West Ham have struggled in front of goal this season but Manuel Pellegrini is aware of a solution which could ease their worries in that area.

What did he say?

Sebastien Haller, who signed for an initial £40m in the summer, has had a reasonably good start to his West Ham career with four goals to his name, and although he has impressed fans so far he still has to do a bit more to convince his manager.

The likes of Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini were criticised for their performances against Everton, and the lack of chances they created for the striker, but instead the Chilean points to a deficiency in an area of Haller’s game.

In his Sheffield United pre-match press conference, as reported by Football.London, he said:

“He has not done bad but he can do better also. He has started better, now he must make more movements inside the box because we need to score more goals.”

His comments indicate that Haller is responsible for not providing enough bite to West Ham’s attack in recent matches, and considering some of his goals have come as a result of his poaching ability in the box – including against Watford and Crystal Palace – the Hammers boss might have a point.

Setting high standards

Even upon his arrival at the club Pellegrini spoke of a “big club mentality”, and it is a positive that he is looking to reach that goal by setting high expectations of his players.

Haller falls under that bracket, and if he can become more lively in the way his manager wishes, then he should be able to become even more important for his new side.

However, it is quite strange that Pellegrini hasn’t applied the same stringent standards to other players in the squad, most notably his more creative players who are failing to provide the service that the German requires.

Pablo Fornals was brought in to help in that regard, but he has so far struggled to adjust to his new surroundings and is yet to register an assist in the Premier League.

It is a similar story for the more experienced Manuel Lanzini and Felipe Anderson, who have recorded a combined total of six assists this term despite making eight and ten appearances respectively, which shows they are underperforming.

As a result, Haller’s improvement does depend somewhat on how his teammates fare, but making himself more of a nuisance will do no harm, and could lead West Ham to improve on their poor return of 11 goals in nine league games.

Having joined from Sporting CP when Louis van Gaal was manager, Marcos Rojo hasn’t exactly enjoyed the greatest of Manchester United careers.

The Argentina international has struggled to nail down a place in the first-team, and since his arrival back in the summer of 2014 for a reported fee of £16m, he has made just 117 appearances across all competitions.

Following Axel Tuanzebe’s withdrawal in the warm-up before the clash against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, Rojo was the man to come in.

The 29-year-old had a generally solid game at the back, making five clearances and one tackle as the Red Devils almost clinched a precious victory. But the Argentine’s standout moment of the match came when he smashed the ball into a grounded Adam Lallana, before doing the exact same to Roberto Firmino seconds later.

It was a moment that went down a treat with the United faithful on Twitter, who took to social media to hail the former Sporting man.

Many supporters of the Manchester side insisted the kind of passion and aggression is exactly what the team needs, with one fan in particular affectionately calling him a “mad dog”.

وتابع: “المشاكل الإدارية التي حدثت أثرت على اللاعبين، ولم يركزوا في الملعب، ولا نريد أن نظلم اللجنة المؤقتة لإدارة الزمالك، لأن عليهم حمل كبير، وأتمنى إجراء انتخابات سريعة لكي تستقر الأمور لأن هذا الحل الوحيد”.

وأضاف: “لن أترشح في الانتخابات المُقبلة على عضوية نادي الزمالك”.

واستكمل: “التجديد لـ فرجاني ساسي لابد منه، ولكن على الإدارة أن تتعامل مع هذا الملف (بحرفنة) حتى لا يتأثر بقية اللاعبين”.

واختتم بالتعليق عن أزمة طاقم تحكيم مباراة القمة المُقبلة في الدوري: “لا أعرف لماذا الإصرار على الحكم المصري وصنع مشكلة ليس لها أي داعي، من وقت أن ولدنا ونرى الزمالك والأهلي بحكام أجانب، لكن هناك أمر غير مفهوم لا أعرفه”.

Mesut Ozil’s attitude on the pitch can sometimes be called into question.

Indeed, for years we’ve seen the German criticised for his unwillingness to track back and his inability to turn up against the top sides.

However, now we’re having to have a serious think about his attitude off of the pitch, after a recent Bleacher Report article outlined his plans at the club.

Sources close to B/R apparently told them that Ozil doesn’t intend on asking to leave anytime soon as he still enjoys picking up his £350,000 a week wages.

Instead, they state that Ozil is going to bide his time and judge whether or not Unai Emery will still be at the club next season.

The fact that the midfielder’s plans at Arsenal hinge on the manager being sacked is ridiculous, and if this is the case then the club have some serious thinking to do.

The article also states that sources close to the player expect him to move to MLS when he eventually does leave Arsenal, but that move should happen sooner rather than later.

Emery is never going to be a success in London if his highest-paid star is simply waiting for him to be sacked.

What sort of culture does this create at a football club?

It’s a farcical situation, and Arsenal shouldn’t bow to the whims of player power.

It’s time for the Gunners to get behind the manager – they should make it clear to Ozil that Emery is going to be staying and see how he reacts.

It’s not about the former PSG boss being the right man for Arsenal, it’s about making it clear to every single player in that dressing room that the manager is the most important man at the club.

وأردف: “الفرق الإنجليزية انضمت للبطولة لأن المُلاك أمريكيين، لأنك في أوروبا تنفق الكثير من الأموال وربما لا تربح، في الولايات المتحدة يفكرون أولًا في الربح، أهم شيء بالنسبة لهم الأموال”.

