WBBL draft: Ecclestone moves to Strikers after Sixers pick Dunkley

England batter Tammy Beaumont will return to Strikers for the first time in seven years

Sydney Sixers produced a shock in the WBBL overseas draft by taking England batter Sophia Dunkley with the No.1 pick which left long-time Sixers overseas Sophie Ecclestone available for Adelaide Strikers at pick No.2.There was a lot of uncertainty heading into the WBBL draft after Melbourne Renegades lost star pre-signing Hayley Matthews to a shoulder injury while Hobart Hurricanes announced they had pre-signed star England allrounder Nat Sciver-Brunt on draft day.A number of clubs were chasing top-order batting talent in the draft including Sixers who had the number one pick. Ecclestone, the world’s No.1 T20 bowler, had previously played two seasons with Sixers including last season. But Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes said the need for a top-order batter forced their hand with the first pick.”Sophie Ecclestone has been an incredible player,” Haynes told ESPNCricinfo. “It was really tough to let her go through the draft. But I think the last couple of seasons, our reflection as a club has been that our batting has been short, and the numbers certainly show that.”We definitely looked locally to try and address that. But the next option is at the draft, and so really excited we’re able to secure Sophia Dunkley.”A lot of clubs were unsure of what each would do in the opening round and Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers attempted to flush out some retention picks in the opening round.Related

Stars tried to get India batter Jemimah Rodrigues with pick No.3 but Heat used their retention pick. They then tried to get England batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge but Hurricanes retained her.Stars finally landed in-form England wicketkeeper bat Amy Jones. Perth Scorchers had the right to retain but opted not to. Scorchers tried to poach Heather Knight and Deandra Dottin but Sydney Thunder and Renegades both used their retention picks immediately.Scorchers then used the final pick in the opening round on pre-signing Sophie Devine to lock her in at the platinum price. Most of the second round featured pre-signed players but Scorchers made a slight surprise in picking fringe England batter Paige Scholfield in the second round at the gold price. Scorchers also picked up South Africa allrounder Chloe Tryon, who will play for her fourth WBBL club after previously playing for Hurricanes, Sixers and Thunder.Thunder were thrilled to get South Africa quick Shabnim Ismail in the final round to walk away with arguably the strongest overseas trios, having claimed Knight as a retention and pre-signed Chamari Athapaththu.England batter Tammy Beaumont will return to Strikers for the first time in seven years having played 27 matches for them between 2016 and 2018. She has since played for Renegades and Thunder.Renegades were the only club not to take three players in the draft. The injury to pre-signing Matthews allows them to make another signing at a later date although they can only recruit a player who had nominated for the draft but was not selected.”We were at a distinct disadvantage,” Renegades coach Simon Helmot said. “We were the only team not to have a pre-signed player. But the allowance then was we only need to pick two today, and I suppose we can stop and have a look at what’s going on in the world of cricket over the next couple of months. I don’t believe there’s a rush in this decision. So we can look at what happens in the Hundred, look at what happens in the in the CPL, even look what happens in the World Cup, and see which players are in form, and also maybe what our needs are.”Adelaide Strikers: Sophie Ecclestone, Laura Wolvaardt, Tammy Beaumont
Brisbane Heat: Jemimah Rodrigues, Chinelle Henry, Nadine de Klerk
Hobart Hurricanes: Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Linsey Smith
Melbourne Renegades: Deandra Dottin, Alice Capsey
Melbourne Stars: Amy Jones, Marizanne Kapp, Dani Gibson
Perth Scorchers: Sophie Devine, Paige Schofield, Chloe Tryon
Sydney Sixers: Sophia Dunkley, Amelia Kerr, Maddy Villiers
Sydney Thunder: Heather Knight, Chamari Athapaththu, Shabnim Ismail

The Greatest 20 Strikers in Football History

The most valuable player on a pitch is a striker, and nowadays, being a world-class centre-forward is more than just scoring goals.

Starting the press without the ball and linking up play are also two important attributes, but more often than not, a striker is judged by their goal to game ratio.

Currently, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane are viewed as some of the best strikers in world football.

20 Hristo Stoichkov

An all-rounded forward and the greatest Bulgarian player in history, Hristo Stoichkov kicks off the countdown.

The powerful left-footed striker was famously signed by Johan Cruyff at Barcelona when he was at the top of his game and made the Catalan giants even better.

Stoichkov won five La Liga titles at the Nou Camp and collected the Ballon d’Or in 1994 after picking up the 1994 World Cup Golden Boot.

19 Kenny Dalglish

Arguably Liverpool’s greatest ever player, Kenny Dalglish wasn’t just a goalscorer and could run games of a football as a centre-forward.

