Nations League: Expert Predictions – England vs Croatia

[ad_pod ]

England’s final Nations League group clash of the campaign serves as a perfect advertisement for UEFA’s new tournament, with reaching the final four, finishing second and relegation all still possibilities for Gareth Southgate’s side. That will be determined by how they fare at Wembley on Sunday against Croatia – who the Three Lions held to a stalemate in Rijeka the last time both countries met.

So will the reverse clash in London end any differently? This week’s experts, Football FanCast’s England-loving duo Will Jones and Greg Potts, share their thoughts and predictions ahead of the all-or-nothing Nations League clash.

Of course, the Croatia clash hasn’t been England’s only game during this international break. The Three Lions warmed up by beating USA 3-0 on Thursday night, a game that will mostly be remembered for Wayne Rooney’s ceremonial cameo. But it was a strong performance from what was essentially Southgate’s second string side, featuring a number of players that have only really been on the peripheries of previous squads, and that may well give him a few key decisions to make for Sunday’s showdown at Wembley.

Did anybody earn themselves a start on Sunday?

Will: “Dele Alli provided England with a more aggressive, dynamic option in the middle of pitch. Southgate won’t want to be without the Spurs man’s drive from the start on Sunday and the fact that he withdrew him on the hour mark against the USA suggests he’s aware of that. Elsewhere, Jadon Sancho demonstrated with his busy, confident display that he could have a telling impact from the bench if and when he is called upon.”

Greg: “For me, both full-backs played their way into contention to start in Sunday’s game against Croatia. Ben Chilwell was impressive on the left but it was Liverpool youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold who really shone against the Americans. The 20-year-old has had a bit of a tough start to the season with the Reds but he scored his first ever international goal on Thursday and put in a man of the match performance that deserves to be rewarded with another start ahead of Kyle Walker.”

The USA game saw Southgate continue with his 4-3-3 setup, which he first returned to competitively the last time he faced Croatia after Sunday’s opponents exposed the weaknesses of England’s 3-1-4-2 system during the World Cup semi-final. It went on to inspire the 3-2 win over Spain but the clash in Rijeka ended up a scoreless stalemate, largely because Croatia use the same 4-3-3 formation as well and have a squad of relatively similar ability.

Is 4-3-3 now a better fit for England than 3-1-4-2, or should the Three Lions return to the old game-plan?

Greg: “Southgate’s 3-1-4-2 certainly worked against the smaller teams in the World Cup, but in the two games against Belgium and the semi-final against Croatia we didn’t seem to understand the system well enough when coming up against top quality players. I hope then that the England boss sticks with the 4-3-3 that worked so well against Spain in the last international break, with three at the back saved for when we need a plan B.”

Will: “Southgate is unlikely to revert back to his Word Cup system, so four at the back is here to stay, which is generally a good thing. Though, with Kyle Walker, Joe Gomez and Thursday night’s man of the match Trent Alexander-Arnold all vying for a place on the right-hand side of that back line, the England boss has some decisions to make.”

Croatia may have got the better of England during the World Cup, but the last encounter showed how little to choose there is between these sides in overall quality. Croatia, though, do boast three standout talents that England fans will no doubt already be aware of – winger-forward Ivan Perisic, and midfield duo Ivan Rakitic and Luka Modric. The latter was the player of the tournament at the World Cup, owing in part to how he completely controlled the game in England’s semi-final defeat.

Aside from Perisic, Rakitic and Modric, which talents in this Croatia team should be England most wary of?

Will: “Whilst he struggled to show it in his time with Leicester City, Andrej Kramaric is a player with the capacity to hurt England. The attacker has been in fine form for Hoffenheim so far this season and scored a fine goal in Croatia’s impressive triumph over Spain last time out.”

Greg: “After their 3-2 win over Spain on Thursday, it would seem that England need to be wary of Croatia’s young defender Tin Jedvaj. Against Spain the 22-year-old popped up with late runs into the box that allowed him two simple finishes to win the game for the home side. Whether he gets a start at Wembley it remains to be seen, but if he does England’s wingers will have to be alert and ready to track back for the full 90 minutes.”

