Son desperate to leave Tottenham with Man Utd win

[ad_pod ]

Son Heung-Min is desperate to leave Tottenham on a good note with victory over Manchester United this weekend.

The South Korea international is set to link up with his country to play in the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates, the second time his season has been interrupted by international duty, and the winger admits that he feels remorse about leaving Tottenham.

What’s the word?

Son is a key member of South Korea’s squad, and led his country’s side to an Asian Games gold medal just five months ago.

His latest call could see him miss five games for Spurs, should South Korea head deep into the tournament.

As such, the in-form forward is desperate to leave the club in a strong position, with his final game before his departure coming against United.

“It’s not easy for me to leave the team at this important time,” Son told Sky Sports.“I feel very sad and sorry but I want to win this game and go with confidence to Dubai.”To play for your country is always a proud moment, but it’s tough for me having missed one month of the season already.”I want to go with three points, with confidence to Dubai.”Son has been superb for Spurs thus far this season, scoring eight Premier League goals, and providing six assists, in just 16 appearances.Point to proveSon is known as one of the most likeable, and affable, Premier League stars out there, but he has a point to prove against United. The winger was on international duty the last time the two sides met, with Spurs running out comfortable 3-0 winners at Old Trafford. But he is in such a rich vein of form that his new-found motivation should prove terrifying for United’s defenders. All of Son’s eight goals this season have come in his last nine outings, while he has also provided five assists in that timeframe.CheekySport’s Joel claims Spurs badly need to invest in January after not having “the balls” to beat Arsenal. Check out his uncensored opinion in the video below…Along with Harry Kane, Son is a deadly attacking weapon in Spurs’ armoury and has proved that he relishes big games; his first goal of the season was a phenomenal solo strike against Chelsea. He will be missed when he heads off, particularly given that he will miss the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea, but Spurs will believe that they can cope.Against United, he might just prove them wrong.

Pochettino factor: Tottenham move could help Leeds United’s Jack Clarke become a star

According to a recent report from The Daily Mail, Tottenham are interested in a January move for Jack Clarke. The 18-year-old currently plays his football at Championship table-toppers Leeds United having come up through the ranks at the Yorkshire giants, with his fine start to life in professional football seemingly attracting the interest of Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.

And that’s because reports suggest that the North Londoners, alongside fellow Premier League outfits Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, are interested in a move for the wing sensation, with the Pochettino factor underlining that a move to Tottenham could help the 18-year-old sensation become a star.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, throughout his time in English football at both Southampton and now Tottenham, Pochettino has proven to be an outstanding coach who gets the very best out of his group of players, but he is also hugely willing to give young players an opportunity in the first team.

Luke Shaw came on leaps and bounds under the Argentine during their time together at Southampton to thus earn a big money move to Manchester United, while the likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier, and Harry Kane have all improved greatly at Spurs to become integral players for both club and country.

And Pochettino’s desire to nurture and develop those youngsters into stars is one facet of the Argentine’s excellent management skills, and working under the 46-year-old at Tottenham would surely be of interest to Leeds’ Clarke as he seeks to make a name for himself in the game.

Ultimately, it was only back in October last year in which the 18-year-old made his senior debut for Leeds in coming on as a substitute in their 1-1 draw with Brentford in the Championship, yet that has since paved the way for the emergence of a Whites gem.

And that’s because the winger has since gone on to net two goals and lay on two assists in 11 further league appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s men, a goal and an assist of which have come in his last two league games to underline the growing influence the 18-year-old is having at Elland Road.

And with appearances in each of Leeds’ last nine Championship matches, some of which have seen him brought on at half-time, he’s clearly a player that is highly-rated by manager Bielsa and someone he feels can play a part in their promotion challenge this term – ultimately, the 18-year-old looks set for an extremely bright future.

And given how well Alli has done making the step up from the EFL to the Premier League, and indeed James Maddison at Leicester City this season, Clarke could well turn out to be another – and there’d be no better place for him to do just that than under Pochettino at Tottenham.

Yes, interest from Bournemouth and Crystal Palace may intrigue Clarke given the greater likelihood of first team football, but the chance to work under Pochettino, and thus benefit from his outstanding coaching and willingness to afford young players the chance in the first team, must trump both those options.

