for the remainder of the season.
That would then give him an opportunity to bolster other areas of the squad in the short term, and if he still wants a new left-back, he can revisit the interest in Sosa at the end of the campaign.

NESTE CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO…
Breno Neste Campeonato Brasileiro, Breno entrou em campo em 16 partidas. Não fez gol nem deu assistência. O zagueiro conseguiu fazer 12 desarmes no período, uma finalização certa e três erradas. Nove faltas recebidas e 535 passes certos. Recebeu quatro cartões amarelos e nenhum vermelho.
Ramon Ramon chegou a dez partidas neste Brasileiro.

Close to a year after retiring from international cricket, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has said he may play for Bengal in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. The 37-year-old pointed out that he was open to the idea of playing “a few of the four-day Ranji Trophy matches” if the Bengal selectors were keen on including him in the team.”At the moment I haven’t spoken to anybody, but I’ll definitely be speaking to the selectors, and if I’m required, then I won’t mind playing a few matches,” Ganguly told the , the Kolkata-based daily. “The 2009-10 season is again a very crucial one for Bengal and we’re in a tough group. So, if I’m required, I’ll be there.”It was reported earlier that Ganguly would be playing for Bengal only in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to gain some match practice before turning out for Kolkata Knight Riders in the third edition of the IPL in March-April next year. However, he said he was keen on playing the home games during the Ranji season and the knock-out matches later, if Bengal qualified.”I cannot sit out 11 months in a year and hope to fire in the IPL,” Ganguly told the . “It may be Twenty20 cricket, but let’s not forget that it’s a top-class international tournament and the standard of cricket is very high. I need to get into the groove before IPL 3 starts in March 2010.”Ganguly played 113 Tests and 311 ODIs and scored 7212 and 11363 runs respectively at an average of 40-plus. He also featured in 242 first-class matches, and is 67 short of reaching 15000 runs. With Bengal taking on heavyweights like Uttar Pradesh, Saurashtra, Karnakata, Maharashtra, Baroda and Delhi in Group B of the Ranji Trophy Super League this season, Ganguly’s experience is expected to bolster Bengal’s fragile middle order. Bengal are also set to welcome back ICL players like Deep Dasgupta, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and Rohan Gavaskar.Bengal captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla and selector Devang Gandhi were both delighted with Ganguly’s decision. ” making a comeback is big news. It will be great for Bengal and a huge plus for Bengal cricket. It will be of great advantage if he turns out this season,” Shukla told the .”With the world of experience Sourav’s presence brings to the team, it will definitely help Bengal cricket,” Gandhi said. However, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) said it was not yet aware of the development. “He hasn’t told us anything,” said CAB joint-secretary Biswarup Dey. “It won’t be fair to make a comment based on media statements.”Ganguly, who is also the chairman of CAB’s new cricket development committee, said the decision was unlikely to interfere with his administrative responsibilities. “Not at all. I will do what I can as a member of the CAB working and cricket committees,” Ganguly said. “Balancing the two won’t be a problem. And like always, I will give it my best shot.”