If the last instalment is anything to go by, not to mention the fact both sides could still make the final four or suffer relegation, Sunday’s meeting at Wembley looks set to be an incredibly close encounter – one that could be decided by one key battle or single factor.

Where will this game be lost and won?

Greg: “The key battle will undoubtedly be in the centre of the park. We know how good the Croatian midfield is and Modric and Rakitic will dominate the game if they are given the time and space. A positive for Southgate on Thursday though was the form and work-rate of Alli, who constantly hassled the USA midfield and forced them into mistakes. The Tottenham man will have to replicate this on Sunday and be backed up by whoever else starts in that central midfield role. For what it’s worth, I’d pick Ross Barkley and Jordan Henderson alongside Alli to provide the legs that the Three Lions will desperately need.”

Will: “England have to make their superior quality on the flanks count. Southgate’s side are unlikely to be able to dominate the midfield battle with the likes of Modric and Rakitic operating in there. However, the Three Lions can punish the visitors on the wings. If the likes of Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Jadon Sancho are at their best then Croatia will struggle to cope.”

And finally chaps, let’s hear your score predictions…

Will: “2-1 England. Both teams need to win here and have the capacity to score goals, but with an optimistic Wembley crowd behind them and the prospect of the next round of the Nations League on the horizon, the home side should have just about enough to prevail.”

Greg: “I can’t say I’ve been too fussed about the Nations League so far, but being relegated clearly wouldn’t be ideal and would mean the opposition in the next group stage would be far less interesting. So, I’m banking on a 2-1 England win with Alli and Harry Kane getting the goals.”

West Ham simply must seek to lure Borja Iglesias to the London Stadium in January

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini could be facing a striker exodus when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Chilean has made a steady start to life as Hammers boss and has managed to bring the best out of Marko Arnautovic in the attack. The Austrian has been in fine form in the Premier League, thus leading to reports that he could be set to leave in January. The forward reportedly wanted £200,000-per-week to stay at the London Stadium, a figure West Ham simply aren’t willing to meet. Arnautovic since denied the rumours on Instagram, but turning down the likes of Manchester United could prove difficult.

Mexico international Javier Hernandez is also facing an uncertain future at the club after slipping down the pecking order following Pellegrini’s appointment, and with Lucas Perez and Andy Carroll proving to be unreliable, the former Manchester City boss may be forced to sign a striker in the January window.

And the perfect signing would be Espanyol hitman Borja Iglesias.

Valued at £18 million by Transfermarkt, the forward was signed from Celta Vigo in the summer to replace Gerard Moreno who rejoined Villarreal after hitting 16 league goals. Iglesias spent last season on loan with Segunda side Real Zaragoza, where he netted 22 goals in the league to thus earn his transfer to Espanyol.

It seems his new employers have got the better end of the deal with Moreno scoring just twice for his old club since the move. On the other hand, Iglesias has made a stunning start, netting seven goals and registering two assists in his first 11 appearances – clearly, West Ham must offer him the chance to further his career in the Premier League.

Iglesias is an excellent finisher, able to score any chance that presents itself. The forward would thrive in Pellegrini’s system and works well as a lone striker. The Spaniard holds the ball up brilliantly and helps bring others into the game, averaging 1.5 key passes per game this season (as perWhoScored).

Thus, it’s plainly clear that Pellegrini should look no further for his new forward than the 25-year-old.

Morgan Schneiderlin simply has to leave Everton in January

According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Everton are eyeing up a move for midfielder Tanguy N’Dombele. The 21-year-old currently plays his football at French giants Lyon and has done so since moving there on loan back in the summer of 2017, with his impressive displays for the Ligue 1 outfit seemingly attracting interest around the continent.

