Dean Smith’s Aston Villa recorded their sixth consecutive victory on Saturday, coming from behind at Hillsborough to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1. Wow, this late run for promotion to the Premier League really has legs, doesn’t it?

But, the tide of the match could’ve been much different had Steven Fletcher converted his penalty kick in the 57th minute. Villa shot-stopper, Jed Steer, proved just why he is such a valuable player for the Villans as he saved Fletcher’s shot to keep the scores level at that stage of the match.

The saved penalty presented Villa with a golden opportunity to walk away with the spoils and they did exactly that thanks to goals by Albert Adomah and Tammy Abraham.

Steer’s pivotal moment though can be seen as a game-changing one and his importance in the Birmingham club’s brilliant recent form should not be underestimated.

Of course, Abraham has been simply sensational this season but Steer is slowly becoming more important.

Since returning from a loan spell at Charlton Athletic at the beginning of the year, Steer has worked hard to earn his place in Smith’s team and had to sit a few games on the bench before getting his shot in the starting lineup.

Despite Villa playing excellent attacking football in their unbeaten run, their defence has also shown loads of improvement, which Steer has had a massive hand in. Individually, he has also looked very comfortable and organised in-goal, making a number of crucial and important saves to give his teammates the upper-hand in those matches.

If Villa were to secure a spot in the Championship play-offs and incredibly manage to earn promotion to the Premier League then a lot of credit will have to go to the contribution the 26-year-old keeper has made in such a short period of time.

At just 21 years of age, he is fast becoming one of the most talented young prospects in European football, with a whole host of clubs quite sensibly chasing his signature – it must be said that it is a boost for their hopes of signing him that a powerhouse such as Barcelona have cooled their interest.

Liverpool are particularly lacking quality depth in attack, as apart from a few decent cameo appearances off the bench from Divock Origi, there isn’t really a competent replacement for Roberto Firmino.

Even if there was, the Reds would be stupid not to get involved in the race for the prolific youngster.

Charlton host Luton Town at The Valley on Saturday with the aim of climbing closer to the automatic promotion spots and extending their unbeaten run to 11 games.

They face tough opposition in the form of the league leaders though, who are on a fantastic run themselves.

Mick Harford’s side score goals for fun and this game will be the classic case of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object; Luton rarely strike out and the Addicks have kept four clean sheets in their last four games, something Lee Bowyer has been particularly pleased with.

He said: “We always feel like we’re going to score goals, and we should score more sometimes. As a team, it starts from the front, your hard work to stop them passing the ball forward, and then when it does finally get to the goalie situation then you make saves, it’s everybody you know.

“But yeah, it’s hard work, the lads are working so hard at the moment and clean sheets are massive, and I’m really pleased for them that they’re getting rewarded for the hard work.”

Particularly in the midweek win over strugglers Wycombe the Addicks had to fight for every ball – the clash was extremely physical but Bowyer’s side were up to the task as they battled their way to a third straight win.

Having a watertight defence is all well and good but if you can’t score goals then you won’t get wins. Fortunately though, Lyle Taylor has come into great form since the January departure of then-top-scorer Karlan Grant, but Bowyer hints that his side should still be doing better in front of goal.

وواصل: “المشكلة هذه المرة ليست مع الأمن، بل مع وزارة الصحة، لأن صحة الإنسان هي الأهم، سيكون هناك تنسيق بين الأهلي والأمن والاتحاد المصري والاتحاد الإفريقي بشأن ذلك”.

استكمل: “يوم 27 من أكتوبر الجاري سيتسلم الأهلي درع الدوري المصري في استاد الأهلي وي السلام بعد مباراة طلائع الجيش ونحن في تنسيق مع اللجنة الخماسية”.

What’s the word?

Rangers sit 11 points behind Celtic with the post-split fixtures still to play, and it really is just a matter of time now before the Bhoys lock up their eighth consecutive title.

The Gers are at least coming closer to turning the tides though, so much so that after they signed 14 players last summer Gerrard does not think they require another makeover.

“The only thing I will say is we will try to add more quality which will make our 11 stronger which will naturally make the squad stronger,†he said on April 6, as reported by The Belfast Telegraph.

“There won’t be wholesale changes like there was last season.

“We felt that was needed at the time. We don’t think we are as far away as certain people think we are or maybe the gap in terms of points.

“We don’t think that we are that far away but it is quite clear that we do need to add more quality to make us improve and grow.”

But as links to the likes of Greg Stewart, Jake Hastie and John Souttar show, the Gers are wasting no time searching for new signings, so is Gerrard right about the state of his squad?

Clear-out needed

Quite simply, Gerrard has got it wrong saying he doesn’t need to do loads of work this summer, but it’s not all about bringing players in.

For far too long the Gers have taken a scattergun approach in the market, and because of that the ex-Liverpool ace has arrived to an imbalanced squad in need of not just new arrivals but also trimming and re-shaping.

