Southern Electric Premier League Division One – Week 1 Report

Burridge, who avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth by winning their final match at Cove last season, have given their Southern Electric ECB Premier League prospects a massive boost by trouncing Andover by nine wickets at London Road

Mike Vimpany07-May-2001Burridge, who avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth by winning their final match at Cove last season, have given their Southern Electric ECB Premier League prospects a massive boost by trouncing Andover by nine wickets at London Road.Durban-based Dave Jackson, who played for Hursley Park last summer, hit an undefeated 91 and Neil Cunningham 59 not out as Burridge cruised past Andover’s 181-6 with seven overs to spare."It was a tremendous performance. We looked a completely different side compared with last year," enthused skipper Paul Ancell."The standard of our fielding was high – as was Andover’s – and we really took things from there."Andover’s total was largely based around assistant Hampshire Rose Bowl groundsman Mark Miller, whose 81 included a six and ten fours.Miller shared a 54-run opening partnership with Iain Brunnschweiler (21) and his elder brother Roger (33) as Andover moved cautiously to 148-2.Aided by some effective bowling from Ancell and Matt Compton, Paul Jenkins (4-43), returning for a second spell, really gave Burridge the incentive."Paul came in off his short run and his four wicket spell really stopped Andover getting away from us," Ancell added.Jerry Hayward slapped a brisk 24 not out, including one massive six over extra-cover off Hampshire’s James Hamblin as Andover, who finished fourth last year, closed at 181-6.When seamer Dean Woodhouse had opener Paul Hawkins caught behind without scoring immediately after tea, Burridge must have felt last season’s problems were about to start all over again. But there was to be no repeat – Jackson and Cunningham saw to that.Jackson, who made several appearances for Hampshire 2nd XI last summer, looked in good nick after wintering in Natal. He really carried the Burridge innings, scoring 11 boundary shots in his 91 not out, while Cunningham, whilst not in the best touch, kept him company during an unbroken match-winning stand of 180.Another century partnership, featuring opening pair Damian Shirazi and Richard Kenway, set up an eventual 22-run victory for BAT Sports over Bashley (Rydal) at Southern Gardens. The pair put on 128 for the first wicket to put BAT in a strong position – Kenway (62) being the more dominant partner. But 18-year old Shirazi paced his innings well before becoming a third victim of Matt King (3-41), with BAT 161-3.Neil Taylor (2-22) bowled a tidy ten-over spell of off-spin before Dave Banks (31) sent BAT’s total just beyond the 200-mark.Without Luke Ronchi, who has joined the Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide, Bashley lacked the real firepower to overhaul the BAT target.Much hinged on Hampshire left-hander Andrew Sexton, but when the county man was bowled by Richard Taylor for 13, Bashley’s prospects dipped.Neil Thurgood (46) took Bashley to 104-3, but until Andy Neal (38 not out) arrived at the crease, none of the middle-order stayed to make a worthwhile contribution.Neal and King lifted Bashley from a disappointing 121-7 to a hopeful 168, but Dan Goldstraw (3-19) had the final say, taking the last two wickets as the visitors reply petered out at 182.Defending champions Havant thrashed depleted Hungerford by seven wickets after bowling the Berkshire club out for a disappointing 101.Only former Middlesex and Sussex opener Toby Radford, who is captaining Hungerford this season, made a reasonable fist of it with the bat.Radford made 27 while Richard Hindley (4-22) took out the Hungerford middle-order.Tailender Chris Ward hit 22, but Hungerford’s total was never likely to extend Havant, for whom opener Dominic Carson hit 40 not out in a very comfortable seven-wicket win.Bournemouth, who began last season with a strong of victories, over-powered newly promoted Liphook and Ripsley by seven wickets at Chapel Gate.Their new-look opening attack of Australian Peter Waite, from South Perth, and Devonian Paul Warren struck with devasting effect at the start, removing both Liphook openers before a run was scored. Both Steve Riley and teenager Chris Wright were clean bowled – as were four subsequent batsmen as Liphook, last season’s Premier Division 2 champions, were stretched to make any impact."Everyone was up for it and, as a consequence, we bowled and fielded superbly," said Bournemouth skipper Matt Swarbrick.Graham Tyler (29) rallied, but with Liverpudlian Joe Wilson taking 3-18 from a mean ten-over sting and former Poole youngster Kristan Wilson (no relation) returning 2-15on his debut, Liphook found themselves in a terrible tangle at 63-6.Supported by Andy Brown (18), Duncan Berry struck a valiant 34 not out to lift Liphook to 136-8 – but it was never likely to be enough.Bournemouth lost an early wicket to Tim Wheatley, but it was a long while before Liphook tasted further success.Skipper Swarbrick led from the front, hitting an unbeaten 68 as Bournemouth, with support from Julian Cassell (26), reached 137-3 to canter home by seven wickets.