‘King Kenny’ starred in the 1970s and 1980s, scoring more than 200 goals and winning 24 trophies during an iconic career.

18 Gabriel Batistuta

Argentine powerhouse Gabriel Batistuta was a goalscoring machine in the 1990s for Fiorentina, outscoring every other Serie A player in that decade.

Named by Pele in the FIFA 100 list in 2004, Batistuta was known for his aerial ability and physical presence, but when he had the ball at his feet, he was an excellent dribbler and clinical in front of goal and had an unbelievable World Cup record.

17 Harry Kane

Harry Kane is one of the most clinical strikers around, and he’s been finding the back of the net on a regular basis for Tottenham, Bayern Munich and England since 2014.

In fact, Kane has scored 17 or more league goals in 12 successive seasons, and his goalscoring record is remarkable. Now England’s all-time top scorer, Kane may not have the trophies to match his individual brilliance, but he is more than just a goalscorer with an incredible passing range.

16 Karim Benzema

One of the most underrated strikers in recent times, Karim Benzema often hasn’t got the plaudits he’s deserved after starring at Real Madrid for 14 years.

Finally lifting the Ballon d’Or in 2022, Benzema has won 33 honours during his career and scored more than 350 goals during his time at the Bernabeu.

Whether it be in the air or with the ball at his feet, the Frenchman was a nuisance for centre-backs and was often overshadowed by a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.

15 Jimmy Greaves

Part of the England side that won the 1966 World Cup, Jimmy Greaves was nominated for the Ballon d’Or on six occasions in the 1960s and starred for Chelsea and Tottenham during his career.

A Spurs legend with two FA Cup triumphs, Greaves also won Serie A with AC Milan. He finished his career as the highest scorer in England’s first tier of football with 357 goals, highlighting how much of a prolific goalscorer he was.

14 Alan Shearer

The Premier League has been regarded as the best league in the world over time, so Alan Shearer, the divisions all-time top scorer, had to be in the list.

The Englishman netted 260 times in the English top flight for Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, winning the title once.

Long range strikes, in the air or from the spot, Shearer could score any type of goal and came third in the 1996 Ballon d’Or.

13 Luis Suarez

Despite plenty of controversies during his career, Luis Suarez’s footballing ability at his peak for Ajax, Liverpool and Barcelona was incredible.

The Uruguayan has scored goals on a consistent basis for 20 years now and was named the IFFHS World’s Best Goalscorer in 2010, 2014 and 2016.

Suarez has proven he can score all across the world and his 2013/2014 season with Liverpool is arguably one of the best individual seasons the Premier League has ever seen.

12 Wayne Rooney

One of four English strikers on the list, Wayne Rooney is Man Utd’s all-time leading goalscorer and had every attribute an iconic centre-forward required. From physicality to pace and world-class technical ability, Rooney scored 253 times for the Red Devils and netted 53 times for England.

Dropping deeper in midfield throughout his career, Rooney was unstoppable in his prime as a striker, winning 16 major honours.

11 Josef Bican

Josef Bican represented both Austria and Czechoslovakia on the international stage and was one of the most prolific forwards during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.

Capable with finishing with ease with either foot, Bican scored more than 800 goals during his career despite making just over 600 appearances.

A ridiculous goal to game ratio, Bican has rightly gone down as a Slavia Prague legend.

Lesão do Dudu

Elenco curto

Priorizar a Libertadores

Vincent and Tsiga have played Tests for Zimbabwe, while 19-year-old Nyamhuri has played three Tests and four ODIs.The triseries is scheduled to take place at the Harare Sports Club from July 14 to 26. Pant suffers foot fracture, set to miss remainder of series

He has been ruled out of keeping wicket in the ongoing Test match, and will bat only if required

Rishabh Pant is set to miss the remainder of the Test series against England with the right-foot injury he suffered on the opening day of the fourth Test now confirmed to be a fracture. The BCCI said that Pant will not keep wicket in the rest of the Test and will bat “as per team requirements”.* Dhruv Jurel will keep wicket for India for the rest of the Test. The fracture is understood to be of the metatarsal bone in the right foot. The initial diagnosis is that Pant would need six-to-eight weeks’ rest. Clips captured by fans outside the India team hotel in Manchester showed Pant’s right foot in a moonboot. The injury took place during the second session of play when Pant tried to reverse-sweep a delivery from Chris Woakes, which he ended up inside-edging onto his foot. He was in visible pain, and the affected spot swelled up immediately. Pant had to retire hurt – he was on 37 at the time – and went off the ground on a golf buggy. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Pant underwent scans soon after, which revealed the fracture.Related

