Southampton fans slam Hasenhuttl comments

Many Southampton fans were far from happy with comments from Ralph Hasenhuttl following their 3-1 defeat to Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.

After an awful finish to 2020/21 which saw them slump to 15th, the Saints got their new season off to the worst possible start against the Toffees at Goodison Park. They took the lead through new signing Adam Armstrong, but Richarlison, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were all on target to turn the game around for the home side.

After the match, Hasenhuttl admitted that he twice thought about changing things earlier on in the game but didn’t do so at either time (via The Athletic) – in the end, that may have ended up being to the Saints’ detriment.

The manager’s comments were shared on Twitter by @SaintsExtra, and they attracted plenty of attention from supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about the comments from Hasenhuttl

“He definitely should’ve changed. We looked totally clueless second half and typical Ralph read the game wrong, waited too long to make subs and let Everton take it. He’s clearly not thought of any new tactics or ideas in preseason”

Cavani could return against Southampton

Manchester United travel to Southampton for their second Premier League game of the season this afternoon, and they’ll be hoping to make it back-to-back victories on the south coast.

The Red Devils began their 2021/22 campaign in emphatic style last weekend, demolishing Leeds United 5-1 in a stunning display at Old Trafford.

What’s the word?

United’s thrashing of Leeds was made even more impressive by the fact that they were missing star striker Edinson Cavani from the matchday squad altogether, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that he should be able to call upon the Uruguay international this time around.

“Edinson’s always looked after himself and is lacking in team training, football training; he had different reasons to why he came late,” revealed the manager in Saturday’s press conference.

“There were some personal reasons, and his body can tolerate a lot. It was something required not physically, a different matter, he’s ready to train, ready to go and let’s see how much we can get out of him.”

The return of the Uruguay veteran may not be the only boost to United when they take on the Saints in today’s 2pm kick-off. Solskjaer also provided an update on the fitness levels of summer signing Raphael Varane, stating that the former Real Madrid centre-back could travel with the squad following his £41m move.

The Red Devils boss stated of the Frenchman: “He’s been keeping fit, he’s a naturally fit lad, and he’s had a good week. He’s coming through the last session, and if that goes well, he’ll probably travel.

“Looking at him from afar, you see he’s a professional and humble lad, he’s a winner. He’s still asking questions, he wants to learn about how we want to play, and he’s hard-working. Of course, he wants to do the foundation first before he goes into a very intense season, I’m sure.”

Solskjaer will be delighted

Despite Cavani being well into the twilight of his career, the 34-year-old played a pivotal part in United’s success last season, bagging 17 goals and providing six assists in 39 appearances for the Old Trafford giants.

Therefore, his return to match fitness, coupled with Varane’s potential availability, will surely leave Solskjaer feeling delighted and confident of picking up another three points at St Mary’s.

Geeves call-up caps dramatic year

Tasmania’s Brett Geeves and Jason Krejza have both fought back from tough 2007 off-seasons to earn higher honours

Brett Geeves, the Tasmania fast bowler, was considering a new career a year ago. He had struggled to pin down a permanent place in the triumphant Tasmania Pura Cup squad of 2006-07 and with the state’s pace stocks looking strong, he was in danger of being cut by the Tigers. Now he could become Australia’s newest one-day international player having been called into the squad to take on Bangladesh after Brett Lee pulled out due to his marriage break-up. It caps off a remarkable year for Geeves, who was unexpectedly signed by the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League and played alongside Virender Sehwag, Glenn McGrath and Daniel Vettori.”I was checking the Saturday employment guides pretty carefully,” Geeves told the of his situation during the 2007 off-season. “I wasn’t far off maybe losing my state contract and having to pursue other areas.”His 12 wickets in the Pura Cup in 2006-07 had come at 63.83, he was overlooked for the decider, and his one-day average and economy rate had ballooned as well. His response was to train with a Tasmanian football team during the winter to get himself in the best possible shape to resurrect his career.”It has been a pretty big turnaround, I’ve worked pretty hard in the gym and with the Glenorchy footy boys,” Geeves said. “It has certainly paid off and I certainly credit that to the success I had last year in the domestic season.”It was quite a fightback. In 2007-08 he was Tasmania’s Player of the Year, the equal leading wicket taker in the domestic one-day competition and Man of the Match in the team’s FR Cup final victory. While Geeves, 26, is in line for Australia selection, his Tasmania team-mate Jason Krejza also enjoyed an unexpected call-up this week after being picked for Australia A.Krejza, an offpsinning allrounder, also had a tough off-season in 2007 when he was caught drink-driving and speeding, and lost his licence for seven months. Tasmania suspended him from their pre-season training and banned him from alcohol for the whole of 2007-08.He picked up 18 Pura Cup wickets last summer and although they came at 47.11 apiece, it was enough for him to go on next month’s Australia A trip to India. “I’m proud of the way that I came out of it,” Krejza said of his driving offence. “I have got Tassie cricket to thank for that, they helped me quite a lot to get through that.”As you can see right now, my cricket is right on track so I’m very proud of that fact. Things like that can happen and put your world in perspective to see what is most important to you and I found out cricket is. It always was and I just had to get my priorities right and I did that.”

