West Ham dealt Worrall blow

The Athletic have dropped a worrying update on West Ham target Joe Worrall…

What’s the talk?

The Athletic’s Paul Taylor has dropped a concerning update for West Ham in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest centre-back Joe Worrall. The Hammers are reportedly keen on signing the English defender this summer, but he does not appear to be in any rush to leave the Championship outfit.

In a Q&A this week, Taylor revealed that Worrall is not demanding to leave Forest and the club will only cash in on him if the right offer comes in for his services. The Athletic reported earlier this summer that it would take a fee of £10m, paid largely upfront, to prize him away.

He said:

“A few weeks ago, the answer to this would have been a definite yes. Now it does not feel 100 per cent certain. You still get the sense that, if the right offer comes along, Forest will give serious thought to selling — but it would have to be the right offer.

They have already turned down offers for Brennan Johnson, although they were at a low level and the suggestion is that Joe Worrall is not kicking down doors demanding to be given the opportunity to move.”

Moyes will be gutted

David Moyes will be gutted by this latest update as it could negatively impact West Ham’s chances of being able to land Worrall this summer. If the Englishman is not willing to push for a transfer away from the City Ground then the Hammers will not be able to negotiate a better deal with Forest as they will be unable to use the threat of them keeping an unhappy player. This news seemingly shows Forest that they can keep Worrall at the club without him kicking up a fuss, which could allow them to be tough in negotiations.

The Hammers have an ageing group of central defenders at the club. Issa Diop is Moyes’ only option in that area of the pitch who is below the age of 29, with Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson in their 30’s and Fabian Balbuena turning 30 next month. Therefore, signing a talented young centre-back, like Worrall, could be a shrewd piece of business by the club.

He only turned 24 back in January and could add some much-needed youth to the ranks. However, despite his young age, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard once hailed Worrall as a “leader” during his time on loan in Scotland and claimed that he will captain any team he plays for in the future.

He said:

“He will be a captain of whatever team he plays for.”

“He is a leader and he stepped up today.”

This goes some way to showing that Worrall has the mentality and quality to come into the London Stadium and be a good addition to Moyes’ squad and that is why the Scot will be disappointed by this update.

Hopefully, the situation changes between now and the end of the window and the club are able to snap him up for a reasonable price.

AND in other news, Moyes must act swiftly to land “explosive” goal machine, West Ham fans would love him…

Goodwin's mammoth knock ensures a draw

PERTH, Dec 11 AAP – Mighty Murray Goodwin’s marathon knock of 176 for Western Australia stymied Tasmania’s bid for its first outright win of the summer at the WACA Ground today

Tom Wald11-Dec-2002PERTH, Dec 11 AAP – Mighty Murray Goodwin’s marathon knock of 176 for Western Australia stymied Tasmania’s bid for its first outright win of the summer at the WACA Ground today. The former Zimbabwean Test batsman’s 442-minute innings ensured the Pura Cup match ended in a draw on the fourth day.Goodwin guided the Warriors to an eventual second innings total of 405 after they trailed the visitors by 127 runs on first innings.Stumps were drawn early after the dismissal of Michael Clark (26) with Paul Wilson unbeaten on ten.Right-hander Goodwin celebrated his 30th birthday with a composed display the inexperienced home team badly needed with seven players on Australian or Australia A duty. His place in the WA lineup had been questioned this summer after a below-par 2001/02 season but he demonstrated today that he was still a class act.He hit 28 fours in his 344-ball effort and brought up his third hundred in 30 four-day interstate matches for WA with a well-timed straight drive for four off Scott Kremerskothen’s bowling.Goodwin scratched around yesterday but, having survived, he flourished today with his highest score for WA and showed why he averaged just under 43 from 19 Tests for the African nation.Young Tasmanian left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty had the pick of the figures with 4-92 off 30.4 overs. But the result further reduced second-last Western Australia (6) and cellar dweller Tasmania’s (2) already slim hopes of making March’s Pura Cup final. After beginning the day at 4-135, the Warriors started slowly and were in early trouble at 5-175.Debutant Adam Voges (32) failed to further his ambitions at first-class level and Kade Harvey (17) was run out in a mix-up with Goodwin.Harvey attempted to take a second run off a misfield but left himself stranded at the same end as Goodwin.Just after lunch rookie wicketkeeper-batsman Luke Ronchi (33) became fast bowler Damien Wright’s (2-44) second scalp with WA leading by 100 runs. However another debutant Beau Casson entered and put his head down taking 46 minutes to record his first run.He and Goodwin put on a 123-run seventh wicket stand in two and a half hours to kill off the visitors’ hopes of adding another four points to the two collected in the first dig.