And given the Pochettino factor, a move to Spurs may well see the 18-year-old sensation become the star his potential suggests he can be.

Leeds plot January raid for Cavaleiro, fans react

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Leeds fans have been giving their verdict on the latest transfer news, amid claims the Whites are eyeing a move for Wolves forward Ivan Cavaleiro.

According to The Sun’s Mike McGrath, Leeds are hoping to sign Cavaleiro this month.

The Wolves attacker has started just five Premier League games this season, though that is partly due to the back injury that kept him out until late September, per Transfermarkt.

The 25 year-old has since found three Premier League goals and also added one assist (Transfermarkt), impressive returns given how limited his minutes have been.

Cavaleiro scored nine times and added 13 assists in all competitions last season, and the versatile attacker’s arrival would provide a massive boost for Marcelo Bielsa.

The boss’ attacking options are looking a little thin as summer signing Patrick Bamford is still out injured, and Cavalerio’s ability to play anywhere across the front line would be a massive help.

Jack Harrison has not been particularly impressive since his loan move from Manchester City and Jack Clarke is still very raw and inexperienced, meaning Cavaleiro could potentially walk straight into the starting line-up at Elland Road.

Plenty of fans have been running the rule over a potential move, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

The Chalkboard: Should Jurgen Klopp start Fabinho or Rafael Camacho vs Leicester?

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool have a huge game on Wednesday evening, as they welcome Leicester to Anfield with the intention of extending their lead at the top of the Premier League following Manchester City’s defeat to Newcastle United on Tuesday, although it will certainly be a tricky test against a side with some wonderfully talented individuals who managed to beat Chelsea and Manchester City over the festive period.

Big decision for Jurgen Klopp

The Reds’ official website confirmed that both Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho, who were doubts for the visit of Claude Puel’s men, have trained this week and should be fine for the game, along with Dejan Lovren and Gini Wijnaldum who also had problems.

First-choice right back Trent Alexander-Arnold is still not quite ready for a return to action, however, so Klopp must make a decision on who he starts on the right of defence against a tricky attack containing the likes of Jamie Vardy, James Maddison and Demarai Gray.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Brazilian international Fabinho can play there if needs be, although he is a natural centre midfielder, whilst James Milner, who would unquestionably deputise in that role, is missing through suspension after being sent off against Crystal Palace.

Fabinho is a player of tremendous quality, but against the likes of Gray and Vardy on the counter-attack, Klopp should probably opt for a quicker option in that position – 18-year-old Rafael Camacho.

Who is Camacho and what does he offer?

The teenager has played just one minute of Premier League action in his career (via Whoscored), playing the final stages of the 4-3 win against the Eagles last time out – he made one massively crucial tackle on Wilfried Zaha inside the box with just seconds left.

Unlike Fabinho, Camacho offers Klopp more pace down that side, and seeing as Leicester are likely to sit back and look to hit the Merseysiders on the counter-attack, perhaps a pacey player down the right flank to offer an overlap and get in behind the Foxes’ back four would be the best course of action for Klopp to take.

Paul Merson slams West Ham’s lack of consistency

[ad_pod ]

Paul Merson has criticised West Ham’s lack of consistency, according to his weekend predictions on Sky Sports.

The club held Liverpool to a creditable 1-1 draw on Monday and denied the Reds the chance to extending their lead at the top of the Premier League table, but that result came after three successive losses, including a shock 4-2 FA Cup defeat at AFC Wimbledon.

What’s he said?

Merson, in giving his predictions for this weekend’s football, was asked by Sky Sports to pass judgement on West Ham’s weekend clash with Crystal Palace.

A victory over the Eagles could see Manuel Pellegrini’s men move as high as eighth in the table, should other results go their way.

But Merson has predicted a 1-0 defeat for the Irons.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

He told Sky Sports: “You never know what you are going to get from West Ham, this is not a massive game. You watched them against Liverpool on MNF and think, ‘How can this team get beaten and concede four to Wimbledon?’

“You really have to ask some serious questions about what is going on there, they were a completely different team.

“No disrespect to Wimbledon, but you should not be letting in four goals against a side bottom of League One.

“And then you play against a team like Liverpool with their front three and they never really looked like scoring.”