And that’s because reports suggest that Everton manager Marco Silva is interested in a move for the France international, mainly as a result of his uncertainty surrounding the capabilities of Morgan Schneiderlin, with the Toffees boss reportedly unconvinced by the midfielder.

And with the Frenchman struggling for regular football at Goodison Park, time appears to be up on his Everton career, which is why he absolutely has to seek a move away in the New Year.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, it was former boss Ronald Koeman who brought the 29-year-old to the blue half of Merseyside back in January 2017, what with the midfielder struggling to produce the goods at Manchester United in his time there between 2015 and 2017.

In fact, the Toffees splashed out £20.61 million (as per Transfermarkt) on the ex-Southampton man in a bid to solve their midfield woes, and early indications suggested that he may do just that with several impressive displays in the second half of the 2016/17 season.

However, just when it looked like the France international was getting back to the form that earned him a big money move to United back in 2015, he struggled to replicate that under Koeman last time round as, although he eventually finished the season with 30 Premier League appearances to his name, he really didn’t excel in the heart of the Toffees midfield.

And that was evidenced even more during the summer following the arrival of new boss Silva, what with the Portuguese bringing Barcelona man Andre Gomes to Goodison Park to strengthen his midfield options – that was the clearest indication that Schneiderlin simply wasn’t up to the job.

And while the 41-year-old did give the Frenchman a chance to impress at the start of the season, he simply didn’t do enough alongside Idrissa Gueye to convince of his capabilities, hence he hasn’t appeared in any of their last five Premier League matchday squads.

And with Silva reportedly keen on another central midfielder in 21-year-old N’Dombele, 29-year-old Schneiderlin is clearly not the man the Portuguese wants in the centre of his midfield – time is surely up on his Everton career.

Thus, having spent so much on a player Koeman thought would help end their midfield issues, Schneiderlin will likely go down as a shocking signing from the Dutchman (albeit he certainly isn’t the only one to fall into that category) as, but for a few decent displays here and there, he simply hasn’t lived up to expectation, or indeed his price-tag.

Either way, the Frenchman really does need to leave Goodison Park for the sake of his career come the New Year.

Arsenal fans react in amazement as Mike Dean awards them a penalty in the north London derby

[ad_pod ]Arsenal fans have reacted in disbelief after Mike Dean, so often accused of having a soft spot for Tottenham, awarded their side a penalty in the north London derby. The Gunners were gifted the opportunity to open the scoring at the Emirates after Jan Vertonghen foolishly swatted a cross into the box away with his hand, prompting Dean to point to the penalty spot.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang coolly converted from 12 yards to rise to the top of the Premier League scoring ranks, making him a good option to use your bet365 sign up bonus for the golden boot on, but Gunners’ fans were more in awe of the referee’s decision rather than the Gabonese international’s proficiency in front of goal.Dean has often been seen running off waving his arm in the air when Spurs score in games that he has officiated in the past. Of course, he is believed to be overemphasising the successful advantage he played in the build up to the goal, however, it is become a source of fun for most fans.Let’s take a look at some of the best tweets…

Everton fans react as Silva eyes £36m Augustin deal

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Everton fans have been reacting to a transfer report from France, as the Toffees are reportedly eyeing a mega deal for Red Bull Leipzig youngster Jean-Kevin Augustin.

According to France Football (via GFFN), Everton are all set to launch a formal bid for Augustin.

RB Leipzig of course spent most of the summer trying to sign Everton youngster Ademola Lookman, and the report claims the Toffees will turn the tables with a €40m (about £36m) offer for 21 year-old Augustin.

The young Frenchman plays mostly as a centre forward, but can also play on the wings due to his pace and trickery.

He has scored 20 times in 59 appearances for Leipzig while also adding eight assists, and he has five goals in nine appearances for the French Under-21 side.

The versatile young talent has been subject to controversy recently over his refusal to take part in a French Under-21 match because he was “tired”, only to appear in a club friendly during that same international break.

Tottenham fans lavish praise on Dele Alli

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur booked their spot in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup with a 2-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.