Man City fans love Kayky goal footage

Lots of Manchester City fans are delighted with a video of Brazilian youngster Kayky, who is set to move to the Citizens next year.

City have a history of signing Brazilians. Ederson, Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho have all played important roles in the club’s successes down the years, while many fans will also remember the contributions of the likes of Elano, Geovanni and, to a lesser extent, Robinho and Maicon.

Kayky will soon be adding his name to this list, and it seems that Pep Guardiola and co will be getting their hands on a top talent.

On Sunday evening, @City_Xtra shared a video of the 17-year-old scoring for current club Fluminense against Portuguesa RJ, and it was an impressive strike. He picked up the ball just inside the opposition half before showing off his pace to beat a defender and slot through the legs of the goalkeeper for his third professional goal (Transfermarkt).

These City fans were delighted with what they saw, and they took to the social media platform to share their thoughts. One excited supporter has even made comparisons with Kayky’s prolific compatriot Neymar, whose PSG side lost to City in the Champions League last week.

Saints fans gutted at Bertrand news

Southampton fans are gutted after it was confirmed Ryan Bertrand will leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The £9m-valued former Chelsea man (Transfermarkt) made the move to St. Mary’s Stadium from Stamford Bridge permanently in 2015 after a six-month loan spell and has gone on to be fantastic servant for the Saints since then. All in all, he has made 240 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing 20 assists (Transfermarkt).

However, his performances have frustrated supporters in more recent times, and with his contract set to run out at the end of this term, he reportedly turned down a new deal at Southampton (Hampshire Live). As such, the club have confirmed that he will be leaving at the end of the campaign.

‘Phillips must start last three games’

Danny Mills has told Marcelo Bielsa that Kalvin Phillips ‘needs’ to start Leeds United’s final three matches of the season to secure a place in the England squad for Euro 2020.

Mills, who played for Leeds for 1999 and 2004, was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Phillips, who earns £4,500 per week at Elland Road according to Spotrac, has made 26 Premier League appearances this season, missing a total of nine matches through injury or suspension.

He was a stoppage-time substitute last time out against Spurs, returning from the knee injury he sustained in the goalless draw against Manchester United last month.

Robin Koch has deputised at the base of the Whites’ midfield, and many supporters were delighted with his performance against Tottenham.

Phillips is now pushing a recall as Leeds travel to Burnley on Saturday lunchtime. The 25-year-old knows that a place in the England squad for next month’s European Championships is up for grabs.

Gareth Southgate selected him for the September, October and March squads, and he only missed out in November because he was injured (Transfermarkt).

The latest

Mills has said that Phillips must be given the opportunity at Leeds to address any fitness concerns and d he warned that substitute appearances are largely ‘irrelevant’.

Asked if he expected the 25-year-old to be recalled by Bielsa, he told Football Insider: “I hope so.

“I obviously want Kalvin Phillips to go to the Euros. He needs these next three games to say to Gareth Southgate ‘look, I’m fit, I’m over this injury.

“Coming on is sort of irrelevant. It doesn’t say you’re fit or not. If he plays these next three games it shows he’s fit and ready to go to the Euros.

“Declan Rice is out and we’re still not sure of Jordan Henderson. He has a real opportunity, if he can prove his fitness, then he can make this Euros squad.”

The verdict

It’s clear that Southgate values Phillips given his consistency of selection in recent months. Even if he were to start only the final game of the season, that would probably be enough justification for the England manager.