Spurs exit update emerges involving Carter-Vickers

Writing on Twitter, American reporter Larry Henry Jr has dropped an exit update involving Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

The Lowdown: Carter-Vickers on the move?

The USA international has been touted as one of the names to leave this summer as Tottenham aim to adopt a sell-to-buy policy (football.london).

So far, Spurs have only been able to offload Juan Foyth after Villarreal triggered his loan-to-buy option.

Tottenham could want to sell Carter-Vickers this summer with his deal running out in 2022.

The Latest: Reporter drops Carter-Vickers update…

He claims that Celtic have been in talks with Tottenham over a possible transfer this summer while Newcastle United and Bournemouth are also ‘back in the mix’.

“It sounds like the Cameron Carter-Vickers race is down to three teams, per a source close to the player.

“Newcastle United, Celtic, and Bournemouth back in the mix. Should be a fun few weeks.

“Newcastle is still in mix, but going over finances. Celtic has been in talks with Tottenham over a transfer too. Bournemouth’s interest quieted but has since picked back up.”

The Verdict: Good news?

This could come as a financial boost for Tottenham if they do in fact aim to offload Carter-Vickers this summer.

The interest in him appears to be heating up from a number of interested parties but what remains to be seen is how much Daniel Levy will want for his services.

Still young, Carter-Vickers also enjoyed a successful stint on loan at Bournemouth over 2020/2021 – where he managed the second most clearances per 90 (3.6) out of the Cherries squad (WhoScored).

We believe Levy and co could command a reasonable fee for his sale this summer, and the income generated by his potential sale could be re-invested in the Spurs first-team squad.

Litmus test for Mumbai

If Mumbai win against Rajasthan Royals and follow it up with another victory in their final league game against Bangalore Royal Challengers on Wednesday, they will make the semi-finals

The Big PictureThe Mumbai Indians are in a must-win situation after two successive losses. If they win against Rajasthan Royals and follow it up with another victory in their final league game against Bangalore Royal Challengers on Wednesday, they will make the semi-finals. If they lose one of their remaining two clashes then they will have to hope that Chennai Super Kings lose their final match against Deccan Chargers.Mumbai can blame no one but themselves for their precarious state. Their six-match winning streak – the longest in the IPL – is a distant memory already and they need to get the right combination which got them to winning ways after losses in their first four games. Sachin Tendulkar raised eyebrows when he opted for rookie spinners in last week’s losses against Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils ahead of the medium-pacer Rohan Raje and wicketkeeper Yogesh Takawale, who excelled in pressure situations earlier in the tournament. Tendulkar can’t afford any miscalculations against Rajasthan, proud occupants of the top spot in the points table.Shane Warne is still smarting from the humiliation suffered in Mumbai in the first week of May where his batsmen were tied down by a charged-up Mumbai bowling. That loss ended Rajasthan’s winning run at five games and now, with another chance to go for six successive triumphs, Mumbai again stand in their way.Tournament position Rajasthan Royals: P12, W10, L2, NRR +0.918

