Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain, is expected to be fit for the return series against Australia, which starts on February 26. While the fracture Smith sustained in his left hand during the third Test in Sydney has healed, he has also put off surgery on his tennis elbow – in his right hand – until after the series.”He is fine,” Arthur told the . “He has had his second injection [in the elbow], which is a good thing. The fracture in his hand has mended perfectly, and we are hoping he will be having a hit in about two weeks. It is even better than expected.”Smith said he would be available for selection for the Cape Cobras for next weekend’s Standard Bank Pro20 semi-finals, should they qualify for the knock-out stage. “The medical team have given me the go ahead to resume playing,” said Smith. “They are very happy with my hand injury and they feel they can manage my elbow through the home series against Australia. I will get back into the nets next week and hopefully the Cobras will make it through to the last four.”Smith had managed to play on during the Tests in Australia by getting the tear in his elbow injected with his blood. He was already slated to fly home after the three-Test contest when he suffered a broken knuckle off a Mitchell Johnson delivery during his first innings in Sydney. Smith did not open in the second innings of the Test, but bravely walked out at No. 11 as South Africa – who had already sealed the series 2-0 – tried to save the game, which he nearly did with Makhaya Ntini.”It still remains to be seen once he [Smith] starts playing but the good thing is that the fracture has mended perfectly,” said Arthur. “It is really excellent to have him fit. We weren’t sure how it was all going to come through but at this stage, touch wood, it all seems to be very good.”Australia, who are in danger of losing their No. 1 spot in the ICC Test rankings, have named their 14-man squad for the three Tests, and have included three uncapped players in Phillip Hughes, Bryce McGain and Marcus North.

Everton injury news on Richarlison

An injury expert has now said that Richarlison could be out for Everton for longer than initially expected.

The Lowdown: Richarlison injured

Richarlison has missed the Goodison Park faithful’s last two games after picking up an injury in their 3-1 win at home to Burnley in the Premier League a couple of weeks ago.

It is not known exactly how long he will be out for, but the Merseyside club will be keeping a close eye on his progress with another international break set to come in October.

The Latest: Injury expert on Richarlison

Speaking to Football Insider, Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries website and has a background in medicine and data analysis, has now said that Richarlison could be held back until after the international break has finished, despite mentions of him only being out for ‘two or three weeks’:

“It was an impact injury after a tackle from James Tarkowski.

“It was Richarlison’s ankle but the actual issue is knee related. It looks like there might have been a hyperextension of the knee.

“He did continue for a bit but couldn’t complete the game. Benitez came out and said he has been involved in some elements of training but doesn’t feel comfortable.

“He wasn’t able to complete those sessions and there was a decision on the eve of the Aston Villa game to take him out of the limelight.

“There is no definitive timeline in terms of what we are looking at but in around two or three weeks has been mentioned at this point.

“What I would say is we are heading into an international break so even if he is 50/50 it could be he is held back. Just to make sure he is in a good place.”

The Verdict: Potentially big blow

It would certainly be a big blow for Rafa Benitez and the Toffees if Richarlison was forced to sit on the touchlines until after the international break.

In the last two matches that he has missed, the Blues have lost both of them, slumping to a miserable 3-0 defeat away at Aston Villa before being knocked out 10-9 on penalties to Championship team Queens Park Rangers after a 2-2 draw at home (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, Benitez will want the Brazil international back in his squad as soon as possible as he can help him pick up some much-needed results.

Saints fans rage at B team result

Southampton fans were far from happy as their B side lost 3-2 to Birmingham City on Monday despite being 2-0 up.

For the Saints’ senior side, it has not been the best start to the season at all. Eight games in, they have won just one match during 90 minutes, an 8-0 victory over Newport County in the League Cup, and they are without a victory after six Premier League matches (Sky Sports).

