Real Madrid sent shockwaves through the footballing world when they signed the young Takefusa Kubo this summer.

Of course, big clubs like Los Blancos often snatch up the very best prospects on the planet but this 18-year-old was very much a special prize for Florentino Perez and his squad.

Kubo spent some of his youth years at Barcelona’s academy but had to move back to his homeland in Japan in 2015. No one could expect that this young star could make a big switch to Real Madrid. But he did and now he’s defending Los Blancos’ colours instead of the Blaugrana.

Real Madrid have decided, however, that it would be for the best if he joined another La Liga team on loan and gained some experience before going back to the capital once again. Kubo was shipped off to Mallorca, where he soon made his debut against Valencia in an unfortunate 2-0 defeat.

But he didn’t stop there. Just the other day, the 18-year-old Japanese sensation featured for his national team in the World Cup qualifier match, making another big appearance on a huge footballing stage.

By the looks of it, the youngster is slowly but surely gaining experience, skill and reputation to one day become a true Galactico for Real Madrid.

There’s been a lot of talk about a potential Real Madrid revolution and how they need big stars and costly players to join in order to kick-start it but Los Blancos might already have all they need in Kubo, they just have to put some faith and effort into him.

In 13 games in the Japanese top-flight in 2018/19, the youngster scored and assisted four goals while adding one more in the domestic Cup. At such a young age, he has already won six caps for the Japan national team and has now become the youngest player in the national team to play in a match in the Asian World Cup qualifiers at the age of just 18 years and 98 days.

Sending him on loan was the right choice if he was not going to get any valuable and meaningful minutes in the first-team of Real Madrid and once that spell comes to an end, he will be ready to slot into the squad almost certainly.

Even now, looking at his recent performances, Kubo was a joy to watch. Granted, it was in games where his game time was limited and he couldn’t show everything he’s capable of. But we are already aware of his skills and that is just the beginning.

He was supposed to be the “Japanese Messi”, and he just might still be, only this Messi will be donning White colours rather than the famous red and blue.

Lionel Messi is someone every single football fan in the world knows about. And it’s pretty safe to say that whether you’re a Barcelona fan or not, Messi is someone you’re very much familiar with.

But the Argentine wizard, as brilliant and unreal as he still may be, is now slowly but surely making the first strides into his 30s and while he’s certainly an immortal in the context of footballing history, he won’t be able to score goals for Barcelona perennially.

One Messi who’s not as popular, however, is one of his sons, Mateo, who just turned four years old the other day.

Young Messi is, fortunately, a fan of football and his mother posted video footage of him scoring some goals in what seemed to be the family’s backyard.

Needless to say, many Barcelona fans were quick to jump to Twitter and gush all over that footage, calling the young kid the “next goat” and even saying he might go on to be “better than Messi” himself.

Of course, many were joking but they will seriously hope young Mateo becomes the next big thing in the future.

Nottingham Forest continued a run of fine form by ending Swansea City’s unbeaten start to the Championship season at the weekend.

It is a sixth straight league game without defeat for Sabri Lamouchi’s men as substitute Alfa Semedo tapped home Lewis Grabban’s cross from the byline with just five minutes remaining at the Liberty Stadium.

The Reds boss made five changes for the game, which saw Jack Robinson and Joe Lolley surprisingly dropped to the bench as both players had started at least five of their seven games this season.

But the latter did play some part in the match as he came on in the 59th minute.

His work ethic and team-first mentality were displayed when he risked jumping in with what could have been a rather reckless tackle.

Several supporters at the City Ground reacted to this moment in the match.

One claimed it was ‘cracking defending’ while another praised his commitment and passion.

Lolley was one of Forest’s most influential players last season, recording the most assists in the side with 11 while also scoring the same number of goals, per WhoScored.

The 27-year-old is yet to fully hit the ground running this season having laid on just one assist in six league appearances.

A further fan said that ‘Psycho’ (a.k.a. Stuart Pearce) would have been proud of that tackle with one supporter believing the club were lucky even to have Lolley.

ويمر برشلونة بوضع مالي سيء منذ تفشي وباء كورونا (كوفيد 19)، وأثره السلبي على الاقتصاد العالمي.

شهدت الأندية انخفاضًا في دخلها وهناك القليل من المال للصفقات، والوضع معقد أيضًا لأن بعض اللاعبين الذين يمكن أن يطرحهم برشلونة في السوق لديهم رواتب تجعل بيعهم صعبًا للغاية.

Crystal Palace’s start to the season has been a mixed one, to say the least.

Impressive wins over Manchester United and Aston Villa have been slightly stained by a drab defeat to Sheffield United and a disappointing draw against 10-men Wolves, but one thing has remained constant – their lack of depth at full-back.

As it stands, the south Londoners have just one senior left-back and one senior right-back in Joel Ward and Patrick van Aanholt – if you decide to see Jeffrey Schlupp as a midfielder now, of course.

However, a recent transfer target could help add depth to both of these positions.

The Sun (print version, 22 September, page 61) reported earlier this week that Crystal Palace are interested in signing West Brom youngster Nathan Ferguson as they look to add cover to their full-back positions.

The 18-year-old is an encouraging target for the south Londoners due to his age and potential to improve – we have previously detailed the problems that come with Palace often signing older players, who end up leaving the Eagles in a problematic position in terms of failing to make a profit on their investments.

Ferguson has shown plenty of signs so far this season to suggest that he is a promising young player whose value will only grow as he learns his trade in the game – he has started seven of the Baggies’ Championship games this term, grabbing one assist while making 2.6 tackles and 2.6 clearances per game. Decent beginnings.

With just Ward and van Aanholt available, those areas of the field are problematic for Palace – even more so after the latter’s worrying display against Tottenham, which did not go down well with some supporters.

Roy Hodgson was recently forced to play academy centre-back Sam Woods and centre-midfielder Jairo Riedewald at right-back and left-back respectively in the Carabao Cup, after injuries to Ward and van Aanholt – the 72-year-old later said he felt “sorry” for the makeshift duo. Indeed, Palace lost the game on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

Significantly, Ferguson can actually play in both full-back positions, having appeared four times on the right of Slaven Bilic’s backline so far this term, as well as three times on the left. That could make him an incredibly important member of Hodgson’s squad, even if it’s primarily from the bench.

He does lack a little going forward, averaging just 0.3 key passes per game this season, but the trade-off appears to be greater defensive solidity, and that only fits the Hodgson mould after his side finished up with the sixth-most clean sheets of any Premier League side last term.

Ferguson, then, appears to tick some crucial boxes in terms of the type of defender Palace need – defensively sound, versatile and offering genuine resale value. We’ll have to see whether that’s enough to convince the Eagles to make a concerted effort for his services.