The bravery and the outrageousness of Rishabh Pant

The England players, having missed the edge, went up in appeal for lbw, even as Pant reacted to the pain. He survived the lbw shout and the subsequent review, but the swelling and his inability to put any weight on the foot were visible.Pant, India’s wicketkeeper and vice-captain, was taken to the medical facility at the ground first, and captain Shubman Gill went to enquire about his well-being there. Pant was taken to a hospital after that.Liam Dawson, the England spinner, said at the end of the day’s play that he “can’t see him [Pant] playing much more part in this game”. B Sai Sudharsan, who was the non-striker at the time, said later, “Oh, he was in a lot of pain definitely.”This is the second injury he has sustained in as many Test matches, following a blow on his left index finger while keeping in England’s first innings at Lord’s. Jurel had substituted as India’s wicketkeeper for the rest of that Test as well.Pant’s innings of 37 off 48 balls was largely restrained but featured several characteristically outrageous shots, including a slog sweep for four off Jofra Archer, followed by an unsuccessful reverse sweep off the next ball.BCCI are yet to officially confirm Pant’s fracture and name a replacement for Pant for the fifth Test. During the two unofficial Tests between England Lions and India A, which preceded the England series, Ishan Kishan was the second wicketkeeper behind Jurel.*GMT 1100 Updated after the BCCI statement

Not just Beto: Moyes must drop 5/10 Everton star who made just 17 passes

Everton were the latest victims of Erling Haaland’s goalscoring wrath when the Toffees travelled to Manchester City on Saturday.

Premier League action is back after the international break, which means the Nordic monster that is Haaland is also back to terrifying top-flight defences, with the lethal 25-year-old finishing off another fine day at the office with a brace against David Moyes’ men.

While the Citizens continue to love life, knowing they have the robotic finishing ability of the Norwegian to hand, Everton continue to feel frustrated by their own striker options.

Beto – once again – fired blanks from minimal opportunities at the Etihad, with Moyes surely at the end of his tether when it comes to his goal-shy number nine.

Beto's poor performances

Before Haaland inevitably broke the deadlock, Everton had several chances of their own to cause an upset on the road.

Wth just 14 minutes on the clock, Beto had a glorious chance to gift Moyes and Co the lead, with Iliman Ndiaye’s quick feet initially getting the better of the City defence, before the Portuguese attacker then couldn’t get a meaningful connection on the ex-Sheffield United winger’s inviting delivery into the box.

That horrible miss by the former Udinese man is the tale of a season that’s worryingly unravelling for the 27-year-old, who has bounced back from similar barren patches of form before.

Indeed, the 6-foot-4 centre-forward would fire home an electric five strikes across Moyes’ first seven games back in the Merseyside hot-seat, after only managing a weak seven goals across 50 games under Sean Dyche.

Now, though, he is right back in the mire, with his last Premier League goal falling all the way back in August in a 3-2 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Pundit Pat Nevin, after the City loss, even stated that Beto’s no-show would no doubt “infuriate” Toffees supporters watching on, with Everton-based writer Ell Bretland going as far as to also openly state that the number nine’s wastefulness is beginning to have a “really negative effect” way before the 2-0 defeat.

Moyes will have been left with a lot to ponder about his upcoming team selections; therefore, with Beto not the only noticeable underperformer who might be axed for Everton’s next match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Alongside Beto: Another Everton star must be dropped

The former West Ham United boss would have been cursing Jack Grealish’s ineligibility for this tie at the Etihad, with the skilful attacker not allowed to line up against his parent employers.

In his place, the Glaswegian would throw Carlos Alcaraz out to the left channel, and based on his lacklustre afternoon, he is unlikely to be retained in this position moving forward.

In the Argentine’s defence, it’s clear from the table above that he excels more from a central spot in the Everton XI, with four of his six overall goal contributions to date in Merseyside coming from a number ten role. For Southampton as well, Alcaraz only ever made one outright appearance down the left flank.

Moyes’ decision to shoehorn the South American into this spot didn’t work whatsoever, with the forgettable number 24 only managing one tame effort at Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal from his poor 70 minutes on the pitch.

Moreover, he only amassed a meagre 26 touches with zero dribbles attempted, with Jordan Pickford in between the sticks for the away side, even managing to reach 43 touches come the full-time whistle.

When Spurs do come to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, it looks very unlikely that Alcaraz will remain on the left wing, with his tally of no goals and assists over the entire season to date also making it look rather slim that he will usurp the likes of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in his more familiar number ten position.

Liverpool Echo journalist Chris Beesley dished out a low 5/10 rating to Alcaraz subsequently, with the reporter stating that the ex-Saints man is “far less effective” when moved out to the wing.

Moyes will, hopefully, have learnt his lesson in this regard, with the Scotsman also perhaps ready to ditch Beto as a refreshed Toffees attack potentially takes to the field against Thomas Frank’s challengers.
