Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has delivered disappointing injury news in his latest press conference as Spurs prepare for their clash against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.

The Lowdown: Spurs’ current injuries

The Lilywhites boss has not had the luxury of picking a starting XI from a fully fit squad in recent weeks, with a number of injuries limiting his options.

Defensive midfielder Oliver Skipp has been absent for the previous six games due to a groin strain, while Japhet Tanganga has suffered a knee injury which has kept him out for the same period of time.

January arrival Rodrigo Bentacur has also been out injured, having missed Spurs’ emphatic 4-0 victory over Leeds United. This was also the case for Lucas Moura, who was absent due to an unknown injury.

The Latest: Conte’s injury update

In his latest press conference, Conte provided an injury update ahead of Tottenham’s FA Cup clash against Middlesbrough, ruling all four aforementioned players out of contention.

As quoted by football.london when asked about team news for the trip to Teesside, he stated: “Same squad as we have to face Leeds. No Skipp, Tanganga, Moura or Bentancur.”

The Verdict: Time for rotation?

Given the number of injuries with which he has to contend, Conte may be forced into starting a similar XI as to what he did at the weekend against Leeds. If he is eager to give a breather to some key players, he could seek to utilise some of Tottenham’s under-23 squad, including the highly-rated Harvey White and Dane Scarlett.

However, Middlesbrough are renowned to be a physical side. Currently sitting eighth in the Championship, Conte may have himself a dilemma thrust upon him. Does he play the kids and rotate the regulars, or does he field his strongest team possible to maximise Spurs’ chances of advancing to the quarter-finals?

Mark Guidi has dropped a teasing injury update on Celtic centre-forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments made to Go Radio (via Vital Celtic), the journalist revealed that the centre-forward – who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since December 26 – could finally be in line for a return to first-team action after the upcoming international break.

Speaking about the current condition of the Japan international, Guidi said: “On Kyogo, well, there are one or two murmurs that he’ll be available for the first game after the international break, which is Ibrox on April 3rd.

“Now, we could see Kyogo coming on for the League Cup Final against Hibs, the impact he made with not a lot of training time behind him.

“So if it was to be the case, if that’s accurate and he’s available for the game at Ibrox, I wouldn’t imagine that he would start unless there’s an injury problem to Maeda or Giakoumakis or whatever.

“But, certainly, having somebody like Kyogo on the bench, what a lift that would give to Celtic – to the manager, to the players, to the supporters, albeit there won’t be Celtic supporters in the ground that day.

“And, if he’s required for whatever reason, to come on and give 25 minutes to half an hour, he would have that in his locker all day to go and do that.”

Postecoglou will be buzzing

Considering just how important a part of the Celtic side Kyogo has become since his £4.6m move to Parkhead last summer, should the striker indeed be in line for a return to action at Ibrox at the start of next month, it would undoubtedly be an outcome that will have Postecoglou buzzing.

Indeed, over his 14 Premiership appearances so far this season, the £4.95m-rated hitman has been in deadly goalscoring form, scoring eight goals, registering two assists and creating four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.1 shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

Scott Arfield is ‘nailed-on’ to return to the Rangers team for their Europa League clash with Red Star Belgrade at the expense of Fashion Sakala. 

That’s according to the former Gers defender Alan Hutton, who was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Rangers are due to face reigning Serbian champions Red Star in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst selected Sakala in the right-wing position for Saturday’s win over Aberdeen, with Arfield then replacing him for the final 31 minutes.

The Dutchman did say, however, that he benched the Canadian initially in order to give him something of a rest.

The latest

Hutton fully expects Van Bronckhorst to favour one of his ‘main men’ in Arfield over Sakala given the latter’s lack of end product.

“I think Arfield comes back in for Sakala, I think that would be nailed on,” the BBC Radio 5 Live man said to FI.

“Sakala for me, I’m watching him and you just want him to relax on the ball. Everything he tries to do, he tries to just smash the ball.

“He gets into really good areas, he picks up the ball well, he runs at people. Just that final pass, that final decision can sometimes let him down.

“Arfield, he’s one of the main men for me and Van Bronckhorst, especially on European nights.”

The verdict

Arfield only actually started one of Rangers’ six group-stage games – the 1-1 draw with Brondby back in November.

But he earned a spot in Van Bronckhorst’s line-up for both legs of the play-off clash with Borussia Dortmund.

The Verdict: Should not have stood

Given that Zaha then collected the ball again on the wing shortly after the handball, before firing in his cross for Mateta to score, VAR should have intervened and ultimately the goal should not have stood.

Patrick Vieira’s men were already 1-0 up at that point, but given Everton’s bright start, they could easily have got back into the game had VAR intervened and the goal not stood.

Liverpool are more likely to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham than Manchester City this summer, according to Bundesliga journalist Sebastien Kolsberger.

The 18-year-old has emerged as one of the most prodigious players in the world, excelling for Dortmund and also winning 12 caps for England already, with Jordan Henderson drooling over his ability during the most recent international break.

The Verdict: Perfect summer signing

In many ways, Bellingham should be the absolute number one transfer target for Liverpool this summer, should Dortmund make him available. He ticks every box when it comes to potentially excelling in this Reds side.

At 18, he has the world at his feet and would come in as a long-term acquisition and he is already good enough to play week in, week out, scoring three times and registering seven assists in the Bundesliga this season.

Midfield is also the key area that Liverpool could do with adding to in the summer and Bellingham’s ability to play as either a deep-lying player or more of a No.8 would enhance Klopp’s options, especially as some of his current crop are now in their 30s.

With Spurs 11th in the Premier League, one win from their past seven matches, Thomas Frank is feeling the pressure, and failure to see an uptick in form over the coming weeks will send the Danish coach’s fragile tenure in a spin.