Mumbai Indians: LLWWWWatch out for …Shane Warne v Sachin Tendulkar: Last time round this dream bout didn’t happen as Tendulkar failed to recover from his groin injury. He is now back, and in good nick, and Warne, the best slow bowler in the IPL, will like to score over his old nemesis.Sanath Jaysuriya v Sohail Tanvir: Jayasuriya has been in vintage form, disdainfully clobbering new-ball bowlers while Tanvir has been both incisive and economical and hasn’t lost too many tussles with batsmen in the IPL. Big hits: Yusuf Pathan, Shane Watson, Jayasuriya and Abhishek Nayar will keep the cheerleaders busyTeam newsAfter the failed experiments with spin, Mumbai are likely to replace offspinner Siddharth Chitnis, who was not even given a bowl against Delhi in the previous game, with Raje who is a good fielder as well Takawale, who had made some handy scores as Jayasuriya’s partner in the absence of Tendulkar, might take over wicketkeeping duties from Pinal Shah. Dominic Thornely’s all-round skills could see him picked ahead of South African fast bowler Andre Nel.Mumbai Indians (probable): 1 Sachin Tendulkar (capt), 2 Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Robin Uthappa, 4 Dominic Thornley, 5 Dwayne Smith, 6 Shaun Pollock, 7 Abhishek Nayar, 8 Yogesh Takawale (wk), 9 Dhawal Kulkarni, 10 Rohan Raje, 11 Ashish Nehra.Rajasthan are the only team with double-digit victories and have the liberty to try out any combination. Graeme Smith is likely to sit out after pulling a hamstring in his previous game and Shane Watson could come back after a one-game break. Shah inspired by Bevan

Following his blistering 49 in England’s 114-run win over New Zealand on Sunday, Owais Shah is using Michael Bevan as his inspiration in a bid to cement the No.6 place once and for all.Bevan, who averaged 53.58 in 232 ODIs, is widely considered the game’s greatest finisher. Nerveless in a chase, always aware of turning singles into twos and adept at coaxing runs from the tail, he is often the benchmark to which other one-day batsmen aspire.Shah cracked 49 from just 25 balls, hitting three big sixes and four fours to boost England’s total to 307 for 5, simultaneously earning a rousing ovation from a packed Chester-le-Street. It was the type of quickfire innings in the closing overs which England’s one-day team has yearned for and Shah, who averages 25.71 after six innings, is determined to make the No.6 spot his own.”That is just batting at No. 6 in a one-day game,” Shah said. “You either go in with five overs to go and have to get as many as you can. Or you go in four down for not many and you have to try to do something with another 25-30 overs to go – you have to be able to play both those roles.”That is what Michael Bevan used to do and, I am not saying I am as good as Michael Bevan, but that is something I have to aim for.”On Sunday he came to the crease with six overs and one ball remaining in England’s innings, joining Kevin Pietersen who was unbeaten on 94. His explosive innings paid off, though Shah admitted that he is more used to batting at No. 3 for Middlesex, not judging a match situation at No. 6.”I don’t really enjoy it, it is just something I have to do,” he said. “A No. 6 has to be able to play those two roles. That is my opportunity, that is what I have got to do and that is what I have got to deliver.”I would like to think I delivered yesterday. Sometimes it backfires, you try a shot and get out for one, caught at deep mid on because you have to get on with it. You have to teach yourself patience, you definitely do. There is more to it than having a big old hack. It might look like that is what I have done but you have to get the formula right, so you don’t go too early but you don’t go too late either.”The second one-dayer against New Zealand takes place on Wednesday at Edgbaston.

Leeds United: Paddy Kenny drops Kalvin Phillips verdict

Leeds United pundit Paddy Kenny believes that Leeds United would be taking a “massive risk” in starting Kalvin Phillips in the opening weeks of the Premier League season, due to his involvement in UEFA EURO 2020 [Football Insider].

The Lowdown: Leeds United prepare for 2021/22

Though acquiring high-profile talent in the transfer market will certainly be on Marcelo Bielsa’s mind this summer, maintaining the condition of existing key players will also be of paramount importance to the 65-year-old.

One man who will need to be routinely evaluated is 25-year-old Phillips, due to how indispensable he has become at Elland Road – the Whites lost seven of the nine league matches he missed last season.