Another important point to consider, of course, is the danger of demanding 90 minutes too quickly after an injury. Koch’s excellent display last weekend gives Bielsa a dilemma for the Burnley game, although he could perhaps move back into the centre of defence to facilitate a recall for Phillips.

In other news, Leeds have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of this youngster.

Weakened champions may slip at strong B.A.T.Sports in week 7

Title holders Havant fear their unbeaten Southern Electric ECB Premier League record could go when they send a weakened team to face third-placed BAT Sports at Southern Gardens tomorrow, 11.30am

Mike Vimpany14-Jun-2001Title holders Havant fear their unbeaten Southern Electric ECB Premier League record could go when they send a weakened team to face third-placed BAT Sports at Southern Gardens tomorrow, 11.30am.The defending champions, who won all five 50-over games before being held to a draw by Calmore Sports last week, travel to Totton minus four key players.In-form Andy Perry, who hit an unbeaten 160 in the Calmore statemate, is ruled out with back trouble, while leading wicket-taker Phil Loat is out of the country playing golf. Also missing are Luke Sears and medium-pace bowler Mark Copping. “It’s a worry,” confesses skipper Paul Gover, who plans to move himself up the batting order.”These are four main players and to have them all missing at once is a recipe for trouble.”Nonetheless, Havant call up four more than adequate replacements in Army all-rounder Steve Hole, Matthew Ward, Graham Benton and Gover’s younger brother Matt, whose fielding is sure to have an effect on the champions’ out-cricket.BAT, meanwhile, are quietly confident they can be the first team to lower Havant’s sails. They field an unchanged side, with Australian all-rounder Dave Carson showing glimpses of a return to form after back-to-back half-centuries in his past two knocks.South Wilts skipper Russell Rowe, who has already scored over 500 runs this season, aims to notch yet another century as the Salisbury club entertain Bournemouth at Lower Bemerton.Rowe completed a glorious hat-trick of hundreds with an undefeated 170 at Liphook & Ripsley.Newly-wed Jamie Glasson, his long-term opening partner, makes his first appearance of the season tomorrow, but Dorset’s Tim Lamb is out.Ironically, mid-table Bournemouth are experiencing a few run-scoring problems, but Tom Webley’s return should remedy things at the top of the batting order.Provided he comes through Hampshire’s current Second XI Championship match with Kent unscathed, Andy Sexton will return for Bashley (Rydal) against struggling Hungerford at Bashley Common Lane.Sexton missed last week’s seven-wicket over Andover with a damaged finger.Andover, who have sunk to the Premier League basement after a sequence of poor performances, are likely to be unchanged against Calmore Sports at Loperwood Park.Calmore, certain to be without Mark Boston, could have Allan Hurst back after a shoulder injury, but skipper Tommy Pegler is unlikely to finalise his side until this evening.Burridge, who entertain in-form Liphook & Ripsley at Botley Road, expect Hampshire’s James Hamblin to return, while John Francis is set to make his first SPL appearance of the season after a successful term at Loughborough University in which he hit 126 against Leicestershire and 88 off the Nottinghamshire attack.Dave Tiller, who broke his collar bone at Sparsholt last week, will mss Portsmouth’s next six Premier Division 2 matches, but fit-again Ben Nolan returns for the Cove match at St Helen’s, Southsea.Second placed Lymington are unchanged at Easton & Martyr Worthy, where Andy Birch is well again. A bout of `flu meant the influential Easton all-rounder missing his first game in over ten years last weekend.Rob Savage could be a key absentee as Sparsholt visit Old Tauntonians & Romsey, while a breakdown in Trojans’ internal communication system could mean West Indian all-rounder Tim Subnaik missing the game with basement boys Old Basing.Division 3 pace-makers Winchester KS should win easily at lowly Lymington II, but Havant II – depleted by first team calls – have their hands full against New Milton. Alton go to run-shy Leckford. One key tussle in the lower echelons is Flamingos home match with Bashley (Rydal) – neither club being in particularly good batting form.

Who will replace Nuno at Wolves?

In one swift tapping of the publish button on Twitter, Nuno Espirito Santo’s stay at Wolves is coming to an end.

The Portuguese manager has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs in the past but his untimely departure on Friday afternoon came as a shock.