But Tottenham have an eye for an up-and-coming talent, and they’ve found a target who might become one of the very best in the business in a few years.

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham have joined a long list of clubs in registering their interest in Leicester City starlet Jeremy Monga. The 16-year-old has already established himself in the Championship club’s first team.

While Chelsea, Liverpool and the Manchester giants are all namechecked, it is Tottenham who are singled out as pushing ‘very strongly’ for the left winger’s signature. One year ago, PSG came sniffing around and were informed that Monga, 15 at the time, would cost £15m. That figure is sure to have since ballooned.

Why Jeremy Monga could be the new Dele

Monga is very young, but he has already made his Premier League debut, becoming the second-youngest player in the top flight when entering the fray for soon-to-be relegated Leicester against Newcastle United in April.

Leicester were doomed, but the fact that he featured seven times until the end of the campaign makes a firm comment on his potential, with the physicality and speed to succeed at the highest level.

And yet he’s still so young. Monga is way ahead of schedule, settling into a big role at the King Power Stadium this term. In this, he could emulate Spurs’s former starboy.

Monga’s ability to carry the ball forward apace has already handed him plenty of plaudits. He has been described by journalist Graeme Bailey as being “a generational talent”, having made more senior appearances than the likes of Premier League starboys Max Dowman and Rio Ngumoha.

He has only scored once in the second tier this term, but what a goal it was. That’s a teenager with jaw-dropping technical quality. That’s a player who, should he join Tottenham, would fall into the category of Dele-esque.

Dele scored 16 goals across 39 League One fixtures in 2014/15, his final year in the EFL before being plucked up to the big time by Daniel Levy and Tottenham.

The 37-cap England international’s personal problems are deeply saddening, but there’s no question that he was one of the best young talents in the world back in his heyday, with Pochettino even saying in 2017 that he’s “the best young player” in Europe.

More of a central attacking midfielder than Monga, the parallels are still there, with the Foxes starlet boasting all he needs to emulate his older countryman and make an age-belying impact at Spurs.

When Liverpool kicked off against Bournemouth in August, the Premier League cowered against Arne Slot’s title-winning side, who had so confidently won the previous edition and then made sweeping summer additions.

But many things, for different reasons, have gone wrong for the Anfield side. Several superstar signings, such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, have yet to hit their stride and prove to the Reds that they are worth the sum total of £241m.

Recent wins over Inter Milan and Brighton & Hove Albion, clean sheets in both, have provided a good foundation for the Merseyside club to build on going forward.

However, Liverpool can only go so far given the tactical imbalances in Slot’s squad. Much has been made of the lack of defensive depth, but the failure to directly replace Luis Diaz is proving a leech on the side of Slot’s set-up, and that’s why there is a vested interest in signing Antoine Semenyo this January.

Why Liverpool want Antoine Semenyo

Liverpool are just one team in a pool of suitors for Semenyo’s signature this winter. However, FSG and sporting director Richard Hughes believe they have the lead in the race, with the Bournemouth forward leaning toward a move to Anfield.

Semenyo’s £65m release clause becomes active in January. He has scored six goals and supplied three more in the Premier League this season, with teammate Justin Kluivert marvelling at his “world-class” partner’s consistency and influence.

Liverpool could do a lot worse. Slot knows first hand the impact the 25-year-old can have in the Premier League, such explosiveness and dynamism when surging forward, on the right flank or the left.

Liverpool did not replace Luis Diaz when they sold him to Bayern Munich in August, and now they are looking to amend that. However, Semenyo isn’t the only talented winger on the market; there is another who has been earmarked and might actually be the better pick.

Liverpool could sign a Semenyo upgrade

Semenyo is the talk of the town in the Premier League, but he’s not the only good winger who FSG could add to Slot’s Liverpool squad.

Bradley Barcola, for example, might be an alternative who could actually prove an upgrade on the Ghana international, who has not yet tried his hand at the highest level.

The 23-year-old is establishing himself as one of the most exciting forwards in Europe, and Liverpool are aware of this, with Caught Offside reporting last week that FSG are chasing their long-standing interest in the Frenchman as they sound out alternatives to Semenyo.

Recent sources suggest that a figure in the ballpark of £100m could be needed to convince PSG to part with one of their most exciting prospects, a player who had a vocal contribution to last year’s quadruple-winning success.

Is Barcola the finished product? No he is not. But even so, this Les Bleus winger is establishing himself as a superstar in the making, actually described as “one of the best left-wingers in Europe” already by analyst Ben Mattinson.

Last season, he scored 21 goals and supplied 21 assists for Luis Enrique’s side. This year, Barcola has bagged five goals from 13 matches in Ligue 1, starting nine of those games.

Looking at the sum of his quality, it’s clear to see that Barcola has more athleticism and roundedness across the park, and his natural wellspring of creativity could be perfect for a striker like Isak, who has only scored one Premier League goal this season.

Isak is one of the best forwards in the world. Liverpool paid a lot of money for his goals. But this season, it’s been difficult for the Sweden international, who is struggling to adapt, struggling to restore his finest form and fitness levels.

Still, his movement and anticipation are second to none when he is on his A-game. A creator like Barcola beside him, naturally disposed toward wing play, could prove the formula to bring back his blistering form in the final third. He might be a better pick than Semenyo.

Of course, one of these wingers plays for Bournemouth on the English south coast, while the other stars for PSG, widely regarded as the most accomplished and devastating outfit last season; perhaps that is still the case.

But Barcola’s talent is evident. This is a star worth getting behind, and he would be worth the extra pennies, should FSG decide to move for him over Semenyo.