Genuine question

Merson’s question is a salient one.

The Hammers can’t seem to raise their game against those around them in the table and have seriously struggled for consistency.

If they are to rise up the table, they will have to start winning these games, with Palace a dangerous opponent.

Roy Hodgson’s men have not lost in their last three in all competitions – including a win over Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup and a convincing 2-0 win over Fulham.

If West Ham take this game for granted, they will be in for a nasty shock.

Spurs still have a problem with Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur managed to grind out a 2-1 win over Wolves on Sunday but they still have a problem to solve regarding Harry Kane.

On the chalkboard

Spurs needed a late goal to overcome Nuno Espirito Santo’s side at Molineux, with Jan Vertonghen sending an excellent header into the bottom corner after Christian Eriksen’s injury-time corner.

Per WhoScored, Kane turned in a battling, hard-working display.

He completed five dribbles throughout the game and also won five aerial duels while making four clearances.

He had two shots on goal, though only one was on target, but his passing accuracy was again a worry.

He attempted 21 passes and just 12 were accurate, though one was a key pass, notching an accuracy of just 57%. No outfield player on the pitch had a lower pass completion rate.

Kane was also booked after a cynical foul on winger Adama Traore.

Worst trait

Kane has struggled when it comes to his pass completion thus far this season.

Under Mourinho, the England captain has never once managed to notch a pass completion rate higher than 67%, per WhoScored.

Against Manchester United, in a dispiriting 2-1 defeat, he had just 66.7%. Against Bournemouth, it was 65%, Burnley 61.8%, West Ham 60.7% and Wolves 57.1%.

This is becoming an issue and it does not appear that he is improving.

Money talks: How much did Levy pay for each of these Spurs stars?

Only twice has Kane had a lower accuracy – against Arsenal and Crystal Palace under Mauricio Pochettino – and Mourinho isn’t improving the trait.

Kane has actually struggled to score under the Portuguese, netting in just two of his games, and if he can’t pass or hit the back of the net, he is a problem.

It is one that must be solved.

Meanwhile, Spurs legend Ledley King is confident of the club doing one thing.

Leeds’ Marcelo Bielsa may not be at the club next season suggests Danny Mills

Danny Mills has suggested that Leeds are fortunate to have a manager like Marcelo Bielsa but he fears that the Argentine may not be around for much longer.

What did he say?

Bielsa is a hugely respected figure in football and despite all the obstacles of managing in England he has transformed Leeds since arriving in Yorkshire 18 months ago.

Though he was desperately unlucky not to win promotion last year he has stuck by his methods and values and Leeds are now a resurgent force in the Championship, sitting second. With lessons learned the former Chile manager looks well-placed to deliver the Whites back to the top tier.

His latest achievement isn’t going to go unnoticed, however, and given his pedigree in the game there are likely to be a number of suitors lining up to lure him away from Elland Road, and that concerns Mills.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said:

“He is unique, there’s no one else like Bielsa from top to bottom.

“He lives at the training ground, sleeps there, lives at the office. Incredible. It’s incredible what he does and Leeds are lucky to have him.

“My worry is if Leeds don’t get up this season, a big Premier League side will come looking for him or maybe he would have had enough and will want to move on.”

Here to stay?

Mills is right to feel a little concern about Bielsa’s future as two years in a row of coming so close to promotion but ultimately achieving nothing may see his patience run out.

The manner in which he has transformed the club, from the team’s playing style to the promotion of youth players, is really quite something, and there will be no shortage of interest in him.

Now the Argentine has proved himself in England – despite still not speaking the language – means Premier League clubs may be more confident in giving him a job, and that could be difficult to turn down since he has never experienced the English first division.

This is unlikely to please many supporters, however, who have been singing his praises for all too long, including last week when he won the Manager of the Month award.

That being said, even the most die-hard of Leeds fans must realise that a failure to go up this term will see them vulnerable in terms of keeping the Argentine.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has issued an update in regard to a potential new addition that many fans won’t want to hear, as it hinders their promotion chances.

Wolves appointment of James Collins is the final piece of Fosun plans

Wolverhampton Wanderers are gunning for big things under the ownership of Chinese conglomerate Fosun, headed by chairman Jeff Shi they have truly transformed the club over recent years.