Son Heung-min scored Tottenham’s first in the 20th minute, before Dele Alli doubled the away side’s advantage just before the hour mark.

It was a wonderful goal from Alli as well, with the England international collecting a super pass from Harry Kane before lifting a delicious chip over Gunners stopper Petr Cech.

The goal was Alli’s fourth of the season, and his second in the EFL Cup.

The attacker was involved in an unsavoury incident though when he was hit on the head by a plastic bottle thrown from the crowd during the clash at the Emirates.

The 22-year-old was near the touchline when he was struck, and reacted with a 2-0 gesture to the home supporters.

Alli’s performance on the night was extremely impressive, and the Tottenham fans were keen to pay tribute to the former MK Dons youngster after the match.

Manchester City fans are not happy with the news of Fernandinho’s injury problem

Manchester City fans have taken to Twitter to react in frustration after it was revealed that key man Fernandinho may miss Sunday’s match against Southampton, and could also be a doubt for the crunch clash against Liverpool as he looks to build up his match fitness.

The 33-year-old is a vital cog in Pep Guardiola’s machine, and makes the champions tick. It is telling that they have lost to both Crystal Palace and Leicester within the space of a week without their Brazilian destroyer in the side, and if he doesn’t return quickly, the title race could be over in January as the gap starts to widen.

It is no secret that Guardiola is desperate to sign a replacement for the ageing defensive midfielder, not because he doesn’t rate him, but because Fernandinho’s fitness is becoming more problematic as he gets older.

The situation is also quite embarrassing for the former Barcelona boss, as the manager of City’s title rivals Liverpool – Jurgen Klopp – ensured that his side wouldn’t endure a crisis like this by signing the likes of Naby Keita and Fabinho back in the summer, as well as addressing another problem area with the £66m signing of Alisson in goal.

Let’s see how City fans reacted to the terrible news that could put their title defence in danger…

HYS: Should Newcastle swap Jonjo Shelvey for Tom Cairney?

According to The Sun, Fulham are keen on swapping captain Tom Cairney for Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey as the Scotsman has fallen out of favour under Claudio Ranieri, who feels that a holding midfielder must be brought in as soon as possible.

Magpies boss Rafa Benitez is a long term admirer of Cairney’s and the Tyneside outfit have lodged bids for the midfielder before, while Shelvey has made just nine appearances this season – former Leicester boss Ranieri wants to bring Shelvey to Craven Cottage in order to add some steel to a soft midfield and give the Englishman a fresh start.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are in desperate need of a creative midfielder and have hit a pretty big stumbling block in their pursuit of Miguel Almiron with Atlanta demanding in excess of £30m for the Paraguayan – a fee Mike Ashley surely won’t provide – Cairney could prove to be a smart signing if he can provide some invention for the likes of Salomon Rondon, but it can’t come at the expense of Shelvey.

Benitez will surely be fuming if Newcastle director Lee Charnley pulls the trigger on this crazy switch – it could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for the Spaniard and he may finally leave.

What do you think, Newcastle fans? Should the club swap Jonjo Shelvey for Tom Cairney? Let us know by voting in the poll below…

HYS: Should West Brom sign out-of-favour Crystal Palace striker Alexander Sorloth?

West Brom are enjoying a tremendous season in the Championship under Darren Moore following their relegation from the Premier League last season. They are just five points off the league leaders Leeds, and could mount a serious push for promotion in the second half of the season if they bring in some added firepower this month.

The Baggies have done alright for goalscorers so far in this campaign. Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez are both on 13 league goals for the season, whilst Leicester loanee Harvey Barnes has found the back of the net on nine occasions.

However, all three of them are regular starters for the Midlands side, so perhaps a new face who can come off the bench in games that aren’t going their way should be on their January wishlist.

One man who is seemingly available for transfer is Crystal Palace striker Alexander Sorloth, who hasn’t made a single Premier League start for the Eagles this season. The 23-year-old has scored just one goal since signing for the club last January, and looks surplus to requirements.