Nuno has been the foundation holding everything together at Molineux for the last four years. He has guided them from being a mid-table Championship club to one which achieved a place in the Europa League quarter-finals last season.

The 47-year-old has built an impressive armoury of Portuguese talent and, together with Fosun, they have taken the club to a new level in the modern era. Therefore, to lose him after their final match of the current campaign will be a huge loss.

With the transfer window opening in just a matter of weeks, the Old Gold hierarchy will need to make sure they have a swift replacement installed.

One man they have targeted is former Benfica coach Bruno Lage. Another Portuguese manager, he was touted with a switch to Molineux last month, but a move now appears to be gathering pace.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano took to social media in the immediate aftermath of Nuno’s resignation with the following update: “Wolves have contacted former Benfica manager Bruno Lage as ‘main option’ to replace Nuno Espirito Santo who’s leaving the club. Talks ongoing.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-rumours-and-news-soumare-dias-dembele-marques-nuno-santo” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer rumours and news!”]

Lage took over the Lisbon giants in January 2019, losing just 13 of his 76 matches in charge while guiding them to the 2018/19 Primeira Liga title. In the process, he and his team were described as “spectacular” by the reputed World Soccer magazine.

It was under his stewardship that a number of Benfica’s young players came to prominence, with newly-crowned FWA Premier League Player of the Year Ruben Dias thriving under his management.

Another player he helped take to the next level was Joao Felix. The forward bagged 17 goals and produced ten assists in just 29 outings under Lage before moving to Atletico Madrid for a mind-boggling £113m – the fifth-highest transfer fee in world football.

The 44-year-old also developed Florentino Luis, who has been linked with Leeds United, and Ferro, a centre-back now plying his trade at Valencia.

In bringing through all of these players, he showed why he’d be perfect for the current crop at Molineux. Jeff Shi likes a manager who can develop young talent, an area where Nuno was particularly adept.

That being said, with Lage at the helm, Wolves could extract even more from those coming through the academy. Fabio Silva will be able to take great comfort from what the 44-year-old achieved with Felix, another of football’s global wonderkids.

Wolves’ record signing has only netted four times since moving to England but could see his game significantly improved under a new manager. The likes of Vitinha, Morgan Gibbs-White and Christian Marques could also look forward to regular first team minutes if Lage’s work at Benfica is anything to go by.

The Jorge Mendes client may not be well known to an English audience but neither was Nuno before he arrived in the Midlands.

Lage certainly worth a punt from Shi.

AND in other news, Wolves intend to buy “unpredictable” 23-goal Mendes client, he’s an upgrade on Podence…

Devendra Bundela puts up a gallant fight in Indore

Central Zone were 339 for eight at the close of play on the first day of their four-day Duleep Trophy encounter against North Zone at the Maharani Usharaje Trust Cricket Ground in Indore on Tuesday.

Staff Reporter03-Apr-2002Central Zone were 339 for eight at the close of play on the first day of their four-day Duleep Trophy encounter against North Zone at the Maharani Usharaje Trust Cricket Ground in Indore on Tuesday.Devendra Bundela was on the verge of a well-deserved hundred (98*) as he took Central Zone to relative safety by the close of play. At one stage, Central were 175 for five and facing a real danger of being shot out for a low score after having elected to bat first.Earlier, Central had got off to a chocking start, losing Gagan Khoda bowled by Vinay Sharma for a duck in the very first over. Sharma struck again in the following over as the timbers rattled again, this time the victim being Paresh Sutane (9). Yere Goud (2) struggled for 28 balls before being caught by Vikram Rathour off the bowling of off-spinner Sarandeep Singh.Central were reeling at 38 for three in the 14th over, but the new pair of Jyoti Yadav and Jai Yadav then set about repairing the floundering innings. Jyoti Yadav, who opened the innings, went on to make 80 runs off 131 balls, striking a dozen fours and a six. The two batsmen added 111 valuable runs for the fourth wicket before Jyoti Yadav was caught by Yashpal Singh off Sarandeep Singh in the 40th over with Central on 149.Jai Yadav was the fifth batsman to be dismissed when, with the total at 175, he was caught by Shafiq Khan off Rahul Sanghvi. Yadav made 68 off 103 balls, relying more on the big strokes that produced 10 boundaries and two sixes. Then it was all Devendra Bundela defying the North Zone bowling to take Central Zone to safety. He got admirable support from Harvinder Singh (31), and the two batsmen added 86 crucial runs for the seventh wicket. Bundela faced 166 balls and struck 16 fours and a six in his brilliant unbeaten knock.Sarandeep Singh was the best of the North Zone attack, bowling a marathon spell to finish the day with the figures of 31-3-142-4.