As noted by Ibrox Chat, if Hastie and Stewart both sign, the club will have a simply ridiculous seven wingers on their books, while only boasting three centre backs and not a single midfield playmaker.

Gerrard needs genuine top quality additions at left-back, right-wing and the number ten position, but he can’t really address that until some of the deadwood eating up all the wage bill is clear.

Brace yourself Rangers fans, another overhaul is on the way this summer whether the gaffer wants it or not.

Outspoken Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has made a prediction about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of Manchester United vs Manchester City in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.

What’s he said, then?

The Red Devils face the might of their bitter rivals off the back of a humiliating defeat at Everton on Sunday afternoon and four losses in their last six in all competitions.

Meanwhile, their opponents at Old Trafford under Pep Guardiola can go back to the top of the Premier League with three points and into the driving seat in their bid for back-to-back titles with a trio of matches remaining.

And Merson had this to say to Sky Sports on what kind of performance he expects from United:

“They will park the bus.

“You will be watching a Jose Mourinho team. After he has gone, it’s one massive swing around, it’s taken six months to swing it all the way round to see them play the way that Mourinho got hammered for.”

Well wide of the mark, Paul – completely wrong

The former England international couldn’t be further wide of the mark or more completely wrong with these pre-match comments – this really is poor punditry.

You have to question whether at all Merson has watched Man United under Solskjaer in any great detail if he’s saying stuff like that.

The former Red Devil has injected the kind of football fans have been wanting to see for a long time into the club, a free-flowing and attacking style, and he’s not going to abandon that for the methods of Jose Mourinho even if the going has gotten a little tough of late in Manchester. Never in a million years.

وأكمل: “الجميع يريد لعب دوري أبطال أوروبا، إنها المنافسة الأكبر، أن تكون قادرًا على اللعب في تلك الليالي هو أمر مثالي، وتريد دائمًا أن تأتي إلى نادٍ مثل هذا لتلك الليالي”.

وأكد: “مواجهة أولمبياكوس ستكون صعبة، سنرى ما سيحدث في المباراة، وعلينا ان نقدم أفضل ما لدينا من أجل الاقتراب أكثر من التأهل”.

وشدد: “جوارديولا أحد الأسباب التي جعلتني أنتقل إلى مانشستر سيتي، رأيت في الأشهر الماضية أنه يعمل مع اللاعبين ومعي ويظهر أشياء يمكنني تحسينها، يعمل معي على أرض الملعب في جوانب خاصة، أشعر أنني أتعلم كل يوم منه”.

واختتم: “هذه ميزة إضافية في مانشستر سيتي، أن لدينا مدرب مختلف عن البقية، أرى نفسي أتحسن بالفعل كل يوم، وآمل أن يكون هناك المزيد في المستقبل”.

تحدث هاني زادة عضو مجلس إدارة نادي الزمالك، عن تأهل فريقه إلى نهائي دوري أبطال افريقيا على حساب نظيره الرجاء المغربي بفوز برباعية مقابل هدف في مجموع المباراتين.

وقال زادة في تصريحات تلفزيونية بفضائية “تن” عبر فضائية “البريمو”: “قلت لـ أشرف صبحي لدينا أفضل جناحين أشرف بن شرقي وأحمد سيد زيرو في الفترة الأخيرة، وأفضل خط وسط طارق حامد وفرجاني ساسي، وأفضل مدافعين محمود علاء ومحمود الونش، ومحمد أبو جبل من أفضل الحراس في إفريقيا”.

وأضاف: “فريقنا عندما يكون في حالته لا يقف أمامه أي خصم، وأحمد الله أن هدف الرجاء جاء في وقت مبكر، لو كان أحرز في آخر 5 او 6 دقائق من المباراة كنا سنضطر للعب ضربات الحظ، فوز جيد ومستحق”.

واستكمل: “مرتضى منصور سيتحدث مع الفريق وسيصرف مبلغ لا بأس به، وسيزيد مكافأة الوصول للنهائي 100 ألف جنيه زائدة عن اللائحة”.

واستطرد: “الأهلي أدائه تغير منذ تولي بيتسو موسيماني المهمة، لكن إذا أجرينا تحليل لكل خط على حدٍ من الأفضل ومن الأقوى بدون تحيز، سنجد أن الزمالك من أقوى فرق القارة”.

وواصل: “ستكون هناك مكافآت خاصة في حالة الفوز بدوري أبطال إفريقيا”.

واختتم: “أخشى من بين لاعبي الأهلي عمرو السولية في خط الوسط، وجونيور أجاي عندما يكون في حالته الطبيعية، ولكنه ليس كذلك الآن”.

يذكر، أن الزمالك قد تأهل إلى مباراة الدور النهائي لمواجهة الأهلي في اللقاء المقرر له في السابع والعشرين من نوفمبر الجاري.