وأكمل: “دوري السوبر الأوروبي سيلحق الضرر بكرة القدم، ويجب أن نتجنب ذلك، لابد من حوار هادئ بين جميع الأطراف”.

وواصل: “الحل هو خفض التكاليف، في دوري السوبر الأوروبي تحاول الأندية حل مشكلة الديون التي تفاقمت عليها بسبب الوباء، لكن الحل لا يمكن أن يكون من خلال المزيد من الأموال ودفع المزيد من اللاعبين والوكلاء، نحتاج إلى أن تكون الأمور أبسط”.

وشدد: “لقد بالغنا في الانفاقات، أنفقنا الكثير من الأموال، الجميع بدون استثناء، لست أنا فقط، ولا أتحدث عن نادٍ مُعين، حان الوقت الآن لنكون أقل غطرسة”.

وعن التواصل مع أنييلي رئيس يوفنتوس، قال: “للأسف أردت الحديث معه لكنني لم أستطع، لا أعرف دوافعه في المشاركة وتأسيس البطولة، وبدون ما يخبرني، لكنني لن أنتقده، ربما هناك سببًا لا أعرفه، عندما نتحدث سأفهم”.

واستكمل: “بعد انتقال نيمار إلى باريس سان جيرمان بـ 222 مليون السوق انفجر، لكننا كنا على الطريق الخطأ، وليس الاتحاد الأوروبي أو الفيفا، الآن علينا إيجاد حلول والعودة إلى كرة القدم الأكثر عقلانية”.

واختتم: “آمل ألا أتخيل دوري أبطال أوروبا بدون الكبار مثل ريال مدريد ويوفنتوس وليفربول، بدون هذه الفرق الـ12 فإن المنافسة ستتضرر كثيرًا”.

It has been a difficult time for Lucas Torreira recently at the Emirates Stadium.

The Uruguay international has started just two Premier League games so far this campaign, with Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi being regularly preferred in the middle of the park.

So far, the 23-year-old has had to make do with appearances in the cup competitions, including his start against Liverpool on Wednesday in the League Cup.

Certain things are beginning to get to the 21-cap man. Following Granit Xhaka’s outburst directed at the supporters at the Emirates Stadium against Crystal Palace on Sunday, £49.5m-valued Torreira was in tears on the sidelines and was even said to be inconsolable.

Clearly, he has a lot of admiration for his captain and was unable to hold that in against the Eagles.

Although Arsenal lost against Liverpool, his strike allowed him to release some of that frustration in a positive manner, in contrast to the 27-year-old Switzerland international. He will now be hoping to feature more regularly in the coming weeks and months.

Earlier in the week, the worst kept secret at West Brom was finally revealed as Gareth Barry officially re-signed with the club.

The 38-year-old’s original contract expired back in June, but he continued to train with the club while recovering from injury, and manager Slaven Bilic had always made it clear on his intentions to keep hold of the veteran midfielder.

At one stage, it looked unlikely to even happen as a snag involving his former club Everton nearly put pay to any deal with the Premier League club due money from any agreement, but that was soon resolved.

Barry originally joined the Hawthorns under Tony Pulis in the summer of 2017 and has gone on to make 55 appearances even despite his age.

But that is why he is still hanging around.

The Albion boss said in an interview that Barry’s presence would be a boost to their promotion hopes, but it would also impact the youngsters at the club:

“He would be a major boost for us and one that comes from within too. He already knows the place and most of the players. We have a lot of young players. At times they need the kind of support that he can bring.”

His experience is unprecedented, having made 653 appearances in the Premier League, which is very much the end goal for the everyone involved at the Hawthorns.

As Bilic says, this decision was made for off-the-field reasons just as much as anything else, so a player like Rekeem Harper should get excited as his career could well be revived by having such a figure around.

The 19-year-old was probably one of the most highly-rated prospects amongst the academy setup, so much so that Liverpool and Juventus were in for him in the summer until the Croatian persuaded him to stay in the west Midlands.

Yet, he’s only been limited to just six minutes of Championship action, which came on the opening day. He hasn’t even been named in the matchday squad since August either, per Transfermarkt.

Harper was one of the few youngsters that weren’t sent out on loan, such as Sam Field and Jonathan Leko who both joined Charlton Athletic, so he clearly has a decent opportunity to break into Bilic’s senior thoughts, although it’s just not happened yet.

This is where Barry comes in, he can help mentor the young prospect into what he should have become a long time ago.

He signed a three-year deal in the summer, so there is plenty of time still on his side.

According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a £50m swoop for Lyon attacker Memphis Depay, who has impressed since leaving Manchester United in 2017.

The Netherlands international only managed seven goals in 53 games for United, which is hardly a great return for a player in the final third of the field.

Since moving to Lyon, though, the 25-year-old has registered 50 goals in 130 appearances, in addition to contributing an impressive 42 assists.

This season, the Dutchman has 11 goals in 14 matches in all competitions, including seven in 10 outings in France’s top flight.

According to The Mirror, Spurs are weighing up a £50m bid for Depay, but it would be fair to say that the club’s fans are not interested in a deal.

Indeed, a number of the supporters have taken to social media to express their views on the transfer claim, and not too many are in favour of the attacker arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