Jonty Rhodes open to Australian offers

Jonty Rhodes is interested in furthering his career outside of South African cricket, revealing that he would regard South Australia as an ideal place to play the game.

Lawrie Colliver26-Apr-2002Jonty Rhodes is interested in furthering his career outside of South African cricket, revealing that he would regard South Australia as an ideal place to play the game.Rhodes, who is available for the Proteas in limited over internationals only, told Adelaide radio station 5AA that he would be keen to play under the Australian cricket structure.”I would be really interested in coming to Australia. I’ve got a lot of respect for the Australian cricket side and the set up of the game in Australia,” he said.Rhodes (who has previously received offers to play county cricket) has yet to be given the chance to play with a domestic team Down Under but the idea of playing at the Adelaide Oval is one that appeals to him.”I don’t hit the ball straight so the square boundaries are perfect for the sweep, the reverse sweep and the pull.”At 32, the veteran of 52 Tests and 227 one-day internationals says he has to look at what he will do when he finishes playing but would prefer it to be later rather than sooner.”I’ve got to the stage at the end of my international career that I’m getting a bit nervous (about) joining the real world so I’m trying to prolong it for as long as possible.”I’m not too sure of what else I am capable of achieving away from the cricket arena.”The only drawback for the Redbacks if they decided to pursue Rhodes would be his potential unavailability during the months of February and March, when the World Cup is being played on his home turf in South Africa.

Pep should unleash Aguero vs Chelsea

Manchester City take on Chelsea in the Champions League final this evening and Pep Guardiola should unleash Sergio Aguero against Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The Citizens travel to Portugal to take on their Premier League rivals and can secure an impressive treble with victory against the Stamford Bridge outfit, having already secured the Premier League and Carabao Cup this season.

Recent meetings between the two sides have seen Chelsea triumph, as they beat a much-changed City side 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final before winning 2-1 at the Etihad, with the Citizens winning 3-1 when the two sides met at Stamford Bridge back in January, although that was under Frank Lampard and the Blues are very much a different kettle of fish under Tuchel.

If Guardiola wants to get the better of his German opposite number on Saturday night, then he should perhaps consider starting Aguero, despite the Argentinian’s lack of game time in the Premier League this season.

The legendary forward started just seven games in the top-flight this season and Saturday will be his last ever appearance as a Manchester City player, as he prepares to join Barcelona following the expiry of his contract.

However, it is not only for sentimental reasons that the 32-year-old should start the final, as he also boasts a superb record against Chelsea in his City career.

In 22 games against the West London side, Aguero has scored an impressive 15 goals, which is joint-most with Newcastle United as the most he’s scored against any side in his career.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Granted, it should be 16, after he attempted a horrible panenka penalty in the 2-1 defeat against Chelsea the last time the two sides met, which was easily saved by Edouard Mendy, but this should be further motivation for Aguero to redeem himself in the final.

Back in 2014, the £22.5m-rated striker vowed that he would not leave Manchester City until they became European Champions, so it almost feels written in the stars that he will play a big part in the final to help Guardiola’s side to victory before departing the club as a legend.

Whilst he has struggled at times this season, he was struggling with injuries and was struck down by the current viral outbreak which certainly impacted his match fitness, but he emphasised his immense quality from the bench in the 5-0 win against Everton last weekend, so will be in confident form ahead of the final.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936″]

Therefore, Guardiola should definitely consider starting the “sublime” striker against Chelsea on Saturday night, as he could be the game-changer in a game where City cannot afford to miss the chances they will inevitably create.

And, in other news… Man City should swoop for “extraordinary” £41.4m-rated gem, Pep would love him