Saints fans love Small signing

Southampton fans are delighted with the news that they have completed the signing of Thierry Small from Everton.

The Saints have eventually gotten very busy in the transfer window as it has progressed, and it is clear they have a transfer policy of signing younger players.

Romain Perraud (southamptonfc.com), Danyl Simeu (chelseafc.com), Valentino Livramento, Armando Broja and Adam Armstrong have all made the switch to St. Mary’s Stadium and are all aged under 25.

Now, they have brought in another rising prospect, capturing the signing of Small, who had made just one senior appearance for the Toffees (Transfermarkt).

Although it is unclear exactly how much the south-coast outfit will pay for the left-back, previous reports have suggested the Saints could pay £5m for the 17-year-old (Hampshire Live).

The news was shared on Twitter by Southampton’s official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on the latest deal.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Small deal

Sponsor row threatens Stanford game

The verbal battle between Digicel and Stanford 20/20 continued yesterday with Digicel reacting to a Stanford’s rejection of its compromise offer with a statement accusing the tournament organisers of “inaccuracies” in its press release

The possibility of November’s Stanford 20/20 for 20 match being scrapped increased over the weekend after attempts to broker a compromise in a row between the Stanford organisers and Digicel, the multi-million dollar sponsors of the West Indies Cricket Board, failed.Digicel maintains that its existing five-year deal with the WICB includes the Stanford match as it is officially sanctioned by the board and the team is, in effect, a fully representative side. Stanford counters that it is not an official side and, as such, is outside any existing sponsorship deal. The matter has already reached the High Court in London where Digicel were granted an injunction against Stanford proceeding with the event, and arbitration is due to begin on October 3. Last week, Digicel issued a three-point offer, but this was rejected on Saturday by Stanford.Yesterday, Digicel issued a terse statement in which it accused the tournament organisers of “inaccuracies” in its press release and questioning the willingness of the Stanford set-up to resolve the matter.Digicel also claimed that Stanford officials have refused to meet to discuss the stand-off, adding that they had also declined to engage in any negotiations involving the West Indies board. “Digicel’s response to Stanford’s weak proposal urged the parties to continue negotiating and to focus efforts on finding an acceptable compromise solution,” a spokesman said. “Regrettably, Stanford flatly refused to meet with all parties and stated categorically that it refused to engage in any negotiation process involving the WICB.”A media release issued on Sunday by Digicel said it had sought to hold meetings with Stanford and the WICB in the light of the rejection of its compromise offer, but instead Stanford had themselves issued a media release blaming Digicel for the stalemate.”Whilst Digicel would not argue with Stanford’s entitlement to communicate with the media as it sees fits, it would point out that Stanford declined to properly explain in its release that the proposal put forward by it was expressly limited to one year as distinct from mirroring the duration of Digicel’s exclusive sponsorship agreement with the WICB,” Digicel said. “Further, the press release declined to explain the various restrictions which Stanford sought to impose on Digicel.”The WICB has remained almost silent in recent days as Digicel, its premier sponsor, and Stanford, a source of tremendous revenue and exposure for Caribbean cricket, slug it out in the media. But there is a growing concern that the row could threaten the Stanford 20/20 for 20 match. Neither side has shown any willingness to back down, and a sponsorship insider told Cricinfo that “Digicel has been pushed as far as it is prepared to go”. He continued: “The company is very confident about its legal ground on this one.”If arbitration fails to produce a settlement then the high court would have less than a fortnight to hear the case and make a decision. The Stanford warm-up matches start on October 25.