Things are not going to better for the club’s development side, either. They were without a win in five matches in their top flight, and were well in with a chance of changing that form against Birmingham. However, despite a two-goal lead, they were unable to hold on, and eventually lost 3-2. As a result, they remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

Southampton’s official Twitter account shared the result, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform below.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the defeat below

Mostra a força do Vasco. Fico muito feliz também pelo Douglas. Temos proximidade.

É esperar e continuar o trabalho aqui no clube.

Ponting decides to give IPL a miss

Ricky Ponting, the Australia captain, has decided to skip the 2009 season of the IPL because of his country’s packed international schedule. Ponting felt he wouldn’t be able to give his all for his country if he used his two-week break from national duty to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders.”My country comes first and there was no way I could give my all for Australia if I used the only two-week break we have to go and play in India,” Ponting wrote in his column in the . “I have been talking with my team, the Kolkata Knight Riders, for a month or two now and in the end my only choice was to withdraw from the 2009 competition, but I will most certainly be back for 2010 when I hope to be able to make a much greater contribution. The franchise has been fantastic about the whole thing and I want to thank them for their understanding.”Australia are currently in South Africa where they are scheduled to play three Tests, two Twenty20 internationals and five ODIs. This series comes soon after the end of the Australian summer, during which the team played home Test and ODI series against South Africa and New Zealand. The Australian selectors wanted Ponting to take a break during the five-ODI series against New Zealand but he returned to the squad after Australia conceded a 2-0 lead to the visitors.”As everybody is aware, I could not really take a break through the Australian summer,” Ponting wrote. “However, I have to say that I had been talking with my manager about not playing the IPL well before any issues came up about me having a break, or, as it turned out, not having a break, during the one-day series against New Zealand.”Part of the reason I decided to withdraw from the IPL is that Twenty20 is such a physically demanding game and you have to be at your best to play the game and I want to be at my best for the [Twenty20] World Cup. “After the tour of South Africa ends in April, Australia are scheduled to play an ODI series against Pakistan, following which is the two-week gap when Australia’s players are expected to be available for the IPL. However, the itinerary is packed after the break with the ICC World Twenty20 in England followed by the Ashes, ODIs in England, a bilateral series in India, a Test series against Pakistan and the Australian summer.Joy Bhattacharya, Kolkata’s team director, confirmed the franchise will seek a replacement. “We are looking for a replacement and are bargaining hard with two or three players already. We are looking for a batsman who will be an able replacement,” he told Cricinfo. “The rules for a replacement says that if for any reason a player is unavailable for the entire season, only then a player from the auction list [the original auction list of 110-odd] can be picked.”Ponting is the third high-profile Australian to miss the 2009 season of the IPL after fast bowler Mitchell Johnson and vice-captain Michael Clarke, both of whom did not take part in the inaugural season either.

Celtic: Josip Juranovic out for a couple of weeks

Celtic right-back Josip Juranovic has been ruled out for a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury, Alison Conroy reports.

The Lowdown: Juranovic under Postecoglou

Juranovic was one of 12 summer signings by the Hoops, costing £2.7m from Legia Warsaw. Ange Postecoglou believed that the 26-year-old would add ‘important quality’ to the Celtic squad, and he has used Juranovic at right-back and left-back in recent weeks.

He turned out as a right midfielder for his previous employers at the beginning of the season and suffered a knock in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Dundee United.

The Latest: Sidelined

Postecoglou was talking to the media on Wednesday ahead of Celtic’s Europa League clash with Bayer Leverkusen.

He admitted that Juranovic will be out for “a couple of weeks†with a hamstring injury, with Conroy relaying the news via Twitter.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-14/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Another one…

Celtic’s injury list has been mounting up recently, and Juranovic is the latest man to be ruled out.

However, it could have been worse timing for Postecoglou and the Hoops, with international action set to take centre stage following this weekend’s clash with Aberdeen.

Celtic’s next game after the trip to Pittodrie isn’t until October 16, so hopefully a number of absentees will be in line for a return by then.