The Latest: Kenny urges caution after Phillips’ “ridiculous” effort

In an interview with Football Insider, 43 year-old Kenny revealed his concern over the lack of recovery time Phillips may have between international duty and the start of the campaign, claiming his running at the tournament was ‘ridiculous’:

“He needs a rest. Have you seen some of his running stats for the tournament? They are ridiculous.

“He’s an unbelievably fit player. But I think after losing the final, mentally, he’ll need a break.

“It’s a massive risk for any player that’s been involved in the Euros to come straight back in. You’re risking injury, either later on or at the start of the season.

“You’ve got to look at the bigger picture, you can rest him and have him for the rest of the season or rush him for the start of the season and he gets an injury that rules him out for ages.” [Football Insider]

The Verdict: Phillips needs rest

Correctly, the 43-year-old points out the imperative need for the England midfielder to get some time off to recuperate after a busy summer of international football.

Dominating the middle of the park for the Three Lions in the tournament, Phillips made 32 ball recoveries in seven games for his native country [UEFA EURO 2020].

In 2020/21, he was ever present for Leeds United, registering four goal contributions from 31 appearances; one goal and three assists [Transfermarkt].

Never shy of a challenge, the Leeds-born Phillips successfully carried out 2.6 tackles per game in the Premier League across the season [WhoScored].

Looking ahead, the Whites should look to do whatever it takes to keep the Thorp Arch academy product free from injury, and if that means resting him for the first couple of matches then so be it.

In other news, a defender is close to sealing an Elland Road exit.

Wolves transfer update on Cajuste

Wolves are reportedly in talks to sign Jens Cajuste in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: One for the future

Cajuste is seen as the ‘future of Swedish football’ by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, who also described him as ‘excellent’ in an impressive performance for FC Midtjylland against Brondby in a match in the Danish Superliga back in April, and went on to claim that he is a ‘great talent’.

He was a key player for his side in the 2020/21 term, making no fewer than 39 appearances in total across all competitions, and has played in five senior games for Sweden, including at Euro 2020 (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Cajuste talks

According to SportExpressen, the Midlands club are currently in discussions with Cajuste’s representatives over his potential signing, along with Leeds United, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace.

They are also prepared to make a bid for the defensive midfield player, who is clearly in high-demand.

The Verdict: Wait on Neves future

Ruben Neves has reportedly been linked with a move to either Manchester United or Arsenal amid uncertainty over his future at Molineux.

If the Wanderers were to lose the Portugal international in the middle of the park, then Cajuste could prove to be an ideal replacement.

At just 21 years of age, the Swede clearly has a lot of potential, and his six-foot-one frame makes him ideally suited to the Premier League.

However, the signing may prove to be unnecessary if Neves ends up staying at WWFC.

Solanki prospers as Glamorgan toil

John Ward reports on the first day of the Championship match between Worcestershire and Glamorgan at New Road

