Celtic must be kicking themselves as they watch 24-year-old transfer target Ivan Toney lighting up the Championship this season. The striker attracted a lot of attention during his time with Peterborough and eventually went on to sign for Brentford for a reported £5million fee.

He hasn’t hesitated in rolling up his sleeves and getting stuck into life at his new club. In 11 appearances, Toney has netted an astonishing ten goals and one assist for the Bees. He is behind only Blackburn’s Adam Armstrong as the Championship’s highest scorers, already making his mark and showcasing his threat in front of goal (via BBC Sport).

Last season, Toney netted 24 goals in 32 League One appearances for his former club (via Transfermarkt).

These numbers will be everything Nick Hammond and co didn’t want to see. According to the Daily Record, Celtic tabled a £5million offer for Toney, but Peterborough knocked it back. Only to accept a similar offer from Brentford not long after. The Hoops should have pushed a little harder to make the officials at the Posh crumble – they would certainly be reaping the benefits from signing the Englishman if they had.

Neil Lennon’s attack is currently struggling with consistency. Other than Mohamed Elyounoussi, Celtic’s frontmen have been irregular in their performances. Odsonne Edouard has managed to net just once in the last nine games and has proven to be out of sorts since he returned from his self-isolation period.

Leigh Griffiths appears to have lost the faith of the manager, being subject to only appearances off the bench so far. Albian Ajeti has also been an inconsistent player and it’s left Lennon with a lot of thinking to do.

Unless his deal is made permanent, Elyounoussi will be leaving Parkhead at the end of the season. Similarly, Edouard’s time looks like it’s drawing near as well. More and more clubs are showing interest in him, including the likes of Arsenal. It’s more than likely that the Frenchman will succumb to the temptation of Premier League football, leaving Lennon with an extremely bare attacking roster.

Someone like Toney would have been the perfect signing. His eye for a goal is incredible and wouldn’t have cost the earth to bring to Celtic Park. At 24, he still has a lot of years left in him to develop as well. Hammond and Lennon will be furious they missed out on bringing him in.

وعن مقارنته بـ جوارديولا: “أعتبر هذا إيجابيًا، لأن جوارديولا أفضل مدرب في العالم، وبالنسبة لي مرجع كلاعب ومدرب”.

وأردف بالحديث عن الإصابات في الفريق: “سنعمل على حل هذا الأمر، لأننا عانينا بسبب الإصابات خلال الفترة الماضية، نحن قلقون بشأن الإصابات، وسنتحدث مع الجهاز الطبي لعدم غياب اللاعبين مرة أخرى”.

واعترف: “نحن لا نمر بأفضل مراحلنا، قد تكون هذه الفترة من أصعب المراحل في تاريخنا، لكننا لدينا مشروع موحد جميعًا”.

وشدد: “أتذكر الكثير من النصائح التي حصلت عليها من المدربين السابقين، بيب وإنريكي وأيضًا يوهان كرويف”.

وعن رحيل ميسي: “كنت أتمنى تدريبه، لكن ليس هو فقط، أيضًا إيتو ورونالدينيو لكن ليس لدينا أيًا منهما الآن”.

وكشف: “ليونيل ميسي صديقي، لقد بعث لي رسالة بعدما علم بخبر توقيعي إلى برشلونة، وتمنى لي التوفيق في هذه الرحلة”.

After arriving in a £6m deal from Chelsea in the summer of 2017, it’s fair to say things haven’t quite worked out for Christian Atsu at Newcastle.

So much so that his only appearance in a Newcastle shirt this season has been a ten-minute outing in the Carabao Cup against Blackburn Rovers in the second round – other than that, he hasn’t even made a single match-day squad.

The Ghana international enjoyed his best time on Tyneside under Benitez, scoring eight goals and providing five assists, but current boss Steve Bruce has made his feelings clear about him.

Speaking earlier in September, he said: “I like Christian – the same goes for (Yoshinori) Muto – trains every day, works tirelessly, (and is) a good professional. But in a situation where, are they going to play enough? There has to come a time when they go and play football.”

Atsu failed to get a move away from St James’ Park however, and whilst his contract is coming to an end when the season finishes, he will still have cost the club some big-money.

In fact, coupled with his transfer fee and wages, the Ghanaian will have cost Newcastle £11.5m since arriving. A complete waste of resources on a player who just hasn’t hit the heights.

Tottenham Hotspur have relinquished their place atop the Premier League table as they were beaten by defending champions Liverpool at Anfield this evening.

Jose Mourinho’s side had plenty of chances to win the game at 1-1 through Harry Kane and Steven Bergwijn, who both should have done better in front of goal.

Whilst multi-million pound signings and marquee transfers are all well and good, nothing quite beats an academy talent coming through and making his mark on the first-team.

And in Wolves’ case, the next young starlet to really make his breakthrough under Nuno Espirito Santo could well be Theo Corbeanu.

The 18-year-old has been a regular for the club’s U23s at Premier League 2 level, and has shown off his versatility this season by playing through the middle and out wide on the right.

Such is his skilful nature and ability to drive forward with pace and purpose, The Athletic journalist Tim Spiers even suggested that there are some shades of former Wolves star Diogo Jota about him in that he has that deceptive speed and strength to his game.

And Corbeanu himself has made it clear how much he’s learning from Nuno, saying: “It’s great working with Nuno, he’s a very good manager, he has a clear identity, you know how to play, it’s the Wolves way. He came in and changed so much and the club has been on an uprise for the past three years. It’s great to learn from him. I’m a young player and I have a lot of things to work on. There’s no one better than to work with him.”

With his ability to play off both feet like a Kevin De Bruyne, he could add a sense of unpredictability to Wolves’ attacks. Spiers further added that “he’s skilful, can take players on, score and create goals and is decent in the air (at 6ft 2in)”.

That level of potential is surely worth taking a look in the first-team, certainly not as a starter anytime soon, but as a potential impact sub. Corbeanu is just waiting to take his chance.