First came the Championship title in 2018, then a seventh-place finish in the Premier League in their maiden season back and now a run at the Europa League knockout stage.

And it’s only the start as there are big plans ahead for the club.

These ambitions can now fully get going after the final piece of the puzzle was put in place last week. Wolves confirmed the appointment of James Collins as the new head coach of the U23 squad, replacing Rob Edwards.

He will act as the final step between the club’s youth system and Nuno Santo’s first-team, which is huge for what Fosun want to do at Molineux.

In the future, they see the club producing their own talent from within, and that’s been echoed by the substantial amount of money invested over the summer with over a handful of additions.

Collins holds a UEFA Pro Licence, the highest coaching badge possible, and joins from the hugely-promising academy of Crewe Alexandra.

Upon his arrival, he said: “The academy has taken a long time to get going and be really high-flying, but I think they are on the verge of that now. They have good players, they are investing in it, and I know the board and the chairman are keen on it.”

Now that the academy setup has an U23 manager in place, they can genuinely start transitioning players into first-team prospects, just like Collins has done for years at the League Two outfit.

This move was a vital one as it has only really been Morgan Gibbs-White that has broken into the senior fold under Fosun’s control, and that must change if they are to meet their long-term aim.

Calling all Premier League experts: Who do these unique statistics belong to? Find out below….

The 19-year-old has played 64 times in the old gold, scoring just once, via Transfermarkt.

Collins can be the middle man between Nuno and the youth system, very much like Freddie Ljungberg was at Arsenal before becoming caretaker following Unai Emery’s sacking.

And in other Wolves news, here’s how Nuno Santo’s side could look after nearly £60m worth of investment in January…

Tottenham fans send mixed messages to Paulo Gazzaniga on his birthday

Paulo Gazzaniga has enjoyed a run in the Tottenham first-team since Hugo Lloris picked up a long-term injury against Brighton in October, and on the whole he has performed quite well.

In his 20 games this term he has kept four clean sheets and conceded 27 goals, but considering several Spurs defenders have come under fire this season, including Jan Vertonghen and Serge Aurier, he is fairing quite well.

However, the fact that Lloris will likely come straight back into the side suggests the Argentine hasn’t set the world alight, which is why some supporters have aimed criticism at him even on his birthday.

On the other hand, there are a few messages of support for the 28-year-old, with praise for his displays so far and the several top-quality saves he has made between the posts.

He will be determined to retain his place even when his French teammate returns but he may have to show more to impress Mourinho, as he has just one clean sheet to boast of since the Portuguese boss came in, with poor errors against Manchester United and Chelsea leading to goals being conceded.

As a result, he is still yet to persuade the whole fanbase that he is capable of being the number one ahead of the Frenchman, and therefore he hasn’t made the most of his opportunity.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

Some supporters are even keen for the club to part ways with the keeper, and that suggests he hasn’t met the standards required of a Tottenham player since coming in, which does seem a little harsh.

Meanwhile, fans have been reacting to more bad injury news as Harry Kane was witnessed leaving St. Mary’s on crutches after the defeat to Southampton.

Leeds fans in awe of Alfie McCalmont after U23s showing

Leeds United’s U23 side put on a great performance on Sunday as they beat Hull’s youth outfit 5-0.

Carlos Corberan’s side have had huge success in recent times under the Spaniard’s tutelage as they won the PDL National title last term, and a number of youngsters have broken through to the first team in recent times.

The likes of Jack Clarke, Jamie Shackleton and Jordan Stevens have all come through to make their league debuts over the past 18 months, and it seems as if there’s another talent emerging.

Alfie McCalmont was in good form against the Tigers, and his performance was capped off by a brilliant goal to make it 5-0.

Understandably, some fans were in awe of McCalmont after this showing and they took to Twitter to wax lyrical about the youngster.

Another section of the fanbase were even more impressed by the teenager as they were calling for him to get a chance in the first team sooner rather than later.

Of course, seeing a midfield talent develop in the academy has led to comparisons with players already starring in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.

A number of supporters were quick to draw comparisons with Kalvin Phillips as one fan even called him the long term replacement for the man known as the Yorkshire Pirlo.

In other news, Marcelo Bielsa’s recent revelation may mean that Leeds may have a way around FFP.