John Ward at Worcester17-Jul-2008Worcestershire 307 for 4 (Mitchell 78, Solanki 69, Smith 58*, Moore 57) v Glamorgan
ScorecardIt was a bread-and-butter day in Division Two of the County Championship at New Road as the home side put themselves into a good position by means of steady batting against Glamorgan. Four batsmen scored fifties, with that by Vikram Solanki the most attractive, while Ben Smith lives to carry on the fight into the second day. The home crowd were duly appreciative of their team’s efforts, although they were disappointed that Graeme Hick was the only batsman to miss out.Glamorgan, winning the toss, put Worcestershire in under a cloudy sky that emitted occasional spells of light drizzle during the morning. They were perhaps a little unlucky, but their bowlers failed to vindicate this decision. Jason Gillespie, looking a little like Andy Caddick as his hair is now shorter and greyer, swung the ball early on and beat the bat several times, but his line was too wide of the off stump to put real pressure on the batsmen.Daryl Mitchell put the fourth ball of the match, from Gillespie, through the covers for a handsome four, but apart from this the home side made a slow start, with Stephen Moore struggling to get off the mark. But they gradually settled, and their opening partnership of 109 – they were unbeaten with 96 at lunch – was notable mainly for its steady accumulation, with more than half the runs coming from boundaries as they took good toll of the loose deliveries. The Glamorgan bowling was weak rather than bad, with honest triers doing their best but with little help from the pitch or encouragement from the batsmen.Moore, the more aggressive of the two once he had settled, reached his fifty before lunch off 83 balls, but was the first to go, pulling a ball from Dean Harrison to be caught near the midwicket boundary for 57. Mitchell soon afterward reached his own fifty (114 balls), and looked likely to complete a sound if unspectacular century when he uncharacteristically fished at a ball from Alex Wharf outside the off stump and edged a catch to Mark Wallace, the keeper.Solanki was the most aggressive batsman on view, taking only 70 balls for his 50, and soon after that hitting a big straight six off Jamie Dalrymple into the upper stand over the sightscreen. He eventually made 69 off 94 before presenting left-arm spinner Dean Cosker with a soft dismissal, charging down the pitch to be stumped. Hick (5) did not last long, caught low at first slip off James Harris, and Worcestershire were 252 for 4.Steve Davies settled in confidently in partnership with Ben Smith, who became the fourth batsman to reach 50, off 104 balls. There was no more encouragement for Glamorgan during the evening, which finished with the home county well on top through sound and unspectacular methods.Worcestershire gave an outing to seam bowler Imran Arif, who is a curiosity. He has played for the second elevens of Sussex and Hampshire as well as Worcestershire, and also for the Yorkshire Academy. However, he still has a Pakistani passport and is therefore officially registered as an overseas player. This is his first-class debut.

The South Africans began their preparations for the one-day leg of their tour with a 23-run victory against a PCA Masters XI at Wormsley. Albie Morkel was the stand-out performer, striking 35 off 21 balls before taking 3 for 29 as the Masters came up short despite Stephen Moore’s half-century.The Masters XI was made up of former first-class players, the likes of Nick Knight and Dougie Brown, and those not involved in the current round of domestic matches, while there was also an appearance from Nathan Astle. The South Africans rested a number of key players after the Tests including captain Graeme Smith.Herschelle Gibbs fell for 18 off 12 balls, but rapid contributions from Hashim Amla and Justin Ontong meant the run rate was over eight at the 10-over mark.Ontong hit six boundaries in his 37-ball 46 and then the middle order took over. JP Duminy hit hard in his 20-ball 30, while Morkel showed the same qualities he brought to Durham’s Twenty20 campaign by clubbing three fours and two sixes. The Masters struggled early on, losing both openers with 22 on the board, but Moore and Astle carried them to a promising 97 for 2 in the 12th over. Morkel made the breakthrough, having Astle caught behind, and also bowled Moore for an entertaining 56. Between those wickets Johan Botha removed Ali Brown as the challenge faded away.Morkel has spent the last few weeks watching his brother, Morne, help South Africa to a historic Test series victory and now wants to play his part in one-day success.”We’ve been playing some good one-day cricket, we were number one in the world earlier this year and we’re a proud nation,” he said. “For us to come over here and win a Test series and a one-day series in England would be a big achievement and we’re all really keen to do that.”

Celtic: Fans fume at Marian Shved exit

Celtic confirmed on Friday evening that winger Marian Shved has sealed a permanent Parkhead exit.

And, as to be expected, a number of Hoops supporters have been reacting to the news on the Ukraine international on social media.

The 24-year-old, who joined Celtic in 2019 in a deal worth £1.8m has signed for Belgian club KV Mechelen.

The right-winger spent last season on loan at Mechelen, scoring five times and registering three assists in 24 appearances.

Shved leaves the Hoops with just three appearances in green and white to his name and was never really given a chance to shine in Glasgow.

His only goal for Celtic came on his debut against Nomme Kalju in a Champions League qualifier and he’s now signed a three-year deal with Mechelen.

Celtic fans react

Celtic quoted Mechelen’s post and confirmed Shved’s exit on Twitter. These Hoops fans were quick to share their disappointment, with one feeling the move was ‘genuinely. Confusing’.
