According to The Sunday Mirror (July 14, page 67), Charlie Austin has turned down a move to West Brom this summer.

What’s the word?

West Brom played out their first pre-season friendly over the weekend, being defeated 3-0 by Villarreal.

The Baggies were lacking any direct strikers with Oliver Burke being forced to play up top.

And with that in mind, Albion are in desperate need of signing a new forward.

They’ve already seen Dwight Gayle return to Newcastle following his loan spell whilst Jay Rodriguez has moved to Burnley.

However, they’ve now been dealt another huge blow. The Sunday Mirror (July 14, page 67) claims that West Brom and Southampton had agreed a fee for Austin, but he has rejected the chance to move.

Dowling decision could backfire

West Brom have been incredibly slow when it’s come to transfer business this summer and with just three weeks to go until the new season commences, they’re left with some considerable holes still to fill.

Only Filip Krovinovic has walked through the doors of the Hawthorns but the setback they’ve suffered with Austin could have greater ramifications.

The truth is that West Brom waited too long to appoint a new manager, regardless of how big a coup Slaven Bilic arguably was for the Baggies.

Had they appointed someone quicker following the sacking of Darren Moore, their preparations for the upcoming campaign could have been in place far sooner.

Technical director Luke Dowling’s waiting game, therefore, could backfire spectacularly.

Albion have left themselves with an almighty job to do in the transfer market and the fact Austin has now rejected a move will only further set them back in their summer, meaning there’s now even less time to integrate new players.

West Brom may have finally got their man in Bilic, but he’s arguably been left with too little time to bring in fresh faces.

Of course, things can happen very quickly in football, but at the moment, Dowling could be left red-faced come the end of the summer.

After securing yet another Champions League trophy in June, all eyes for Liverpool will surely be on eclipsing Pep Guardiola’s rampant Manchester City side in the Premier League.

The Reds, to their credit, took the contest right to the bitter end last term, but came up short in what was a thrilling title race.

Following a rather low-key summer window by their standards, Jurgen Klopp’s side will head into the new season with barely any new faces as things stand, and the hope will be that those who did the business for them in Europe can do so again domestically.

We’ve had a go at predicting how they might look for that opening Premier League game of the season against Norwich at Anfield.

In goal, Alisson will continue as the Reds’ undisputed first-choice goalkeeper following an impressive campaign both at club and international level. After being named the Best Goalkeeper at the 2019 Copa America, it’s fair to say the Brazilian’s spirits will be at a real high.

In front of him, Liverpool’s miserly defence from last season is likely to be at full strength. Joe Gomez’s recovery from injury towards the closing stages of the campaign was a major boost and he could well be the man to partner Virgil van Dijk at centre-back, despite Joel Matip ending the season strongly.

On the flanks, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold will look to solidify their claims as being the Premier League’s most productive full-backs.

Midfield is perhaps the one spot where there does appear to be a grey area. Klopp’s rotation policy has seen the side’s trio in the middle of the park vary often throughout the last few seasons.

On paper though, Fabinho is the specialist option at the base of midfield, whilst Naby Keita’s injury woes at the Africa Cup of Nations are a real source of concern.

The 24-year-old was hampered by setbacks last season and though a recent update offers a ray of hope for him to potentially make the team on the opening day of the campaign, Georginio Wijnaldum seems likelier to start instead after a brilliant 2019/20 that saw him start 32 of Liverpool’s Premier League games.

To complete Klopp’s midfield three, club captain Jordan Henderson will likely figure prominently despite some criticism from certain sections over his worth to the team. The skipper really came into his own towards the end of last season, revitalised in a more offensive capacity after discussions with Jurgen Klopp.

Up front, Klopp’s desire to play his three regulars is unlikely to be recognised against Norwich as Sadio Mane continues to inspire Senegal at AFCON.

The winger is unlikely to be rushed back into the first-team fold with the tournament only ending on Friday (three weeks from the Premier League’s opening weekend), and so that could mean a rare opportunity for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to feature.

He’s mainly been deployed as a central midfielder during his time at Anfield but the England international featured regularly as a winger for Arsenal and Southampton and would help plug a temporary gap for Klopp.

ويرصد “بطولات” في السطور التالية ما جاء في صحف جنوب إفريقيا عن مباراة الأهلي والدحيل ..

شبكة “iol” قالت: “الأهلي بقيادة بيتسو موسيماني يواجه بايرن ميونخ بعد وضع حدًا لهزائم الأندية الإفريقية في كأس العالم للأندية”.

وقالت الشبكة في تقريرها: “أصبح الأهلي المصري أول فريق إفريقي منذ 2013 يفوز بمباراته الافتتاحية في كأس العالم للأندية عندما تغلب على الدحيل من البلد المضيف قطر 1-0 يوم الخميس في ربع النهائي”.

وأضافت: “الآن فريق الشياطين الحمر القادم من القاهرة سيواجه في نصف النهائي يوم الاثنين القادم فريق بايرن ميونخ الفائز بدوري أبطال أوروبا وحامل اللقب”.

وواصلت: “مرتديًا اللون الرمادي والأسود بسبب اشتباك ملون مع شريط الدحيل الأحمر، تقدم الأهلي بفضل هدف في الدقيقة 30 من لاعب الوسط حسين الشحات”.

Neil Lennon issued a transfer update ahead of the Nomme Kalju game, and the Celtic fans are far from pleased.

The Celts boss claimed that they will look to strengthen the squad further after the two-legged clash with the Estonian champions, and also reminded everyone to be patient as transfers are “a slow process” and quality is what’s important.

“If you can negotiate this tie then we can hopefully look at strengthening the side going into the third round. It can be a slow process at times but you want quality,” he said.

The club did, however, announce the signing Hatem Abd Elhamed on Wednesday, shortly after the gaffer’s comments.

The Israeli utility man joins Christopher Jullien, Luca Connell and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo in coming to Parkhead this summer. His arrival takes the club’s spending to around £12m this window as they look to replicate the success of last season.

But Lennon’s update has worried fans, who would like bodies through the door as soon as possible.

The supporters have seen right-backs Mikael Lustig, Jeremy Toljan and Cristian Gamboa leave the club this summer, yet Abd Elhamed, who is not a specialised right-back, has been the only replacement brought in thus far.

Leeds fans have been left puzzled and concerned over Patrick Bamford following their latest pre-season friendly with Cagliari.

The Whites drew 1-1 with the Italian opposition but the former Middlesbrough man continued to frustrate in what has seemingly been a difficult period for the 25-year-old.

Bamford arrived at Elland Road last summer but missed a total of 22 games through injury and was even banned at one stage for deceiving the officials following an incident against Aston Villa.

And after his display at the weekend, supporters took to Twitter to register their concerns. One individual expressed that he didn’t think Leeds were playing to his strengths whilst another said he never bullied centre-halves when playing up front. A further fan said he looked confused.

Others were far more aggressive in their response as he was labelled a fraud. One fan even said that his body language was shocking.

The attacker scored nine times in the Championship last term which was quite an impressive total despite only starting 16 matches.

However, his season was marred by injury and a lack of discipline as he found himself booked for diving in the play-offs too.

Winston Reid has returned to full training at West Ham United, per ClaretandHugh.

What’s the word?

The central defender has struggled with injury woes throughout the past two seasons.

He did not make a single appearance in 2018/19 due to a knee problem.

However, he is now back in training with the new season drawing ever closer.

Indeed, ClaretandHugh reports that the New Zealand international will rejoin the first-team this week following a spell of specialist training.

West Ham begin the season against Premier League champions Manchester City this weekend.

A major boost

A fit Reid will be an incredible boost to manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Indeed, the 31-year-old has made over 220 appearances for the club and has often captained the club too.

His last reasonably full season came in 2016/17, however, as he played 36 times in all competitions.

Having him back and able to compete with Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena for a starting spot gives Pellegrini depth and a welcome selection headache.

Reid is a fine defender, excellent in the air and also good on the ground and could play a key role in his side’s season.

Speaking on talkSPORT, former England manager Sam Allardyce has questioned Manchester United’s decision to sell Romelu Lukaku this summer.

What did he say?

Following weeks of speculation, Lukaku eventually joined Serie A giants Inter on deadline day in a reported £73m deal, leaving Manchester United with no time to sign a replacement.

Now, Allardyce has insisted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are light on options up front and raised concerns over the lack of different styles between their remaining forwards.

He said: “There’s been a little bit of grumbling about the lack of spending. I think the net spend has not quite been as good as the United fans expected. This is my point of view as a manager, nobody else’s; I wouldn’t have let Lukaku go because they had no replacement.

“Manchester United look a bit short up front and that is a problem. If you have the replacement then that’s fine but if you look at Manchester United’s front line then you say to yourself that it’s very talented but also very similar. I don’t think you need to be very experienced in the game to know that.

“It eludes to only one style of play… I find that rather strange when you consider the game today and it’s the diversity of the game which is what makes the Premier League so good.”

One-dimensional

Despite a truly emphatic 4-0 victory over top-four rivals Chelsea on Sunday, Manchester United’s strike-force will certainly have tougher days ahead. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez and even Mason Greenwood are likely to be electric on the counter-attack and have pace to burn.

But in games against sides with a packed defence who have no intention of trying to dominate the ball, United’s front-line may struggle to adapt. Can any of the aforementioned four, play with their back to goal and act as a platform for the side’s midfielders to link up with?

Lukaku represented an option for the Red Devils to play more direct and would cause havoc with his sheer physical presence – Rashford and co are unlikely to do the same, for all their other qualities.

So whilst things have gotten off to a great start at Old Trafford, the true impact of Lukaku’s exit will be felt against more defensive opposition.
